PSD and versions

Hey guys,
I've been messing with Aperture 3 lately, and I'm really impressed by it.
I however have a few questions regarding the Photoshop CS5 integration.
I'm a real organization freak, and I hate having multiple versions of the same picture lying around in my library. I love the Master/Version system, where I just click on "master" to access the original raw. As long as I'm using Aperture tools to edit, this works fine.
The problem arises when I edit a picture in Photoshop.
Let's imagine I finished all my global adjustments on a picture, but want to touch it up real quick in PS. When I click on "External editor" a new master is created from my previous adjustments, and when I save it in PS, the changes become the version of the new master.
I end up with:
Master 1 = Original raw file / Version 1 = Aperture Adjustments
and
Master 2 = Aperture adjustments / Version 2 = Photoshop work.
My question is: Is there a way to bypass Master 2?
I would love to just have:
Master 1 = Original raw file / Version 1 = Final work (Aperture + Photoshop edit)
Maybe I'm missing something. Right now I'm using stacks to "attach" all the versions of editing work, but there has to be a better way.
Thanks!

Actually you really do have:
Master 1 = Original raw file / Version 1 = Final work (Aperture + Photoshop edit)
The reason being that there is no such thing as 2 different "Masters" because a Master is defined as the source RAW file prior to conversion and edits by a conversion program (Aperture, NX, PS, etc.). "(Aperture + Photoshop edit)" is actually a Version 2.
One cannot actually discuss a Master 2. This may sound like just symantecs, but it is what it is. In my head I see what you describe (and I do the same thing) as:
• Master = Original raw file
• Master ---> Aperture
• Master + AP conversion/edits = Version1
• Version1 ---> Photoshop
• Version1 + PS edits = Version2
So there really is no Master 2. There are two Versions and one Master.
The use of the word "Master" is unfortunately confusing, because technically one could easily argue that PS sees the PSD/TIFF coming out of Aperture as a second "Master" coming into PS. However IMO we should look at our whole workflow, which IMO is best visualized with only a single "Master."

  • Versioning psd and psb files

Is it possible to create a file visioning system (.psd and .psb) with adobe's solutions, out the file itself, to not increase the weight?
    Thanks

Keeping Adjustment Layers organized in Layer Groups representing the correction steps should be no problem.
Touch-up, transformations etc. of course can be problematic if the Layer Masks of higher (Adjustment) Layers are affected, but Smart Objects can be useful there.
Basically a stringent non-destructive work-flow offers advantages in my opinion, but there can be a trade-off: the individual files can get considerably larger and therefore saving-times increase considerably.

  • File- open displays only generic icons for psd and raw

Following a hard drive crash, I had to reinstall Photoshop CS5.  I've updated to the latest version (12.0.1) and updated my NVIDA GEForce 8600 driver to the latest from Dell. This is on a Dell XPS 410, 4 GB memory and hundreds of gigs of hard drive space. When I use the File-->Open menu and dialog to look for images to use, while JPG and most TIF icons are thumbnail icons, the CR2, CRW, PSD and DNG icons are all generic. There is no problem in Bridge or in LightRoom. Opening the image in Photoshop doesn't seem to help.
While I obviously have options, when I just need to go looking quickly for an image I know is there, this makes it difficult to find. What can I do to get those previews back?
    Thanks in Advance

Back up all data before continuing.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    mv Des*/.DS_Store .Trash/
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal.
Relaunch the Finder, then empty the Trash. Test.

  • Importing of PSDs and others

I have a large number of older (pre digital camera) image files organized in the finder. When navigating to these folders via Aperture/import many, many of the image files do not even show up. Of course, many of these files are layered PSDs and/or various versions (tiff, jpeg, etc) of an original scan. When in question, I have to compare the import window with the contents of any given folder in the finder. It is quite difficult to see which files are not shown in Aperture due to the large number of files in the folders.
The questions are these...why don't these files show up? How can I make them show up?
I know about the potential layered PSD problem. I've followed the guidelines regarding preferences in Photoshop.
All of the unseen image files I'm referring to are originally from scans of original film. So far, it appears that if the original was from a digital camera, the layered version does appear in the import window. With Aperture, the future looks bright but the past is gloomy.
Additionally, once I determine which images do not show, I'm unable to drag/drop that image into an Aperture project. Direct drag/drop is allowed of the images that do show in the import window. What is it about these images that is not supported? Many of them are not layered at all, but are just ordinary jpegs or psds.

Some of the files that would not show up in Aperture/import did not do so apparently because of age. I found that if I opened them in PS CS2 and 'saved as' they were then seen. I set up a PS action to open and resave (to a different disc) and they were fine (I lost my hierarchy of folders in doing so). Since these were 'masters', I had never saved new ones to the same location. Some of these had possibly never even been saved in OSX, only System 9. Many were likely saved on some older version of Photoshop, since I've had that since Version 5 or before it's hard to tell where the cutoff is.
Other files were not seen (apparently) due to odd naming conventions. Some files I had named 'nameofimage.mini' or .small or .whatever, that's a mistake. In days of yore, I didn't even know about file extensions.
While there are still hundreds of images scattered about my drives that may not be recognized, I was able to import a core group of important portfolio images by modifying them as described above.
I guess Aperture is a good reason to really clean house and purge an overwhelming amount of duplicate or outdated images. Ultimately, if Aperture prevails, I'll likely have to re-save hundreds of images in order for them to make it into the library.

  • How to find Mobile device OS name and version using Flex?

is there anyway to get device information like OS name and version using flex 4.5.1 or 4.6 SDK. i am developing a project in Flex which needs to identify the end user mobile platform like Android, iOS.. and its version like Android means 2.1,2.2,etc..
Anyone can help me on this?

I don't know that there is a proprietary driver. In fact, I'm sure there isn't because I never installed one. I figured there was some code file somewhere that dealt with keyboards. Yes, I have dealt with the developer, they say to tell Apple there is a problem. I have been putting it off and waiting to update since 10.6.3, so the problem is getting a little old. Do I even know there is a problem? I'm not sure what this means. I do know that when I update my operating system past 10.6.2 my keyboard no longer works, and I have to use a stock Apple keyboard to run a time machine reinstall. Why else would I be going through this?

  • PSD (and AI) thumbails in Windows 7 64 bit?

Does anyone have a fix for the missing Photoshop (and Illustrator) thumbnails (CS3) in Windows 7 64 bit Explorer?
Something easy to implement that doesn't involve purchasing and running an additional 3rd party commercial solution?
Please don't answer "Bridge". I should not be forced to use an extra resource hogging application to simply view my files in my normal workflow.
I used to use the psicon.dll and aiicon.dll workaround in XP without any problems whatsoever. I know there are people here that claim these caused information loss and other nonsense like that but they worked perfectly fine. However, I had to recently upgrade my OS and unfortunately this workaround doesn't function properly in Win 7 64 bit because of the different directory structure.
I'm sure these could be made to work by rejigging the registry edit files to point to Programs (x86) but I'm not that confident in my abilities there. I've searched high and low to see if anyone else has done this yet but haven't come up with anything promising.
I was also wondering if CS5 corrected this problem? Can anyone tell me if they are able to see their PSD and AI thumbs in Win 7 64 bit Exploer with CS5?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

FYI, .psd thumbnails do not show in Windows 7 x64 Explorer with Photoshop CS5 either.  Edit: Oops, I see that was already answered.
There's a psicon.dll file in the 32 bit Program Files (x86) subfolder, but none in the corresponding 64 bit area.
Anyone got a direct link to that discussion between Adobe and Microsoft?

  • Auto Save and Versions

Where can I control Auto Save and Versions? I can't find it in System Settings.
Can I control it by terminal commands?
    On http://www.apple.com/macosx/what-is/ Apple claims:
Versions creates a new version of a document each time you open it and every hour while you’re working.
    While here http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html Apple claims:
Forget about manual saving and forge ahead with confidence. Auto Save in OS X Lion automatically saves your work, while you work, during pauses and every five minutes. And Lion saves changes in the background so you're never interrupted with progress bars.
So I wonder every five minutes or every hour? Would be nice to make sure on each Mac itself whether it auto-saves every five minutes or every hour and to actually allow its user o set the frequency.

It does both. It saves your work in the current version every 5 minutes. Every hour, it creates a new version of the document.
I haven't searched for any version settings, yet.

  • Value Type and Version

    Hi,
In most FI extractors, I see Value type (mapped to 0vtype) and version (mapped to 0version). Can anyone please explain the difference between them? Can you please share examples?
    Thanks
    Jason

    Hi,
    <b>Version:</b>
Indicates which planning version has been used for the  data that has been posted to the Business Warehouse system.
The default value is 0, that is, the most current version
    <b>Value Type:</b>
Indicates which type of values should be posted to the Business Warehouse system. You can choose between:
    Actual figures
    Plan figures
    Target figures
    Hope this is clear.

I've heard that loading version 8.5 and version 11.5 on the same pc can be done, but the loading needs to be done in a particular order.  Does anyone have experience with this?

Assuming you are talking about Crystal Reports and not the Enterprise product, then yes, they can co-exist, and without any "tweeking".  You should install Crystal 8.5 first, and then 11.5.  Naturally, at that point, the default program for any .RPT file will be the 11.5 product, so, if you need to maintain the 8.5 reports but not upgrade them, you will have to open those files within Crystal 8.5 instead of double-clicking on them from Windows Explorer.

  • Missing Software and version #

Okay, how would you all handle this:
In ZEN 7, we had JUST MSI And add/remove programs setup for software inventory. It actually did pretty good (example, it found a bunch of ESRI ArcGIS stuff).
It would show ALL the SDK (ie, there's an SDK for C++, one for VB, etc.)
It would also show the complete version and build number (ie: 9.2.134.21)
Now we are using ZAM 7.5 (in addition to ZEN, but eventually will cutover to ZCM)
Anyway, ZAM 7.5 seems even more limited in its software inventory.
It doesn't find any of the SDK's (I've had to submit multiple fingerprint wizards in the past for missing software).
It also doesn't report build numbers, just versions like 9.2
Sooo, what's the best way to handle this?
The missing stuff I'm either going to have to add more fingerprints (very time consuming as I have to go visit the PC's with the software to run the utility) or add local product (in which case I've gotta get the people to send me the .exe and whatnot). Either way, stinks, IMO.
And how should I handle the missing version information? It's in the windows registry at the least, but I'm not sure about the actual VBR info in the file. Do I submit an SR, enhancement request, run the wizard?
Version info is very important for us because it signifies the product patch levels (ie, it doesn't say like: Hi I'm ArcView 9.2 SP3, but rather, I'm 9.2.somethingsomethingsomethng)

Recognition in ZAM - and ZCM - has been, over time, focused more towards business applications than development applications. In that environment, recognition out to the build number is viewed as less relevant; accordingly, most fingerprints tend to report at the "N.N" or "N.N.N" level. The recognition technology is quite capable of reporting out to "N.N.N.N" and indeed that level of granularity is utilized when requested and appropriate. (We pickup the build from the VRB.) Further, when specified, "promotion" fingerprints will automatically discover versions with new build numbers in them and create new products on-the-fly. This type of fingerprint must, however, be engineered by Novell.
Generally, the recognition team has placed less emphasis on SDKs. We tend to make decisions towards products that will have impact on the majority of customers. But, as you've mentioned, we respond to requests for signatures.
From the software local products perspective, if you are gathering "software file" (the ZAM name) or "file scan" (ZCM) data, you shouldn't need to have files sent to you to create a local product. In ZAM 7.5 you can create a local product from the Software Files report in the web console fairly efficiently. It works even better in the ZENworks Control Center of ZCM 10. On a project earlier this year, at a customer site where there is a lot of internal application development and a strong commitment to populating the VRB on every update, we created over 150 local products - with different product names and versions - in about a minute.
