PSE 8.0 question

Hey i just got got photoshop element 8.0 and have a question. I have used some photoshop programs in the past and they let me do color correction on my own.  But i can only find auto color correction and it is really pissing me off because it dosent give me anything good. So can some one please tell me how i can do my own color corrections? (and i dont mean like hue and saturation and stuff. i mean adjust my magentas, cyans, greens, and so on.)

Open an image in full edit and click on Enhance on the top tool bar. That will give you options to adjust lighting and color with full control.

  • PSE 7 catalog questions

    I made an abortive attempt to upgrade from PSE 4 to PSE 7 in May. When I had difficulty converting my PSE 4 catalog and did not have time to deal with it, I de-installed PSE 7 and reverted to using PSE 4. Now, I am trying to update again and have 3 questions about the catalog.
    1. When I did the catalog conversion in May, many of my tags and tag categories were missing or rearranged. Is there something I need to do in converting my PSE 4 catalog to 7 to prevent this from happening?
    2. Now that I have re-installed 7, the old catalog I converted in May is still there. I need to delete this PSE 7 catalog in its entirety and reconvert my current PSE 4 catalog. When I try that, I get an error message that says "My Catalog already exists - use another catalog name". How do I get rid of the version 7 catalog from May?
    3. PSE 4 gave me the choice of showing my photos in either date sequence or in file name sequence within each folder. Does PSE 7  have the same ability to display in file name sequence? If so, I can't find it.
    I've got Barbara Brundage's book on the way and it may answer some of my simple questions but, in the meantime, if anyone can help with these I'd appreciate it.

    The conversion process is pretty buggy. Make sure you do File > Catalog > Recover in PSE 4 before attempting conversion.  If that doesn't work, see steps 2 and 4 of this FAQ:

    You can delete the old catalog by doing File > Catalog, selecting My Catalog, and clicking Remove.

  • PSE 4 Restore questions, please.

    I have a few questions on how the restore function works in PSE 4 (having never done it before):
    1) I have a full backup on an external drive that dates to June '09.  Looking in the backup folder, all pictures have Bxxx.jpg names. Plus there are MyCatalog.buc and backup.tly files. When I restore them, will the original folders and filenames be recreated?
    2) During the restore process, will I be able to tell the system which drive/folder to restore them to?
    3) If I have since created a new mycatalog.psa in PSE and added recent photos, when I restore my backup, will it append the restored photo's to that catalog, or completely overwrite it?
    4) It's hard to explain but I have lots of duplicates, unnamed, misfiled, etc. photo's that I would dearly love to properly organize (my catalog has about 11,200 photo's in it).  Should I do this outside of PSE4 and then re-import into a clean catalog (yes, and loose all my tags, etc.), or try to manage it all thru PSE?  The reason I hesitate about the latter is, I'd need to click on each picture in PSE4 to see if it is not named properly, then dig further into properties to see if it is misfiled....a daunting task with over 11,000 pictures.  Would appreciate your advice before I begin this project.
    5) Somewhat unrelated question - I started to re-org my pictures earlier (before my crash) and found many w/ wrong date/time (metadata) associated.  Up to this point, I did nothing outside the catalog (but have done a lot of moving, re-importing, etc., over the years). So, how is it that the date/time associated to a .jpg can change?  Literally by years? Can you advise on what scenarios might make this happen?

    What a coincidence. I came to these forums because the same thing is happening to me in PSE 7, and I actually was doing a search on the green box around the photo and the flashing date when I click on a file folder and that led me to this thread. I have my Photoshop organizer file structure set up to match my Windows file structure. I use Photoshop to download all of my photos to folders labeled with the date the photo was taken. Then I typically rename the folder using Photoshop, and the matching rename shows up in Windows. If I move any files or folders, I do it through Photoshop Organizer. I have read the online manual and I *think* that I'm following the instructions, but I admit that I don't find any of it to be particularly intuitive. Whatever I'm doing wrong must be cumulative.
    This has happened gradually, but now when I ask the Organizer to display the photos (I have everything checked to show in the 'View' menu), it displays only a fraction of them, and they are associated with the wrong folders. When I try to rename some of the folders, I get a message that says "The folder that you are trying to rename contains files that are not visible in the Organizer. Are you sure you want to rename this folder?" Yet, when I right click on the file in the Photoshop filetree and display the files in Explorer, then attempt to add them to the Organizer, Photoshop tells me that all of the files have already been imported. The only way I can see some of them in the Organizer is to search for them by filename, and I'm not talking about edited images, I mean the originals in the set. And I, too, have found photos (originals, not edits) that have had the date changed. Fortunately, I have under 1000 photos so I could erase the whole thing and re-import them and re-tag and caption everything, but I've spent hours and hours doing this already and don't want to have the same thing happen to me again.
    At this point, I'm ready to just go back to organizing, rating, tagging and captioning my photos in Windows and using PSE to just edit them and create the occasional online album to share with family.

  • Note on bugs in PSE 9 and question on fit to screen

    Things I don't like or glitches in 9 that I never had in Elements 5:
    Undo goes to last layer, NOT to last action. Really annoying when I'm trying to stay on the layer I'm on!!
    Icons on organizer are all orange. Every. Single One. Not at all helpful for tags & categories. I found the icon folders after, oh, about half an hour, but can't figure out how to get more icons. I can get orange, blue, red, and green. No purple nor any of the old ones from 5. I guess this is a question, if anyone knows how to make these icons useful rather than boring and uesless.
    Help search from the top tab is not for PSE 9, and the suggested answers all go to earlier editions!!! This is really bad.
    Last, I can't move the image in the window space. This is kind of basic, to use maximum real estate. In 5, when I enlarged the image with the navigator, the whole image, plus any grey margin, enlarged. It still enlarges, but the outline around it stays the same!! So all you see is 3 big inches, when you need 6 inches to see the image! Then you have to stop and manually drag the outline to match the size of the image. So time-consuming.
    Another size problem is that for some reason I can't deselect the Project Bin in the Windows tab. The check mark is always there. That means that there is always 1.5 inches or so in the bottom I could use, but Fit to Screen STOPS where the project Bin used to be. Again, I have to drag the whole outline down to work on the image.
    Enlarging the box outline to match the image is basic geometry that should have been figured out in Elements 1, not in 9.Since this happens before you even start work on the image, it ruins the experience from the start.
    Any suggestions on fixing the icons or deselecting the project bin or automatically sizing to fit screen gratefully appreciated.

    I was on the phone for 5 minutes short of 3 hours - about an hour was on hold. I decided to limit my complaints to 2: the orange tags that are the only color now for Organizer tags & categories (3 other colors, but can't add colors or shapes of icons) and the problem with fit to screen. They had me download an app so that they could see everything on my computer. I'd never done this before, and was a little nervous, but also desperate. For each time they moved I had to give permission, so you have some control.
    They know about the organizer tag problem. No solution yet. The more people complain, the better. They have issued some updates, so they can update this if they WANT to. One guy suggested that asking for more than 5 icons is a "request" but I insisted that it is a BUG! No one can organize their images into just 4 or 5 categories!
    I talked to 3 guys before any of them could fix the full image problem, so it pays to be persistent and keep asking. To answer you, Barbara, yes, you can make the Project Bin disappear totally if you're in Float mode (and also unattach it, or move it to Panel Bin - I was in Float mode, and didn't know it. In fact, even the words of the tab Project Bin will disappear.  In that mode, Fit to Screen will always stay ABOVE where the PB would be - about 1.5 inches from bottom.
    The guy who helped finally had me remove the entire folder inside Adobe, and it built a new one, without Preferences. (I don't know why he couldn't just check Default mode, but he didn't) I had checked Allow floating documents in Preferences. Why not? Well, the screen behaves differently, if the images are floating - they just won't use the full edit space unless you drag and push them all over.
    The default Normal mode will center the image fairly big. Then in Window uncheck PBin. The image will center itself again, but will not get any bigger, even with the extra space. Go up to View, Fit to Screen, and then it will fill the whole space!
    I really think there shouldn't be a Floating mode preference there at all - it was very problematic.

  • Have PSE already...Bought PSE 13.  Question.

    I have PSE 11..  I just bought PSE 13.  Do I need to uninstall the PSE 11 before installing PSE 13?  What about the organizer?  I have never used it, but do I need to back it up or anything before I load PSE13?

    There are several iPad apps that can read and write Excel files or Excel-compatible files. Numbers is one, and I use it on both my MBP and my iPad, though not heavily on either. I also use Excel on the Mac, and because I'm used to it, I prefer it to Numbers, which works a bit differently.
    I would be leery of buying an iPad to use as a substitute for a computer. Typing on it is very inefficient unless you use an external keyboard, and no Mac or Windows software runs on it -- only iOS software. You must use a computer to move files onto and off it, organizing them on it is difficult, and if you don't have a network printer you can't print from it. I dearly love my iPad 2, but it's an adjunct to my heavily-used MBP, not a substitute for one.

  • PSE 7 Organizer question

    From time to time when having both the Editor and Organizer open I notice a red circle with a slash through it in the upper left corner of the thumbnail in the Organizer. exactly what is the significance of this?

    It means that the Organizer knows you are editing the photo in some other application (usually the PSE Editor), and the Organizer won't let you do anything with that photo. The red circle goes away when you close the photo in the other application.

  • PSE Forums general question

    It's been a long time since I tried to access the Adobe PSE forums and it seems things have changed.  There used to be (I think) three different PSE forums: one for tips, another for technical issues and possibly a third.  I take it everything is now combined in this one forum?
    It also used to be possible to access these forums from usenet via a news reader.  Now, when I try to connect to the Adobe News server I get a 'server not responding' error.  Are these forums still accessible as newsgroups or is the server perhaps down temporarily?

    Hi, Beth. Yes, adobe made some major changes a while back. There is only one PSE forum now, since people were always confused about where to post, and the new software doesn't support news readers, only web and email.

  • PSE 5.0 question

    Have not used PSE much up to now (that's why I have 5.0).  How do I remove a glare on the lens of glasses with out changing anything else in the pic.  I need to edit just that spot.  BTW... I'm in full edit mode.  Thanks!  Will have to upgrade ASAP.

    First of all I made a copy of the Background layer and ran auto levels to correct the color and brightness.
    To remove the glare I cheated at bit...I selected the good eye, feathered the selection a few pixels, and copy/pasted the selection to a new layer. Then I flipped the layer horizontally and used the Move tool with arrow keys to position this good eye over over the bad. To remove some remaining glare just below the top of the glasses rim I added a blank layer and cloned some of his skin to the left and right of this glare. Note that you can do the clone directly on the picture layer; the reason for the blank layer is that if you mess up the cloning you can delete this layer and start again. If you do use the blank layer, make sure to check the Use All Layers box on the options bar.
    To remove the switchplate I did similar: selected a portion of the wallpaper to the left of the switchplate, feathered the selection, copy/pasted the selection to a new layer, and used the Move tool to align this over the switch, taking care to align the wallpaper pattern. Then I used the Eraser to remove the portion of this layer which covered Bill's face. Since the new portion of the wallpaper was slightly darker than the original I made a levels adjustment to this layer to lighten it to match the original as close as possible.

  • PSE 4 Layering Questions

    I am new to PSE and am having a hard time getting the layering right, I need some "laymans" terms and easy first steps to work with, any help is greatly appreciated. For example I wanted to change an image to B&W (no problem doing that) then colorize the flowers the girl is holding, but I just couldn't get it to work. I'm lost, please help!! Thanks so much,

    To add to what Charles said..
    If you paint too far and reveal excess color, simply switch to white and paint to "erase" the excess. That's the benefit of using an adjustment layer.
    You might also want to use a soft brush if you want a soft transition between the B&W and color portions.

  • PSE 8 install question for Mac PowerBook G4, "Does not support PowerPC architecture CPU..."

    I am getting the following message during attempted install of Photoshop Elements 8 for my Mac PowerBook G4 (OS 10.4.11):
    "This product does not support PowerPC architecture CPU. Please upgrade or adjust your system to meet these requirements."
    I double-checked system requirements listed online before purchasing software, and also checked requirements listed on outside of box before opening it. All looked fine,
    Searching Adobe help has turned up nada, any thoughts out there?

    Hi Laura,
    I guess you must have missed something or misinterpreted something. Please check the requirements mentioned on the web page: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelmac/systemreqs/
    which clearly says that it needs an  Intel® processor which means an iMac machine, Mac PPC are not supported in PSE 8 anymore.

  • New at PSE 8 with question

    I am having a very hard time seeing the size of all type and icons on all toolbars, etc, they look to about 4 or 6 pt. Is there a way to make them larger?? I don't think I can use this program if I can't see the items larger. TIA

    Thank you for the information. I will try the suggestions, but I am shocked that there is really no way to enlarge everything. Does Adobe think everyone has the same quality of eyesight? I feel I just wasted my money. I appreciate your reply to my question.

  • PSE 9 Backup question

    I can do a full and incremental backup to my external hard drive without any problems.  I cannot do a backup to my 64 gb flash drive.  I have tried reformatting the flash drive to exfat 32 and to NTFS with no success. 
    Any suggestions?  Thanks for your help!!

    Are you getting the same error when taking the backup on the local hardisk?
    if you didn't tried that please try taking the backup on the local harddrive, please make sure that there is enough space.

  • New Install of PSE and some Questions

      Install went well.  I did let the system "analyze" my images.  I just couldn't help comparing my esthetics to the machine's.  Over six hours on up to 14,000 images.
      Q1:  I lost ALL Adobe TV and Adobe.com audio.  And of course Adobe Media is dead.  What happened?  I cannot do much with those fancy tutorials without audio --- which comes through fine from various other sites.
      Q2: Is there any connection of the Analyzer/Smart Tags with the tags on the system?  I heavily tag all my images, especially people.  It seems that Analyzer does not take advantage of those tags.  Anyway to help it?  I'd love to round up a collection of single person photos of a single person and seed the face recognition system that way.  Super easy to do.  For me.  I notice it consistently identified bicycles as people.  Sort of cute.  Those wheels must make great eyes.
    Q3:  The README file in dark caps says that Windows Media Player is necessary for slide shows, audio/video files, to work.  Serious?

    #4 - make sure you are sharing out all the items in your itunes library (music, movies, etc)
    you should be able to do that under preferences
    you may also want to check if it is pointing to the correct library
    #1 - home sharing should work on the LAN w/out the need for signing in; the shared libraries should appear under "shared" in the left sidebar of itunes
    think this may resolve the issues you have on #2 as well
    #2 - itunes doesnt seem like it's built for that, but if you have any experience, i'd like to hear it.  this seems why home sharing is the usually the best route to go and just have one instance of itunes managing the library
    but as long as the NAS or any media drives are shared out, connecting to it should not be a problem.  it's the writing to the itunes library that's the issue.  i haven't used Match so can't help there.
    depending on your OS, you can either ctrl-click or option-click on the itunes icon,
    which will also give you the option of selecting a library location upon launching itunes
    you can navigate to the location of the library file and point it to that.
    technically, you could do that but i believe the actual library has to be stored locally
    as long as you still have all the media, then you can just rebuild the library
    but for locally shared items, as in, all inside the home, i would leave icloud out of the equation
    just use itunes sharing and it should be fine

  • Question regarding pse 8

    When I have multiple pictures up, how do I keep two pictures from merging when I move one of the pictures to the side?  I would like to turn this feature off.

    I opened 4 photos into Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 and have set the pictures to "float in all windows" so I can easily grab any one of them and move them to compare pictures.What happens is that the picture I am moving fades and suddenly I have two pictures, one on top of the other in one frame.  In the bar at the top of the "merged" picture, it shows the file names of two pictures.  From that top bar, I can undo the "merge" by grabbing one of the pictures and dragging it to the left or right, and I am back to the two original pictures.  I would like to be able to move pictures around without two frames becoming one frame with two pictures layered.  Hope that is a better explanation.
