Pse5.0 organizer

Can Photoshop Elements be cofigured so that the organizer does not open automatically. I have looked through the program files and see no mention of the oranizer.I haven't tried doing a custom re-install. I am running a Zip 250 drive and have recently installed the WinZip utility. This utility is causing problems and the organizer only exacerbates these. If I could create a way to keep the organizer from opening automatically that would help in getting to the problems unique to the WinZip utility.
Bill

two thoughts
-- if PSSE 5 is opening to the Organizer when you click on its desktop icon to start the program -
then in the Organizer go to the "Window" pulldown menu and choose "Welcome"
-- if PSE 5 and the Organizer are starting automatically when you connect a camera, camera card reader, or USB flash drive, then in the Organizer go to the Edit menu, choose Preferences , then choosw Camera or Card Reader and uncheck the box for "Auto Launch Adobe Photo Downloader ...."
(Note - if still not solved when connecting a device post back because there is an alternate but more complex approach that is sometimes but not usually necessary)

  • How to uninstall PSE7 and revert back to PSE5 organizer prior to PSE8 install

I have a Vista 64-bit system and currently have PSE5 abd PSE7 installed.  When I installed PSE7, I converted the PSE5 Organizer catalogs, but decided I didn't care for some aspects of PSE7 and reverted back to using PSE5.  So, the PSE5 catalogs are current and the PSE7 catalogs aren't up to date.  I now want to install PSE8 but want to be sure that it "grabs" and converts the Organizer catalogs from PSE5, not the out-of-date PSE7 catalogs.  Can anyone tell me the best way to attempt this?  Should I uninstall PSE7 and then install PSE8 so there will only be the up-to-date PSE5 catalogs available for converting to PSE8?  I'm not even sure where Vista puts the catalogs.  Everything seems to be different with a 64-bit system.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

You can find the PSE7 catalog file at the following location in Vista:
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\
There would a file having extension of .pse7db which you can delete to avoid PSE 8 grabbing it.
Let us know if you still have any queries,
    Cheers,

  • Lightroom, PSE5 organizer, Bridge and CS4

I currently use the PSE5 organizer with CS3.
I plan on upgrading to CS4.
My question is can I finally ditch the PSE5 organizer for either the new Bridge with CS4 or Lightroom 2.0?
Bridge with CS3 did not nearly provide enough organizing capabilities nor import PSE5 organizer catalogs. And then the prior version of Lightroom would not always properly import catalogs from PSE5 (which I still find hard to believe).
And the prior version of Lightroom also seemed to have problems importing catalogs. I also did not like that it wrote metadata to JPEG's as soon as you OPENED them. I have not confirmed whether Lightroom 2 corrects this or at least gives you that option. Is it an option now and how does it do importing catalogs from PSE5?
Thanks for any input on these concerns,
    BJBBJB

Thanks Jon.  Hopefully this is changed in the new version.<br /><br />I know that some very technical users confirmed that although the last version of Lightroom was "non-destructive", it did in fact write some metadata to the JPEG if opened (or I believe elsewhere I read even if just included in the libary, even if not edited. If this is incorrect, please let me know.  For example in PSE Organizer, it will only write anything to JPEG's if you invoke the command.<br /><br />Here is what I am talking about from a post about Lightroom:<br />http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/2008/qa-is-lightroom-destructive-to-jpegs/<br /><br />John Nack discuses a related issue here:<br />http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2007/02/nondestructive.html<br />To that point I would like to have the option of writing JPEG alterations to a sidecar file vs. directly into the JPEG file also.<br /><br />As to the first issue, you have to read down to the quotes to get to the discussion in question.  I saw this elsewhere also.  The point is, it changes the file date, messes with backups/syncs, etc.<br /><br /><Lightroom DOES actually make changes to your original .jpg file, but those changes Do Not effect the actual image. When you edit a .jpg file in Lightroom, EXIF and IPTC data is written to the .jpg file. (As well as edit meta data if you have that option enabled.) This can be a good thing as key words, copyright data, etc are added, but as a side effect, the file is re-saved and the date & time on the actual .jpg file is changed. This date & time change is annoying to me as I prefer that my original .jpg files not be changed from the date & time the image was captured. The date & time on a RAW file is not changed when I open it in Lightroom, why should Lightroom change this on my .jpg files? I found a workaround, which is to mark all of my original .jpg files as Read Only in the operating system before ever opening them in Lightroom. This works, but I do not feel that this is a very elegant solution, and I now have no way to open an edited .jpg in Camera Raw and retain the edits I made in Lightroom><br /><br />Thanks,<br />BJBBJB

  • PSE5 Organizer - Tagging

    Hello,
I want to do the following in PSE5 Organizer:
I want to tags Pictures with a keyboard shortcut instead of moving the Mouse for each Picture to tag it.
I'm a beginner on PSE5 Organizer. Does anybody know how I can do it.
    Thx very much

    Hi Colin
May be, I'm just one of the old keyboard-freaks .) hrhr
No, I often have the case, that there are 10-20 Pics with only little differences. When I scroll this pics in Original Size it's easy to "t"ag them with a key and sort 80-90% out. After that I set my view to "only untagged Pics" and there are only the good ones remaining.
When I scroll back to Thumbnail view and then mark them with CTRL+LEFT Click, I often see not enough of the differences and it's hard to decide which one to sort out. Tag the Pics while viewing them in Original Size is slow, cause I have to use the mouse for each pic.
Tagging Pics in "F11-View" :) is impossible at the Moment (as I know)and could work with such a function
    have a nice Day.

  • Help: PSE5 Organizer won't launch

Hi, I had been using PSE5 organizer for some time without any problem until recently. Suddenly the organizer would not launch even without showing any error message. I tried all kind of suggestions below yet still couldn't get it to launch:
    1) uninstall and reinstall PSE5
    2) Press CTRL during launching PSE5 organizer
    3) Delete Catalog folders and preference settings
Attached is the log file during Organizer's launch. Can someone help me with this?

Are you still getting the launch issue ?

  • PSE5 organizer on Windows 7 64-bit hangs on one catalog

Okay, I know using PSE5 on Win7 64-bit isn't officially supported, but a lot of people seem to be having success.
I'm migrating from XP, and backed up my catalog of 17000+ pictures.  When I installed PSE5 (and 5.0.2 patch) on Vista 64-bit, PSE restored my backup successfully, but when I hit "okay", just hangs until "not responding" without showing any pictures.  In the meantime my Win7 upgrade arrived, so I uninstalled PSE5 and installed Win7.
When I reinstalled PSE5 (and 5.0.2), now under Win7 64-bit, that same catalog worked!  My catalog was now fine after generating all the thumbnails, and I even moved all the photos using folder view.  I was very happy.  But the next morning, I was back to the catalog hanging.  If I create a new catalog with some pictures, it works fine, but obviously I want my old catalog.  I've tried rebooting, reinstalling, starting with a new catalog and restoring the backup, recovering the big catalog, deleting the thumbnail cache, deleting the status.dat file, looking at the catalog with MS Access, and even more, all multiple times.
Any ideas?  If it hadn't worked the one night, and if it didn't work on a new catalog, I would just assume that it wasn't possible.
    Thanks,
    John S.

    John,
Thanks for the suggestion.  I forgot to mention that I had tried the compatibility options already, but I gave them another shot (on the organizer executable).  Still no luck.
And when I say the program hangs, specifically it displays the organizer splash screen and then nothing else, even though the process (but not application) is listed in the Task Manager.

  • PSE5 organizer-like timeline display/search option in Bridge?

I'm a former PS elements organizer (PSE5) user who recently was forced into using Bridge once we upgraded new comps & bought CS4. I still am having trouble getting my keywords to work correctly in Bridge after I migrated all the pix - but that's not the reason for this post. Anyway, I'm still trying to make Bridge work for me as well as PSE organizer did (after 2 months of using Bridge and I'm still nowhere close). One thing that really helped me out was PSE's click-able timeline that went across the top of the window. I could click on any given month/year and it would take me to whatever I shot that month. It is an excellent feature when you have to find pix fast and you didn't adequately keyword your pix but know *when* you shot them. I can't for the life of me find anyway to display pix in this manner.
    Help?

As John said you can sort dates with the filter, but it will only display photos in that folder sorted by date.
If you want all the pictures shot in May 2008 displayed only, the filter will not do it.  You can however uses the Find function (Ctrl F) set up like this.
Set up 2 lines (click on + to add a line).   In first line have it read "Date Created, is greater than, 04/01/2008"
On second line have it read "Date Created, is less than, 05/01/2008"
Set match at "If all criteria met".
Not quite as easy as PSE5, but hey that's progress!  Or is it regress?
Note: when using the Find (search) make sure all lines are filled in correctly.  If you have a blank line it considers that part of search criteria.

This is for CS3, do not know if there were any changes in search capabilities for CS4.

  • PSE5 organizer tracking deleted and renamed folders and removing orphan thumbnails

If files are deleted or renamed within a folder that's being watched by organizer, the changes made through explorer or any other program don't seem to ever get reflected in Organizer. For example, I deleted an entire folder of junk photos through Windows. They still show in Organizer. How do I tell Organizer to re-scan the folder and remove orphan thumbnails from the catalog? The only thing I've been able to do at this point is to highlight them all and delete them. That's not bad for a single folder, but is a pain when I've done a lot of renaming, reorganizing, and creation and deletion of folders and subfolders under the watched folder.
I've used a program called Thumbs Plus for years, and it has an option "remove orphans" that you can do globally, or on a folder and its subfolders. I'm wondering if there's something similar in PSE.

Yes, I realize that in an "ideal" world we could do absolutely all of our organizing in "organizer" but I just can't see that becoming a reality. We have different users on this computer and there are certainly going to be times when we're already working in another program, including Windows Explorer. One would think that if Organizer is monitoring a folder it would detect all changes, or at least have a manual "rescan folder" or "remove option of some sort to help get the real files back in sync with the catalog. Hmmm. I'm still using eval mode and not sure that I like this part! Perhaps the next version will do better in this regard.

  • PSE5 Organizer changes?

I use PSE3 now (XP Pro). I've got about 6500 images in the organizer. I've noticed it starting to get slower and slower (I did catalog recover and it helped a little). What I really want to know is if there were any changes in version 5 (or 4 for that matter) that improves performance and total images that you can realistically use in the organizer (i.e. new database layout or something). I like some of the new features that version 4 and now 5 have added but they were not enough for me to move up. But the ability to have many more images in the organizer would be.
Also, any other changes that are specific to the organizer? The Adobe web site doesn't really say much about that (one thing I'd love is the ability to specify the top image in a stack at the time the stack is created rather than the multi-step process required now in V3).
    Thanks for your input...

My experiences are the same as those of Chris and DPX: I have no problems at all with Scrolling (assuming the Thumbnails have already been built - the first thing that I do after migrating to a new Version, I rebuild all Thumbnails - this is quite lengthy and I walk away from my PC during this 2-3 hours long Rebuild).
And with my 15'000 Photo-Files catalog, a V5 Tag Search typically also takes around 2-3 seconds (with V4 it was around 10 seconds).
What is still not fast: launching PSE. On my PC, with my 15'000 Photo-File Catalog, to start the Organizer (from the 2nd launch onwards after a reboot), it takes around 17 seconds. But I did not make any optimization attempt and do not know if I could shorten this time with reasonable methods. For me, these 17 seconds, even if not ideal, are not a real problem because I do not start the Organizer (or the Editor) again and again and again.

  • PSE 5 organizer converted to LR

Although there has been discussion about this, I can't find an answer.
I am a pse 5 user and am thinking about buying lr. Can I convert my organizer to the LR organizer with minimal hassle?
Am I better off keeping the pse5 organizer or better off using the lr organizer?
Is there a simple answer for these questions?
    Andy

I'd put it this way - Lr is designed to tightly integrate the library into the other modules. If you are using PSE as an organizer, you're *still* going to be importing images into Lr and dealing with the Library module to some extent.
Reversing it, if you organize in Lr, you can still use PSE as an editor but avoid PSE's organizer altogether. You'll get the full benefit of Virtual Copies as well. All of this would, at least, provide a cleaner workflow. Unless there is a PSE Organizer feature that is so compelling you'd have to have it, therefore I'd suggest using Lr as your organizer.
But it's your call, so it may be best to spend a few days trying it both ways and figuring out your preference before getting into major work with Lr.

  • PSE5 Editor problem, Vista OS

When I try to edit a photo a Vista Account Control window opens and asks for my password. After inserting the password another window opens and says that it is unable to connect to the editor application. Then the editor screen appears but the photo that I selected to edit is not present. I have used the editor many times in the past and was not asked for a password. I cannot get help from Adobe as PSE5 is history.

First, you would need to check to make sure you are running 5.0.2. In the PSE5 Organizer, Help->About Photoshop Elements. I'm guessing you do since it ran properly for some time.
Next, what happens if you repeat the Adobe technical support solution that worked once?
Finally, I would exit PSE, and try deleting your preference files. Then restart PSE and see if the problem goes away. The location of these files are given here under step 4. In fact, there are other trouble shooting tips here that you might try if nothing I have described helps.

  • PSE 8 Face Recognition and PSE5 "People" Tags

I have a lot of photos tagged in Windows PSE5  Organizer.  I have recently upgraded to PSE8 and need to think about how to align the two.
A simpliifed example: In my current catalog, I have two tags upder the tag category "People": Bert and Ernie.  Over the years, I have tagged pitures with both Bert and Ernie with both tags.   When I do a search on "Bert" I find pictures with just Bert and pictures with both Bert and Ernie.   This has been satisfactory.
Now PSE8 is finding Bert's face and asking me "Who is this?" or "Is this Bert?"  It creates brand new "Bert" tags.  (And oddly, they are in a different namespace than my old Bert tags since I don't get a "duplicate tag name" message.)
How should I align my old tags wtih the new?
    * Should I only drag the new "Bert" tag on those pictures with only Bert in them?
    * Or can I drag the new Bert tag on pictures with both Bert and Ernie?
I don't understand the technology well enough yet to know if it can get confused by the latter.

The Who Is This box is part of the new face-tagging in PSE 8.  When you invoke Find > Find People For Tagging, it will let you tag individual faces with People tags via the Who Is This box.  When a face is tagged, that tag can still be used like the old People tags -- you can assign it other pics, you can search for all pics that have the tag, etc.  But the Find People For Tagging command will also show the face associated with the tag.
For some people (including me), if you type the name of a pre-existing People tag exactly into the Who Is This Box, PSE will use it.  But some others have reported that PSE makes a new, duplicate tag in this case.  I don't know why.  (But it is clear that Adobe didn't really think through the issues of people with existing catalogs.)
The Find People For Tagging command creates its tags immediately under the People category.  You can merge the old tag with the new tag by selecting the old tag in the Keyword Tags pane, Edit > Select All, dragging the new tag (created by the Find People command) to those photos, and then deleting the old tag.   In the Keyword Tags pane, you can drag the new tag anyhere you want in the tag heirarchy.

  • Have PSE5, want to upgrade - QUESTIONS

I currently have PSE5 and would like to upgrade.  I realize that this may sound basic to most of you, but my questions are:
    (1)  What will happen with my images that are currently in my PSE5 Organizer?
    (2)  Do I need to purchase the entire PSE8 or 9 or is there a cheaper upgrade if I already have 5?
    (3)  Will I need to uninstall PSE5 or do I just install the new program on the same computer?
    Thanks.

If you are in the UK then there is an Upgrade version (cheaper) available.

  • PSE5 to PRE2

Is there a way to send photos/slideshows from PSE5/Organizer directly to Premire Elements 2 instead of the default version 3?
    Thanks,
    CR

Some observations about sending from PS Elements to Premiere Elements-
You can not send a Slide Show creation from PSE5 to Premiere Elements 2: the function of sending the slide show is only available from Photoshop Elements 5 to Premiere Elements 3.
You should be able to send photo files from PSE 5 to Premiere Elements 2. However, if Premiere Elements 3 is the most recently installed Premiere Elements version, it is probably set as the default version for sending from Photoshop Elements. My guess is that there is a setting in a Registry field, but I can not be specific on a field.
Of course, you could also just use Premiere Elements 2 and bring the photo files directly in as media in Premiere Elements. If you have the photo files in an Organizer collection, you can File > Export with Base Name option to keep the sequence of the collection and you can also decrease the pixel resolution of the photo files (as recommended for Premiere Elements) during the Export command.
Your question did not mention the other option to OUTPUT a WMV with DVD,NTSC/PAL size parameters from the PSE slide show process and bring that WMV file in to Premiere Elements 2. I am not suggesting it because there is an expectation that the image quality in the final output will be better if this intermediate step of the WMV file is not used. I referenced it here only to have a more complete discussion of the alternatives.

  • How do I get a clean start for catalog to start all over again?

Running PSE5 on Win XP w/SP3
I have not been able to get any information about how to recover a catalog from files that have been copied as a backup, so it looks like I'm forced to start all over again.  There are about 17000 images in the C: drive.  The images all seem to be OK.  A few days ago there was a properly operating catalog file (and all the others) there, too.
Since then, I have tried to learn how to make the former catalog file operative, but no luck.  Since then, I have read that just uninstalling and reinstalling PSE5 will do nothing to give me a clean start - that is, all the old (now problematical) catalog file trouble will still be there.
To start all over again seems like such a waste of time, since I have copies of all the catalog files as they were properly operating in March, but it seems that something important is missing and none of this stuff is useful in any way.  I'm not the PSE5 user, so I didn't know about the external catalog backup that can be done from within PSE5 - so the possibility to use that technique does not exist.  All I have is a straight copy of everything in the Documents and Settings.. ...Application Data\Adobe folder.  I've tried replacing the whole Adobe folder with the backup files, starting PSE5 and looking at the catalog, but that didn't work either. I just get the same old empty catalog.
So, the 'start all over' option seems like the only way out.  Anyone who has lost the catalog knows how much work is in the catalog, so any help with either making the old catalog file work through reconstruction somehow, or starting all over again, will be very helpful.  Someday, I'd like to learn how this happened.  Until then I'll be backing up the catalog file from within PSE5 to an external location...  Everytime there's a new entry in the catalog information.  That method seems simple enough that even I could do it.
    Thanks,
    Al
    (K3PXR)

I tried to open the resident 'My Catalog.psa' file.  PSE5 dutifully did that and the catalog information, such as tags and other information that would normally be present when looking at the Organizer is blank, as if nothing has ever been entered in the catalog.
The 'My Catalog.psa' file is about 600K (according to windows explorer) and resides in the 'Catalogs' folder.  Also there are:
    My Catalog-2.psa  about 3252K
    My Catalog-2.psa about 5380K
In the folder: 'Catalog Folders' were the folders:
    My Catalog
    My Catalog-1
In the folder My Catalog are the files:
      backupCt.dat  1K
      collstatus.dat  1K
      tagstatus.dat  1K
      thumb.5.cache  10K
In the folder My Catalog-1 is the file:
      tn.4.cache  32394 K
Above I say 'In the folder, Catalog Folders, were the folders My Catalog and My Catalog-1' because last night when shutting down, I didn't know what was in those folders.  I was too tired to check.
I did copy everything that was in the Adobe folder and all associated sub folders, including the folders above, to an SD flash card before I started to do anything else.  Becasue of this, I should be able to get back to the way it was before I started to do anything, then I opened the catalog file My Catalog-1.psa.  It said that it was made from an earlier version, asked to convert it and contained the 2002 to 2004 catalog information.  To the best of my knowledge, those photos were never entered in PSE5, and probably were from an earlier version of PS Album.
So, where is the information that was once in the PSE5 catalog?  Which files should contain that information?  Why can't the files simply be copied from the backup copies back on to the C:\ drive in the proper folders and then upon starting PSE5 see at least the catalog that was present when the copies of the files in the folders above were made?  What dumb mistakes could have been made to overwrite the information in the catalog and make the catalog appear empty?  If I don't learn this, I'll not be able to prevent it from happening again.
I'm not on the machine with the trouble at the moment, and since it is not my machine, I sometimes have trouble getting to it during normal waking hours.  I don't know the exact clicks and keystrokes that got the catalog from its normal function to appearing and functioning as if it is empty..
What exactly are the symptoms of "PSE5 doesn't like..."?  The catalog appears and functions as if it is empty - as if nothing ever has been or ever was entered into it.  PSE5 Organizer is operating normally as far as I can tell.  I cannot seem to locate the former catalog information and it has not loaded the former catalog file information.  A new test catalog was made and it opens and shows the thumbnails of its four images.  I hope that the test catalog I made didn't overwrite anything that would prevent going back to the original catalog information.  The copies of the files can be restored as they were a few months ago, though, because there is a copy of them on an SD card.
    Thanks,
    Al
