PSP Vintage Warmer 2 vs. Nomad Factory Analog Signature Pack

Hello,
I love my MacBook Pro DP 2.0ghz system running Logic Express. I am finding, however, that I need an analog "fattener" to make my tracks and mixes sound richer and more "old skool."
Based upon my budget, I have narrowed down my choices to these two:
PSP VintageWarmer 2 and
Nomad Factory Analog Signature Pack
Engineers seem to tilt in the direction of the PSP, but I think the Nomad stuff is just a little less well-known. Do any of you have direct experience with both plug-ins and can offer your opinions? I have posted similar questions on both the Nomad Factory and PSP forums, but I should have a less biased set of responses from this community, I would think.
Thank you,

Well, I have spent a few hours demoing PSP Vintage Warmer and the Nomad Factory Analog Signature Pack. Here are my first impressions:
1) The Nomad interfaces do actually make more sense to me. I still have not figured out how to get to the back panel of the PSP VW yet, although I didn’t really “research” the issue much.
2) I found that the Nomad’s analog overdriven distortion sounded very realistic. I liked the EQs, both the stand-alone and the channel strip versions. I had a goofy drum machine patch that I looped and tried these plugs on, and the EQ found life and realism in the patch that I did not think was even there.
Having said all that, I was even more impressed with the PSP Vintage Warmer:
3) The presets were 100x better. In fact, on the drum loop I was demoing with, EVERY preset sounded good, and better than the Nomad presets, even the clearly inappropriate ones!
4) Instead of modeling the buzziness of overdriven tubes, the PSP seems to do better at replicating the richer and more subtle warmth of tape saturation.
5) The PSP VW seemed to have a LOT more headroom and a LOT more depth. Things got analog fat in a hurry without tons of overdrive distortion break-up. I quickly tried it on other things, like vocals, rock guitars, B3, and bass, and found it to be extremely well-mannered, no matter what the input signal.
I can see how most fans of Vintage Warmer claim they use it on every track. You absolutely can’t screw the thing up, even if you have no real expertise in final mixing and mastering (like me), and if you actually DO have the knowledge and bat-ears to tweak this plug, I’m sure it delivers even more.
I still have more testing to do. My verdict is certainly not a final one, but right now my money (literally) might be on the PSP Vintage Warmer. I am using Logic, and the included EQ is great—I don’t need another, less “tweakable” one, even if it looks “vintage cool.” What I do need, however, is a plug that subtly saturates and warms the signal so that it sounds like I loaded a 2” tape 24-track Studer in a big-time expensive studio and tracked there. PSP’s Vintage Warmer nails that. With more study and experience, I might even be able to master with it, something I doubt could be done with the Analog Signature Pack.
Please give me you opinions and feel free to smack mine down, so long as your contentions are instructive and well-informed. Thanks!

  • Anyone using the Nomad Factory Analog Signature plug-ins?

...if so, how do they compare to, say, the UAD-1's Fairchild and Pultec? I'm in the middle of moving my studio so I can't download the demo's just yet, but if any of you have tried these I would love to hear your opinions.
It looks like there are three plug-ins in this bundle at the moment:
    Limiting Amplifier LM-662: http://www.nomadfactory.com/products/analog_signature/lm662.html (Fairchild 670)
    Program Equalizer EQP-4: http://www.nomadfactory.com/products/analog_signature/eqp4.html (Pultec)
    Studio Channel SC-226: http://www.nomadfactory.com/products/analog_signature/sc226.html
I am mostly interested in a more native approach (as opposed to the UAD card[s]) since I'll be running a MacPro soon, and should have plenty of horsepower to run native plugs. I am quite aware of the superior quality of Universal Audio's plug-ins, and perhaps I'm answering my own question here, I just want to know if there is a less-expensive/non-hardware-dependent alternative to the UAD cards/plug-ins.
I'm not familiar with Nomad Factory or the quality of their plug-ins for that matter, so please excuse my naivety in their regard.

joel, i demo'd these and was most impressed and i use the sonalksis as well.
the nomad stuff is really warm with any muddiness. the sonalksis are similar.
i really liked the analog channel.
just used all of these on a project, mainly for drums/bass.
dfh was the kit, and i've never heard it sound better. warm, detailed lower mids.
everyone/clients here in my studio have commented positively.
they are at the top of by "to buy soon" list, along with eliosounds air eq, linplugs saxlab, ray-space, musiclabs real guitar, and TTD pluggo series incl: colortone pro, and hydratone, et al (these are fanastic tone shapers!!!)
a good freebee is digitalfishphones bundle, the blockfish compressor is great for a free AU.
re logics own that "i can't live without": gain, direction mixer, compressor, ad limiter, lpeq.

  • PSP Vintage Warmer update.

    Hey Guys
finished searching the forum for more info on this.
I was just wondering if the latency issue on the vintage warmer 2 has been
    addressed yet.
I tried the demo (2.0.1) and when I put the warmer on a drum bus there was quite a bit of latency, no matter if the logic plug in delay compensation was on or not.
That was the latest version I think of that plug in.
It's quite unusable to me unless the latency gets fixed.
I hope someone knows either how to fix this or PSP has released a newer
    version I don't know about.
Anyway, hope they fix it soon or face mass exodus I think.
    -FTIWL

    Just use Debowelerificator version 1.78.
It sounds much better, and has NO latency,if you use the Triturator presets.
    Cheers

  • PSP Vintage Warmer released Universal Binary for Intel Macs

For those that care, PSP just released their UB version for Intel Macs. Many of us have been waiting for this and I just downloaded a demo version of this to play with. Supposed to be one of the better multiband compressor type of plug ins out there.

    Just use Debowelerificator version 1.78.
It sounds much better, and has NO latency,if you use the Triturator presets.
    Cheers

  • Looking for Universal equivalents for Vintage Warmer?

I want to start working on files between my G4/800 and my Macbook. The only problem is that I really rely heavily on PSP Vintage Warmer. I love the subtle boost it can give my mixes. Curious to know if there is anything close to it that is already Universal?
I've already written to PSP and honestly wouldn't hold my breath on anything for at least another year. How tragic!
I'd like to track on the G4 and do rudimentary mixing on the Macbook. Thanks in advance.

    'morning jord, extensive............
give nomad factory's analog signature series a demo.
they are top of my "to get" list along with Clint Eastwood's "Dollars" poncho.
the channel strip is excellent, and the fairchild limiter might fill the gap for VW.
did some drums (DFH) tracking with both. everytime i listen, it puts a big smile on my face. the tops aren't brittle, even with loud playback, and the bottom, especially the low mids, is very detailed.
the attack and release times are very vintage in their responce to transients.
the DFH sounds warm but very detailed.
also used these on a Jazz Bass, and the levelling effect of the fairchild worked a treat whilst staying very warm and defined.
as a result, these trks, which are rock/pop, won't need many plugs in the master bus!!
    recommended.

  • Vintage Warmer

Having all the dynamics plug-ins that come with Logic, do you guys think that Vintage Warmer is worth buying?
I am very happy with my mixes : Will I be happier?

If you are looking to make your mixes a little more analog sounding and add some subtle distortion then VW is supposed to do that. But there are some other (and free) ways to achieve similar results. If you are in particular after the sound of tape compression then you might try visiting the Noisevault website and downloading some of the free Impulse Reponses. Particularly they have some there from magnetic tape machines - I believe under the heading "Beamsonic Impulses". Load one of these babies into Space Designer set as an insert effect and it really does give you the character of magnetic tape, though it doesn't do the actual tape compression for you (you have to add a compressor in series to do that). The flavor is very convincing if that's what you are after.
There are many IR's at this site that will do this sort of thing for you including some taken from classic tube preamps. The tritone digital forum also has some IR's like this as well although you have to join the forum to see them and download them. I don't believe you have to actually use any of their software, though.
There are a few third party convolution plugs designed to work specifically with short IR's like these as opposed to IR's taken from rooms for reverb purposes. But Space designer is more than adequate for this task even across the output bus.
One thing worth noting is that sometimes these free IR's aren't recorded or edited that well. Some are too long and actually add a reverb-type tail to your sound when all you should have is the millisecond or so of an 1176 or LA2A etc. Remember, you can always load the IR into a Logic audio track (it's just a wav file) and in the sample editor, do a fade out or a silencing then re-save the file. Then you have the short impulse you want. Actually, Space Designer even allows you to shorten the IR right on the spot to fix this problem. So you might not even need to do that. Basically, Space Designer is good for a whole lot more than just reverb.

  • Vintage Warmer 2 and Logic issue...

Well, it seems that if I have the plug-in delay compensation turned OFF then the vintage warmer2 works fine on instrument or buss tracks. But if I have plug-in delay compensation turned ON, then I get weird things happening like the notes sounding like they're playing faster and then slowing down or notes being skipped entirely in the beginning. Anyone have experience with this? The problem is that by turning off the delay compensation it helps VW2 but screws up other plugins of mine. Why is this only a problem for VW2?

Let me clarify the "working fine" really means that there's still pops and clicks when the track starts playing, but at least the notes aren't being skipped or speeding up or slowing down. I've never seen anything like it. If I turn plug-in delay compensation ON, I get one set of problems and if I turn it OFF, I get a different set of problems. I want to buy this so badly, but I definitely don't want the nightmare of using it if this is how it behaves.
    EDIT:
I just read something very interesting in the Logic manual that states "Plug-in Delay compensation is useful for DSP cards (Powercore, UAD1, etc...). It recommends turning OFF the delay compensation if no DSP card is being used. Maybe that's why VW2 works fine with compensation turned off?

  • Analog plugins for audio units?

I have recently starting mixing on logic due to the need for recall (client adjustments). I used to mix thru my soundtracs mrx console & got a fantastic sound that was very warm. The problem i'm getting which has been debated many times before, is the digital cleaness of software which definately lacks warmth. Can anyone tell me the best analog modelling plugins for audio units? I've heard good things about the psp vintage warmer....how good is it & what else there?
    G5 DP1.8   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   LP7.1.1 + MOTU 2408 MRK3 + REASON3 + WAVES + VARIOUS

I´ve found that if I leave my Souncraft 1600 channels at unity gain and use the automation in Logic to mix I get the best of both: recall and warm.... The problem in digital is the summing...
just try it, it´s really easy: make a mix in the box and bounce it. after that change the outputs of the tracks from stereo1/2 to all the outputs you have in your sound card with the channels in the analog console at unity gain. Record the mix. even an 8 channel decent sound card will sound better IMO. I disceverd this years ago when using an AW8 in 16bit and aginst all logic it sounded better... with my Multiface was even better ... I still want to try my brand new Fireface800 with this trick. just compare both mixes and tell us what you´ve found.
...besides that you can use your mixer´s eq and analog stuff if you like...

  • Plugin suggestions for vinyl to digital

    Hi,
Is there a suggested series of plugins that would help me in my transfer of old albums into CDs?
From my own first couple of experiments I can see that I would need to boost the overall gain, try to remove some pops and cracks without losing too much of the high end, maybe add a little eq sparkle, etc.
    Thanks,
    John

Funny - because just currently I'm in the state of crazyness to import a lot of my vinyls to have it at hand.
There is one absolute thing to state at the very beginning:
It is and will surely remain impossible for a long time to retain the full analog resolution in digital.
So at the time being it is possible to have clicks and scratches removed which for a lot of people is what they want to achieve. But in every case you lose imagery and spacing of full analog recordings. Digital just can't do it. So for having the music on an easier to handle medium like a CD or iPod you will definitely have to live with a difference in listening experience - but maybe gain another important one by being able to listen to the old stuff at all !
Having that said I concentrate on trying to capture as much as possible but at the same time try to improve it for this different kind of listening experience.
If I want to have full listening pleasure nothing can compare to putting on the vinyl.
    So here's what I do.
Imagine the best possible analog chain and then some. That's where to start with.
An extremely high end turntable, arm and cartridge into a sophisticated RIAA amplifier. From there I go directly into the analog inputs of the DAW. I use no record out selector or distribution amplifier - just the best cable I can get hold of, I for mine do my own, which sometimes I change just to suit the character of the original programme.
Carefully set the record level to use maximum bit resolution, I personally go as high as possible and even take a few overs on drum peaks ( I will compress the peaks later anyway) instead of losing some of the already horrible digital resolution. For that you have to know how your A/D reacts - some sound very good when driven hot, other produce ghastly artefacts even a few milliseconds after the actual over until they "calm down again". You wont have a problem with any high end A/D though - don't even think about using cheap M-Audio, Roland or equivalent USB stuff: Think RME, Digi, MotU, Apogee or something in that category.
    Ok, record the record !
Add some seconds at the start and the beginning for a possible noise fingerprint. Of course a good turntable delivers no additional noise and hum, but still...
If you have the possibility to switch between the original and whats coming back thru the DAW while recording, you will clearly notice how the analog imagery and space gets lost. That is the initial loss that you have to live with.
So if you wanna retain maximum accuracy to the original you have to just import it into Waveburner now, maybe set your track markers and burn a CD.
Remember that everything from now on is deteriorating absolute accuracy, even the slightest level change adds calculating inside the precious audio data meaning floating point hassle and rounding errors.
The resulting CD will have lost another subtleties, partly because of the bouncing process in WB (the OS 9 version was able to burn without bounce, which was clearly better, unfortunately this feature got lost after the OS X transition), partly because of the burning process and partly because a "normal" CD player has crap converters compared to what's inside an Apogee or so.
But if you wanna transfer the material into the new century, meaning to better fit it into todays listening experience it means a remastering.
As we already know we can't expect to retain all analog subtleties - anyway, we can decide to at least fit the overall sound into what we are used nowadays in terms of loudness and density.
And to have it at hand on an iPod at AAC or mp3 compression, subtleties are not what's worth of making a fuss about anyway...
First step is opening the files in Logic's Sample Editor and drawing out the biggest clicks that go over the average program level - you can easily identify these by looking at the waveform. After finishing that you do a "Search Peak" to find out the remaining headroom of both files side A and side B, coz these will be most probably not the same. As I want to normalize the files now but at the same time retain the original intended balance between the tracks I have to change the gain on both side's files by the same amount and not just normalize both up to zero.
So if peak level on A is at, say, -9.5dB and B is at -9.7dB you rise both by 9.4dB. That gives the -0.1dB safety (to not provoke strange 0dB behaviour at some plugins that you might want to use later on) on file A and -0.3dB on file B.
If you have a worn out record you might want to add a Waves X-Click to remove audible record clicks and crackles. If you have the time and nerve to bounce in realtime then do so, that's clearly better than an offline bounce.
Close Logic now and import the file into Waveburner.
I have the following startup plugin chain in the mix domain:
    1. Waveburner Linear Phase EQ
    2. Waves S1 Imager
    3. Waves L2
    4. Waves TransX Multi
    5. PSP Vintage Warmer
    6. Waveburner MultiMeter
First thing is to remove rumble (it IS there, believe me, even if NS-10s may not play it back):
Set Linear Phase EQ Highpass Filter to 48dB/oct and at something under 40Hz. Check at MultiMeter's analyzer display and listen. You want to get rid of everything unwanted (because that affects the following compressors) but retain the bass. A look at the speaker's woofer when cranked will tell you clearly what happens here...
From now on it is entirely upon personal taste - so this is only my preferred workflow and probably only one of maybe a thousand other ways.
    2.
Vinyl is generally less stereo than today's CDs because of the immanent physical impossibillity of having one cutting head moving simultanously into two directions: On vinyl it was impossible to record anything out-of-phase. However, on our listening pleasure CD we can do it and most of the time we will like it !
S1 Stereo Imager does exactly that, use a width something around 1.40. At this point you can maybe correct a slightly disadjusted stereo balance of the original material with the Asymmetry and Rotation sliders.
Again use MultiMeter and your ears: The Goniometer will show left and right channel energy. If one channel is stronger the image will appear somewhat tilted - and your ears will tell if the singer stays centered when toggling mono/stereo (there's a mono switch in Vintage Warmer if you don't have one on your system).
    3.
Waves L2 for getting rid of the ugly dynamics that once was used to transport feelings in music .
Don't forget to switch off (noise) shaping and dither (you have enough noise on your file to mask bit switching, I promise...) and set it to 24bits (you recorded 24bits, didn't you ?)
Out ceiling again to -0.1, threshold at whatever you happen to like (or skip this if you don't like it at all which I very much understand).
    4.
I happen to like adding a bit liveliness and found Trans-X's preset "More Punch" a good starting point.
It is a little too much in the default, especially in high frequency, but after a little tweaking it gives a nice kind of refreshing effect to the music.
    5.
PSP Vintage Warmer. The secret weapon in every respect. I love it to bits. I think that is the ONE plugin I wouldn't ever wanna live without.
Difficult to say something in general here - it's a compressor, which implies the fact that it is program dependant.
BUT: I normally I always end up adding high eq by 1 to 3dB.
VW's High EQ for me is the only one in the digital domain that does what I know from analog as "adding some air". Turn hi freq to 16k, add 3dB and you know what I mean. Try turning "Freq" down until you're totally satisfied (normally at around 11 to 13k).
While you're at it try adding a little lo eq (again 1 or two dB) between 80 to 140 Hz.
The expected "HiFi-Loudness-Curve" is less noticeable than you fear.
because the best part, VW's multi band compression, enhances density anyway, so you don't lose the critical midrange:
Drive: no more than 4 dB (that's because we optimized our levels in the first place).
Knee: between 1 and 5% (same reason as above).
    Ceiling: -0.1
    Output: -0.1
Speed and Release is totally program dependant - you have to try for yourself.
If you set everything within reasonable amounts you will have a great sounding master now that will have a loudness increase (call it dynamics loss if you want) around 5 to 15dB.
It it is a whole different listening experience than the original vinyl but maybe it does for you what it did for me: I listen to all this great music again that I used to have in my life and that I ignored for so long.
(So thank you, Steve Jobs, for having the iPod/iTunes-vision. Took me a while but now I know what you meant.)
    So have fun,
may this be of help to bring back your valuable record collection into everyday life !
    Cheers,

  • How Much Mac Do I Need? - Jump from G5 to MacPro w/LogicPro

I'm consistently hitting the wall with my Dual 2.0ghz, 4GB of RAM G5 system while trying to mix typical pop/rock projects (that is, I keep getting the system overload message, even when I freeze most of my tracks).
I'm getting ready to trade up to a recent-model MacPro, but I'm a little confused as to which one to get. Yes, I know I should always buy the fastest CPU I can afford, but I can't afford that one, and I'm wondering whether one of last year's models will work for me.
Specifically, I'd love to get away with picking up a 2008 quad-core or even a dual-core machine, and I'm hoping that people who are mixing comparable projects on those computers can chime in with their experiences. My goal is to be able to mix, at the highest i/o buffer setting, without having to freeze tracks, or worry about triggering the dreaded system overload message.
Here's the rundown on one of my typical projects:
    Tracks:
    - 28 tracks of audio
    - 10 virtual instruments (mostly Rhodes, GPO piano, Wurly, EXS24 percussion, rather than CPU-intensive synths)
    - BFD2 for all drums
    FX:
    - UAD1 eqs and compressors on many tracks
    - NI Guitar Rig 3 on 2 to 4 guitar audio tracks
    - 2 or 3 PSP Vintage Warmer 2 plugins
    - I don't use many other 3rd party plugins, or Logic's more CPU-intensive plugins
    - I do like to set up a few longer delays as send FX (semi dub-style), which really seems to put a hit on my processor
As I said, I'd love to hear from people who are doing similar projects on 2008 MacPros, but anyone's input would be very welcome. Thanks!

I recommend the 8 core 2008 for bang for the buck today. There are already many websites with various (not necessarily Logic specific) benchmarks which compare performance.
I bought a 2008 when the 2009 was released. The performance is much better than the comparably priced quad 2009, and can match the 2009 2xQuad in some cases. RAM is much cheaper for the 2008, and the slots are actually designed for the machine (gasp!).
So the performance can be better with the 2k9 for 2 technologies: Higher memory throughput and hyperthreading. Which does have benefits. Some test cases/benchmarks concluded that processes which are not designed for multithreaded execution can execute faster on a 2k8 (though Logic is designed for this). Coming from a dual G5, you'll be taking a great improvement. The potential for performance (and being on the bleeding edge of Intel's 2nd gen of hyperthreading) vs cost made it a really obvious decision. You can use the cash you saved for nodes. I venture it will take some time before 64 bit starts moving from the primary development arenas to you.
Oh yea - the 2008 had more favorable connectivity for my needs/kit.
According to the website, they are in stock here:

  • Logic 7.1 Crashses!!!!  Someone help!

    Hi everyone,
I have been using Logic for 4 years now, and this has just happened this past week. It seems that when I deal with an audio file in Logic it crashes. It gives the "Logic has unexpectedly quit . . ."; pinwheel of death etc. This happens in several spots, loading it in, bouncing etc.
I have Logic 7.1, with a MOTU 828, and here's what I've tried so far:
    - Taking the file "com.apple.pro.plist" out of it's directory, and into my desktop. That doesn't help, and it seems to make a new one every time I load logic.
    - Holding control on start up to load without core audio, still fails.
    - turning off my MOTU, starting Logic, then using the core audio.
    - Resetting the MOTU per instructions on their website.
    - Resetting my keyboard shortcuts to default.
    - Trying another template - logic stock templates as well.
    - I've ran the AU tester and removed two plugins that crashed/ didn't work, still no love. I do have several 3rd party plugins - V-Station, Battery 3, Waldorf pack, PSP Vintage Warmer etc., however they appear to be OK.
    * I THINK it might have something to do with my RAM? Thoughts? Can anyone PLEASE suggest something else for me to try?
    Thank you!!!
    Tyler.
As a follow up, I just tried using different parts of my RAM. I have 2x 256, and 2x 512.
I tried running the 2x 256, and then the 2x 512, and logic still crashes!!!
    ARGHHH!!!!
    Please Help! SOS!

  • Best way to use Mastering Plug ins and order to use in the chain?

I know this can vary from track to track, and it all may depend on the style of music. I just wanted to know if anyone had a set order that they find works best when using the mastering plug ins? Currently I master many different ways, usually by starting with Multiband Compressor, or Channel EQ and then moving to Linear Phase EQ, or sometimes not, then to Adaptive Limiter. At the end I'll sometimes throw an analysis plug in, or use Match EQ using settings from recorded tracks from other bands. Any suggestions for getting the highest push possible on a mix, while retaining sonic clarity? Let me know what you think, and thanks for your answer.
    Message was edited by: Sodacon

For 'rough' mastering, I find that I use very little Linear Phase EQ, multi-band compressor (a touch) and often PSP Vintage Warmer or Tritone Digital's ColorTone Pro, or if I move the project over to PT, the Cranesong Phoenix which hopefully one day will be available as an AU. Sometimes I'll use Adaptive Limiter. Of course, it all depends on the material: everything I do is rock music destined for CD production so YMMV. At the 'real' mastering stage I use a mastering studio.
I love the Sonnox stuff, but I find that I use those plugs much more on individual tracks except Inflator which can be amazing.
    +while retaining sonic clarity+
You might want to check a demo of the MPL-1 from Kjaerhus. I was testing it out for a while, and since it was released in AU format (a first for Kjaerhus - a tiny Danish company known for their Golden Channel RTAS) I've been using it a lot - very clean and transparent when set right.

  • AU and VST third-party plugs not showing up

This is in the Mac CS5.5 official released version.  They did show up and worked fine in Audition Mac Beta.
Specifically, I have PSP Vintage Warmer, and WaveArts Masterverb and Track Plug.  They do show up and work in MOTU Digital Performer, Final Cut Pro, and SoundTrack Pro.
This is my first post here.  I'm looking forward to using Audition in my post workflow.
    THANK YOU!
    Jim Curtis

Ahh...  I don't remember using the Effects > Audio Plug-in Manager to scan for them in the beta, but maybe I just forgot.  It was months ago.
Anyway, that fixed it.  I can access them now.  Thanks very much.

  • Mixing and Matering with Logics Audio Effects Plugins

I have a general question for those using Logic Pro to mix and perhaps master music. I've had the software for approximately a year-and-a-half. In that time I've auditioned several high-end, third-party, native AU plugins for EQ and compression (Waves SSL, PSP, Sonalksis, etc.) Certainly they sound great. But in the end, I often find myself getting just as good a sound with Logic's own plugs after a little bit of work. It's not as quick, mind you - and you really do have to play to get to know the plugins well because they're capable of some horrible sounds too. But the good stuff is in there.
I see Logic's EQ's and compressors trashed sometimes in forums and I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Yes, I'm familiar with UAD and the quality/authenticity of their emulations. But at the end of the day, all I need is a great sound - not a particular historic sound, as good as some of those may be.
The one thing I haven't been able to hear is Focusrite's Liquid Mix and I'm tempted to buy one just to hear it, with, of course the option to return it if it's nothing special.
So here's what I want to know - and I am just curious. Are any of you out there mixing in the box with just Logic's plugins and really getting great results? Or perhaps mixing with mostly Logic plugins and a few indispensible others (L1 comes to mind). If so, are you mixing pop/rock, R&B, acoustic - basically, something other than electronic/dance?
    Thanks

Are any of you out there mixing in the box with just Logic's plugins and really getting great results? Or perhaps mixing with mostly Logic plugins and a few indispensible others
My 'indispensible others' would be Izotope's Ozone, PSP Vintage Warmer and to a lesser extent TriTone's ColorTone Pro.
But in the end, I often find myself getting just as good a sound with Logic's own plugs after a little bit of work. It's not as quick, mind you - and you really do have to play to get to know the plugins well
I agree completely. I'm often reading here that this plug or that gadget is a must have - actually, learning what's already in the Logic Pro suite is often the solution. The essential ingredient are ears, and the ability to know what sound you're looking for, as opposed to twiddling in the hope that you'll come across a happy accident.
because they're capable of some horrible sounds too
If you want to hear some truly awful sounds, Ozone can destroy a mix in short order

  • Premiere Pro Mac - VST & Audio Unit Support - Something is wrong....

I run PPRO on Mac Lion.
I AM aware of the fact that PPRO is a 64 bit application.
Adobe does NOT seem to be aware of the fact that most audio plugs are 32 bit.
Reason for this is that there is very little need for a simple Compressor or EQ to be able to address more than 2GB of RAM ;-)
So most professional DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) which are 64 bit IMPLEMENTS a bridge that allows the app to use 32 bit Audio Effects.
I own and operate a recording studio and beta test for a lot of VST/AudioUnit vendors. None of them (the important ones) are planning 64 bit, anytime soon.
So either I am missing the obvios and I CAN use 32 bit VST/Audio Units in PPRO on Mac ---- Or adobe needs to address this ASAP.
If not, well anyone relying on audio effects will have to NOT edit his audio in PPRO ????
I hope I am missing the totally obvious, I mean, ALL other NLEs have GREAT solutions for Audio Effects - In PPRO I am confined to the adobe audio effects which are not really on par with professional audio plugs.
    Any advise would be nice....

This is from page 326 of the PrCS5 user guide:
Premiere Pro supports the Steinberg VST (Virtual Studio Technology) audio plug-in format so that you can add VST audio effects from third-party vendors. Premiere Pro includes VST plug-in effects that are available in both the Audio Mixer and the Effect Controls panel. Track-based VST plug-ins may provide additional controls. Apply VST effects the same way you apply other audio effects to tracks or clips. In the Effects And Sends panels of the Audio Mixer, VST effects appear in the Effect Selection menus. In the Effects panel, they appear in the Audio Effects bin so you can apply them to individual clips. In most cases, VST effects appear in the Audio Effects bin and track type that corresponds to the number of channels the effect supports. For example, stereo VST effects appear in the Audio Mixer track effect menus for stereo tracks only, and in the Stereo bin in the Audio Effects bin in the Effects panel. After you apply any VST effect, you can open a window with all of its controls. You can leave multiple VST editor windows open as long as you want, such as when automating effects, but Premiere Pro closes all VST editor windows when you close the project. If you previously installed a VST-compatible application other than Premiere Pro, Premiere Pro finds VST effects in the VST folder that already exists. Inside the Plug-ins folder of the Premiere Pro application folder, there is also a VSTPlugins folder with plug-ins that are used only by Premiere Pro.
However, I have never gotten my VST effects to even show up in Pr Mac.  They do work in Au (also FCP, STP and MOTU DP), so I conclude it's a bug, or an undocumented and/or unavowed disimplementation.
I wish they did work, because I like to us PSP Vintage Warmer on VO tracks.  I've learned to get by with the Multiband Compressor, or send to Audition.
