PSU Dead?????

I think my PSU died.  Using the computer for just some emails when it just shutdown. No power, no lights, no nothing.
I tested with a voltmeter on one of the 12v fan plugs and it showed nothing. Is it a dead PSU or possibly the MB.
Any answers appreciated
Thanks Mel
PSU: Antec Neopower 480 (3 months old)
MB:  MSI Neo Platinum 2
MEM: 2X512 Corsair dual channel 3200
2 WD 120g HD's
LG 4060 DVD Burner
LG 8163 DVDROM
MSI 6600gt vdt 128

Sure sounds like its dead.
Get an Enermax, Tagan, Hiper or OCZ with at least 24 amps on the 12v rails.  Even higher provides you more insurance and peace of mind.
Good luck.

  • PSU Dead and MOBO K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI Too, what can i do???

Yerterday i was sleeping and suddenly the PSU (Rosewill RP550) Blow away, I Inmediatly check the PSU and guess what? Fried!!! Then i went to sleep again to check the other components in the mourning. The next Mourning i took my old PSU and put an 20 to 24 pin adapter, placed it in the mobo and doesn´t work, next i put a friend PSU with 24 pin connector and nothing, next i test 2 or 3 PSUs more and nothing. After all this tests i started thinking that the mobo was having electrical issues. I went to a friend house and tested the processor ( AMD 3000+ CBBID 0505) and the Memory (OCZ Rev2 1GB), they worked. I couldn´t test the Video Card (MSI 6600GT 128MB) because i dont have any other mobo to check it.
Its Important to tell you guys that when i try to plug the PSU power conector to the MOBO the Fans and network led start for 1 second, then turn off, i try to start the computer and nothing happend. All this with the four PSUs.
A friend of mine which is a computers Technician told me that took off the MOBO batery, CPU and Memory and put Aluminiun foil all over and around the mobo to eliminate any static on it. What do yo think about this??
Please if you have any suggestion, i´ll be happy.
BTW: Which are the procedures to RMA both componnets ? I bough the mobo and PSU and the others components  on www.newegg.com on May 09 2005.
    Thanks for all.

Got my Newegg RMA board back (K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI) today!  I mailed it to them Friday, they got it Monday and a replacement back to me today.  Excellent turnaround
The board looks like it was refurbished because the anti-static bag was a bit wrinkled and had pinholes all over one section where the board couldn't have caused it.  Also, it had bios 3.0 on it!  The rest of the stuff in the board looks new but it didn't come with the USB 2.0 bracket which the first board I got did.  Live and learn.
I flashed it to 3.2 and all appears to be working.  Not gonna try 3.3.  I read somewhere that there may be a beta 3.5 bios out somewhere.  Maybe I'll wait till that one goes final.
Haven't had any experience with MSI support as far as RMA's but if this replacement board craps out I'll try them next.

  • KT4AV killed my PSU?

Hi! I new here. wondering you guys can get me some opinion about that is going on with my desktop.
My mobo killed 4 PSUs with the same model listed below. All of them do NOT have any burn smell.
    What I have tried.
    - 1st PSU died - got burn smell.
    - replaced with 2nd PSU (model listed below) been working fine for pass 6 months 24 hours desktop running. sometimes i shutdown the desktop and let it run again.
    - 2nd PSU died - no power etc. NO burn smell. MOBO etc no burn mark or smell.
    - replaced 3rd PSU (same model) it died again after 1 hour of installation. Again no burn mark smell etc.
    - next day i bought a KOSS AVR Activa A-80. Check for power leakage from the casing with a test pen (test out the pen is working) - NO power leakage. Connected the desktop with replacement PSU now with the AVR. able to power up and run the system with any problem - runnining normal for 24 hours for 4 weeks.
    - today, I'm facing the same problem.  PSU dead again!
please tell me. Am i using a crappy PSU? I think i ought to buy a better PSU and see how it goes. If it is the same, I'm going to bang my head on the wall
    thanks!
    My system specs:-
NO Overclocked ETC. Plain default specs running 24 hours.

ok extra work for me over my weekends! reseat stuffs from mobo. clean the CPU fan and things suggested by great people here giving me good suggestions.
I going to get a replacement PSU but i doubt it will be stable. I'm in office right now so i'm not be able to get the exact voltage specs from the PSU.
i dont think is a power point or power surge power because the last PSU died was with a AVR connected.  Must be bloody PSU!!
But this mobo never had an issue killing the PSU right?
Asenius - nope. I dont have a special condition. just power point (socket)--> AVR --> desktop. well there are no beep sounds.  Yup I gotta do that and see.
hexanir - 1 hour PSU died - next day got the same PSU replaced. was tested out working on another computer - it work fine for several months after that and died again.
multimeter is way out of my league   For D-bracket USB i need to check whether i got or not. Bad electricity - i have bought an AVR but still same.
Sharp - I'll get you the specs later when i'm at home.

[Mod edit: Please do not include personal/private information when making a public post. Thanks!]

Well the other two are not as easy. The PSU and the CPU may also be the cause.
What I would do next though is to remove all but what is needed to post. For that you only need the MB, CPU, one stick of RAM and a vid card along with one boot device. No USB/Firewire devices should be attached nor any PCI cards. Do a Bios reset. If this does not get it done...
Reseat the CPU. Check the pins for any broken or bent pins.
    Try another PSU.
Unfortunately you hit on one that is not real easy to diagnos as there are many things that can be the cause. The CPU talks to basically everything and when it does not initialize almost anything can be the cause. The most common being; RAM, PSU, Dead CPU.

  • K7N2G - ILSR problems ...

Right, this is a long story!
I got my K7N2G a few months ago now, started by using PC2100 (Generic, lol) ... it worked quite well - I can't remember getting crashes!
I then upgraded to 2x256Mb PC3200 TwinMOS, not knowing about this whole picky RAM thing - I'd heard it was good RAM so I got me some ... after replacing one because of a bad stick I had both sticks running well, I then started getting lotsa freezing in games (esp. UT2003) and I thought it was just overheating but after doing some overall quietening (Zalman GPU, new CPU cooler), it was still crashing ... then the fan on my chipset died so I stuck a new 40mm fan ontop and seemed allright but was still getting the odd freeze in-game! Eventually was told that the 40mm fan wasn't actually needed so I removed it and things didn't get any worse ...
Untill now, I get crashing in game very often and I have lost my USB ports)!
Is any of this todo with my RAM, or chipset fan removal?
Also this is an engineering release ... is it safe to update it with the latest K7N2G-ILSR BIOS?
I had less problems with my ECS K7S5A, lol!
Thanks for reading and hope you can help ... Alex

Sorry to hear that your dead in the water. :(  Since your going to buy a new PSU "DO NOT BUY A QTEC" Stick with an Antec or Enermax 400W+, you may pay a little extra but this is one of the most important  components of you system so it's worth it. It will help eliminate a lot of problems in the future.

  • NF980 driver problems

    My system:
Phenom II 965 BE 125 watt version
    MSI NF980 motherboard bios 1.0
    4gb Patriot 1333 mhz DDR3 7-7-7-20 1.7v RAM
    GTX 275
    300gb Velociraptor
300gb SATA hard drive (forget the brand)
Seasonic 750watt PSU <--- dead, awaiting replacement
    Windows 7 nVidia Edition
    Problem:
Cannot flash bios with m-flash (recently found out that m-flash doesn't work well, will try to update with forum provided flashing once I get a new power supply, the seasonic just died).
Running off of onboard video: tried to update/install drivers: blue screen, or completely blank screen
Methods of trying to install drivers: from nVidia, from provided CD (or is it a DVD? doesn't mattter in either case), from MSI, from Windows update utility. Tried installing with both hybrid SLI enabled and disabled.
Most of the time, it ends up in a blank screen, and I'll have to reset it. No drivers are installed (still shows up in Windows update as an item to be installed).
I don't think the bios version should have that much of an effect on the drivers you install, so any ideas? Or do I just have a bad motherboard?
Oh, and any idea what it means when the power LED flashes 3 times? It happened a couple of times when I tried to start it up, wiggling around the main power connector usually cleared up the problem and let it start normally. This morning, however, it flashed 3 times, there was a loud pop, and the power supply was gone.
Oh yeah, and as of this post, this system is approximately 1 day old.

Ok, well, I'm still not sure everything is running properly. The nVidia software cannot start, and it cannot detect the chip. GPU-Z detects the chip just fine, but it the GPU Load, Memory Controller Load, and Video Engine Load all show 0%, even while playing games. I haven't reinstalled the GTX 275 yet, running on an Antec 350 watt power supply while waiting for the Seasonic to come back from RMA. I tried uninstalling the nVidia display drivers so that I can reinstall them and see what happens, and I end up with a blue screen again.
Blue screen message: Video card driver cannot recover from timeout or something along those lines.
    Update:
Reinstalled the drivers in normal mode (not safe mode), and after trying a couple of times (rebooting the system at least 3 or 4 times), I got it to install without a reboot/blue screen. I guess my system is very temperamental, either that, or the millionth time is the charm. In either case, working properly now, nVidia control panel comes up correctly, etc. Now to do something about the temperature... (76 C min on idle, over 90 C on load in a Cooler Master Cosmos case with 4 70+ CFM fans and one 60 CFM fan).
And any idea what Temp2 in speedfan is? It's showing a temperature of 94C. And no, it is not the GPU, the GPU shows 78C as of the time this was written.

  • Inspire P580 PSU seems dead

    Hello!
I need some help. I've got an Inspire P580 Speaker set from a friend but it seems that the power supply is dead. I tested the kit with my P380's PSU justo to see if it was in fact from the PSU and the kit worked, but as would be expected, poorly since the difference in power output from the PSUs is there.
So, my question is where do I get a new PSU to the P580 ?
    Thanks!

If it's an external power supply. The answer is YES!

  • K8N Neo - Dead M/B or PSU

    Hello all,
Just found this forum after a bit of a search.
My main PC has decided that its not going to work anymore :( . Tried the complete barebones test and nothing no beeps or anything. The only sign of life is the PWR on LED and Hard Drive LED flashing alternately. Any thoughts? it has been dead for a month or so but I have not been around to look at it depth till now.
My gut feeling is a duff PSU but my only spare ones are 300w versions without the extra 4pin connector to the motherboard.
I look forward to your responses.
    Processor is a 3000+

The PSu has a 20pin connector as well as a seperate 4pin lead.
Typical of the local suppliers they do not have one in stock would have to order one specifically which would take 5days or so
Reading and having a think about it, the PSU I have I am assuming has only 1 12V rail, would it be best to get one that has either 2 or 3 12v rails. I am thinking maybe http://www.corsairmicro.com/corsair/HX_power_supply.html

  • Dead board or PSU? failed XP install?

    I have a MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI Motherboard with Hiper Type R 580W PSU
Couple of months go I left the power off to the PC for a few days(The switch on the back of the PSU off). On turning it back on (PSU switch lit up) the PC wouldn't power up on the front button, no LED's nothing. After a considerable amount of wire waggling and taking it apart a couple of times it did power up and has been fine for the last couple of months so long as you don't turn the power off on the PSU switch on the back of the PC. And...Windows XP died on me at the weekend, wouldn't start in safe mode etc and failed on installing over the top of the old system so went for a clean install (I have all my storage files on a second drive so that's safe) there's only the system on the first drive.
I reformatted the drive the long way which went OK but when Windows started to install it failed saying a whole load of .dll files couldn't be copied. I shut everything down to go back to it the day after but on connecting the power sure enough I have no power again, PSU switch lights up but apart from that it's dead. I've tried jumping the front power switch terminals on the board with no luck.
So two issues, no power which I assume is either a dead or touchy board or PSU. There's no light on the board so any way of testing the PSU? I don't have a spare that I can try.
If and when I do get power any ideas on the failed windows install?
I'd appreciate your help before I start throwing money at it getting a new PSU or motherboard.
    Cheers
    Al

Disconnect all of the drives, remove all of the memory and pci cards except for only only one stick in the slot nearest to the cpu and one video card.  Also disconnect the AC cord before doing a cmos clear.
See if it will start up with this barebones configuration.  Then add the other sticks of memory.  If it still works, run memtest86 to check the memory.  5 passes without any errors should be enough.
Add the drives one at a time to see if any of them are causing the problem.  Once you know that the drives are good, do the same with the PCI cards.  Let us know the results.
It would help if we knew what was in the system.  Use the info that I provide on my systems as a guide to what we need to know.

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

  • Dead board or psu

have been running this system for a month now and last week I turned puter on and the fans started off running very slow (not the whine that I am used to  4-80's and 1-120 fans) any way the fans quit working and the comp did not start tried several more time by pushing the on button. the NEW ultra xconnect psu blew a fuse I removed the ps from the case and opened it up and replaced the fuse I then plugged back in the 110v and nothing else I jumpered pin 3 and 4 and blew another fuse rma time Ultra sent me a new psu upon installing this new psu i repaced the asus mother board with a chaintech znf3-250 (couple of months old) unit won't power on ....installed new k8n-neo unit won't power on .....power supply will start to spin fans and then shut down if I disconnet the 4pin wire from the motherboard the psu will start and keep running (the powersupply) help don't know where i went wrong

  • Symptoms of a Dead PSU

Hello, Can somebody please post symptoms that point
to a faulty PSU. Such as will any fans even turn on,
will there even be any mobo beeps, etc.I need this to
     figure out my comp's problem.
      Thanks

My PSU started to produce the "burning-plastic" smell when I put too many fans on the "Fan Only" wire. I overloaded the wire and the fams were running at half speed -or not at all.
Turns out the "FanOnly" Wires were meant to only have 1 Fan on them. The regular PSU connectors can transfer the full Wattage, so I would try chaining everything together from the regular wires - if your PSU differentiates that is.
    I have an Antec 430WATT True-Power PSU.

  • Not powering up. Dead logic or PSU?

    Hi people,
I've been given a G5 DP and it doesn't power up. the power LED works only when you press it, turns off once you let it go and the fans kick for a split second then nothing. I open the case to inspect what hardware is installed. All the usual components and only 1 x 512mb stick. is it designed to run single memory or in pairs? so not sure if that would stop it booting or if the problem lies with the power supply or worse.. logic board.
    Thanks for your time

    Hello,
Also Check the PRAM Battery. Try starting up the G5 without the battery in place. Also, when installing RAM, it must be installed in exact matching sets from the center outward. (Slots are numbered from top to bottom: 4,3,2,1,1,2,3,4) Install RAM starting in slots 1 and 1 then 2 and 2 then 3 and 3 then 4 and 4. Also try zapping the PMU. (Small little button on the logic board behind fan assembly)

There should be two DIMMs (RAM must be installed in pairs) and this could be a cause for not starting.
If the Mac has no RAM you should see fans spinning and everything operating but the Power LED should begin blinking at you saying theres no RAM in it. It will be like +blink blink pause, blink blink pause+ etc.
    Regards.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR Dead? Help!

    Hey all,
Well, the other day I was on my computer playing a game when my mobo fan started making an odd noise (as if switching rpm), so I took off the side of my case and took a look inside. Everything seemed to be functioning properly, then I switched my cpu fan speed via the pci slot speed control. As I switched from High-Medium-Low, I noticed that the fan actually slowed to the point where I could see the blades spinning, at least for a second or so. I found that rather odd, seeing as how I've never seen a fan (especially a cpu fan) slow to the point that I could see the blades spin. Anyway, a couple of hours later, I shut down and went to sleep.
The next day I had my comp on for about maybe 30mins to an hour or so when suddenly I heard an alarm from the computer speaker, so I was like, ":censored:?" since I had never heard it before. It was evidently the temperature warning, which I had set to 70C. So I shut down within 15 seconds and opened up the side of my case.
I noticed that the cpu fan wasn't moving at all (usually I'd open the case in time to see the spin-down). So I turned the computer back on and the fan didn't budge, so I immediately powered down, assuming that the CPU Fan had died. Later on, I hooked the fan itself up to a free power cord in my sister's computer and booted up, along with the speed controller, flipping from medium to high to low without any problems.
I then did screwed the fan back to the heatsink in my comp and booted up. I went into the bios an noticed that the rpm was 8k, which is way too high for my fan (normally 5k). So i began switching from high, medium, to low once again, then I saw that the rpm reader in the bios went to 0. So I looked back in the side of my case and saw that the cpu fan was once again dead. At this point I concluded that it was the fan and was about to order the Volcano 12.
A day later I placed the fan inside my sister's computer on a free cord, yet again, and yet again, it worked fine.
I once again put it in my computer to test and this time it worked fine, even while switching between speeds. Unfortunately, I then noticed that the mobo fan was not moving, then began to move.
Well, I'm guessing now that it's simply the motherboard that has a short, since both the motherboard fan as well as the cpu fan have randomly been dying the past few days. The motherboard fan; however, has switched rpm many times in the past from 5k to 3k.
It could also be a PSU problem, but I have Antec 400watt psu and it's been working fine for the past 2 years, so I doubt it. I've had the motherboard for a little over a year. I upgraded my cpu from 2200+ to 3000+ in July. That's also when I bought the cpu fan. The motherboard fan began fluctuating in rpm noticeably back in April or May of this year.
Yesterday, I used the computer again and had it on for about 2 hours or so and I had speedfan monitoring the temps and the rpm. The temps stayed relatively stable: 48 cpu, 44 mobo.
But alas, the RPMs were totally [blame me for the swear filter] up. At one point, both the mobo and cpu fan speeds were reading 0, even though both continued to spin within the case and the temps remained the same. Then after 30mins or so, they cpu fan began reading again at 40,000-42,000rpm, which is obviously incorrect, seeing as the fan is rated for around 5k. I got/get the same readings in the bios, both fans reading at 0rpm as they continue to physically spin.
Also, during a number of times that I've started up the comp within the past few days, the motherboard northbridge fan wasn't spinning at all and didn't begin to until a few minutes into my windows session.
Also, I took out the NB fan and noticed a slight crack in the back of it.
I was considering simply just buying the Volcano 12 and the MSI K7N2 Delta2 Platinum rather than RMAing the mobo. Then perhaps an Antec 550W psu, if necessary.
Any ideas what I should replace and in which order? And has anybody else encountered any similar problems with this mobo (at least with the mobo rpm, which has been a prob for about 6months on and off)?
I bought the mobo along with a 2200+ in July of 2003. I upgraded the ram from 256 to 512 in April 2004 (which is around the time I started hearing rpm probs with the mobo fan) and I upgraded the cpu in July of 2004
    Many Thanks!

Could be a fluctuating PSU that's breaking down power to the MB. You have a whole lot of components dragging that PSU down. With what you have in your rig I would run either an Antec or Enermax 550W. Best way to be sure is to borrow a PSU or buy one from a store with a good return policy so that you can return it if indeed it turns out to be the MB. If I don't have your board here on my bench to test the only thing I can suggest to you is to swap out components unfortunately.

  • GTX680 Twin Frozr 3 dead fan

So this card is like one and a half years old.  The back fan over the chip has stopped working, never made any noise or gave indication that it was about to go dead.
Ive contacted my manufacturer  (AVA Direct) and they want me to RMA the card through you, which (no offense) I want to avoid at all costs because it can take ages to RMA through MSI.
So im essentially left with three options.  RMA if and be out a card for a month, or get that GELID Icy Pro aftermarket cooler and install that, which I can only assume voids the warranty.
I watched a video on youtube with a guy who did this exact thing with the exact card, and in the end he said that the fan was dead on the aftermarket as well, and that it must be a PCB board issue, as the fans both worked directly plugging them into the mobo.
This leaves me with a third option perhaps, and that would be unplugging the fan connectors, getting a fan connecter extension, and sticking them into my mobo smart fan slots.  This is the cheapest route and the fastest.  Im curious what kind of extension I need (assume its a 4 pin extension) I haven't removed the actual card fan plug yet as it looks difficult to do (not a lot of room) and would rather wait to hear from someone who knows these cards before doing it.
Also the aftermarket cooler doesn't look difficult at all to do, as much as I want to spend $60 buying what is essentially the same cooler I bought with this card stock.
I also have had some reoccurring driver crashes, did a driver wipe and fresh install.  Seems to occur after sleep mode or when idle after a heavy load.  Not sure if its just NVidia drivers doing to sht or the card...ran a memory test on the VRAM and it was fine, and my PSU is a Corsair HX750 which is a good one.
So for anyone familiar what would be my best route here?  Do I roll the dice on a full RMA and hope I don't get a refurbished with issues and be without a card for possibly a month +?  Do I try the smart fan plug on my mobo?  Or should I just swap out the heatsink (I will say a say dead after 1.5 years doesn't instill confidence in this heatsink)

I'd RMA the card, no matter how long would it take. Because you can apply better TIM and you're done (doesn't void warranty as long as you don't damage any part, but contact MSI just to make sure), but other day another fan might just die on you and it might be just a day after warranty expires.
Im a bit confused, you suggest to just RMA the card, which tbh over one dead fan seems a bit excessive, regardless its an option.  But I don't know your reasoning.  "Because you can apply better TIM"  im not sure what TIM is.
Id really loathe losing my card for a month or more just over a dead fan, which is why im trying to think of alternatives here.  However I want this issue fixed by summer since its cold and my temps will most likely creep into danger zone once my room gets 10-15 degrees warmer.
