Symptoms of a Dead PSU

Hello, Can somebody please post symptoms that point
to a faulty PSU. Such as will any fans even turn on,
will there even be any mobo beeps, etc.I need this to
 figure out my comp's problem.
  Thanks

My PSU started to produce the "burning-plastic" smell when I put too many fans on the "Fan Only" wire. I overloaded the wire and the fams were running at half speed -or not at all.
Turns out the "FanOnly" Wires were meant to only have 1 Fan on them. The regular PSU connectors can transfer the full Wattage, so I would try chaining everything together from the regular wires - if your PSU differentiates that is.
I have an Antec 430WATT True-Power PSU.

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

  • PSU Dead?????

I think my PSU died.  Using the computer for just some emails when it just shutdown. No power, no lights, no nothing.
I tested with a voltmeter on one of the 12v fan plugs and it showed nothing. Is it a dead PSU or possibly the MB.
    Any answers appreciated
    Thanks Mel
PSU: Antec Neopower 480 (3 months old)
    MB:  MSI Neo Platinum 2
MEM: 2X512 Corsair dual channel 3200
    2 WD 120g HD's
    LG 4060 DVD Burner
    LG 8163 DVDROM
    MSI 6600gt vdt 128

    Sure sounds like its dead.
Get an Enermax, Tagan, Hiper or OCZ with at least 24 amps on the 12v rails.  Even higher provides you more insurance and peace of mind.
    Good luck.

  • PSU failing?

    Hi All
Just want to know if the symptoms I'm having could be a sign my PSU is failing...
After being away on holiday my G5 wouldn't start up. Had to 5-6 hard restarts. After that it would start up but screen would go black after an hour/a day/a couple of days and the hard-restart process had to be repeated.
I switched to a different power outlet, which seemed to help the hard-restart problem. However, the boot process seems dodgy now. It goes to the grey apple screen, jolts to black for 2-3 seconds and then jolts straight to the desktop image, bypassing the blue screen completely...
The whole process seems a bit jerky and faulty.
Any ideas? Could it be the PSU failing? I have checked the little battery, which is fine
    cheers
    -j-

    Hi-
You stated that the machine was unplugged for several days- I would consider the PRAM battery to be the most probable cause of your symptoms. A dead, or weak PRAM battery will cause all kinds of problems, with failure/difficulty starting to be one of them. You stated that you "checked" it, so it tests at 3.4-3.6v?
Replacing the little 3.6v battery would be a good thing to do.
The PRAM battery maintains the PRAM, or basic startup settings (amoung others) of the computer. Resetting the PMU returns the PRAM settings to factory default, but, a weak or dead battery will allow these settings to be lost again when power is disconnected from the machine.

  • G4-450 dual news from repair shop: firewire is dead, sounds right?

    Hi
I just had the this G4 touched up, new powersupply and battery.
Now the tech tells me my firewire bus is dead and my options are that i replace the logic board, or , that i install a firewire PCI card,
Can anyone recomend a firewire card for this machine, i feel sad, i paid 225 euroes in spain to have this thing fixed and the guy tells me that the logic board will cost about the same, i could of replaced it with a mac mini for the same price if i knew it was that bad ;( ,
So i guess i am left with getting a FW PCI card in this case, but which one?

I realize that power supplies can become defective, but at the risk of second-guessing the repair tech, why did he replace it? The symptoms of a dead PRAM battery can suggest a power supply problem. A PC repair shop might go with a hunch and replace it, whereas a reputable Apple repair shop would (hopefully) know enough to replace the battery first. Also, were you having problems with FireWire devices, prior to taking it in for service? Some shops try the piecemeal approach for repair estimates, wherein one or two repairs are recommended/performed, because they realize that giving you a longer list at the outset would likely discourage you from investing so much money in an old computer. Unless the shop also sells new computers, there's no incentive on their part to send your money elsewhere. If the technicians at the repair shop are competent and trustworthy, it may very well be a case of another underlying problem surfacing after the system is up and running. The FireWire PCI card is a cost-effective solution for a problematic onboard FireWire controller, as many B&W G3 owners have discovered. I've never had any problems with FireWire cards having the Texas Instruments chipset on it (various brands do).

  • Is W500 GPU dead?

    Hi all,
For a while I've been searching the internet for my GPU problem and need some help. About a month ago, I've purchased a used W500 which has a T9900 CPU (3.06Ghz, 6MB cache) and 4GB of ram. As mentioned on the web, w500s have Ati FireGL v5700 switchable graphics card but since I started to use this machine, I couldn't see the GPU on the device manager. I format the computer and installed win7 and all the listed drivers. Also do many things to switch the intel 45 GPU to ati but I can never succeed. As I select the discrete mode on BIOS, then the computer doesn't start at all. The only way to restart the computer was to reset BIOS. Is the ATI chip dead or is there a different setting or so to reactivate the ATI GPU? If it is dead, can it be fixed or I'm done with the ATI staff? If you would help me I really appriciate. Thanks

Unfortunately your describing the typical symptoms of a dead ATI, only possible fix is to get another motherboard.

  • Macbook Pro not turning on... dead?

Hi my macbook pro stopped working. It is not turning on.
    This is what happens:
I press the power button. I hear the cd drive start up. I let go the power button. Within less than a second, I hear the hard drive power down and my laptop does not go on. Nothing comes up on the screen, not even the gray startup screen.
If I try to hold it longer, it does the same thing.
The only different scenario is when I hold down the power button until it starts up and shuts down, which does not do anything either.
    Please help me.
I have done everything on this page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1365) except carry it to apple. I have even tried booting it from the restore DVD but nothing happened and it is now stuck in the laptop.

Well, this is all rather unsatisfactory. Yesterday I had a very polite and understanding member of the support-team on the phone, and after relaying the story and the symptoms of my dead MBP, and after checking with some superiours in the backgrond, he gave me a case-number and fixed me a date with the local apple store's genius bar, saying that the symptoms match what they have in their database regarding the graphic-chip failure and that my case will be dealt with at the genius bar - leaving me with the impression that the MBPs failure will be covered by the prolonged warranty.
so guess what? the genius at the bar did exactly the same what the AASP tech did on friday (traying to get a errorcode out of the dead machine), and he, too, stated that "if the book is that dead, it cannot be the graphic chip, sorry" - a statement that, in the words of the support-member "is not acceptable" - as long as it is not muttered by an official apple genius, it seems. He went to get a second opinion by a fellow genius who said, after looking at the data filed along with the case-number: "well, you're nearly three year's out of the warranty..." (which is wrong, I'm 614 days out of the warranty, which was the first thing I got told upon my second phone call with the service today) - so how dare I to complain about a premature death of a top-of-the-line product?!
Fuming. Not only do I have the dead MBP, but I had been sent on a fruitless journey by yesterday's support member.
I have always told everybody who would listen how reliable and stress-free apple's products are, and considering that this is the first really broken peace of hardware I encountered in the course of 17 years I will continue to do so, but this story is really really bad.

  • NVIDIA GEFORCE 8800GT in Mac Pro 08 machine

I recently posted a question about my Mac Pro's kernel panic issue on startup. After a call with AppleCare they determined it was a hardware issue. Since I no longer have AppleCare I took it to a local shop that is certified to work on Macs.
Their conclusion was that the video card went bad.
Now I know there is a recall/issue out on Macbook Pros with NVIDIA cards... however, it seems like there was never anything posted with Mac Pros. Obviously this being 3 years since I bought the machine warranties won't cover it. I've used my machine for art/design, so I was a little surprised when I wake up and I have no visual.
Is there a known issue or any coverage for this hardware defect?
I wanted to check her on the forums as none of my tech friends have worked on Macs, and the video cards for Macs are way more than the ones for PCs. As a last attempt I plan to bake the card in the oven, which a surprising number of users have had to do (all having their card for roughly the same time period and they just stop working).
Was 2008 just a bad year for NVIDIA?
Just seems odd that there is a known fix for this video card that multiple people have had to resort to, but there is no mention of NVIDIA acknowleding the issue. (Or maybe there is and I haven't stumbled across it on the web).
Any info is highly and greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

I've wondered the same thing myself about the issues with the nVidia chips from the '08 machines. I have a MacPro 3,1 that I got in late March '08 with the 8800GT. I had AppleCare and had several issues with my MacPro during those three years. The first problem I had was I started to get graphics corruption on the boot screen and regular kernal panics. Apple replaced the graphics card and everything seemed to be ok after that for a while. Then something happened where the computer would not power up at all. No lights, no fans, just completely dead. I suspected it was just a dead PSU however after seeing the repair reciept I was really supprised at what they needed to replace. Apple needed to replace both CPU's, the Memory, Logic Board, PSU, & Graphics Card. So it was esentially a completely new machine in an old case.
Now I'm having the same issue as before with the 8800GT having graphics corruption. I can't boot into OSX at all with out it crashing the system. I also get a BSOD when trying to load into Windows 7 via bootcamp. I remember Apple releasing an update to the 8800GT's EFI shortly after I got the MacPro when all the hoopla surrounding the mobile chips what going on. This patch seemed to slightly underclock (maybe undervolting) the GPU and increased the fan profile.
As it stands now I guess I'm just going to have to look for a replacement card. I think I'm going to switch to ATI/AMD at this point. I found the Sapphire makes a newer Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition, has a bit of a price premium for a year old card but it's definitely better than spending alsmost the same ammount on the Radeon HS 5870.

  • How to fix a problem with my book pro that has a gray screen with a folder with a question mark on it

does any one know how to fix a problem with my book pro that has a gray screen with a folder with a question mark on it?

Hello Mokhtary123 and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
It will help us diagnose your problem to know the exact model, size, year built, RAM installed and OS you're running.
    But basically your system can't find the boot disk. Usually this is a symptom of a dead/dying/corrupted hard drive;

  • Superdrive is no longer recognized

I just tried to pop in my brand spanking new Six Feet Under vol.2 soundtrack to rip to itunes....and the superdrive no longer grabs the cd, and when i checked out "about this mac" and looked under "disc burning", there is no longer any optical drive present. Also, when i press the eject button nothing happens on screen either. There is no cd stuck in the drive, and when i try and put a new cd in I can push it into the drive without any resistance at all, but I'd rather not get a cd stuck in there since its obviously not working. I tried restarting my computer to see if it was just a fluke, but it is still as if there is just no optical drive present. I purchased my iMac back in at the end of January and hope this is under warranty or something. Please help me out because this is the first mac problem i've ever really had, and love my system otherwise.

I have an update to my problem.
I recently got my computer to recognize the Superdrive. The steps I took to do so were:
-I opened up my computer to check the drive and connection cable to make sure there was no way a lack of connection.
    -Reset PMU
    -Reset PRAM
-Went into Open Firmware and used the commands (reset-nvram, set-defaults, reset-all)
Booted my computer and sure enough my computer now acknowledges the existence of the superdrive; HOWEVER, it still does not accept any discs. It does not accept them to even start spinning, as soon as the disc is pushed in the drive throws it out with a negative ****** tone.
Due to the new developments, is there any way to fix the problem?
Do these symptoms indicate a dead Superdrive?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Alex

  • Hard Disk problem- any suggestions?

Tonight I was using my powerbook and noticed some slowing down of normal file activity and had to force quit some applications after getting no response to enable a restart. The restart took forever and the HD semed to be making a "buzzing" noise, different to usual. The restart took a lot longer between the normal steps and after finally getting to the log in window and entering my password, it got to the end of the OSX loading window and no further. I loaded my OS Tiger install DVD and booted again with the "C" down and it eventually loaded. Opened Disk Utility and ran the Disk Repair option but noticed that my HD name had changed to "diskOs3" which didn't look good! Eventually the DU scan came to a halt with red text stating "Volume check failed. Error:the underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 HFS Volume checked. 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error."
I then tried to connect it to my Powermac G4 in Taget disk Mode but the Powerbook HD did not mount on the desktop, and trying DU from the Powermac also did not see the HD. I had a go using TechTool from the Powermac but no sign of the HD. I then spent a few hours reading through the Apple Powerbook discussions, downloaded and tried SupaDuper which could not see the Powerbook HD. I have a Silverkeeper backup of the drive a fortnight old so there is not much new stuff that I am worried about, as my complete iPhoto library is on an external USB drive now (ran out of room), so my question to the group is basically is there anything else I should try to revive the HD or do the symptoms declare its dead and I just fit a new bigger HD? I still have a few months to go with my 3 year Applecare cover so that may cover a replacement HD anyway.
    Thanks!

Thanks for your suggestions. The Applecare version of TechTool Deluxe I used did alert me to the fact that it needed to be upgraded before it would run under os 10.4.9. I was only able to run it from my Powermac (with Powerbook connected by firewire) as when i tried to create a new bootable CD with the updated TechTool I was told that not all the contents of the Applecare CD could be copied due to some files having special permissions. I downloaded Prosoft's Data Rescue II as suggested and ran it on my Powermac after connecting the Powerbook using firewire target disk mode. The Powerbok HD did not mount on the desktop and Data Rescue II seemed unable to find and mount it in expert mode, so it would seem to confirm that the HD has truly DIED and there may well be no purpose in trying to resusitate it. It must be the season for HD failures - my Powermac HD died only two weeks ago, a day after having updated my backup!

  • Power Mac G3 and Monitor

I turned on my 11 year old G3 and the drive is spinning and it sounds great. However the monitor is illuminated with no desktop. There is no image on the monitor but is illuminated. Does anyone know what is wrong? How can I get back the desktop? I need to access some files on this machine. I don't use this machine anymore since I have my eMac.

Remove the top cover by depressing the two release buttons (one on each side) located under the overhanging edge, and then slide the cover forward a couple of inches and lift it up and off. With the power cord unplugged from the back, you can unlock and tilt open the drive bay sub-chassis by sliding the tabs on the latches (front and rear) toward the center of the computer. Grasp the metal tab and lift up the drive bay chassis, flipping it up and over to the right. Make sure that the beige plastic support flips out to keep it upright and from tipping to far to the right. Reconnect the power cord to the power supply to convey ground to the chassis. The hard drive is installed on the floor of the chassis, in front of the motherboard. Disconnect the power and data cables by grasping the power connector and then the ribbon cable label/pull. The hard drive is mounted to a plastic sled which slides into a pair of rails mounted to the chassis floor. On the left side, you'll see a tab in the center of the sled. Lift up on it and slide the drive to the left about an inch, and then lift it straight up and out of the computer. Turn it upside down and remove the sled from the hard drive. Assuming that your friend's G4 computer is a mini-tower (not a laptop), the plastic drive sled can be attached to its hard drive with the same orientation (drive connections on opposite end from the sled's release tab). The G4's hard drive can be installed in the beige G3, but if it has an OS X software build on it, there will be compatibility issues. In this is the case, the OS should be reinstalled on the drive, but OS 10.3.x (Panther) and OS 10.4.x (Tiger) can't run on a beige G3 without the intervention of the downloadable utility "XPostFacto." Additionally, the installation will need the retail/universal installer disk and not another Mac's restore disk. There are other quirks associated with installing OS X on a beige G3, so post back (start a new Topic) for details.
Additionally, going from a G4 (especially a fast one) to a beige G3 will be a disappointment in terms of performance. You or your friend should post a topic in the G4 Expansion Forum, describing the symptoms of her "dead" G4. Sometimes, replacing a dead PRAM battery can revive an otherwise unresponsive computer.

  • TimeCapsule - trying to access old data from new mac

I just got a new MBP after my previous one got severely corrupted and became un-recoverable.
I migrated all my data over from the Time Capsule, but immediately after the new MBP started showing the same symptoms as the dead one. Apple tech suggest wipe and clean re-installing Mavericks.  I did and it works fine.
I have spent all day reloading software and some data from other discs, but there is some stuff that is only on the Time Capsule now. Problem is - i cannot find it on the Time Capsule.
When i try connecting to TC it lists a SparsediskImage named to match the new computer not the old one, even though the created date is for the old mac.  It has 941gb of data, yet it wont let me look any further back than today.
Is there any way to access the data that is in TC and just rescue those few useful files?

You should never use Mavericks Time Machine over an old backup.
Mount the sparsebundle in Finder and you can manually open it to an earlier date and extract info from it.

  • Mac book pro surge

Hi Gang. My macbook pro yesterday die after I tried  to connect my iPhone via defective usb cable. I believe cable was shorted and just zap my MBP.
    its mid 2013model  MBP 13" 2.5MHz , MD101/A .
Symptoms are just dead, does not respond to power key, nor light come on charger connector ( green or yellow ) . Hard drive is in good condition. pull 'em out and  it works as startup disk on my wives comp, data is all right.
Is it any trick I should perform before go and buy new one. I believe is mother board or power supply unit if exist as separate part.
    Best,
    Dan.

If it is dead then about your only alternative is to make an appointment with your local Apple Store for them to look at. After they examine it, they will give you an estimate to repair. Once you know that then you can decide if you want to repair or replace it.
