Purpose of Presentation Variable and in what ways it is used?

Thanks a lot for ur time.

Presentation Variable (PV) is for the web layer to store a particular value at run time and use it in the calculations. At any point in time,
10g - variable holds only one values.
11g - Variable holds an array of variables
You can use PV in prompts, filters, fx

  • Server and Presentation Variables and Displaying in Dashboard Report

Hello I am running into dead ends trying to get what seems a simple request implemented. The user would like to be prompted for a Date range and have the dates they select displayed in the Title of the report, they also would like the default data set returned be the prior month (so not all data is returned when they initially run the Dashboard)
I have a Dashboard prompt where the user is prompted for a Date Range (Date column). My first issue was being able to display the Date range in the title. I used the below post from Venkash
    http://oraclebizint.wordpress.com/2008/02/26/oracle-bi-ee-101332-between-prompts-for-date-columns-using-presentation-variables/
I set the Case statements in the Dashboard prompt to equal then passed them to a Presentation variable. I then used these to be displayed in the Title of my Answers report.
The issue now is automating prior month, I was informed I would have to set up a Repository Variables to initialize two columns - one bringing in Prior Month First Day and one bringing in Prior Month Last Day. I then set these as the defaults in the Dashboard Prompt.
This works, however, my problem now is when the values are displayed in the report initially, they have the value of TimeStamp '01-01-2008 00:00:00'. When I put in values in the Dashboard Prompt and hit go the values are replaced correctly with whatever I put in - 1/1/2008.
I assume the TimeStamp shows because of the initialization I am doing in the repository, I don't see any way of changing this so it reflects just the date, I am using the sysdate in the formula on the repository - I tried converting to_char first setting the format then converting back to Date. But still no luck.
Has anyone else encountered this? Or am I even going about it the wrong way? Sorry for the long post, I look forward to any input, thanks!!!

No it errors out when I try to Cast the server variable as a Date in the Dashboard Prompt interface.
The variable I created in the repository (Server/Dynamic) has the formula:
    SELECT Add_Months(TO_DATE((to_char(sysdate,'mm')) || '/' || '01/' || to_char(sysdate,'YYYY'),'MM/DD/YYYY'),-5) from dual
This is set up with an Initialization block that when I first run the report it displays in the title
    TIMESTAMP '2007-10-01 00:00:00'
This will display no matter what I change the Initialization block to (01, ab, etc) so I guess it is something from the formula.
Now when a user does enter a value into the prompt box and hits GO the title changes to reflect a date and looks great (10/1/2007), but I guess this is because it is now passing the database column value to this presentation variable.
I assume this all revolves around the formula I am creating in the repository to return a default of 10/1/2007 so it can be displayed in the report header like that and not with the TimeStamp format above.
I appreciate all your input, thanks again!

  • I want to accumulate rain for the day, month and year; What formula can I use?

I want to accumulate rain for the day, month and year; What formula or expression can I use.
I am using a Rain Wise product that converts pulses to an analog value.  The Rain Wise device can be
set to measure up to 1", 5", or 10".  I will be setting the unit to 10 inches in increments of 0.01 inches.
What I would like to do is everytime the signal increments I would like to count it as 0.01 then after reaching
a period of time whether it be a day or a month reset back to zero.
Need some advise on this problem.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello Ryan,
Lookout gets a Modbus over Ethernet signal which originates as a 4-20mA input to a Moxa Ethernet I/O Module (E1240) in the field.  In Lookout I created a ModbusEthernet Driver and a tag which scales 0 - 65534 RAW to 0-10 Eng.  [0 - 10 is inches of rain]  Also, another piece of information is that after the rain gauge maxes out at 10 inches it will zero out and start over.
I though the accumulator was time based and took a sample over a specific time period, for instance, one sample every 30 seconds then accumulate.  If this is so then if I have 5 inches of rain and then it stopped raining, then 30 seconds latter it would sample, it would see 5 inches and add that to be 10 inches when actually it had only rained 5 inches.
I really need some help with this process,

  • What is Functional area concept in SAP, What way it is useful.

Any body explain the concept of Functional area, in which way it is useful .  give 2/3 examples how to use.

    Hi,
Functional areas are used to analyse Cost of Sales Accounting. By this you can analyse your organization's expenses by your funtional area like Finance, Marketing, Production, HR and so. If you want to default functional areas in to document then GL master has field of functional area where you can map it.
Steps for Cost of Sales Accounting.
    1. Crete functional areas - OKBD
    2. Create substitution for cost of sales accounting with call up point 5 - GGB1
    3. Activate cost of sales accounting under SPRO>Financial Accounting>Financial Accounting Global Settings>Company Code>Cost of Sales Accounting>Activate Cost of Sales Accounting for Preparation

  • I need to purchase a new laptop and wondered what was recommended when using lightroom?

Ehich laptop is most compatible with Lightroom?

Also, if you are planning to also use the laptop to edit your photos, you want to go with a 17" screen. I have a small 15" ASUS laptop with an Intel I5 CPU and 6GB of RAM. Lightroom runs fine on that but I only use it to offload images from my CF card and use Lightroom or Elements to verify the download was successful by checking the RAW images in a RAW viewer so I have no need for a lot of power. However, the small screen is not suitable for serious editing.
I also have a Macbook Pro 17" which I also use. I have a small working catalog on that machine. I used to use it for traveling but, being considerably larger and heavier than the ASUS, I don't take it on the road anymore. The screen was large enough that I could view 1:1 previews and still see nearly the entire image on the screen which made it suitable to make changes and judge quality but I still wait to to do the serous edits (like using Photoshop) when i get home where I can export/import my working catalog to my Mac Pro with the big monitor.
The 17" screen on the Macbook makes serious editing possible and there is enough power and memory to run both Lightroom and Photoshop. If the laptop is going to be your primary darkroom, go with a 17" screen with a fast processor (Intel I5 or better, I7) and at least 8GB of RAM (Photoshop really loves RAM). One other thing I will mention is that I worked in IT for a very large bank where we had thousands of laptops deployed from a number of different manufacturers. The Lenovo laptops had the least problems over all with a much lower percentage of them having to be returned/repaired. I personally had good luck with the Dell laptops and have owned them personally as well but many of my coworkers did not fair so well.

  • Numeric and Presentation variable

    Experts,
Do number columns work with Presentation Variables?
I want to filter my report based on the Age..I am using a PV for that.
    parag

    Yes.
In your case you can set number or character type as input to a presentation variable and reference it in the filter.
If you write manually filter write @{var} or '@{var}', or you can filter with presentation variable in the column properties.

  • Passing Presentation Variables to Guided Navigation

I'm having trouble passing Presentation Variables (and Session Variables) to analyses called via a Guided Navigation link in 11.1.1.5.
    1. Created a dashboard prompt to select from a list of months. The prompt populates a Presentation Variable called pMo.
    2. Created an analysis that displays two columns: Month and '{pMo}'
    3. That analysis has this filter: Month is equal to / is in {pMo}
    4. Put the dashboard prompt and the analysis onto a dashboard page.
    5. Put an Action Link onto the dashboard page, calling that same analysis in a new window.
    6. View the dashboard page
    7. Initial analysis displays an error, which is expected since pMo has no value.
    8. Select a month, which populates pMo. Analysis displays properly. Month and pMo both show correctly.
    9. Click the Action Link.
    10. The new window shows the correct value of Month, but NOTHING in the pMo column.
This is not logical. If the correct value of Month is shown in the new window, that means that Month MUST have been filtered using pMo. But the pMo column shows blank.
I see the exact same behavior with Session Variables. The value of the variable is correctly used to filter the analysis, but that variable's value doesn't show up in the analysis column.
In fact, if I assign a default value for the variable, the Month column shows the "correct" (i.e. selected) value, but the column containing the formula for the variable shows the variable's default value, not the value that was obviously used by the filter.
The problem only occurs in the new window that appears with the Guided Navigation link. The original dashbord page shows correctly.
Here's the error when using a Session variable. Similar error when using Presentation variable.
    Error getting drill information: SELECT "Channels"."Total Channel" saw_0, "Times"."Month" saw_1, VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION.Mo) saw_2 FROM "Retrospectives" WHERE "Times"."Month" = 'Mar-2005'

So, if NQ_SESSION.Mo has no value, how did the Filter know that Mar-2005 should be used? NQ_SESSION.Mo DOES have a value. Why won't the column display it?
By the way, in case you're wondering 'what's the big deal', it's this: I want to be able to type a Commission Percent into a text box, store it in a variable, and then use that variable in a calculation within a Guided Nav link. That's what I was originally testing. The description above is what I finally figured out is happening. The variable has a value that can be used as a filter condition, but that value is ignored when used in the columns of that filtered analysis.

Edited by: Mark T. on Jan 7, 2012 7:15 AMI don't have 11g so what I say may not apply to you at all. That being said, it appears that what you are describing is similar to how the Link or Image and Guided Nav. objects work in 10g. Bear with me for a sescond while I explain. In the Link or Image object, you can open a destination report in a new window, but PVs don't pass through. In the Guid. Nav. object, PVs pass through to the destination, but you don't have the option to open the report in a new window. The filtering works, which is why your destination report is properly filtered; it's just that the PV is not passed and therefor the pMo column is blank.
Since you said your destination report opens in a new window, it is acting like the Link or Image object in 10g. So try doing this:
    1) Ensure that your dashboard prompt is set to "dashboard" scope. This being that the PVs with the same name will be set for all dashboard pages, once set in the parent page.
    2) Create a new dashboard page and include the same prompt as in the parent page, and your destination report. Hide the prompt on this page.
    3) Now in your Action Link of the parent report, instead of pointing to the report itself, point it to the dashboard page created in step 2).
My theory is this: With the dashboard prompt set to dashboard scope, the PV of the prompt in the destination page will be set as soon as you hit the "Go" button. This will allow the report in the destination page to be set by the same variable, even though the value is not passed on directly through the Action Link.

  • How can i display the presentation variable in my reports

Was facing a problem to display the Presentation variable on my report, however i managed to display it on answers, but when i try to display it on my Publisher report it doesnt shows any data.
I use to Select the Values From my prompt, and it shows the Reflection of Presentation Variable on my Answers Report. but i cannot see the Reflection of data on my Publisher Report Please any One Can help me with this.

Removing '' does not work it given the following error
    "State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 27002] Near <@>: Syntax error [nQSError: 26012] . (HY000)"
and by adding space you mean that I use it as '@{ BbranchCode}'?
What I am doing at the moment is
    1. Write the given query in oracle BI Answers.
    2. Made a dashboard prompt in Answers.
    3. Made a report in dashboard using the Answers report and the dashboard prompt.
Up till this step it works perfectly fine and the data displayed in manipulated on the basis of the values selected in the prompt.
    4. Now what I want is to display this report in Dashboards using oracle BI publisher. For that I use the template builder provided for microsoft word.
    5. I login to that add-on, open the answers report where I can see the field in the rowset. I select that field and save the template.
    6. I open the oracle BI publisher and make a new reprt with data model of the answer's report and Layout of the one I just created.
    7. I open the dashboard and put in the BI publisher report in the same page in which the asnwers report and the prompt was.
    8. Upon changing the values of the prompt the report in the answers is still getting manipulated but I am not able to see its reflection of the BI publisher report.
The thing is that I am currently using this presentation variable to manipulate my reports in dashbords using dashboard prompts. The report is built in oracle BI Answers and it is working perfectly fine with it. Now when I use the template builder for Microsoft Word and open the template with the answers's report of this query I see the field in the row set but when I display the template in the dason the bases of this presentation variable the report in the oracle BI Answers is getting updated when I change values but when I use the template builder for microsoft word the the field is being shown in the row set.

  • How to set a value to a Presentation Variable using GO URL?

    Hi All,
I am working on a drill (GO URL) from Dashboard page1 to Dashboard page2.
The problem I am facing is, I am not able to pass a value to the presentation variable through GO URL. (I have to pass "Customer Category" static
value to The presentation variable present in Dashboard Page2 ).
The Dashboard page2 is having a view select in which we are using presentation variable to select the report based on the value selected in
    View Select.
For example: If the user selects "Customer Category" value in View select and clicks on GO button Customer Category report will show the out put.
When i am drilling from Dashboard Page1 I have to pass a value to the presentation variable used in view select and also pass some filter condition in
         GO URL.
Please let me know if it is feasible to pass a value to the presentation variable through GO URL in OBIEE 10.1.3.4.
It will be greate if you can provide me with the syntax to set a value to the presentation variable of dashboard page2 through GO URL.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Sagar Vishwanathwar.

    1) You have to navigate to dashboard page, not to answer request = you have to use "Dashboard URL API" not GO URL API.
    2) On the target page, you have to place dashboard prompt, which sets required presentation variable.
    3) Refer to the target using Dashboard URL API and set filter on prompt column using URL parameters. Example: http://localhost:9704/analytics/saw.dll?Dashboard&PortalPath=%2Fusers%2Fadministrator%2F_portal&Page=page%201&Action=Navigate&P0=1&P1=eq&P2=D_TIME.YEAR_CODE&P3=%221996%22
Do not forget to use Action=Navigate. The syntax for setting filters using url parameter is the same as for GO URL API described in Business Intelligence Presentation Services Administration Guide.
This is the way, you can implement navigation to parametrized direct SQL reports including passing filter values...

  • Presentation Variable Date Format

Hi all trying to format a presentation variable in a Narrative view , Is there a way that this can be done using javascript or html that i can paste into narrative view.
i want something like "the date being used is @{indate} for month end"
Also date format needs to be dd.mm.yyyy ... its currenty being displayed as yyyy/mm/dd .. I dont want to add the columns in my report and hide them as there seems to be a performance lag when i do that.
Any ideas .. Java gurus out there.
I have tried @{indate}[dd.mm.yyyy] .. but that dont work.

    Here you go...
I tried in my machine and its working great..
In Answers--> in Criteria TAB, In the column's fx use below formula...
case when 1=1 then EVALUATE('TO_CHAR(%1,%2)' as varchar(20),date '@{pv_date}{1998-07-05}','dd.mm.yyyy') else "ORE Time Dim"."Mnth Name" end
pv_date is the presentation variable and
For "ORE Time Dim"."Mnth Name" use any varchar datatype column...
    Hope it helpful...

  • Using presentation variables selected in dashboard prompt in query builder

In dashboard prompt I have made four dropdowns(have four presentation variables) and based on these values selected, can the Query Builder generate dynamic reports based on the presentation variables selected?
I will provide the link(i.e Link of BI publisher where I stored the report) displayed to the user based on Four presentation variables.
If we click on that link can we use the presentation variables in where clause of Query Builder in BI Publisher?
    Please help me out
    Thanks in Advance

    - OK. In the second prompt, instead of setting Default to SQL Results, set it to Specific Value.
    - Then insert '{pres_var}' in the window. I got it to work this way.
    - It supplied the PV as the default in the second prompt after hitting "Go" on the first prompt.
Hi, thanks for your suggestion but I don't need to have the value of the presentation variable itself as the prompt default. The variable is a filter for a specific SQL clause and the default is the result of this SQL.
