PXI-8106 shuts down shortly after boot, the power light is flashing.

How can I tell if this is a board power supply problem in the NI PXI 8106 or a PXI crate problem?   The time between shut downs decreases to the point where it will not boot at all.

Hi dlknies-
Take a look at the PXI-8106 User Manual on page 3-14.  It says that a blinking Power LED indicates that one of the PXI or onboard supplies is operating outside of the normal limits or is not functioning.  You can attempt the repair yourself or you can have it sent back to National Instruments for an RMA.
I hope this helps.  Best of luck to you!

  • PPC MacMini shuts down immediately after boot, LED blinks

A client gave me his PowerPC MacMini which boots up but then shuts down after a few seconds. Unfortunately, there's not enough time to open the system preferences between booting and automatic shutdown.
I've tried to boot the computer from a system DVD and with "T" pressed for target mode, but it always boots up completely from the internal drive. Booting with "Shift" pressed boots in safe mode, but the machine still shuts down after a few seconds.
Interestingly, the power LED blinks about once per second. I wasn't able to find anything about this on the Net.

    AndyO wrote:
If, on the other hand, the mini is starting up, and then failing, and the light isn't so much blinking as pulsing, then the system may be suffering protective shutdown as a result of overheating. That can be tested by seeing whether it runs longer after being left unplugged for several hours, thus being cold, than it does if it's been running (or attempted to be run) for some time, and is thus already warmed. In that event, the mini will need to be disassembled to some extent to try and identify whether the fan is running, the CPU heat-sink is firmly attached and the thermal pad which is squeezed between the underside of the logic board and the base of the system is replaced.
I have a Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo that is suffering almost the same symptoms (shut-down almost immediately after startup); however, it DOES appear to be for a variable length of time based upon how much time I let it sit and 'cool' down; therefore, I believe I'm experiencing an over-heating issue.
I've installed a matching 1GB pair of RAM about 1.5 months ago and all has been fine until now. The unexpected (which is now expected) shutdown after startup is occurring on both Mac OS X 10.5.2 and Windows Vista (on Boot Camp partition) ... of particular note ... the Windows side shuts down more quickly (likely due to it not having the same system monitoring/energy handling tools that would be available to the Mac OS X side ... so I would suspect it to over-heat sooner on the Windows side).
Successfully completed Hardware tests (simple & extended) reported memory and other system hardware was fine. 'Check/Verify Disk' on Mac/Windows side reported no issues with either partitions.
Attempts to reset the PRAM and SMC have not solved the problem.
There was one instance, after startup, that the fan ran at full speed continuously and noticed that the power light was not on at all ... at the time, I was on the Mac startup disk and it stayed up and running for about 20 minutes or more until I decided to shutdown and test the Windows side. Upon restart, the fan did not run continuously, and the Windows side shut-down shortly after start up.
Overall, I'm fairly convinced it is an over-heating problem. If anyone has any ideas or reference material to confirm or how-to-do "the CPU heat-sink is firmly attached and the thermal pad which is squeezed between the underside of the logic board and the base of the system is replaced" that would be greatly appreciated.
I am not ruling out sending the machine into the retailer for servicing/diagnostics; however, if there's a relative quick fix so that I don't have to identify and remove confidential/sensitive info first, that would be preferred.
    Thanks.

Mail application keeps shutting down short after start up - resulting in an error message. how can I repair what is wrong without losing my mail history?

Will I lose my emails I have on there? I have numerous client email files and can't afford to lose any of them. I do have everything backed up but I'm fearful of losing important client info. What if something happened during the back up and it doesn't have my files?

  • Auto shuts down - could it be the power adapter?

I'm having problems with my first generation macbook lately, it will auto shuts down (not sleep) with the power adapter still attached. And when it shuts down, the adapter still light up green. Im working without the battery, it is removed all the time cos it is dead already.
Could the problem lies with the power adapter? but it's still shows green light, that means there is still power running thru? I would like to test with another power adapter but i don have friends who have a mac. I don't want to spend money one another power adapter, without knowing the cause.
Is it possible to do a test on the power adpater? thanks!

A test you could try (rather than another adapter) is to put the "dead" battery back in and run it on AC. As Gregory said, without the battery, the slightest knock to the magsafe connecter may cause it to disconnect, even momentarily, thus you lose all power and your MB turns off. Hopefully the battery will have enough capacity to allow the MB to stay on (briefly) when the connecter is disconnected for that moment. Just an idea.
    Good luck.

  • Notebook shuts down shortly after start-up!

I have a slight puzzle on my hands. I was working on a DV5-1012EA which had a damaged palm rest/touchpad. I found a replacement and fitted it fine. I had the notebook running fine and decided to run windows update. It all seemed fine but after a restart (which seemed normal after a windows update) it then decided to shut down. I tried a few restarts but no joy.
I then used a recovery disk but it was halfway through the second "loading files" and it shut down.
I ran the system diagnosis test via ESC menu and the memory tested fine, it shutdown half way through the HDD test.
I tried to boot a Linux live disk with no HDD but once again it failed.
I booted into the BIOS but after 3 mins it shutdown again
I have tried separate HDDs and memory but it makes no difference. The system just shuts down.
Could it be a coincidence this occurred after the Windows Update? I have changed the hardware so any conflict caused by the update would not be there.
I can only think it is overheating the CPU and/or GPU and hence it shuts down? Perhaps all the work of dismantling the until to replace the touchpad/palmrest dislodged the heat sink/thermal paste?
Please can someone advise me because I want to get this thing running again and back to my friend?
    Thanks in advance

If you boot into the BIOS and let it sit there (don't run diagnostics) does it still shut down?
If so, I would assume it's overheating or there's some other circuitry problem.

  • MSI GT70 2PC shut down shortly after start

I bought MSI GT70 2PC-1889CZ Dominator. BIOS E1763IMS.51B, the same problem with BIOS E1763IMS.51V. There is one SSD disk there and one HDD.
And problem? When I press the power button, my NB automatically turns off during 2-3 sec (before starting windows 8). But when I press the power button again, it starts without problem. I have the same problem everytime. First try - turn off, second try - no problem. My nb never turns off during playing games, or working in windows, only shortly after I press power button. I tried other battery (the same model), this problem occurs without plugged charger and with plugged charger too...

    Try update IRST driver.

  • Satellite L305D-S5934 - After shutdown the power light is still on

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5934 two weeks ago.
Here lately, I can't seem to fully shut it down. I select shut down from the start menu. It appears to shut down (the screen goes black) but the power light is still on and I can hear it making noises inside like it's still running.
    I'm running Windows Vista.

    Hi
Does this issue appear always? I mean is this a permanent status that your notebook cannot power up correctly? Or does it happen only sometimes?
From my knowledge the Vista the default action for the Power button in the Start Menu in is Sleep. So your notebook would not power up but would go into the sleep mode.
You can change this like described here:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/change-the-windows-vista-power-buttons-to-shut-down/
Furthermore you should check if your BIOS is up to date.
Choose your notebook model (it seems like a US series) and download the compatible BIOS.
    Check it!

  • MAC PRO won't boot up power light constantly flashes

So here is the situation. I left for vacation a week ago my mac pro was turned off and plugged into a UPS. When I came back and tried to power on the computer it turns on but there is no "Chime" but the power light does come on like normal (at first) and then just blinks constantly. The monitor stays completely black.
Here is what an apple tech had me do:
Unplug all devices and try powering on with the plug in a wall socket. Unplugging everything from the computer for 15 seconds (SMC reboot?)
No luck. He wants me to take it to a store... I hate taking my computer to a store and handing it over for an unspecified amount of time...
Could opening up the comp and manually resetting the SMC or clearing the PRAM work? I asked the tech what more someone at a store could do and he said they would just test the voltage. Do you need a special tool for that because I have a volt meter and I would much rather not take it to a store. If it is the power supply I would rather they send it to me to install.
    Jeremiah

I wasn't aware PRAM batteries did any charging
Apple has used rechargeable batteries for volatile storage for some time.
and just 'held' information in NVRAM and PRAM when needed and there was no power coming in
I can't see data held in NVRAM/PRAM doing something like keeping time without some power. One can't assume a permanent Internet connection to update it when the system is turned on now can we?
I assume it is on a 1000VA UPS that has good battery and fully charged too, and didn't discharge during the vacation
If the UPS was turned off it's as good as being totally unplugged so it may well have still been at 100% upon return. There's no power delivery when the UPS is off remember.

  • E3000 was unplugged, now when plugged back in, the power light just flashes....HELP!!!

My wi-fi signal in the house was showing an excellent reading, but it wouldnt connect to the internet on any of our devices. We unplugged everything, and then when everything was put back together, the routers power light just flashes, and wont even show an internet connection to the computer. I had to unplug the ethernet cord from the back off the router and plug it into my computer just to get online....what should I be doing?

The power light on your router is flashing. Try to reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and wait for 1 minute. if the power light on the router is solid then try to reconfigure the router.
If the power light is still blinking then try 30/30/30 reset on the router.

  • TS1702 My iPod apps, even the apps provided by apple are shutting down randomly. I can access them but they shut down shortly after I do so. What's wrong and how can I fix it?

My iPod fourth genereation is closing apps down randomly shortly after I open them. Even the apps that were provided by apple won't stay open long. I've tried everything they've suggested and nothing has worked. What's wrong with my iPod and how can I fix it? I even reset the entire thing to factory settings and it did nothing.
Also, my back camera won't work most of the time and when it does red scratchy lines appear all over the screen and the picture won't come out clear.

I think I fixed the apps, though.
*Turn off your wifi and only turn it on when you want to use it
    *Lower your brightness
*Turn off "Push" on notifications and mail and turn on "Manual"
*Return to your home screen and then double click twice and tap and hold one of the apps you've previously opened, when they jiggle tap the red on each app until fully erased.
*Don't use your ipod while it is charging, allow at least a 10 minute charge (fully charged) before using it again.
See if this helps(: ... I still have no answer bout the camera issue. I might be going to apple soon so we will see then.

  • My iDVD Themes wont load and the program shuts down shortly after I choose a selection.

It's acting like it doesnt know where to look for the themes but I have deleted everything and tried to reinstall three times and it still doesnt work. It's from iLife 09. iMovie works just find but again when I try to burn to iDVD it looks for themes and shuts down.

Have you run Disk Utility to repair disk permissons after installing?  Check in the Library/Application Support folder to see if there's an iDVD folder with a Themes folder inside.  If not check in the ~/Library/Application Support folder.
When you find them open iDVD, go to it's Advnaced preference pane and point iDVD to the location of the themes folder.

  • Idvd shuts down shortly after opening

I am trying to make a dvd of a 5 minute movie I created in iMovie and sent to the media browser.  I open iDvd, name the project and the iDvd window opens and begins to play.  After about 10-15 seconds it shuts down and I have no idea why.  I made a Dvd about a month ago with no problem at all.  Any ideas?

    Hello Dude420,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like the iDvd app quits unexpectedly. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
