PXI chassis hot-plugging with remote controller

Hello,
I am using the PXIe-PCIe8371 remote controller with PXIe-8370 to control instruments in the PXIe-1075 chassis in Vista. In order to see my instruments in MAX the chassis must be turned on when I reboot Windows. If I turn off the chassis while Windows is running, I have to reboot to be able to use the instruments again.
Is it possible to make MAX see the chassis if it wasn't running when Windows booted up or was turned off while Windows was running?
Thanks!

Hi,
You can disable and enable the PCI to PCI bridge in Device Manager, but this is not recommended nor supported. I'd also suggest that you don't turn off the chassis while Windows is running, which is essentially the same as removing a PCI card from your PC while the PC is on. This can lead to issues with your system such as MAX Database Corruption, which isn't very fun to resolve. The recommended way to boot your system is always chassis first, then PC, and to shut down it's PC first, then chassis.

  • Computing Requirements in Multiple PXI Chassis System

I have acquired a two PXI Chassis system, each with their own embedded controller (PXIe-8108 and PXIe-8130).  I would like to control all instruments (simultaneously) in both chassis from a central location (either a laptop or one of the embedded controllers).  What is the best configuration for this and will using one controller have enough power to drive two fully populated PXIe-1065 chassis?
(I am aware of the different configurations for control (MXI, etc.) and am more concerned with instrument performance, data buffers become full quickly etc., in using one PC controller)
    THANKS!

    Hi JMU_ISAT,
The PXIe-1065 chassis uses a four link configuration where there is an x4 link going to slots 7, one to slot 8, another to slots 9-14.  There are also an x1 link converted to PXI that goes to slots 2-7 and another x1 link converted to PXI that goes to slots 11-13 and 15-18.  Each x4 link gives 1 GB/s of bandwidth and each x1 link converted to PXI will provide 125 MB/s of bandwidth.  These bandwidths are theoretical maximums where overhead and chip design reduces the bandwidth somewhat.
The PXI-8130 has four x4 links with the four link configuration so it will be able to get the full chassis bandwidth.  The PXIe-8108 has four x1 links which will limit the bandwidth to 250 MB/s for slot 7, slot 8, and slot 9-14.
To synchronize the measurements across both chassis you will need a timing and synchronization module such as the PXIe-6672 in the timing slot of each chassis.  This will allow you to route the clock of one timing module to the other and then use that clock to override the backplane reference clock of each chassis.  Now each module can use the 10 MHz reference clock to synchronize to each other.
In order to control both chassis from one controller, you can run windows on one controller and LabVIEW RealTime on the other controller allowing you to distribute code from the windows controller to the LabVIEW RealTime controller.  The other method would be to run a MXI connection from one chassis to the other to daisy chain the chassis.  Since the most you can get out of a single slot of the PXIe-1065 is an x4 link, this would limit the total bandwidth of the daisy chained chassis to 1 GB/s theoretical maximum.
I hope this information is helpful!

  • How do you configure multiple PXIe chassis to share Tclk synch with the 6672 timing module?

    Hi,
I have two PXIe chassis, each with a number of digitizers (configured through NI-SCOPE). Each chassis has a PXIe 6672 timing module. I have downloaded the sample VI from:
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/5254
which deals with PXI chassis. My question is this: in the VIs at the above link (and in fact all VIs I've seen for using the 6672 for sharing triggers), the VI needs access to the resource identifiers for both Master and Slave timing modules, how do I access the (remote) slave resource identifier from the master chassis? I feel like I'm missing something obvious, but can I do this using just an ethernet connection, or do I need another module to enable the master chassis to view the devices on the slave chassis in MAX?
Thanks for any help you can provide,
    Cillian

Those example VIs are written to be used when a single host PC is controlling multiple chassis so there is just one computer running the program.  Since both of your chassis have their own controllers it will be necessary to run a program on each (one as master, the other as slave).  You can modify the code from that example to create and Master and Slave VIs.  For the Master you will call the VIs as specified in case 0 of the example; for the Slave you will call the VIs as specified in the default, 1 case of the example.
You will also want to send a signal from the Master to the Slave to let the Slave know that the clock is being generated.  You could use TCP/IP or a PFI line to do this.  The basic order of events should be as follows:
    1. VI runs on Slave to configure it to accept a clock.
    2. VI runs on Master to begin outputing the clock.
    3. Master sends a signal to Slave to let it know that the clock is being generated.
    4. Continue with the rest of your program.
Let me know if you have any questions about this.

  • PXIe 8262 streaming performance with HDD 8264 on a PXIe 1062Q chassis

    Hello,
I have a PXIe 1062Q chassis, running Win XP, with one 8262 connected to an HD8264 and two PXIe 6537 installed, all the three board being on the express slots (3, 4 and 5). Running the benchmark application for testing the streaming speed (Win32FileIO) I get something like 100 MB/s with data chunks of about 4 MB, and around 140 MB/s with chunk of 64 M. How can improve these results toward the theoretical limit off 600 MB/s? Is there any software/driver trick to be applied?
And, in case, which is the best way to exploit the 8262 from C++ written code (using the NI libraries)? Is there anything similar to the Win32FileIO library? I tried using the RAID system from a c++ test program, and the performance seems very poor, while I would need, if not the 600 MB/s rate, at least something around 200 MB/s of continuous streaming.
    Thanks in advance,
    Piero.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Neil,
I actually have a 8130 controller, and in fact that was not the problem: I found the problem being the file-caching performed by Windows file system. If you use standard fstream calls from C source code you cannot bypass it, but by using Windows native call (CreateFile(...), WriteFile(...) APIs) and setting the flag for no data caching or buffering inside the call, I managed to get the full bandwith of 600 MBytes/s.
Anyway thanks for the quick reply!
    Piero
I'm guessing you have a controller that only
supports x1 PCI Express.  The PXIe-8130 is our highest-bandwidth
controller, with four x4 links going to the chassis.  In the case of
the 1062, each of slots 3, 4 and 5 get a dedicated link from the
controller.  x1 links max out at about 200 MB/s and x4 links max out at
    800 MB/s.
So your first step is to use an embedded
controller or use MXI Express x4 instead of x1 back to a host
computer.  While the PXIe-8130 is the best for high-bandwidth data
transfers, the PXIe-8106 should also be sufficient for your needs.
    If
you want to stream data to disk from a PXIe-6537, it is already built
into DAQmx.  You simply specify a file name, and the data goes to
disk.  If you want to stream *from* disk, you'll have to do that on
your own.  Here is a C/CVI example for streaming digitizers to disk
using a C API and the Windows File I/O functions.

  • Hot plug on Marvell 64xx/63xx SAS Controller

Maybe it´s a rookie question: can I use the internal Marvell Controller sata-ports for hot plugging HDDs?
I would like to use on of the ports for a mobile rack with the usability of an eSata-port.
At the properties-section of the controller in the device-manager I enabled hot-plug for all ports. But the attached HDDs don´t show up as removable devices (hope the description is clear enough).
    Thank You in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

assuming it's an Intel drive, TRIM support will only happen on the ICH ports using either the Microsoft AHCI driver or Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.   basically the drive has to be seen as an ATA device and not a SCSI device -- and i'm almost positive the Marvell controller will list everything as SCSI even in SATA mode.
if your SSD has internal garbage collection (ie: SandForce-based drives) then it won't matter where the drive is installed since GC is independent of the OS.
having your SSD as a boot drive with data stored elsewhere is perfectly fine.   i'm switching my D10 to an SSD soon and will be setting mine up the same way.

    Hi Ron.
Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

As described in the web links below, the only way to run LabVIEW Real-Time for ETS on a third-party system would be to follow the procedure for desktop PC computers. You may find that your third party PXI controller may meet the requirements listed in the below link and you will be able to run Real-Time on the controller. If you decide to do this, you will need to purchase the LabVIEW Real-Time Desktop Deployment license (also linked below). After purchasing the deployment license, you will be sent boot disks that will install the real-time OS onto your system. There is no need to purchase Pharlap ETS from Ardence directly.

    http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/13751
Instead of using LabVIEW Real-Time for ETS, you could use LabVIEW Real-Time for RTX instead. This system allows you to run Windows and the Ardence Real-Time eXtensions (RTX) real-time kernel concurrently on one machine. Currently device support for LabVIEW RT for RTX systems is limited to RIO devices. This is all described in the below link.

When can we expect a fix for the Windows 8.1 hotplug issue with a Thunderbolt device.  I got a dock to easy my up-and-go time when moving from using my laptop on the desk vs in meetings.  Instead my computer crashes and I have to reboot.
I am seeing this issue with the 2012 Macbook pro Retina running Bootcamp with Windows 8.1 x64 bit with the F4U055 Dock from Belkin

I can confirm that hotplug does work properly on Windows 8.1 with Asus Thunderbolt ExII (Thunderbolt 2)
But does not work with Windows 8.1 and MacBook Pro Retina (Thunderbolt 1)
To get hot plug working with the Asus Thunderbolt ExII, you install the intel thunderbolt drivers, and then you get an interface where you can eject devices, and do things like setup more detailed security. However, this doesn't have any effect with the MacBook Pro. I suspect that either:
    1) Apple's Thunderbolt hardware doesn't support hotplugging on windows
    2) Hotplugging on Windows requires Thunderbolt 2
So, I should check on my Mac Pro (dustbin edition) to see if it works there with Thunderbolt II
Be great to hear if anybody has any success with this on an Apple device!

That won't help you, as the data that my MIDI controller, and the particular buttons I use with my controller scene setup, probably sends something completely different to yours.
As long as your controller is sending MIDI to Logic, and is not already directly used as a control surface, then it should work fine. Make sure the button is sending a note or controller value, and Learn MIDI should work.
