Qmaster from FCP 5.0 and 5.1 together?

Quick question - A client has FCP 5.0 on several PPC Macs, and is buying one Intel Mac with FCP 5.1.
If they'd like to set up Qmaster (which they're not using at the moment), do they need to upgrade the 5.0 to 5.1 on the other Macs? Any other interoperability issues I should know about?
Thanks.

Turns out that we needed to download some driver updates for the card. It was a relatively simple solution, but took the better part of the day to figure out, largely because Apple's tech support was really less than helpful. The folks at AJA, who make the card, were very helpful, but I think we would have figured it out a lot quicker if Apple provided better phone support for their Pro applications (to my mind, it doesn't matter that there was a third party card involved -- installing the software is what brought the issue up in the first place).
Thanks to Bogie for the tip, though.

  • Simple, basic issue - Sending a few clips at once from FCP to STP and back.

    Hi,
I'm working on a 20 minute video, already cut, hoping to do some simple sound reduction on a few clips.
One scene has two video clips from the same camera shot, wind noise on the audio.
Can I send two or more clips to STP at the same time?
When I try that, the whole 1 hour tape (I did a batch capture) appears in the STP timeline.
Is there a way to send the clips so only those clips go to STP, not the whole original clip in the browser?
Once I do the noise reduction, why can't I get it to automatically apply to the clips in FCP?
I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what.
    Any ideas, anyone?
    Thanks!

Multi-track projects won't behave like audio file projects, with automatic updates in FCP. Once you have saved the project, export a mix, and you can send it back to your FCP timeline in the dialog box.

  • Open a secondary Vi from a principal Vi and run all together

    Hello!
I have to different applications, two different Vi. One of this, the principal Vi have to run all time. I want to open the secondary VI from the principal, use it and close it.......but the principal don't have to stop any time.....
Is possible to do this? I've tried to use the secondary Vi as a suv VI but the principal VI stops until secondary finish. How i havw to do this? Which is the best way?
    Thank you very much
    Merry Christmas to all you!!!!
    Larson

Either place it in its own loop, where it won't stop the rest of the VI, or call it dynamically.
To do this, you need to place on the diagram an Open VI Reference, followed by an Invoke Node (both from the Application Control palette) and wire the VI reference into the invoke node. Then, select the Run VI method in the invoke node and wire F into Wait Until Done. This will make the node run the VI and return immediately. You may need to place another node to open the FP of that VI. Note that if you want to build this into an application, you need to explicitly include this VI in your build. Search for information and tutorial regarding "VI server" to learn more about calling VIs dynamically.
To learn more about LabVIEW, I suggest you try searching this site and google for LabVIEW tutorials. Here and here are a couple you can start with. You can also contact your local NI office and join one of their courses.
In addition, I suggest you read the LabVIEW style guide and the LabVIEW user manual (Help>>Search the LabVIEW Bookshelf).

  • Whats the best way to import video clips from FCP into a personal template

Hey all, I'm doing some tests. I see some color shifting going on when I export out of FCP using QT conversion (same settings as sequence), Importing into Motion, then adding lower third graphics, then exporting out of Motion .... and finally back to FCP. I put the new graphic added layer on top and have the original on bottom. I toggle the monitor on both layers and see a slight saturation drop on the graphic layer. Has anyone noticed that ?
The reason Im doing this is because lets say I have lower thirds that I want to place throughout a hour show. I want to set-up a basic lower third template and just plug in the video clips for the areas that I need those graphics. It would be way to difficult to export out of the timeline in FCP
and rebuild those lower thirds everytime in Motion. Does anyone know of a better way or does everyone have to export out to the desktop and then into Motion every time they want to use a Motion template.
    Thanks to any replies.

Try roundtripping from FCP to Motion and back using Send to Motion. In FCP, Control Click your clip>Send To>Motion Project. The clip will open in Motion with the proper project properties. Make your edits there, press Save, and then render back in FCP. No exporting necessary, although you might see a gamma shift. Much easier.
To do this with an existing Motion template, I'd try copying and pasting in that template's contents once you've sent to Motion from FCP.

  • DVD studio wont recognise PAL footage from FCP

OK, I have shot some footage on my Canon XL1S (PAL) and done some very minimal editing in FCP Studio, again set to DV PAL, I have added no effects as it is basically a video assessment for a friends pilates class. I have then exported it from FCP using Compressor and gone to import the footage into DVDSP...it has then told me that I cannot import NTSC formatted assets into a PAL project? Am I missing something?!

Did you create a PAL m2v in compressor?
You might confirm your workflow.  Make your sequence timeline active in fcp and hit command-zero to view your sequence settings.  Confirm that it's PAL pixel dimensions and 25 fps.
Either export a quicktime with current settings or send your sequence to compressor.   Apply the appropriate DVD preset and then doubleclick on the item in the batch window in compressor and review your settings for the compression in the inspector.  Again, confirm that it's PAL pixel dimensions and 25fps.

  • Compressor from FCP very very slow

Why is it that encoding (for DVD) a sequence from FCP using compressor takes so long.
9 hours for 1 hour video through FCP
Going through compressor directly takes 15 min.

I don't understand the workaround though. Why export from FCP and then again from Compressor. If we're going that route why not just export directly from FCP, uninstall Compressor, and trash the user manual??

  • Transitioning from FCP to PPro - Control-v command

    Hey guys,
I'm transitioning from FCP to PPro, and a shortcut that I use quite often is Control-V. This razorblades/cuts the selected clip/clips at the exact frame where the time indicator is sitting. Is there a similar shortcut for PPro? I know I can hit the Cut key and then click where I want to make a cut, but it would be much easier to simply hit a shortcut key stroke, and cut exactly on the frame without having to guess if the razor tool is on the correct frame.
    CS5.5 - OS X 10.6.8

To split clips on targeted tracks, click the headers of the desired tracks
to target them. Position the current-time indicator where you want to split
the clip or clips, and choose Sequence > Razor Tracks (called Add Edit in CS5.5).
Alternatively, press Ctrl+K (Windows), or Command+K (Mac OS).

  • What's the best way to send a project from fcp to my .mac video gallery ?

    Hi
i have a small 14 minutes project i would like to post on .mac in my gallery.
iMovie can do it easily but thats to many steps from fcp to imovie and to .mac
is there a more direct way of transferring movies ( projects ) ?

You don't send projects from FCP to .mac.
Export the movie using a reasonable compression for internet playback.
Open up your .mac iDisk folder and drag the exported file to your movies folder on the iDisk
Open up .mac, create a web page and link your movie. I suppose iWeb does this as well but have never used the program.
If you want more help, try the .mac forum.
    Good luck,

  • Best way to burn a disk from FCP?

I'm having some problems with disk readability. I sent my under-one-hour video from FCP to Compressor and then sent the MPEG-2 & AIFF files into DVDSP. From there I burned the DVD. It plays fine on my Mac and tabletop player but the disk doesn't play on another player. What's the best way to get a playable disk? Starting with FCP, should the encoding settings (if so, where exactly) match DVDSP and/or Compressor's? For better reliability should I burn the disk in Toast, and if so, how do I do this? Thanks alot. I'm not tech-savvy, so please pardon the questions. Also, should Dolby audio only be used if the video is under one hour?

Technically speaking, you don't "burn a disc from FCP." You export from FCP, then use other programs to encode, author and burn the disc.
DVD-Video playback compatibility depends on many factors, primarily the bit rate used for encoding and the quality of the media (blank disc).
While using a high bit rate does help with maintaining quality, if it's too high it can cause playback problems (skips, stutters, etc). Using poor quality media can cause the same playback problems, or can sometimes cause no playback at all. For example, never, never, NEVER use Memorex discs - they tend to always be at the bottom of the quality barrel.
I always use AC3 audio set around 192 to 224kbps ... I have seen some players choke of the high data rate demands of AIF formatted audio.

  • Anyone using Encore to burn to Blu Ray from FCP?

Given that there's no way to burn a "real" HD DVD, is anyone exporting their FCP movies to Adobe Encore and burning to Blu Ray? If so, have you had any success?

I'm yet to Author a BluRay w/ Encore using Media from FCP... but I do Author SD DVD's by exporting DV QT's from FCP then importing and encoding w/ Encore.
Seems like you'd be able to do the same by exporting an HD QT w/ a CODEC that's also on your PC.

  • How to export HD to iPod format from FCP?

I have a 1080i timeline and am trying export using the iPod export..but instead of scaling it down to 320x180 (16:9) it scales it to 320x240 (4:3) filling the whole screen. Is there a setting or something I am missing?
Is anyone exporting from FCP in HDV and exporting to iPod? Love to hear some ideas or sites for more info about this. Thanks
    Frank

Frank, when I began creating video podcasts Compressor wasn't able to create iPod-compatible H.264 videos (go figure?) so I looked elsewhere.
I came across ffmpegX and just love that program!
Now, I don't typically use it on HDV footage as my current podcast is all DVCAM, but I just gave it a shot with some HDV I shot a couple of months ago.
Worked like a charm. 2-pass VBR took 5 minutes for a 1 minute test clip. 320x180 16:9 apsect ratio. You can either export your timeline as a self-contained QT movie, or as a Ref. movie to save some space. Plus, ffmpregX can batch a bunch of files at once. I find that 500kbps for the video and 96kbps for the audio works pretty well and keeps the quality:file size ratio in good order. Play around with the settings and then create a preset.
    Good luck!

  • Still images from FCP Studio 2

Ok, I have done it again. I edited a documetnary yet, forgot to have a photographer on the set.
I have captured some great images using my HVX200 but of course when exporting a still from FCP, the resolutin is only 72dpi and I need 300.
Could I import teh stills from FCP into Photoshop and just change the dpi? Would this be suitable for printing the images?
When doing that, it seems just to make them a larger photo.
    THANKS!
    Lawrence

Yes, you can change the DPI to 300. No, this won't make the images any sharper.  They started out 1280x1080, 72dpi.  Merely increasing the DPI won't make them higher resolution.  It will still look like video.  If you hire a photoshop pro, a graphics designer, they might have a few plugins in their toolkit that can help, like Genuine Fracals that help with upscaling smaller images, plus know-how on how to deal with this. But it won't look like it originated from a 12 MP camera.
Suitable for printing? That's up to you. How does it look to you?

  • Missing audio when sending from FCP

When I send my project to Soundtrack Pro from FCP, Soundtrack opens and loads everything up, but oddly some audio clips show no waveform, and contain no sound, but the sound is clearly present and working in FCP.
    What could be causing this?

mrjam, I am having the same exact problem. I have a sequence in FCP and am using the "send to "Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project" command. I have tried this almost 30 times now and only twice has it worked properly, i have no clue what was different these two time and tried to repeat the process the exact same way to no avail. What a pain. I have no clue why this function doesn't work. I have a mono pair in FCP and when i "Send to.." there are no waveforms in STP at all, and of course, no audio. Funny thing is it did work twice! Sounds like a major bug! Have you had any luck?

  • QMaster Settings, And Freezes When Rendering From FCP

I have a Octo Mac Pro and I setting the settings in QMaster to 12 intances, and even 8 for cluster renderings. When I tried to render a clip from FCP to Compressor, it freezes in the Batch Monitor at like 50% and stops? Has anybody else had this problem? What are the best settings in Qmaster to get good results ? Sweet spot? Instances settings etc.? for Cluster renderings?
    Thanks TimC

See kenstone.net for some articles on the topic of optimizing Qmaster.
But freezing usually indicates a different kind of problem, probably associated with your source movie or the amount of space on the target drive.
