QoS - Bandwidth Control

Hello Experts,
we are using a couple of 4404 Controllers with software version 6.0.188.0. We would like to introduce the wifi and wired Portal to our custumers. During our testing period we discovered a little problem with the Bandwidth Control via QoS.
These are our settings:
Description...................................... For Portal (Background)
Average Data Rate................................ 512
Burst Data Rate.................................. 512
Average Realtime Data Rate....................... 256
Realtime Burst Data Rate......................... 256
Maximum RF usage per AP (%)......................  50
Queue Length.....................................  25
protocol......................................... none
If we download a file the bandwidth restriction works fine. We get a downstream about 62 kB/s. If we upload a file the bandwidth restricion seems not working. We get an upstream about 1660 kB/s.
Are we missing something? Is there a setting to control the upstream behavior independent from downstream?
Thanks a lot, best regards,
   Mathias, Michael

The settings described are for over-the-air bandwidth. The Ap can only control downstream QoS or data that it sends. Upstream QoS will be handled by the client device and cannot be controlled by the Ap. The Ap cannot enforce QoS settings for upstream traffic.

  • Bandwidth control druing large file transfer

My user has an application that requires him to transfer hugh files from one location to another location.
our whole company is connected via ipvpn tunnel each office has a 20Mb ethernet WAN link.
when this user starts his file transfer, it will choke up the whole 20Mb in that particular office.
we have checked at the application layer, but there is no option to control the file transfer speed or bandwidth
is that any way, I can control the bandwidth usage of this user?

Your options for bandwidth control depend much on your platforms.  Some devices would allow you to police or shape your traffic, but at Vasilii describes, probably the best solution would be to deprioritize this bulk transfer traffic using QoS.  (For 20 Mbps, you might need a hierarchal shaper.  Also for this to work well with Internet VPN, you cannot have anything else sharing Internet ingress.)

  • Bandwidth controlling problem

i have a 3550 catalyst and i configured it for bandwidth controlling
    i have used POLICE command
its work fine and i saw it limit the bandwidth
but there is a little problem
when i limit the bandwidth at 1024000 and i useing all the bandwidth and monitor the bandwidth i see it shows the network uses half bandwidth.

    mls qos
access-list 150 permit ip any any
    class-map bandwidth
    match-all access-group 150
    policy-map bandwidth
    class bandwidth
    police 1024000 128000 exceed-action drop
    interface fa0/0
    service-policy input bandwidth
    thats all
when i monitor the bandwidth usage at input
    i see its 512k
and if i configure it with the number 2048000 256000
    then it uses 1024k

  • Bandwidth control on WLC

    Hi,
There is some kind of bandwidth control for ssid guest on the WLC?

    Hi,
    you can use QoS roles:
    http://tiny.cc/7zx9jw
This will only affect downstream, not upstream traffic.

  • Qos/bandwidth management possible from 2950?

    Hello,
I was curious as to how granular I can be with bandwidth management on a C2950 switch. What I would like is to be able to restrict any SESSION to 300 kilobits or less depending on the IP Traffic type. Basically what I have is MS Terminal Servers connected to a C2950 switch in turn connected to a c2621 router which in turn sends RDP,Printing and Web Traffic back to clients, who are connected using PPPoe w/ C837's. Is it even possible to be able to restrict bandwidth by session, anywhere in this setup?
Thanks for any help. I just started researching QOS, Bandwidth Management and am lost as to where I should be looking for help. Due to the fact that I want to restrict by single sessions not by total amount of traffic, its confusing trying to get help.

You can do this with a 2950, as long as you run the EI image (enhanced). Check the QOS section where it says Policing in this document. Its in pdf format.

I Am Using Cisco ASA 5505 VPN Firewall and 6Mbps 1:1 dedicated internet connection.
in Lan Side we have 3 networks one for Internet Users one For VPN Users One for CCTV
i would like to split the 6Mbps bandwidth for these network 3 networks 3x2 each
each network use 2Mbps bandwidth. The VPN and CCTV Users use up to 6:00 pm after that the bandwidth will be free
after the 6:00 pm we need to use the the VPN and CCTV line bandwidth to the internet Users.

so please help me with suitable configuration for my purpose./please tell me which device will support for this/what is have to do for this.

There's not much of that sort of functionality built into the ASA 5505 entry level firewall. To do that sort of thing in the firewall, you would have to move up to one of the newer 5500-X series with next generation firewall features and build a policy using Application Visibility and Control (AVC).
You can do some crude controls with QoS - the configuration guide chapter on doing that is here.

  • QoS bandwidth rate limit don't work

    Hello
Buy a router RV120W, and one of the reasons is limit of bandwidth (QoS). I set up a profile of 1-256 kbps limit, and apply it to the only VLAN that is configured, but does not work and can navigate using the full bandwidth of the internet connection. My firmware version is 1.0.2.6
    Screenshots attached
    thanks
    screenshots attached

    Struggling with a similar issue:
the setup: internet adsl <--1mbs--> combined router/modem <--100mbs--> RV 120W
Internet speed is 1mbs. I want to priotize voip calls (via port) and deprioritize one machine (doing downloads). rest of the network should have something in between.
    Firmware upgraded to 1.0.3.10
I created the profiles bindings, then in QoS settings, selected Priority, Wan total bandwidth 1mbs, and distributed my profiles onto low/med/high (10/31/61).
When what should be low is downloading, it gets the whole 1mbs and the other are dead slow.
Changed to rate limit, changed the parameters, etc... no more luck.
Can you please shed some light as how to configure this - in my case, the whole bw of wan is being used, and prioriization is not happening,

  • Access-Lists, Bandwidth Control

    Hi,
I have a cisco 2811 router which is connected to 4 routed vlans. I would like to control the bandwidth for the users on these vlan because these vlans are public hotspots. Some users are choking the whole bandwidth due to which others are unable to get connected. I would like to block P2P applications and control the bandwidth there.
How do I go about doing this? I have attached the configuration of my cisco router.

  • Airport Extreme - Guest Network - Bandwidth Control

    Hello Everyone,
I'm in need to deploy a solution to someone in a bar and I wanted to know if it's possible to do it with the Airport Extreme of Apple.
I already saw some study cases, and I not sure if it's possible to do what I pretend.
    This is the cenario:
The user have in his office an ISP router with wireless that provides him with network connectivity for all his devices, in his office.
But where the clients are the signal doesn't get there, so we passed a cable to the bar, and we want to deploy there network guest access to the clients.
The thing is that we want to make the clients network to don't have access to the internal network devices, and then to controll at what velocity then can connect. Providing sometimes higher speeds, and other times lower speeds. (bandwidth management / limited).
Is it possible for me to use the Airport extreme for that? If not, do I have any other solution?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards!

As stated this is not consumer level router functionality.
You either need a router that takes a third party firmware.. eg Gargoyle.. just google for it as I am not allowed to post details.
Or you need a pro wireless hotspot solution. These are expensive..$500-1000 but work without bothering the business owner.. you provide each person who buys a drink a printout ticket with username and password.. which allow both limited time and bandwidth. It is better than just making a free for all. There are also methods where people can login with credit card details.. but I think it is better to use the ticket type system.
For a cheap free for all.. as I said look at gargoyle.

  • QoS/bandwidth throttling on autonamous WAPs?

We have about 5 autonamous 1231AG WAPs running IOS v12.3(8)JEC. I want to be able to limit, or at very best, prioritize corporate and voice WLAN traffic over those using guest SSID (VLANs listed below). So, I want to priortize traffic by VLAN. VLAN priortiy is: voice, corporate, management, guest.
Would the best way to be to go to each WAP, QoS, and make a new policy for each VLAN? For corporate, I assigned all IP precedences a CoS of 3 (Excellent). For voice, all IP precedences a coS of Voice (6), and guest, all IP porecedences a CoS of (1). I would then assign the respective policies to each VLAN, inbound and outbound. IMy thinking is that no matter what precedence traffic is on guest VLAN, the WAP will downgrade it to CoS 1, making it the lowest priority traffic coming through the WAP.
Would this accomplish what I am trying to do? Please note, these WAPs are not plugged into Cisco gear. Rather, we have Nortel switches, so talking of Catalyst gear won't work.
    VLAN1=management (native)
    VLAN10=Corporate LAN
    VLAN20=voice
    VLAN66=guest

Hmmm...I have to ask if the Nortel switches recognize the CoS functionality. I have no idea.
Your scenario is this - QoS really happens at the switch anyway. You can set the settings you discussed, but in the air, there is no QoS in a radio contention based network. Not yet anyway.
So, if you are fighting for radio space, make it to the AP and then get passed on to a switch that may or may not recognize the effort, you might not be doing yourself any favors.
Are you prioritizing voice now? This is a good question I'd like to read up on - thanks.

  • User log in bogging down network - How to QOS / Bandwidth per computer

    Hi,
I am working with a slow network (100mbs), we are having an issue were one user has a large profile and when that user logs in onto a new computer it almost halts the network.
The obvious solution it to install a 1GB switch, which I am going to do but...
This company is rapidly growing and it wont be long before there are several users with large profiles logging in simultaneously.
I would like to implement some sort of QoS policy where each computers connection to the server is limited to a max of say 100mb.
Can this be done with built in GPO's or Free Software.
The site is running a single server 2012 domain controller. that is also the file server.
Thanks in advanced for any help you can give.
    Cheers

    Hi,
    >>Can this be done with built in GPO's or Free Software
Before going further, we can use GPO to configure policy-based QoS to manage network traffic.
Regarding this point, the following articles can be referred to as reference.

Based on the description, I do agree that this should be the way to go.

  • RV082 and RV016 bandwidth control of ipsec tunnels

I have a network setup with a hub & spoke configuration using the RV series routers.  Due to the fact that bandwidth varies by site and is precious, is there any ports other than UDP 500 that need to be used for allocating the traffic levels?

    Hi,
It is not very clear to me what exactly you are trying to configure, maybe you can share more details, but to answer directly to your question - port UDP 500 and UDP 4500 are used by IPSec only to establish the VPN tunnel and renegotiation when the SA lifetime expires. The traffic is transferred by ESP packets.

  • Can QoS be implemented when VPN tunnel bandwidth is unknown?

Is it possible to have some sort of QoS on both sides of a VPN tunnel when the speed at the endpoint is unknown. In other words is it possible to have QoS bandwidth parameters to be automatically detected/adapted to the actual bandwidth?

    Hey Martin,
Thanks for your reply. I Think IntServ won't be a solution straight away, I'll try to explain what I would like to do.
What my issue is that I have a few locations who are kind of mobile, and each location connects to the internet via various links, depending on which is available. This link can be a normal ISP which blocks all traffic except port 80 and 443. The connection could be a simple ISDN dialin or a dedicated T1 link.
Because there is a Cisco VoIP router on the mobile location and some users' data should have precedence over others' I would like to implement QoS.
My idea was when I were able to set up a site-to-site SSL VPN tunnel to a router in a datacenter (using Array Network stuff if the Cisco can't do site-to-site SSL) I would have more control over the internetlink. I Would not be limited to using only port 80 and 443: all traffic would just go encrypted and look like normal HTTPS traffic.
It's likely that this VPN link would always consume the maximum available bandwidth. When it is be possible for some QoS mechanism to "detect" the speed of the VPN I could let's say dedicate bandwidth for 4 VoIP calls and the remaining bandwidth can be made available for normal traffic. Note that this normal traffic should have some priority levels too.
Assigning dedicated bandwidth to VoIP isn't a big problem I think, however how can I make x percentage of the remaining bandwidth available to user x and y percentage available to user y?
    I Hope I wrote it understandable ;).

  • Lowering my bandwidth (Qos?) setup help needed

In order to better decide if a lower bandwidth from my provider will suffice I'm trying to find out if there's a way I can configure my router to limit bandwidth to a certain speed, so as to simulate what this lower speed will feel like.
Having read several threads on the subject it seems like the "QOS bandwidth management" feature is the way to go, which my RVS-4000 router has. However, even after reading Cisco's configuration guides and other Cisco pages on the subject I'm having trouble setting this up, finding it a bit complicated for a network novice to understand. Can someone please tell me how to set this up?
Enclosed is a screenshot of my router's QOS page.

Yes, this seems to be true if you go to the "manual" set-up method. It failed for me too, several times, because of this. Finally, I even tried to set the TC to Create a network of the same specs of the network I wanted it to join. That failed, as expected, because it caused interference with the existing network on my old AirPort Extreme Base Station. My next try was to connect AirPort Utility to the TC (wirelessly from my MacBook) and retry using the easy set-up method. Lo and behold, it worked, and "Join Existing Network" now appears on its Manual Setup panel in AirPort Utility.
Looks like a little bug in AirPort Utility, having that pop-up menu sometimes missing that item.
So, long story short, my TC had this problem, and now it works.
I'd go through the setup from factory reset again to document it exactly, but the family is using it now, so the best I can do is describe it from memory. If the easy setup to Join Existing Network doesn't work for you, then re-do the setup to Create Network with the same specs as the one you want to join. Then when it comes up arguing with the other Base Station ("I am the master of this network." +"No, I am the master of this network!"+), go back to AirPort Utility and connect to the TC, going through the easy setup again, choosing Join instead. Then it might work.
