Query on use of sequences.

This question was already posted in another forum wrongly. Just duplicating here to get more responses.
Is it a bad practice for a DB to have the primary key populated from a sequence(using SEQ.nextval expression)?

Hi, (maybe you should provide the link to the other forum so that we
can see what's already been said)
Is it a bad practice for a DB to have the primary key populated from a
sequence(using SEQ.nextval expression)?Absolutely not. There is a "holy war" about whether it is better to
have "natural" keys or synthetic ones. That war is essentially over,
the synthetic (or to use your terminology an arbitrary "sequence")
key having won.
IMHO, the (vast?) majority of Oracle databases (and all the other RDBMSs) use
sequences (or Identity or Autonumber or whatever) i.e. synthetic keys.
See here for some notes (basic) about db design: http://www.kudzuworld.com/articles/DBDesign/index.en.aspx
and here for note on Oracle (compared with other RDBMSs): http://www.orafaq.com/wiki/AutoNumber_and_Identity_columns

  • Copy Input Ready Query Variables into Planning Sequence

    Hi all,
           We have the following scenario. We developed a model using Web Template. The model has an input ready query and a Panning sequence associated with it. Both of them using the same Planning Filter that has a input variable for Profit Center (say ZPCTR). If I run this model in Portal the planning sequence automatically takes the variable given for the input ready query and the sequence runs without any problem.
           We were asked to implement the same model in BEx as the users felt more comfortable using Excel when working on this model. When we assinged the planning sequence to a button and after we run the input ready query and then click on the button to run the planning sequence, we get an error message saying "You have to enter values before you execute". The Planning sequence is not taking the values we enter for the input ready query automatically.
          I read through the forums on the same issue and saw that most of them reported about the same but could not find a conclusive answer. I tried the following options.
    1) Enter the expected values in the excel in one location and gave the address in the "Command Range" of the planning sequence. Still it does not work.
    2) Tried SAP suggested method as given in http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/45/e301089d574a88e10000000a155369/frameset.htm It also does not work
    3) Couple of them suggested to use a different variable for Profit Center in the filter of Planning sequence (say ZPCTR_EXIT) and populate this variable. I wrote an exit for this variable and populated a fixed value say '100' into it. The sequence runs as expected. But I do not want use a constant, I want to store the value entered in ZPCTR into ZPCTR_EXIT.
       when I use the regular logic "LOOP AT i_t_var_range INTO var_inpiut WHERE vnam = 'ZPCTR' ", it does not work. the exit variable works if I store some constant values, not variable values.
        Can you please suggest how can I work with this. Is there any table from which I can read the profit center value the users enters into the Exit variable.
    Thanks for your time,
    Ram.

    This error generally comes when we use some user input variable in the sequence which is not restricted in the query. Even though you are using the same filter for both planning sequence and query, check the planning functions inside the sequence which might read an user input variable which is not available in the query so that it is not appearing in the query selection screen. Like in FOX reading a variable using VARV or a variable restricted in the field for condition of planning function etc. Make sure that all the variables used in the sequence (planning functions) are kept in query restrictions if they are of type ready for user input so that they will appear in the selection screen.

  • Can I refactor this query to use an index more efficiently?

    I have a members table with fields such as id, last name, first name, address, join date, etc.
    I have a unique index defined on (last_name, join_date, id).
    This query will use the index for a range scan, no sort required since the index will be in order for that range ('Smith'):
    SELECT members.*
            FROM members
            WHERE last_name = 'Smith'
            ORDER BY joindate, idIs there any way I can get something like the following to use the index (with no sort) as well:
    SELECT members.*
            FROM members
            WHERE last_name like 'S%'
            ORDER BY joindate, idI understand the difficulty is probably; even if it does a range scan on every last name 'S%' (assuming it can?), they're not necessarily in order. Case in point:
    Last_Name:  JoinDate:
    Smith          2/5/2010
    Smuckers     1/10/2010An index range scan of 'S%' would return them in the above order, which is not ordered by joindate.
    So is there any way I can refactor this (query or index) such that the index can be range scanned (using LIKE 'x%') and return rows in the correct order without performing a sort? Or is that simply not possible?

The db engine accesses contiguous index entries and then uses the ROWID values in the index to retrieve the table rows.

  • Unable to parse query when using dblink in forms 4.5

    Hi,
    I have created a query that uses a DBlink because I need to do query on a table located on another dbase. I've used the query on creating my report using Reports 6i. The report needs to be called from a menu on our system, which was developed under Developer 2000 (forms 4.5). The problem is, when I tried to access the report from the menu, it returns the error 'unable to parse query'. What I did after getting error was to create a dummy module using Forms 6i, and call my report from there. It worked fine.
    By the way, the table that I'm accessing using the dblink is under Oracle 9i dbase, and the dbase of the system that I've been working at is Oracle 8i.
    I don't have any idea on what's causing this error. Is there a compatibility issue when using a dblink located in Oracle 9i database with forms 4.5?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
    Not sure if it is the good answer, but I know that Forms does not recognize dblink and owner.object syntax. You have to create a simple synomym that point to the distant object and use this synonym within Forms.

  • How to use parallel sequence for split the operation qty. urgent or other o

    PP guru
    My scenario is as follows.
    I ve one material suppose…xyz.
    For that material I' ve created bom, routing.
    In routing I' ve mention only one operation. 0010.
    Now I' ve the production order of 1000 kg.
    I want to use two work centers to run this production order. ( e.g.work center a and b)
    In routing I used work center a.
    In short I want split that operation.
    So what I ve to do or use parallel sequence and how???
    or else is there any other option to split the order to two or more machines/work center?
    Pls explain me in brief.
    Regards,
    Ram

    Hi,
      If you want to carry the production with two different work centers , first you need to split the operation qty.
    For this in the order type dependent parameters OPL8
    in the controlling tab page enable the indicator Cost collector
    and set the default rule as PP2.
      Create a Product cost collector with KKF6N.
       Now in the production order , select the operation and choose functions--->>> split.
       Now enter the operation split quantity and execute.
       Now in MD04 you can see two production order.
       In the second production order change the work center in the operation overview as desired and save.

  • Use a sequence template multiple times in same project

    I have created a lower-third animated title and saved it as a sequence as it has sound. What I'm confused about it how I import that sequence and use it multiple times in the same project and change the content of the title for each sequence. If I import the sequence and change the title in one instance, it changes the title of all instances. I would like to use the sequence and be able to change each title. I have even tried copying sequences and renaming them but any editing still seems to affect the parent sequence file.
    I know this must be really simple but I'm going round in circles here. Any pointers appreciated.

    Take a look at this thread:
    style sheets for titles?
    I'm not sure if an AFX Live text will bring over the audio, it is not something I have tried.

    I currently use parameters, and they are passed from the form to the report. Report is then generated based on a function returning ‘strongly typed’ cursor. The ‘strongly typed’ cursor in my case returns a record consisting of an orderly collection of fields.
    This collection of fields is returned by another function that relies on the IF … THEN logic.
    However, the number of IF ... THEN statements is quite large (currently 64 covering all possible combinations of 6 parameters available in the form).
    I would like to avoid the large number of IF … THEN statements, and hope that there is a way of passing a string to a query, where the Dynamic SQL would in Select close and Where close reflect parameters passed by the form.
    In addition to this I would like to avoid creating and populating a table or a view dedicated to the report, because this may lead to a conflict in case of multiple users concurrently generating reports with different choice of parameters.

  • Is there a way to enforce the use of sequences

    is there a way to stop someone from inserting an id without using the sequence?
    CREATE SEQUENCE id_seq
       START WITH 1;
    CREATE TABLE test_table (id_seq NUMBER (4) PRIMARY KEY);
    INSERT INTO test_table
         VALUES (id_seq.NEXTVAL);
    INSERT INTO test_table
         VALUES (2);
    INSERT INTO test_table
         VALUES (id_seq.NEXTVAL);gives us
    ORA-00001: unique constraint (DSAMSTRC.SYS_C0091648) violated
    as it should
    however is there a check constraint of some ilk that ensures that the user is using the sequence when doing inserts?
    so that the second insert
    INSERT INTO test_table
         VALUES (2);gives me some sort of check constraint violation that I'm not using the id_seq.NEXTVAL ?

    Justin:
    One minor problem with your trigger. If the "bad" insert is the first thing done in the session you get:
    SQL> insert into test_table values(25);
    insert into test_table values(25)
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-08002: sequence ID_SEQ.CURRVAL is not yet defined in this session

    ORA-04088: error during execution of trigger 'OPS$ORACLE.TRG_TEST_TABLE'If you want to raise an exception instead of just silently using the sequence as Frank suggests you need something more like:
    create trigger trg_test_table
       before insert on test_table
       for each row
    declare
       l_currval integer;
       no_currval exception;
       PRAGMA EXCEPTION_INIT (no_currval, -8002);
    begin
       select id_seq.currval
       into l_currval
       from dual;
       if( l_currval != :new.id_seq ) then
          raise_application_error( -20001, 'Hey!  Use the sequence' );
       end if;
    exception
       when no_currval then
          raise_application_error( -20001, 'Hey!  Use the sequence' );
    end;John

    Please post your trigger code and your database version ( the result of: select * from v$version; ).
    Put it between tags, so your example will stay formatted.
    (see: http://forums.oracle.com/forums/help.jspa for more examples regarding tags)

    i think u have missed it.
    RSZCOMPDIR IS THE ONLY TABLE WHICH PROVIDES THE DATA.
    ENTER TECHNICAL QUERY Name in RSZCOMPDIR-COMPID.
    RSZCOMPDIR-TSTNAM gives you the user id of sap bw user who made the change.
    RSZCOMPDIR-TSTPDAT gives you date on which  change was made .
    RSZCOMPDIR-TSTPTIM   gives you timestamp on which  change was made .
    all users details can be obtained from TCODE SU01 where you need to enter sap user id.
    You can also get user name( description) by using tcode SE09 and entering above sap user id.

  • Combine two reports in query designer using key figure with sap exit

    Hi experts,
    i want to combine two reports in query designer using key figure with sap exit
    in the report 1 key figure calculation based on the open on key date(0P_DATE_OPEN)
    to calculate due and not due in two columns
    in report 2 key figure calculate in the time zones using given in variable Grid Width (0DPM_BV0) like due in 1 to 30 days, 31 to 60 days...the due amount based on the open on key date(0P_DATE_OPEN)
    to calculate in 1-30, 31-60, 61-90, 91-120, 121-150 and >150 days in 6 columns
    now i have requirement like this
    not due, 1-30, 31-60, >60, due,1-30, 31-60, >60 in 8 columns
    or
    not due, due, 1-30, 31-60, 61-90, 91-120, 121-150 and >150 in 8 col
    thank you

    Hi Dirk,
    you perhaps know my requirement,
    for the management to make used in one report,
    we have in reporting finacials Ehp3.
    Vendor Due Date Analysis - which show due, not due
    Vendor Overdue Analysis - show only due and analysis in time grid frame
    i want to combine in one report that show NOT DUE, DUE, DUE time frames in grid.

  • Invalid column name in query string - using Format function

    In my post just before this one the problem was solved for writing a query string using a date range. The rest of the query string includes the same date field (Call_Date) but formatted as 'MMM-YY'. I get an invalid column name error when I add this field to the query string. Here is the rest of the query string:
    strSql = "SELECT Format(CALL_DATE,'mmm-yy'), " _
    & "HOME_REGION FROM CCC2.CASE_EPRP " _
    & "WHERE (HOME_REGION = 'NCR') AND " _
    "(CALL_DATE >= to_date( '1/1/2002', 'MM/DD/YYYY' )" _
    & "AND CALL_DATE <= to_date( '2/28/2003', 'MM/DD/YYYY' ))"
    In the Access Query tool I can include this field
    Format(CALL_DATE,'mmm-yy')
    and the query runs fine (I just need to make it dynamic using ADO). But in my ADO query string above, I get the invalid column name error. Is there a way I can include
    Format(CALL_DATE,'mmm-yy')
    in my ADO query string? I appologize for not being more familiar with Oracle Sql. Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks again,
    Rich

    Thank you very much for your reply. I think I'm getting closer to the solution. Just I got an error message
    "date format not recognized"
    when I add "to_char( call_date, 'mmm-yy' )" to the query string. I tried using all uppercase, but that did not make a difference. Do I need to use to_date inside the to_char maybe?
    to_char(to_date(call_date, 'mmm/yy'), 'mmm-yy')
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Use of Sequence in Match-Merge

    Dear All,
    I have a source table containing name and address data. I want to do householding, which means I need to split the data using a match-merge operator. The address data is the merged output, and the name data is the cross-reference output. All well and good so far.
    I want eventually to load the outputs into two levels of a Customer dimension (although for testing right now, I'm just using two ordinary target tables). I know that I will need a 'business key' to link the merged and the cross-reference outputs (as the two dimensional levels). I decide that I shall create a column in both outputs called HH_SEQ, and load this Household Sequence number from a Sequence (which I prepared earlier).
    In Merge Rules, for the Attribute HH_SEQ, I use a Rule Type of Sequence, and select the appropriate Sequence from the drop-down list box. I map this attribute in the MERGE outgroup to the appropriate column in the target merged table, and MM_HH_SEQ in the XREF outgroup to the appropriate column in the target cross-reference table.
    Here is the issue: to get HH_SEQ to be available as a potential Output Attribute in either Merge Output or Cross-Reference Output, it must first be present as a Source Attribute. Which means I had to add it to Input Attributes first. But of course it is not on my input source table! And thus I get a "VLD-1000 Input parameter INGRP1.HH_SEQ does not have input" warning.
    Either I'm just not understanding how to use the Sequence rule type properly (the documentation is pretty atrocious, mind), or there is some technique required here that is just not apparent from several days of experimentation.
    All help gratefully received!
    Regards,
    Donna
    p.s. it does actually compile and run just fine!

    Hi Donna
    I think you are using it in the correct way! I've seen other examples like this from the MM creators.
    The warning can be ignored, I think it is there to highlight a potential issue if it was being used for a scenario other than what you are doing.
    Cheers
    David
