Query Re: 'Show Clipping for Black/White Points'

Good morning.
Please can anyone help me with a query.
I have recently come across the 'Show Clipping for Black/White Points' in Levels and Curves and it's driving me mad!
Until recently, I have always opened raw images in Camera Raw or Lightroom, checked for clipping there, and if need be use the recovery or blacks sliders to recover detail. I then open my 16 bit image image in PS in ProPhotoRGB, using levels to make any alterations. I would check to see in the histogram if all is ok and left it there. It all felt pretty straight forward.
Now though I've taken to holding the alt button and going through each channel only to find that clipping occurs every time I begin to move the slider; however small.
The only way I can avoid this clipping is by leaving the levels bar alone altogether. Then there is no clipping in any channels but the image looks flat, and the histogram shows up big gaps on both sides (at least to the naked eye).
I always thought the idea was to move the sliders so there aren't big gaps on either side.
But if I move the slider say from 255 to 254, a red dot will appear, to 250, a few clusters, and by the time I've adjusted the levels to where I think it should be at 230 (based on the histogram) there will be clipping in all colours, all over the place!
I don't know what I'm meant to do. It's more frustrating because I thought I had dealt with the clipping in Camera Raw. Is there a way to avoid this whilst still moving the sliders to where I want them to be?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

So why are you pressing alt when dragging the Levels handles if the information this provides is not to your liking?
Good point! That's what I've been asking myself.
I think I was happier when I was blissfully unaware of clipping, brightening away to my heart's content! It feels as if the more I discover the less I really know.
Thanks D Fosse for the tip on curves. Much appreciated.

  • Change preferences for Auto black/white point in Camera RAW

    Hey guys,
    By hold shift and clicking on the slider for whites Camera RAW automatically sets the white point, same goes for the black. However, it always gets pushed to 255 (white).
    Is there some way that you can edit this preference?

    I don't know, but somebody may know for sure over in the camera raw forum:

    You check for costcenter data in the data targets, for the given PO and vendors,.

    Good day!
    I have to create a Query with the below requirement.
    I have to create a Query to show the values for the current month and the last 12 months data.
    Can you please guide me how to achieve this ??
    thank you,

    explain the exact problem..? as you mentioned you want to create query to show values for current month and last 12 months.. so I think you want to show values for 12 months from current data.. you can achive this by multiple way..
    you can have selection screen and field with date .. and restrict based on system current date and 12 months before or you can handle this at your target.. .. I mean there are multiple ways to restrict data by date range..
    for some more hints..

  • Setting White Points in Camera Raw

    When setting white points in Adobe Camera Raw, while holding down Alt (on a PC), are the red marks what I should look for? Because white marks also appear? Which ones are relevant for the white point?

    ACR doesn’t work that way.  There is an eyedropper for the overall white-balance that you can set by clicking on a relatively bright, neutral area, but there aren’t black and white-point eyedroppers.  But, what is clipped black or white is determined by the output colorspace you have set at the bottom and you can get some idea of what will be clipped black and white by turning on the clipping indicators and watching for the areas you’d be eye-droppering on (the black and white patches in your grayscale) to start showing the clipping color overlay for black and white, but any further toning adjustments will move data in and out of what is darker than black and lighter than white so what is clipped for output will change as you fiddle with the various toning sliders.
    The reason things are different:  In PS, when you set a black-point and white-point in Levels and click Ok, the data below and above those is thrown away and that is the starting point for the next adjustment.  In ACR, things are non-destructive and all the adjustments occur simultaneously, rather than sequentially as in PS, and no clipping occurs until you create the output file.  This means that the pixels that are darker than your black-point and lighter than your white-point are still there, and can be moved into the black-to-white range if you do further toning adjustments.  Having more headroom of the pixels that are outside the black-to-white range is good because you won’t get the posterization or banding that occurs when colors and levels are clipped after each adjustment in PS.
    Can you describe what you intend your overall workflow to be on an image:  how much adjusting will occur in ACR and how much, if any, might happen in PS, after the image is opened into PS from ACR, or opened from a file saved from ACR?  There might be other ways to approach what you’re trying to accomplish.

    no, not possible.
    Mask is a shape that either allow or block visibility.
    The content on the mask layer is define as whole, you can't
    pick.
    Whatever is that you don't want to show has to be removed.
    And no, you can't use video to be a mask.

  • Black & White Concepts

    Hi All,
    Is there any website that I can go to look concepts for black & white magazines? Or maybe newspaper?
    Also what do you call a black & white magazine? Should I call it Newspaper? or it's just gonna be Magazine?
    Thank you!

    A newspaper is black and white and read all over (or at least it used to be).

  • Setting  a White Point and Black Point

    I would like to suggest for future versions of lIghtroom to have an ability to set the white point and black points similar to levels and curves in Photoshop. This would be in addition to setting middle grey in the white balance settings currently in Lightroom.  I find that the method of using Threshold to find the closest white and black pixels and then using these points to set the black and white points in curves or levels provides a better way to fix a color cast than the methods available in Lightroom.

    MB,
    There is no real need for Black and White point eyedropper type tools in Lightroom.  By holding down the Alt key while changing the Blacks or Exposure sliders the display will show the areas that are being clipped.  This is much faster than looking around for the darkest and lightest areas manually.  If you just like to click to taste (like using the White balance dropper) then forget the Alt key and just move the sliders until you get the desired look.
    Remember that the problem with Photoshop is that there are so many ways to do the same thing that it has become difficult and bloated.  Lightroom strives to keep the interface as clear as possible.

  • Lightroom or Elements for a simple purpose - RAW to black&white

    Hi,
    I have no experience whatsoever with digital photography, I've been working on analogue for several years now, but want to give it a try...
    The thing is that I'm looking for a software, which will allow me:
    - possibility to convert color RAW from camera into black&white RAW, then export as a JPEG (I'd like to have a chance to enhance the contrast etc. on the RAW in b&w before having a final file, and maybe add option of plugins as NIK Silver Efex in the future if I feel a need for it)
    - add white frame around the JPEG, of which size I could choose, and maybe add my name/logo + date on the frame
    I'm confused and don't know which software would allow me to do that two, simple things - Lightroom or Elements?
    Thanks for your support!

    Elements is more limited in how to adjust the colors to black-and-white.
    Lightroom has more sophisticated adjustments.  These adjustments are the same as in the Camera Raw plug-in for Photoshop, but absent in the Camera Raw plug-in for Elements.  The adjustments allow you to enhance the contrast and brightness of the gray-level for narrow ranges of original colors instead of a simple removal of color with a default color-balance or clicking on a preset that Elements has.
    Here is a very verbose video introduction to the LR B/W conversion on an example photo, viewed best in full-screen HD:
    http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/bw_workflow_in_lightroom.shtml
    Here is a step-by-step example with screenshots and description, from 2008, but the adjustments still mostly apply, except the vignetting you’d use wouldn’t be lens-related, it’d be the Post-Crop Vignetting in the Effects section that didn’t exist back in 2008:
    http://layersmagazine.com/create-stunning-black-and-white-images-in-lightroom.html
    These were just the first and third links that showed up after Googling for Lightroom Black and White.
    BTW, I am a photo-hobbyist and use Lightroom every day, so it’s not just for professionals making money off their photos that need something fast.  For me it is more about seriousness and perfection and freedom.

  • Gif image shows only in black and white

    Hello...
    I'm trying to convert normal image to PlanarImage but the PlanarImage will show only black & white image in the applet. My guess is that it has something to do with bands but I can't figure out how to solve the problem.
    Here is the code what I'm trying to use in applet's init method
    public void init(){
         Image my_gif;
         URL base;
         MediaTracker mt;
         mt = new MediaTracker(this);
         try {
              base = getCodeBase();
         catch (Exception e) {}
         my_gif = getImage(base,"image.gif");
         mt.addImage(my_gif,1);
         try {
         mt.waitForAll();
         catch (InterruptedException e) {}
         int imageHeight = my_gif.getHeight(this);
         int imageWidth = my_gif.getWidth(this);
         int numBands = 3;
         int len = imageHeight * imageWidth * numBands;
         byte[] imageData = null;
         PixelGrabber pixeli = new PixelGrabber(my_gif, 0, 0, imageWidth, imageHeight,false);
         SeekableStream ss = null;
         try {
              pixeli.grabPixels();
              imageData = (byte[])pixeli.getPixels();
         } catch (InterruptedException e2) {
              e2.printStackTrace();
         ColorModel cm = pixeli.getColorModel();
         SampleModel sm = cm.createCompatibleSampleModel(imageWidth,imageHeight);
         TiledImage tiledImage = new TiledImage(new Point(),sm,imageWidth,imageHeight);
         DataBufferByte dbb = new DataBufferByte(imageData,len);
         Raster raster = RasterFactory.createWritableRaster(sm,dbb,new Point());
         tiledImage.setData(raster);
         PlanarImage image = (PlanarImage)tiledImage;

    Go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn off White on Black.

  • Establishing White Point and Black Point

    Hi,
    How do I Establishing a White Point and a Black Point in Lightroom 1.4.1 and especially in Lightroom 2 Bata?
    Thank You,
    Hersul

    The last post by OP might have closed this thread, but given the relative lack of activity on this and LR2 forums (summertime?) - I'll go a little deeper.
    i White point
    - If your white balance is right from the start, you just use the Exposure slider to set the white point. If not, first set the white balance - that effectively sets a preliminary white point for each channel separately, or, to be more precise, matches the right side of the histogram for each channel - then set the Exposure. So, with the white point you have complete control over the histogram, as well as over each channel.
    i Black point
    - here the situation is different. You can move the left side of the main (composite?) histogram using the Blacks slider, but there's no means for moving channels separately. In theory, with digital capture, there probably should not be need for this, blacks should be always black, so that's OK, but...
    I once had a batch of pics scanned from film. The film was poorly developed so it has some strong brown-magenta cast in the shadows. In Photoshop it was a piece of cake to set the black point by dragging the left ends of each channel to the left edge of the histogram (heck, even Auto Level did a wonderful job). In Lightroom, there's just no way you can correct this, because you can't control the channels separately.

  • Setting black and white points

    Dear friends,
    I am shooting some pics with a "Whibal like" target card which has a white, black and 18% neutral grey shades.
    In Camera Raw I I can easily correct the white balance with the provided eyedropper on the top row by clicking on the grey target.
    I cannot find any way to set the black and the white points though and have to resort doing that for EACH picture in Photoshop via a levels or a curves adjustment layers.
    It would be great to be able to set those in Bridge/Camera Raw so that I can then copy those settings to other similar shots.
    Any ideas ? Thank you
    Marco

    I am having the same problem, although its now Camera Raw 7 - where can you set the white, mid, and black points in Camera Raw with the eyedropper tool. It seems you have to create a new psd file in Photoshop to do this, which does not make much sense since it is a basic levels adjustment. I am batch editing a bunch of CR2 files, and I just need to select the black, mid and white points on a grayscale that I've shot in the images - is there a way to do this in Camera Raw 7? Thanks!!

  • 2 ?s - Can't view photos on plasma - tv shows only show in black/white

    I connected my 60GB iPod to my 60" Pioneer Elite Plasma television. Photos will not come up. I turned "TV on" and no photos appear. Any suggestions?
    The other issue I am having is watching a TV show on the Plasma. I downloaded LOST and was able to enlarge it to fit the 60", but it only appears in black & white and with purple lines in it. I tried changing from NTSC to Pal and this did not work. Any suggestions???
    Fujitsu   Windows XP

    Make sure your connecting to the right input or Composite input to your TV; Not Component R,G,B input.
    Try direct connection to TV without looping thru any other equipment for this test!
    After that if you still have video problems use a different set of A/V cables, as the ones your using could be damaged.!
    Do the checks and then post results..!

  • Why is some of my iTunes artwork showing up as black and white?

    I have already posted this issue here (Reddit) but I guess I'll make a post here too.
    I'm having a major problem with iTunes on Windows 7 (64 bit), where my iTunes artwork is showing up as black and white, and videos play with a majorly distorted output. (http://imgur.com/TQXA9OH)
    No idea how to fix this, but if I copy paste artwork in from somewhere else, it works fine, however if I download album artowrk using iTunes' built in feature that automatically does it, 75% of the time the album artwork turns out black and white. What's even stranger is that on my iPhone the artwork is fine, but on my iPod Classic it shows up as black and white too. Videos play fine on both devices, but are still distorted in iTunes.
    Can anyone help me fix this? I'm running the newest version of iTunes.

    In your sync boxes for TV shows have you checked the box for remove after viewing and/or don't sync after viewing?

  • White point / black point

    Just like with Photoshop's Levels and Curves I would like to see a White point and Black point setting ability.

    I'm aware of that, but I find that many times it's an easy way (in PS) to determine what I really want to be white (the white of an eye, for instance), at least as a starting point. Using the LR exposure slider to do so is less convenient and doesn't give me that instant and exact control.
    Since I am very often using black as a background, it would be convenient to pinpoint that as black.
    And now we're into it: why just not call the LR selector what it really is: a Neutral selector? Its shifts colors to neutral grey like in PS.
    B.T.W.: I also often use a neutral grey background (18% reflection) and that's where the "White balance selector" is of a very great help.
