  • Question-MDM or DRM

Forgive my ignorance, but is MDM known as DRM in 11.1.1.4??
I have an MDM 9.2.0.0 installed on a hyperion 11.1.1.3 environment and works without any issues. Will it work for 11.1.1.4 too ?
Also, Can you let me know about the procedure to be followed for migration.. The documentation on the Oracle website seems rather vague.

It's essentially the same thing. As of 9.3.1 (If I remember correctly), they changed the branding from MDM to DRM. What you will notice also is that, as of v 11, they moved completely from a "console" model to a web model, i.e., no more client install, but everything is available from a web front end.

  • When to use MDM

    Hi! All,
1.I am in  a doubt when to use MDM? If I am having R/3 at all my centres, Do I still need MDM?
2.Is MDM only meant for integrating different ERP Packages?

    Hi Atul,
Regarding your first question, you may visit the link https://websmp201.sap-ag.de/instguidesnw04 and then goto Planning-> SAP MDM -> MDM 5.5 SP03 Scenario description guides. Here you will find the scenarios that can be achieved using SAP MDM.
For second question, MDM apart from ERP integration can also be used for Rich product content management along with all the other scenarios as discussed in the above document.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Pooja

  • MDM - Support Package and Enhancement Package

    Hi Team,
Wondering, if do we have SP & Ehp applicable for MDM?
If available what's the latest SP & Ehp available for MDM 5.5?
And if any URL relevant to this topic is much appriciated.

  • MDM iView resultset problem and question about eventing

    Hi experts,
I created a MDM iView resultset for my main table as search table (comparison is not supported). When I click on preview I get an empty table ("Found <Tablename>: 0 of 10", table contains 10 entries at the moment). I tried the same with a subtable and everything works fine (all entries have been in the preview table). Any ideas why I don't get a result?
My 2nd question: can I choose the parameter name in eventing (EPCF) on my own? So if I have Vendor_Id as field can I use vendorid as parameter name? Do I have to define anything in the listener iView (e.g. in detail iView for an event from resultset iView)? Maybe you have a useful tutorial link (please not SAP help section)?
    Thanks for your answers.
    Regards, bd

It is possible to retrieve the number of rows from a resultset --
    Statement stmt= con.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE,
                                        ResultSet.CONCUR_READONLY);
    ResultSet rs= stmt.executeQuery("<your select query here>");
    int totalRows;
if (rs.last()) // can it move to the last row?
       totalRows= rs.getRow(); // get its row number
    else
totalRows= 0; // no rows in the resultset
rs.first() // set the cursor back to the startNote that the resultset has to be scrollable (TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE).

  • MDM 5.5 SP6 install and post-install config - SLDREG related question

    Hello,
I've just installed MDM 5.5 SP6 on Oracle/Solaris and have the server running with no problems, repositories loaded, etc. I do receive the following error in the MDM Console which I understand to mean the sldreg utitlity cannot be found.
Error: Unable to register server in System Landscape Directory: Call to SLDREG Utility in /usr/sap/sldreg failed, Error = 0x100.
Set proper value for parameter 'SLDReg Utility Path' in server configuration file.
If you are not using SLD, set parameter 'SLD Registration' to false in server configuration file so that the server does not try to register with SLD. This will avoid this error in the future.
    My questions are:
    1. should there be an ABAP install on the same box which would create the file structure referenced above?
    2. or can this parameter be set to look at a different /usr/sap directory?
    3. Or can I just drop that utility in that directory ?
In other words, is there a recommendation to install an ABAP instance, thereby creating the referenced file structure on the same server as the MDM/Oracle instance? Or is there a workaround approach for this error.
Thanks in advance for your help

  • Some important questions on MDM functionality

    Hello All,
I have some basic/imp questions to be understood on MDM 7.1 for a data consolidation project.
    1) When importing records in import manager, some of the records are failed with this error message "Import failed. Unable to find value map index". When checked the records in excel source, those records are having one or two fields carrying some square like char, ? and some non readable char (chinese, japanese). SAP is the source and SAP CRM has those characters successfully maintained in the system but MDM has some issue. How do we tackle these in MDM to successfully import those records?
    2) How do we archive a repository to create a new one which needs to have empty records in main table but need to carry look up table records?
    3) There are some records attached to workflow and when deleted those records from data manager, system throwing error "attached to workflow". Can anyone help me how to remove this attachment and delete those records?
    4)  The max number of records which can be imported at one shot in import manager is 100K? What happens when we exceed this records let's say 200K? Does the process go infinite loop? Is there a way out to import more than 100K records at one shot?
    5) What are the different types of data consolidation projects MDM Gurus encounter? Elaborate please.
    6) How many clients use Hierarchy, taxonomy, family tables for repository design? Is it very common or rare? And what would be some of the reference  use cases (articles) I could find in sdn blogs for these?
Thx and appreciate for responding to these and also please let me know if any additional articles around MDM which are very popular and must see for a MDM consultant.
    -Mike

    1) When importing records in import manager, some of the records are failed with this error message "Import failed. Unable to find value map index". When checked the records in excel source, those records are having one or two fields carrying some square like char, ? and some non readable char (chinese, japanese). SAP is the source and SAP CRM has those characters successfully maintained in the system but MDM has some issue. How do we tackle these in MDM to successfully import those records?
Thats a known issue in MDM 5.5 but i am not sure about the current 7.1 SP08 release it might by fixed too, MDM Import manager does not support some special characters, only solution is to identify those records which has special characters in excel and exclude them from the load, may by unmapping the field which has special characters and load the other fields data using the map. and then login to Data manager and copy the text to the corresponding record  manually.
    2) How do we archive a repository to create a new one which needs to have empty records in main table but need to carry look up table records?
We can not create a repository from an archive with out main table data automatically. you need to clean the main table manually or by using an import map we can delete the data.
Check the below link for deleting data from a main table through import manager:
    http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/d0245870-0adf-2b10-46a8-ca9dcf8e1a4d?QuickLink=index&overridelayout=true
    3) There are some records attached to workflow and when deleted those records from data manager, system throwing error "attached to workflow". Can anyone help me how to remove this attachment and delete those records?
Click on workflows tab in data manager and you can find in which workflow the record is and check the history by right clicking on the record. if you have rights to stop the workflow do that , or else login with the workflow owner and stop the workflow so that record will come out of the workflow and will be able to be delete that record.
    4) The max number of records which can be imported at one shot in import manager is 100K? What happens when we exceed this records let's say 200K? Does the process go infinite loop? Is there a way out to import more than 100K records at one shot?
Importing 100K data in one shot is not a good idea, and the system will go in infinte loop. you need to split the source files in to multiple chunks. chunk size in your system will be set in MDS.INI file, talk to your MDM Basis guy he will help you in getting details of those..
    5) What are the different types of data consolidation projects MDM Gurus encounter? Elaborate please.
Let us know which kind of consolidation project you are working in, Tricks will be based on the particular requirement
    6) How many clients use Hierarchy, taxonomy, family tables for repository design? Is it very common or rare? And what would be some of the reference use cases (articles) I could find in sdn blogs for these?
Again for this question it will be based on the requirements... i am sure you will be able to find blogs how to use hierarchies, taxanomies and family tables but not the client names...
    Hope i answered your questions.
    regards

  • Few questions on MDM

    Hi,
Iam new in MDM have some questions can anyone do clarify the same,
    1.     How the User can validate the records before importing to import manager. We need to have a list of items which are skipped or created other than summary. Now we have only summary?
    2.     How to identify from which client the data is getting imported?
    3.     Is there an option of merging fields in batch?
    4.     How to trace which data is merged? Is it legacy or R/3?
    5.     How does user
    Thanks,
    Suresh

    Hi, Suresh,
    2. When you launch Import Manger you specify Remote System that you import data from. Also if table you are importing into has 'Key mapping' enabled, then you can map remote key and as a result you will find that just uploaded records have entries in key mapping table that point to the local system you imported data from.
    3. If you mean merging records (not fields) in batch then you can do it when you import records by defining Matching Fields at Matching Records tab of Import Manager. This fields or field combinations will be used to identify records to be merged.
If for example there are 2 incoming records and 1 record in repository table with same value of field "ID" chosen as Matching Field, then finally you will get only 1 record, merged of these 3 records.

  • MDM API Password questions...

    Hi Guru's
I have some questions for which i am struggling to get the answeres on how MDM handles passwords using MDM's API's
    1. Is there a COM API for management of MDM users? COM documentation that we have does not mention anything.
    2. To avoid using any server side code, is it possible to remotely call the IF_MDM_ADMIN bapi through the RFC interface?
    Regards
    Vikrant M Kelkar..

Hi! What about using ABAP method "create_user":
    CALL METHOD lr_api->mo_admin->create_user
    EXPORTING
    is_user_information = ls_user
    IMPORTING
    ev_new_user_id = lv_new_user.
ls_user holds user name and passw.
    Refer to ABAP MDM API

  • MDM 5.5 related questions

    Dear Roman,
We have been reading all of your blogs and articles on SDN.
We have many questions related to SAP MDM 5.5, few of which are listed below:
Q1.  Whether cross compatibility for different ERPs will be provided or not? (for Siebel, PeopleSoft etc)
In case of MDM 3.0, it was supposed to be developed on Project Basis.
[Rytov, Roman] Since MDM is an SAP's product I don't know (and don't think) any transformation vehicle will be provided for 3-d party products out of the box. On the other hand, anyone can get all necessary knowledge to bring external data into MDM and back. I've been working with several customers placing MDM as a data hub (a scenario that for some reason hasn't gotten a separate bullet in the MDM scenarios diagram but widely adopted by customers). So you can bring data from external systems to MDM (by either the APIs or with help of the ImportManager) and distribute it back to the same (or other) systems leveraging the Syndicator or the APIs again.
[Satyen] With the help of APIs/ Import manager, we can get the data from external systems into the SAP MDM but then <b>we need to have functional knowledge</b> to do mapping manually between MDM business objects and different business objects as Material from CRM, Business Partner from CRM, Business partner Relationships from CRM. In one of the blogs by Kevin Isaacson , it’s mentioned that SAP MDM is packaged with predefined repository and import maps for the supported objects like material, vendor, customer.
         1. So what’s the exact scenario for cross-client support? Do these import maps provided by SAP support external systems like PeopleSoft, Siebel?
         2. In the SAP MDM 5.5 Import Manager document provided by SAP, it’s not talking about client connectivity but only about how import can be done? Where can we find this information?
         3. Is XI completely removed from IT scenarios? If yes, then how is it going to take care of data transfer with different data sources?
         4. Can you please elaborate more about DATA HUB scenario? I believe, Oracle is also coming with similar technology to SAP MDM which supports only Central Master Data Management scenario. In Oracle terminology, they call it Central Data Hub (CDH).
Q2.  Can we build a legacy system on top of Central Repository? If yes, how? Is Reverse Engineering possible?
[Rytov, Roman] I'm not sure I understood the question but you may probably treat your MDM system similar to a RDBMS with an additional intelligent layer. In this light you can build on top of MDM whatever you want by using either the APIs only or by leveraging the ImportManager and the Syndicator. I tell you that one of the customers that uses MDM as a data hub at the same time in another MDM repository stores exceptions and other technical messages occurring during integration workflow with external systems. So they have a workflow module which uses MDM as a persistence (MDM itself) and a presentation layer (the client) for managing exception handling. Only your fantasy and the common sense limit applicability of MDM.
[Satyen]  I understand that by using APIs, we can access the underlying RDBMS tables of MDM repository but then
           1. how can we link the complex relationships maintained between Main Table & various Lookup tables, main table & special tables?
           2. I believe the data in the MDM repository is maintained in a very complex way (Delimiter separated) and is manipulated on the fly by the C++ code using pointers & rich/efficient string operations. So how can we access it directly and make use of data from the repository?
           3. In case of WorkFlow module, since it is quite independent of Main table and lookup table linkages, we can make use of it for persistence but then for other modules, it must be quite complex thing to do so.
Q3.  Will there be separate repositories for IT scenarios, GDS & Catalog publishing?
[Rytov, Roman] GDS is a separate application although built upon MDM. It has its own repository which can be accessed from the client. I don't know if there are any limitation on such concurrent usage. I have to check it and will come back to you.
[Satyen] We attended the Webinar hosted by Klaus David on GDS 1.0, as per that GDS maintains it’s own repository which can co-exist along with MDM repository on the same DBMS server but then in MDME, which mainly covers business scenarios only, does not really talk about Master Data harmonization, central master data management.
         1. If it is the case, then don’t you think it’ll be duplication of efforts for maintaining various repositories for GDS, MDME & IT scenarios?
Can we have an illustrated difference between Qualified field, Qualifiers, Product families & Data Groups?
[Rytov, Roman] It's a big topic but in a few words the answer is: Qualified fields and qualifiers are means and tools of qualifier lookup tables. I'm writing now a set of articles talking about it and update you when it's ready. Product families are similar to virtual taxonomy. So you create an additional level of your taxonomy but virtually, choosing attributes to classify it. No additional branches are created. Data group is just an hierarchical structure for storing binary objects (PDF, TextBlocs, Images and others). It helps organize not structured binary data and link it later to your catalog's objects.
[Satyen] We understood about the product group.
         1. Can you provide the exact definition of Qualifier? Whether is it a part of Main table or Qualified Lookup table?
         2. What’s the exact difference between Sub-category and Product family? As per SAP document, the product family is a kind of taxonomy with some common Fields AND/OR Attributes. Can you provide some example about it?
How data is harmonized in SAP MDM 5.5? What is the difference between Syndicator, GDS & SCM?
    (Don't they have overlapping functionality?)
[Rytov, Roman]  Let's see. The Syndicator is a tool opposite to the ImportManger - to export data from MDM to flat or XML file (currently implemented formats). GDS is an application for retail market built upon MDM. SCM - isn't it a SAP-based (ABAP) application? I'm not from the ABAP world so I don't know it. But there are few SAPBased applications having master-data module built in. Depending on business needs and technical requirements such modules can keep on serving their roles with or without integration with an external MDM. I'm trying to say again that there are no predefined MDM scenarios and some customer may wish use it as a central point of truth but others as a cleansing gate or a translator hub. An architect team should understand capability and cost of every module and in every concrete case make appropriate decisions.
[Satyen] According to the SAP documents, we can use Syndicator to syndicate data with UCCNet, Transora (both of which are now going to merge).
         1. If it’s the case then why GDS is separately required in whole MDM scenario? Is it not overlapping the functionality of each other? Then how GDS can become a separate Business Scenario for SAP MDM 5.5?
Let me ask you a few questions. Did you take the basic standard 4-day course about MDM5.5? It's mandatory to kick off MDM learning and understanding.
[Satyen] Now in second week of August, we are going to attend the 5 days workshop conducted by SAP at Bangalore, India which can help us in understanding SAP MDM 5.5 in a much better way!
To understand how MDM fits to a system landscape I advise you to listen to my e-Book if you haven't yet found it:
https://www.sdn.sap.com/sdn/url.sdn?res=/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.sdn.wcm.compound.docs/library/events/webinars/mdme in your it landscape/mdme 5.5 in your it landscape
[Satyen] Thanks for providing the URL. It’s really useful! Is there any way by which we can download this presentation with audio?
We're developing a 2-day workshop for advancing MDM data modeling which will mostly be comprised of hands-on experience and brainstorming discussions. It's planned somewhere in October but for now it's not clear when and where it will be given.
[Satyen] It’s definitely going to be very helpful to everyone as in SAP MDM 5.5, you can design the repository in various ways. So these discussions/brain storming sessions will be really useful to everyone. Please let us also know about it.
    Good luck with MDM!
[Satyen] Once again thanks for everything!!
    Roman
    Thanks in advance.

  • Question on MDM 2.1 security.

    Hi All,
We are trying to configure MDM 2.1 for our project and we have a question about security.
One of our goal is to flter data according to a particular user. For instance, we have a group of users that will be able to see only their own data (so their own interval data, MC, etc). So we need to filter data at the database level.
Do you know if it is possible to do this in MDM 2.1 ?
    Many thanks.

It sounds like you're attempting to pass Local EJB objects over a Remote interface, which is not permitted. EJBLocalObjects can not be passed outside the ejb tier. You'll need to either pull their data out into data access object classes (basically structs) or return EJBObjects.

I have a Question on CC&B 2.3 Out Of Box BI batch jobs: SP/Meter Extract batch jobs are in MDM OTB but we are not sending a specific SP Type to MDM as it is and Item based SP. How do I extract that info from CC&B without a lot of Custom.

    Any luck with this?

  • A few questions about SAP MDM

    hi,
my company is preparing now to implement system for corporate reporting. I am wondering if MDM would be useful for this. Reporting tool will be SAP BW.
I have read some documentation on help.sap.com and have some queations:
    1. I saw paragraph 'Master Data Objects' and there was only a few objects. Does it mean that MDM supports integration and management of only those objects listed there? Or I can use MDM to map any other master data like e.g. 'product groups' ?
    2. Does MDM have its own data repositories or only provides mechanisms to match MD from various systems and sends it back to its clients (or SAP BW)?
    3. Does MDM distribute data in XML format or in other way e.g. IDOCs?
    Thanks,
    Andrzej

You ask very fundamental questions and I'm afraid my answers will lead to more confusions. But to ask is the only way:-)

MDM can supports any business objects you model in MDM. The ones you mentioned are coming with ready repository and XI mapping but you're not confined to use only them.

Yes, MDM has its own repository and even to match MD from various systems you have to import it to MDM before.
    > 3. Does MDM distribute data in XML format or in other
    > way e.g. IDOCs?
XML and plain text are currently available formats for output and XML and all supported DB's native formats are available for importing.
I advise you to read materials from the MDM page on SDN and for MDM scenarios see my last article (not published yet):https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/library/mdm/mdm - many different models, part one.pdf

  • Some question about mdm java api and portal content

    Hi Gurus,
I am new to MDM. I am going to develop some web dynpro application using mdm java api.
My question is regarding the relationship between MDM version and NW version:
    for example
1.MDM5.5 JAVA api can be deployed to CE 7.11 server?
2.MDM7.1 JAVA API can be deployed to CE 7.11 server? or can only be deployed to CE server.
the same question for the MDM portal content.
the possible dev environment  for our company would be:
    1.MDM7.1
2.CE7.2(do we need another EP7 server for the UWL?)
    Best regards,
    John

    Hi,
I am using Portal 7.0. MDM version is 7.1.
My problem is ... i am trying to connect WebDynpro (JAVA) to MDM7.1. But am unable to do so. I have a WD Frame in which i have a WD iView and the MDM iView. But i am unable to pass parameters from the WD iView to MDM Item Details iView.
    Note:
    1. I have deployed MDM JAVA API on NWDS
    2. I have specified " * " as a parameter to pass from the URL in the Item Details iView.
    Please help.
Every help that i have read talks about CE7.1 but not NW 7.0

  • MDM Question...

I'm a newbie to the MDM and I've a question on it.
As per my understanding, MDM maintains the Master Data at one central repository instead of having them at different places.
Lets say I've three systems SAP and Siebel and one legacy system. And the some master data is in SAP and some in Siebel and some in legacy system.
So, If we have MDM, we would combine all these master data from 3 systems and put that in one place. My question is, even after putting the data in MDM, still are we gonna have master data in those applications? or We dont maintain the master data in those systems anymore?
If its going to be only in MDM, then for each transaction in SAP or siebel or legacy system, it has to get the Master data from MDM before creating transactional data. Is it not a network overhead and doesnt it slowdown creating the transactions?
If its also going to be in the systems even after MDM implementation then what advantage we get from using MDM?
Any thoughts and/or real time experiences?
    Thanks,
    Angela

    Hi Angela,
The answer to your question will strongly depend on the IT policy of the corporation where MDM is being implemented:
The idea in MDM is not necessarily to have your complete master data stored and maintained in one single system.
The best way to get a feeling about added value of MDM is described by the words of an old professor I had at university: "The important is not to have every bit of information in a single place,... but rather to know
where it is!" and I would personally add "how accurate
    it is!".
There are actually three main strategies in data unification. The use of one or the other will depend mainly on the corporate practices for IT where MDM is being implemented.
Master data harmonization: here the master data is copied from each client system into MDM. A matching needed in order to identify duplicates, and build the MDM translation tables that will allow to know where the data is, and which records correspond to the same real "object" in your different systems (Key Mapping Tables). In that case each single system just works as before, and the added value of MDM is that you know EXACTLY where you data is, and how many "real objects" you have across your systems.
Master data consolidation: is one step further... here you perform first a harmonization (as above), consolidate the entries on global fields, and re-distribute the data to the original systems. In that scenario NO DATA is created in MDM. The added value is related to the fact that data will be consistent across the corporation. You may imagine that the difficulty here is to figure out which information should "win" in conflict cases. Here you need a good cleansing tool, with relevant matching strategies.
Central master data management: is the final leap. Here you go again one step further, and you start creating centrally data in MDM, and distribute it to the different client systems.
What we actually see is that customers that are very much worried with the question "who is the master of the data?" will tend to implement the first two scenarios. Customers with very centralized policies will tend to look for the third scenario.
    Hope that helps,
    warm regards jc
