Question re iMovie11 at 60fps

My Canon camera takes 1080p video at 60 fps.  iMovie11 seems to accommodate only 24 and 30 fps.  How do I solve this problem?

Hi
iMovie - can not use p60 or p50 material
I would try to convert it to i60 or i50 by use of (never had any such material to test - yet)
• MPEG Streamclip - or -
• JES_Deinterlacer
• Flip4Mac
(or Compressor from Apple)
FinalCut Pro X - Can use p60 or p50 as is.

  • Unhappy with final product - bringing my questions/issues to one thread

I have been trying to get what I consider an acceptable DVD from my new Mac. I have started a couple of threads and posted in a couple of others, but I figured it was better to bring all my questions/problems to one thread. I'm going to try to give all the information that I can think of, in hopes that yall can help me.
    I have iMovie11, iDVD7.1, Toast 8 Titanium, and Final Cut Express4.0.1.
At this time, the video I'm working with came from a Flip Ultra HD (the 30fps version, not the newer one that does HD at 60fps).
I have edited an 18 minute project, and created numerous versions of it, which I then burned to DVD with Toast. The final product on each disk all look pretty much the same to me, with the one problem that is making me go nuts --- the video playback does not appear "smooth". It looks like it is playing back at less than 30 frames per second.
I don't expect perfect video quality from the Flip camera - actually the video is acceptably clean and sharp (for me) - it's the frame rate thing that is killing me. In the past I have burned numerous DVDs from MiniDV through Sony Vegas that play back perfectly.
As of tonight, I have discovered that I apparently chose the wrong "easy setup" for FCE, it was on DV-NTSC, and I think I have found that it should have been on HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30 - although I might be wrong about that as well.
I did not do any kind of conversion to the Flip videos before working with them in FCE - don't know if this would be part of my problem.
In my trying various setting for the export, I have found "Key Frames Every xxx" with a default at 24 - don't know what this is or if it is related to my problem.
I don't mind re-editing the entire project if there is something I can do that will make this better, or if this is as good as it is going to get with this source video.
Also - I've noticed that anytime I add or make any changes to a transition, I have to re-render that section. Is this normal, or is it because I'm using video straight from the Flip (without MPEG Streamclip'ing) it first, or some other reason - maybe related to my wrong easy setup choice?
Please let me know if there is other information I can provide that might help you help me. I can see that I will love working with Final Cut Express and playing with all that it can do once I figure out how to set the export settings like they should be.

All the source video is converted, new project started with correct easy setup, corrected clips imported - the video looks awesome in FCE preview.
I notice that it still requires a re-render where titles are added from Live Type - is that normal or did I have something wrong with the items coming from Live Type?
I also exported a short video 2 different ways:
export - quick time movie - self contained.... This one has a very subtle jump just before and after each transition that I don't see in FCE while editing, it's only in the completed version
    and....
    export - using qt conversion
    format - quicktime movie
    options - compression h.264
    quality - high
    key frame rate - 24
    frame reordering - yes
    encoding mode - multi-pass
    dimensions - compressor native 1280x720
This one does not have the jump before and after transitions, but from what I read earlier in this thread, I should be able to just use the "export - qt movie - self contained" - correct?

  • Switching from FCP7 to CS6! Two BIG questions I can't figure out...

    Hello!
So I'm running CS6.01 on my new 27" iMac running OS 10.6.8. I'm excited to be transitioning over to CS6 after the last 6 or 7 years using Final Cut Pro. But I don't have time to mess around as I'm in the middle of projects so here are my 2 main questions right off the bat:
First I should say that I edit AVCHD footage shot from Panasonic HMC150's. I shoot Weddings. About 35-40/year. In FCP, my workflow was...shoot EVERYTHING at 720p60 and TRANSCODE it in FCP to ProRes Proxy. Then I'd CONFORM it to 23.98 (using Cinema Tools which takes all of about 30 seconds to do 400 clips) so that it was all in slow-mo looking smooth and beautiful. Then, I'd drop it all on the timeline and edit. Most clips I need in slow-mo but the ones I don't (eg. the Ceremony) I just speed up 250% and it's full speed. Then at the end of editing I'd batch capture and re-transcode to ProRes 422 and I'm done. It all looks great.
    Here's the important thing:
I edit on a 23.98fps timeline that way it maintains a bit of the film-stuttery look instead of the video/soap-opera look of 60fps footage and also it naturally has everything at 40% smooth slow-mo. I dont want that video/soap opera look that I would get if I edited my 60p footage on a 60p timeline! This is important to me.
    1) I know with CS6 I don't "have" to transcode, but I can just ingest and edit the AVCHD files natively, right? Well, okay, but if I do that will dropping those 60p clips on a 23.98fps timeline give me the same look I got when I use to conform the footage first? Specifically is it just as smooth to just change the speed of a 60p clip by 40% and drop it on a 24p timeline? And what about the stuff I want at full speed...if I drop that 60p footage right on the timeline and don't speed it up it will be full speed but will it look the same as my conformed footage looked when sped up in FCP? Please elaborate for me.
    2) Audio. When I bring in audio clips from my 2 cameras each track has 2 separate audio feeds (eg. 2 wireless mics, a shotgun mic, an internal mic). CS6 brings them in on one track. I read up where I need to "Modify the clips" and adjust the Audio Channels so that there are 2 tracks. Then I'm guessing I just make one track the left track and one the right? This seems to work and makes a separate track that is balanced to the center and has each of the 4 channels as its own separate adjustable track. Am I doing that right? And more importantly...my real question...if I'm scrubbing thru the timeline and I double click on one of the audio tracks to bring up the waveform and edit, sometimes it doesn't come up where I stopped in the timeline. Unless the clips are linked. But don't I have to unlink them to edit them individually? So how do I do this where I can be in the timeline, watching the video and when I hear something I want to adjust, I stop the video and quickly access the individual track (eg. one of the wireless mics) to make the adjustments?
Hope my questions make sense. Thanks SO much in advance for all your help! It took me like 20 minutes to figure out how to post a question but now that I've done it I'm very excited that I've got it out there and hopefully I'll get past my current workflow roadblocks. Thank you!!!!!!!

    Jim Simon wrote:
I'd recommend a different work flow.  Shoot what you want at full speed in 720p/24.  Shoot what you want in slow motion at 720p/60...
I would respectfully disagree with Jim's statement and endorse the OP's technique of shooting at 60 fps for purposes of playback at both normal speed and slow motion at 24 fps.
I think the more creative choices you give yourself in post the better.
Since you (DMH79) are using the same footage for both normal speed and slow motion playback, I think your way is definitely the way to go as long as you are happy with the resolution.
Even if you were not using the same clips at different speeds, I would still disagree with the opinion that you should be able to predict in advance which shots from a hectic live action event such as a wedding you will want to use in slow motion. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it would be impossible, no matter how easy it is to switch modes.
Given that slow motion is a reasonable priority for you, I think there is much less to be gained by shooting at 24 fps for clips that you might use at normal speed than by giving yourself the option of both normal speed and slow motion with a 60 fps recording. (To me the bigger tradeoff is not being able to shoot 1080p at 60 fps, which I think applies to your HMC150.)
I love the look of 24p and will shoot that way for scripted work or if I am absolutely certain that I won't want to use a single shot in slow motion, but for many live events, my preference is to shoot at 720p60, shutter angle 180, for eventual output at 30 fps. I edit in a 60 fps timeline in Premiere, but I export at 30 fps. I find that exporting at 30 fps in combination with the 1/120 shutter speed removes much of the soap opera look (a great description, by the way), but there is no jerkiness in normal speed clips because 30 is exactly half of 60. Media Encoder simply removes every other frame during export. Yet, this allows me to drop any clip to 50% speed and achieve perfectly matched, silky smooth slow motion.
You probably prefer the 40% speed slow motion and added stutter of 24 fps, but regardless, if you do find that controlling the speed via Speed/Duration is equal in quality to conforming, you may want to consider cutting in a 60 fps timeline and giving yourself the option to export at either 24 or 30 fps.
Your last post on this topic was from a few months ago. I also switched from FCP7 and would be very curious to know what you have discovered!

  • How to combine (720p 60fps) with (1080p 30fps)

    hi all
I have adobe premiere pro CS5 and a gopro hero HD2
So my question is : How can i edit one single movie coming from footages shot with different qualities, like 1080 at 30 fps and 720 at 60 fps ?, what kind of sequence should i open at first on the software?
The thing is: I can do it, there is no problem in that but as I want the best quality I want to know exactly what to do. Like if I open a sequence of 720p and 30 fps and then import footages at 720p and 60fps is it gonna turn it into 30 fps?
Other question: If my footage is a 720p, what is gonna happen when I export it at 1080? I'm gonna loose some quality right??
    thanks

Other question: If my footage is a 720p, what is gonna happen when I export it at 1080? I'm gonna loose some quality right??
Some is an understatement. Better downscale 1080 to 720. Always much better than upscaling. As to the framerate, with some 30P and some 60P, you will be better off with 30P altogether.

  • Premiere Pro CC, Project / sequence settings help with GoPro 1080p / 60fps

    Hi all,
I have just started using Premiere Pro CC with the GoPro Hero3+ black edition, but my video's, once exported do not look very smooth and clean like HD video should?
The video settings on the GoPro are 1080p / 60fps, narrow view (protune off), I then import these .MP4 video files into PP CC and use these sequence settings:
    29.97fps
    1920 x 1080 / 16:9
    Square pixels (1.0)
    No fields (progressive scan)
    30 fps drop-frame timecode
Preview file format: I-Frame only MPEG
    Maximum bit depth
So, my question is, should my sequence settings be at 60fps to match the 60fps I used to capture the video with? How should I edit 1080p / 60fps video in order to get nice clean, smooth HD video playback on youtube?
    My export settings are:
    H.264
    1920 x 1080
    29.94
    Progressive
    Square pixels (1.0)
    NTSC
    Profile: Main
    Level: 5.1
    Render at maximum depth
    VBR, 2 pass
    Target Mbps: 40
    Max Mbps: 50
Keyframe distance box checked and says: 90
    Use maximum render quality
Here is the video I uploaded to youtube: Deal Tri Summer Duathlon May 2014 - YouTube
    What do you think?
Any help would be very much appreciated!
    Kind regards,
    Paul

No problem. When you click sequence > sequence settings, what does your editing mode say? I use AVCHD 1080p square pixel. You can change this to 'custom' which will give you more control over the settings if you need to, but if you use the method I described earlier then you shouldn't need to change anything. Maybe if some of your videos are 2.7k or 4k resolution mixed with 1080p videos then you could play with the settings.
Just remember that if you start a new project and have for example, four videos shot at 1080p and one at 4k, if you drag and drop the 4k video to the 'new item' bin then your sequence will match the 4k resolution settings and when you drag the other 1080p videos on the sequence time line, they will not fill the screen and would need to be 'scaled' in to fit the screen, thus making them look terrible. The best way would be to drag n drop the 1080p video(s) and then include the 4k video on the timeline and just 'scale' / 'crop' it to fit the screen.
    All the best!

  • Video capture w/ built in isight question

    hi video experts,
hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction for something I'd like to try out.. I'm an audio guy so am not up on what's out there on the video side of things....
I was wondering if there's any software that allows you to shoot high framerate video using the built-in isight on say a macbook pro, at something like DV res. I'm thinking at least 60fps but even higher would be great, like say 75fps, triple the framerate up from normal playback at 25. we're looking at shooting some video for a clip, and for the footage we have in mind, the webcam-ey look you get from the isight camera is the sort of look we want. but ideally we were hoping to be able to shoot at high speed (with music playback sped up correspondingly) so when you then play it back at the regular speed you get that realtime yet slow-mo look.
anyway, holding my newbie hat in hand and hoping my question is not too ridiculous, I hope someone can point me in the right direction of some software (shareware, a feature of final cut pro, some obscure quicktime authoring tool, whatever) that can pull off this sort of thing.
    thanks for any pointers,
    regards,
    antonio

    hi IDVD,
i think you are mistaken. the ISight didn't stop working everytime an update was done. What all of us mean was, it simply never work again after the initial update, that has causes the issue.
Mine stop working 2 months after i got my mac, it stop all by sudden, and it was only after going thru tons of threads, in this forum, that I realize the problem occur after a MAC update..
you have any solution for any one here, on how to get it back, even though it has disappeared from the system profiler? Apple have no clue and they suggest bring in down for repair.. unfortunately, not all have the luxury of parting with their desktop for even a day for repair, as work is crucial.. me for example..
Actually I have already given up on solving the problem, so if you do have a suggestion to resolve this issue, WITHOUT having to bring the comp in. I would be eternally grateful.

  • Current Time expressed in decimals + Keyframing export question

This was noted in an earlier post, but I could not reply since the thread was archived...
I've noticed that certain movies, when viewed in QTPro, express the current time (viewable in the movie info dialog) in decimals, rather than in frames.
For example, using a 30fps movie, a time of one second and 15 frames is instead shown under the current time (viewable in the movie info window) as :01.50 (hundreths of a second). This can be a problem if you are trying to count frames or note a particular time expressed in frames, rather than in fractions of a second.
After digging a bit, I discovered that movies compressed WITHOUT keyframing enabled DID NOT have this trait - the time is shown in frames instead.
The workaround is to export the movies from QTPro using a codec that does not support keyframes (for example - the Uncompressed codec).
    I have two questions -
    1. Why, when exporting a movie with keyframes on, does the video track frame rate end up with a value that goes to multiple decimal points? - For example:
    - Export a movie from QTPro using the animation compressor and a frame rate of 30. Set Keyframes to anything you like (note that you cannot turn it off).
    - View the exported movie, and press cmd-J (movie properties). The frame rate shown will likely be something like 29.3293293820932, and the current time (as shown in movie info (cmd-i)) will be in decimals.
If you export Uncompressed 30fps instead (keyframes are not supported in this codec), the resulting frame rate will be exactly 30, and the current time will be shown as FRAMES, not decimals.
    2. WHY is it possible to render a Quicktime movie from After Effects, using ANY codec, and have the ability to turn keyframes OFF, whilst turning keyframes off seems to be impossible in QTPro when exporting a movie using a codec that supports keyframes?
    Thanks for any help!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

No - there's no variable frame rate - depending on the project, we're either using 29.97, 30 or 60fps.
We're using the "Current Time" in the movie info dialog so that people can make precise timing notes regarding animations without having to get to a machine with FCP, After Effects et.al. on it. Since we're concerned with getting exact frame numbers, we're using the Movie Info dialog rather than the time provided in the movie window.
Practically every movie we're using is coming from After Effects, Shake, or some other animation/compositing program.
The only times I've gotten those long-decimal frame rates is on a movie with keyframes set. Turn off keyframes, and the movie frame rate is exactly what we set it to be.
I'm guessing that we're bumping into something that's actually a cool trick - when Quicktime sees that a movie has a traditional frame rate (30, 60 or even 29.97 for example), it displays the current time in frames. When it loads a movie with an odd frame rate (particularly something like 29.9630843098) it calculates and displays in thousanths of a second instead.
Nonetheless, we're setting all the movies to a defined frame rate. The movies exported without keyframes end up with the correct rate, and the ones with keyframes end up with a frame rate that have many decimal places....

  • Export is jumpy (60fps issue?)

I am new to Final Cut Pro X. I bought it yesterday, previously only using iMovie for editing so excuse any obvious errors!
I will describe my process exactly as I did it to give as much info possible.
My video sample I'm using is from a GoPro HD. Recorded at 720p, 60fps and is about 4seconds long. The raw video plays very smooth in Quicktime.
I created a new 30fps project, and imported the clip to the library.
I then dragged the whole clip onto the timeline..... At this stage, a dialogue pops up telling me that the video properties are not recognised and to select the video properties. 720p, 1280 x 720 and 59.94fps are pre selected. I change the fps to 29.97.
With the video in the timeline I "rate conform" to stretch slow the speed to 30fps. Keeping all the frames and slowing the clip down for a smooth slow mo.
Now, when I export this, the exported video is "jumpy". It seems to skip frames every now and again.
I have also tried it on a 60fps project, putting the clip on the timeline with the fps left at 59.94 with no rate conforming and everytime the result is the same jumpy export.
I have tried exporting with "current settings", various prores and h.264
Am I doing something wrong? I have read online that previous versions of FCP do not like 60fps video but it doesn't seem to be an issue in terms of importing and working on the clips, only when I export.
Should I convert the clips before importing? What with?
Something of note, in the clip properties within fcpx it is showing the frame rate as 59.92. Bit bizarre. Is this standard?
Anyway, sorry for all the questions. Hope someone can lend a hand.
    Cheers
    Fraser

    Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me.
The video is indeed 59.94 when I inspect it in QT.
I tried again, forcing the project to be 29.97fps and the issue still persists.
Here is the exported video so you can see what I mean. There is no slow motion in this.

  • New Flip minoHD camera at 60fps. Will PE9 preset work?

Flip has recently introduced their new mino HD video camera that has a frame rate of 60fps. The new PE9 has a preset for the Flip minoHD, however this preset is set at 30fps. Will the PE9 preset work with this camera? Are there any special editing issues with video at 60fps that I should know about? If I keep the output resolution to 1280x720 will that help in rendering speed? (Does PE9 support "smart" rendering?). I'm new to video editing so I hope these questions make some sense.

I'm not quite sure of Flip's strategy, going to 60 fps. It's not like the human eye can see the difference between 30 and 60 fps. So it would seem to my limited understanding that you're just creating  a lot of extra video frames!
    Oh well.
Many camcorders use 60i. This is technically not 60 fps, but it's really just 30 integrated frames (each frame composed of two interlaced frames). But this is based on the old TV standard, back when ALL TV video was composed of integrated frames.
The Flip, though, seems to spec out with 60 progressive frames -- or 60 genuine frames per second. Hmm.
Anyway, I'd assume you can use it with one of the existing Flip presets. But I'd sure like to hear the definitive answer for my own personal reference.
As for Smart Rendering -- Technically smart rendering means that the same video goes in as comes out, except when effects are added. So, no, Premiere Elements doesn't do this with Flip video. Though it does seem to edit Flip video natively, which is very different.
Editing video natively means that the program works with the video in its native state, without constant rendering. Native editing is indicated by the fact that, when you add the clip to a timeline in a properly set up project, there will not be a red line above the clips.
Sorry for the long post, but you've asked some very deep questions!

  • Render Settings for Exporting 4k 60fps to Youtube

I have been playing around with my new adobe cc 2014 and i gotta say i love it!
the only problem is when uploading video in 4k to youtube it will only process in 4k if its 30fps max lock or less.
if i upload 4k in 60fps it only goes to 1080p 60fps max. if you use google chrome.
My question is how and what settings have worked for you to upload 4k in 60fps?

Well i have seen many videos in 4k 60fps turns out its something to do with vp9 encoded files. so i encoded one in 4k 60fps and uploaded still only went to 60fps in 1080 and didnt not process up to 4k. so how can i get this done?

  • Help: Canon hf200 .mts file imported as 29.97FPS instead of 60FPS (60i). How to fix?

Hey everyone, first post, and I have a question. I searched and I couldn't find an answer for this.
I'm filming on a canon hf200 (class 4 sdhc card--if that makes any difference). I'm filming at 24Mbps on the 60i setting, but when I import in to Premiere, the footage gets imported at 29.97FPS. For my sequence settings, I'm selecting desktop, then 59.94 FPS (since I could not find an AVCHD setting with 60fps), and the clips are still not imported as 60 (or 59.94) FPS. Am I missing something? Settings not right? Have to convert to get 60FPS? Any help will be appreciated!

    24Mbps on the 60i setting
It's unfortunate that camera makers cause this confusion.  The proper nomenclature is to only list frame rates, never the field rate.  Sometime people violate that convention and mistakenly list the field rate instead, causing this type of confusion.
Your camera should be labeling the mode as 30i, because that's what it is, 30 interlaced frames per second.

  • Another "how to create HD DVDs using iMovie" question

I am able to download my  AVCHD footage from my Sony videocam into imovie11 (on my mac mavericks platform)....and am happy enough with using imovie as an editing program for my project.  And when I am done with my "project" imovie delivers to me a MPEG-4 file. It retains HD content (1920X1080p).
My Sony blu-ray player (BDPs350) will not play this file ...(strangely because it plays everything else)... so my question is what is the best (and lowest cost) way to create an avchd dvd of my project which will play in my Blu-ray player (and not suffer much degradation). My Sony PMB software did a great job in the past, but it is not available for Mac. I am on the verge of buying Toast and "hoping" it will work but their customer service was not reassurring when I talked to them recently. Will Toast 11 do the job?

    Yes and I said that
Roxio Toast - INCLUDING BD-Component can burn to both DVD and if You got a BD-Burner to Blu-Ray disks.
    BUT
DVDs are 4.2-4.7Gb and BD-disks 24Gb (If I remember rigth) - Meaning that You only can put about 20 minutes movie on a SL-DVD.
This BD-DVD - can only be played on Blu-Ray players (no standard DVD-player playback these. Not even Your Mac unless it got a special program that can do this (but to playback true BD-disks a dedicated BD-player is a must)
AND - My BD-DVDs play back greatly on my PlayStation3 - BUT NOT ON some Cheap Samsung BD-players !
    Do not know why.
    I use:
    - Verbatim
    - DVD-R
    - SLOW BURN speed !
And to me Roxio Toast Bundle was great value - especially Spin-doctor - as I have old vinyls and sounding bad - some sounded as brand new after processing in this. (and lot's more - back-conversion of DVDs, file conversion etc)

  • Synching question

    Hi everybody,
I'd like to know, if shooting HD video with a Sony bloggie™ in 720 60p while recording the audio separately on a PC or Mac would be possible to sync the two in PP.
Video would be an MPEG-4 coming directly from the camera, and audio would be a .wav file.
Using Final Cut Express 4 I've encountered some problems: Right after 10 seconds or even less, the audio isn't in sync anymore, with the original audio (the one from the camera) being faster than the wav file recorded from the mic.
I've posted a question on the Apple Discussion page here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2593721&tstart=0
Since that solution involves re-encoding the footage (both audio and video, which makes the already finished MPEG-4 file unusable and creates more work to be done), I wondered if using Premiere Pro I'd have the chance to use the footage as is and adding the audio file without syncing problems.
In plain English: Does Premiere Pro support 60fps and MPEG-4 for editing?
Thank in advance for your help.
    JC

after 10 seconds or even less, the audio isn't in sync anymore
This is a problem with recording audio separately, and will likely happen with any footage.  While camera makers seem to have no trouble making cameras that record sound at the exact correct rate, audio device makers can't seem to get this right, and so the audio will tend to drift out of sync after a while.

  • Varicam slo-mo question

We shot a doc short recently on the Varicam. We shot two ways.
#1. Most of the footage was shot for a 24 fps (23.98) timeline in FCP. But the Varicam ALWAYS records 60fps (59.94), so it fills the 60fps stream with duplicate frames that can be removed during capture. Right?
#2. For slow-motion work, we declared as much to the Varicam, and we assume that it records new information EVERY frame (er, field) in the 60fps stream -- NO DUPLICATE FRAMES. Then in FCP, we use the Frame Rate Converter to process things down to a smooth 24fps. Works beautifully.
So here's the question. What are our options if we decide in post that we actually would like a clip that was shot as #1 above to be slow motion after all? We have 60fps to work with on the tape and we can run the Frame Rate Converter in FCP, but it seems like it shouldn't produce the same results as in #2 because of the duplicate frames. Right?
Or we could attempt to have FCP generate slow motion out of the timeline, but with 24fps source material, we suspect the results will not measure up to those created using #2 above.
Are we correct in assuming that though we have 60fps (with duplicates) on the tapes, we really don't have the same raw materials (60fps, no duplicates) that we would have in #2 above?
Any suggestions other than the obvious -- try both the Frame Rate Converter and slo-mo rendered in FCP and compare the results?
    Thanks,
    Brad

#1 - The Varicam always shoots 60fps...correct. But when you choose the 24p setting, the camera records the footage differently, and flags it as 24p. So when FCP captures it the redundant frames are removed. CORRECT.
#2 - CORRECT...this is how you do it.
What are our options if we decide in post that we actually would like a clip that was shot as #1 above to be slow motion after all?
Well, nothing as elegant as if you shot 60fps. Once flagged as 24p, the frames needed to make great slow motion aren't recorded...only 24frames are recorded. Only APPLE-J is the option, and that is how you normally do slow motion...and no, it isn't pretty. For prettier slow motion, you will have to invest in After Effects and TWIXTOR.
We have 60fps to work with on the tape and we can run the Frame Rate Converter in FCP, but it seems like it shouldn't produce the same results as in #2 because of the duplicate frames. Right?
Right...even though it records 60 frames, the camera really only records 24 frames onto those 60. In fact, because the footage is flagged 24p, the FRC won't even work.
Or we could attempt to have FCP generate slow motion out of the timeline, but with 24fps source material, we suspect the results will not measure up to those created using #2 above.

    correct.

  • Using "848x480, 60fps, .mov" files in FCP

    Here's my scenario:
    Source files:
    .mov
    60fps
    848x480
    Intended use:
I want to slow down these files to 30fps so that they're in slow motion.
    Question:
How can I do this most efficiently?
    Question:
Can I convert these files to slow motion outside of Final Cut Pro to save time and promote efficiency?

Use Cinema Tools to "Conform" them to a new frame rate...
This doesn't alter the picture data (odd dimensions, btw), it simply changes the playback rate setting in the QuickTime movie.
