QuickTime API to get H.264 codec level

Hai All,
Currently I'm working on an application using QuickTime. I have designed the application in such a way as to take level 2.2 for H.264 compression specifying the frame size, frame rate and maximum data rate corresponding to H.264 level 2.2. But what I need to confirm before ICMCompressionSessionCreate () is whether the compression session is using H.264 level 2.2 itself or any other levels.
So my questions are,
1. Is there any specific API to get the level of codec being used?
2. On what basis is the level of codec used is being selected?
3. Whether the level of codec used will affect the performance or quality of the application?
Expecting a reply at the earliest of your convinience,
Thanks and regards,
Abin

handles are the overlap between the outgoing clip and the incoming. if you want a dissolve to start 15 frames before the end of the outgoing clip then the first frame of the incoming clip needs to be at that frame, if you want it to end 15 frames into the incoming clip then the last frame of the outgoing clip needs to be there.
mark an in 15 frames before the join and an out 15 frames after the join, ripple delete, and re-apply the transition.

  • Quicktime 7 pro export h.264 better than iMovie quicktime setting?

Hi, wondering if anybody knows if Quicktime 7 pro will export h.264 files (mp4) with better quality than going thru iMovie 11 and using the Quicktime plugin? The results are ok with iMovie but wondering if Quicktime 7 Pro would export better as a standalone unit? Looking to make super small files from chopped up dvd's that will play on all mobile devices..Been using baseline profile setting in iMovie Quicktime plugin so it plays on iPhone 3g as well..  Thanks everyone!

I am trying to create very small files from a DVD , just simple chopping the DVD up into sections...when I use Handbrake to rip the DVD to a small h.264 (mp4) file the quality is surprisingly good...if I rip a higher quality mp4 to use in iMovie the export to smaller h.264 files don't look nearly as good when trying to get files sizes equivalent to Handbrake...I have tried ripping the highest quality video from DVD to use in iMovie '11 but when trying to export using QuickTime plugin to get h.264 (mp4) files they don't look that good...basically if Handbrake had editing capabilities the chopped up files would look better from there...
You are experiencing a process of diminishing returns by continuously re-compressing the video from less efficient codecs to more efficient/same efficiency codecs at the same or lower data rates which tends to degrade quality with each re-compression. My recommendation would be to purchase the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) and use it with MPEG Streamclip for your work flow. (Note: If you are using Lion, the component installer won't work correctly and you will either have the use the Squared-5 beta utility to install the package or install the codec manually.)
A better work flow would be to load the DVD titles (VOB file data) to MPEG Streamclip and edit the content there in its native MPEG-2/AC3 or MPEG-2/PCM compression format. You can set in/out points the same as using QT 7 Pro and save the segments as separate files using an alpha-numeric filename convention denoting the order in which you later want to merge the segments. Once all segments are saved, just drop all of them simultaneously back to the MPEG Streamclip work window and they will be merged in the proper alpha-numeric order. You can then fix "timecode breaks" and export the final product to your targeted compression format. Since you only re-compress the project once, depending on the codec/settings you use, your final file should approach the quality achieved in HandBrake. I.e., this is the main benefit of editing in the original "native" codec used in the DVD content.

  • Rendering to Quicktime h.264 codec Error

Hey, i keep getting this error when i try to render to Quicktime with the h.264 codec from After Effects CS3. I installed the 8.0.2 update but that didn't work.
The error reads: After Effects error: compressing frame of movie - Quicktime codec error(-8960) (44::39)
It comes up usually at the first few frames. It's not just this particular comp. It doesn't work with any.
    Thanks for your consideration.

It tells you that the CoDec is not compatible with Quicktime. What operating system are you on? What version of QT do you use? Does exporting H.264 work from QT Pro or other apps?

  • QuicktimeKirk H.264 codec help

    Dear QuicktimeKirk,
what settings do you use to clear up your video(quicktime movie)exports using the H.264 codec to clear video?(Iam a old fan of quicktime but Iam new to the codec.)Iam still getting the small pixels and fuzziness on my movie.
Would you recommend your settings on every movie?

I export from the best source available. I use the original source exported directly to .mov or .mp4 using the H.264 video codec.
If the file has already been processed to something (.mov, .mp4 or any MPEG flavor) I first export the file back to DV Stream and use this new file for the H.264 export.
It will not be as good as using the original source but, it will be much better than if you compressed (using H.264) an already compressed file.
H.264 isn't a magic bullet. It can't repair a poorly compressed file and it will not dramatically improve an already compressed file.
I think the Windows Movie Maker software allows you to export to some sort of DV (Digital Video) format. This will not add any new data to an already compressed file but it will not further compress the file either.
Don't try to increase the dimensions of the file. If it was 320X240 when first made (or compressed) leave it at that size when you apply the H.264 codec.
I hope this helps answer your questions.

  • I'm running snow leopard. The try to open any .mov file in Quicktime, and I get an error message that says, "The document xyz.mov could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that Quicktime player understands. I'm a recent upgrade to Snow Leopard.

I'm running snow leopard. The try to open any .mov file in Quicktime, and I get an error message that says, "The document xyz.mov could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that Quicktime player understands. I'm a recent upgrade to Snow Leopard.
    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • How can I use QuickTime SDK to get Compress format of Video stream?

I can get uncompress video stream like this:
    QDerr = NewGWorldFromPtr( &m_hGWorld, k32BGRAPixelFormat, &rcMac,
    NULL, NULL, 0, (char*)m_pVideoBuffer,
    m_sAVFileInfo.sResInfo.ulWidth*4);
then the m_pVideoBuffer is uncompress video stream. How can I use QuickTime SDK to get Compress format of Video stream? I could change "k32BGRAPixelFormat" to other format, use other API or something?
Could someone have the method? Best Wishes!

Firefox, I would make sure you update your Desktop to Firefox 14.0.1, as the version you are running is quite old and out of date.
Then, do you have your Sync Recovery key, username and password? If you do, you can re-add Firefox Sync to your computer.

Tried to submit an app to the Mac App store and I received this now:
"Deprecated API Usage - Apple no longer accepts submissions of apps that use QuickTime APIs."
Looks like a fix is in for Adobe Air (https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3680732), but I'm not sure if the same is being performed on Director.
I'm not using any Xtras or anything, I think this is just embed within the Director builds.
Looks like submitting anything to any Apple App store is going to be on hold for everyone until this gets fixed.

    Hi,
Looks like this issue has been fixed in April 8th, 2014 release of AIR SDK. So the latest release 13.0.0.111 on May 13th, 2014 will have this issue fixed.

  • After Effects render constraints for .mov with h.264 codec maximum dimensions 2000px x 2000px?

Is there anyway I can create  .mov container with h.264 codec with dimensions 3840px by 1080px? When I try rendering from AE it lowers dimensions to under 2000px. Same thing happens when I try to save as from Quicktime. Programs I have access to are Premiere Pro, After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, and Final Cut.
    Thank you for your help.

Yes, It does seem to be mutliple LDCs. They asked for a final output video as 3840x1080. The  requirements are this and they finally sent this display.
    Basic Requirements
Ensure the resolution of the file (width and height in pixels) matches the specs provided exactly, even small deviations can result in poor quality playback or no playback at all
.MOV animations must use H.264 encoding
We recommend 15fps (frames per second) for animation
File size should be roughly 1 Megabyte per second or less, i.e. a 10 second .MOV file should be 10MB or less.
Thank you for your help, I will ask on the other forum.

  • H.264 codec is not supported

Any reason why a 1080p QuickTime movie encoded in h.264 at 10000kbps is not supported on the iPhone? That's the codes I'm always using and now all of a sudden it cannot be synced?
    Thanks,
    Simon

Exact specs supported, as given by Apple:
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Make sure the file complies with it.

  • .mp4 using  H.264 codec

    Hi,
I want to create .mp4 files using H.264 codec... It seems Compressor doesn't have that feature while Quicktime does (I can export to .mp4 and then choose H.264 as the codec).
Does anyone knows how to do it on Compressor?
    Thanks

    1. Export as H.264 .mov using Compressor
    2. Open the file in QuickTime Player
    3. Export to MPEG-4 (.mp4) as H.264, and choose pass-through for both video and audio
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime#Container_benefits
In QuickTime Pro's MPEG-4 Export dialog, an option called "Passthrough" allows a clean export to MP4 without affecting the audio or video streams. One recent discrepancy ushered in by QuickTime 7 is that the MOV file format now supports multichannel audio (used, for example, in the high-definition trailers on Apple's site]), while QuickTime's support for audio in the MP4 container is limited to stereo. Therefore multichannel audio must be re-encoded during MP4 export.
It sure is a bit strange that Compressor does not support exporting H.264 using an .mp4 container. I would recommend sending Apple some feedback about this: http://www.apple.com/feedback/compressor.html

  • How can we convert .mov ( implemented by quicktime APi)  to .WAV file

    Hi,
How can we convert one .MOV audio file (generated by quicktime API) to .WAV audio file ( need LINER - encoding format).
Here I dont know the encoding format of .MOV audio input file.
    regards,
    Rams

    mfrasyid1 wrote:
I wonder why this happens? The "unable to handle.." really does come out twice. Is it because the inputfile.mov which I wanna convert comes from the merging oftwo wave files? If so, then how can I convert this into single wave file? Thank you. That is a weird message, but yes, the .mov file probably stored the 2 original WAV files as 2 tracks of data, rather than 1 track. So whenever it's trying to transcode to a WAV file, it fails to transcode both tracks.
As for fixing it... I dunno. I know that JavaSound can mix two WAV files at the sample-level, so it actually mixes the sound instead of adding 2 tracks to a file...but I don't know why that's giving you those error messages, unless perhaps it's trying to transcode the video track into an audio track (perhaps the code isn't smart enough to handle transcoding a video file into an audio file? You'd have to check the code to see if that's the case...)

  • Anyone get H.264 to work in Handbrake?  Others?

On the MAC has anyone gotten H.264 encoded video to transfer to the iPod (I detest the term V-iPod, vPod or any of the other tacky names people are giving it)???
MPEG-4 encoded video via Handbrake or Toast works fine, but I'd like to transfer H.264. QT Pro is the only app to do this, but it will not transfer direct from DVD like Handbrake does....
If you did get H.264 to the iPod other than QT Pro, please post here.
    Thanks,
    Jason

This works. I have tried it. http://www.kaisakura.com/fortytwovx.php
I second this program. Just tried it and am very satisfied with the results. However, the previous responder did not tell the whole story. Unlike HandBrake, this application does not decrypt, so you would need to runt it through something like MacTheRipper, DVDBackUp, or 0SEx 0.0110a1 first. On the good side, this new version of a somewhat older program is probably one of the most functional you will find for the Mac. Once all of the needed modules are loaded, you can automatically prepare .m4v files for the iPod directly from the DVD or from other files (e.g., QuickTime, etc.), select chapter segments (e.g., chapter clips, TV episodes, etc.), select audio tracks (if more than one available), and then preview your selections in a player.
This latter has been of great benefit to me where I have had to make multiple passes to extract individual episodes or selected the wrong video and/or audio segments in the past and not discovered my mistake until the encoding was finished. Encoding in the default 1-pass mode is less than 1-to-1 on a G5 and the 2-pass mode is about 1.5-to-1 on my original 2.0GHZ model. Audio/Video in h.264 remains clear, sharp, and crisp despite my use of lower data rates (typically 540-550 kbits/sec which equates to targeting a 24-25 minute Doctor Who episode to a 100MB file. In addition, unlike Handbrake, the queue option in this application is fully functional. Finally, every test I've made using the preset iPod output selection has sync'd without problem.
I consider the $14.99 spent on the program to be well worth the investment.

  • How to quickly identify which videos have H.264 codec?

I'm now starting to convert my 500-some videos to H.264 for use with iTunes and Apple TV. The first thing I'd like to do is identify which videos are already encoded with the H.264 codec and which aren't. The Finder in Leopard has an option for searching for codecs, but it doesn't search for H.264 (it will only show whether a file is MPEG-4, for example. I could open the iTunes information window for every video and determine the codec that way, but it would take a long time to do so.
What I'm looking for is some kind of software that will produce an immediate list showing which files have the H.264 codec and which don't. After separating the files I will do a batch encode of the non-H.264 files.
I'd appreciate any advice you might have with this!

You simply can't address it (fully).
Quicktime has tons of Gamma issues and if a pc's video card is set to 16-235 instead of full range then VLC will washout video as well.
What I "THINK" Jim is trying to say is that when you use a broadcast grade monitor to check color or a YC-waveform/VectorScope or any scopes for that matter you can make sure that everything is accurate (meaning within correct range color wise). Which means that when people expose your video to other factors such as ... Quicktime which messes up the Gamma of the video often times, and VLC which in some cases with people who don't set their PC's/Mac's video cards up correctly or someone using WMP. Or simply someone watching it on a TV set which is not anywhere close to being calibrated it will still come out looking good anyways in MOST scenarios. IF you check everything on scopes/professional broadcast monitors.
So for instance I work in a TV station and everything I do has to be broadcast legal. So we use scopes and a pro monitor at our edit bay so that we can see how stuff actually looks. Then when someone watches it OTA or on Cable or w/e and they have their TV setup with a ton of extra chroma (color) then in this case for example since I setup my color correctly to begin with it won't look over saturated. Also if someone has a bunch of brightness on their set it won't look bad either. (Unless the TV set is just totally screwed up in which case you can't fix it or plan for that anyways)
But to attempt to answer your question directly. No it won't make it look the same on every player it will simply be much more likely to make it look much more acceptable.
(you can't control everything variable wise)

Obviously though I can't speak for Jim I'm just assuming that's what he meant when he spoke about why you need a pro monitor etc... If I'm incorrect I apologize Jim
