Hello all
I buy a K9A Platinium last week and i waiting for receive it but my question is : Can i do a Raid 0 with my 2 Western Digital 150 Go 10 000 rpm on it ??
Thanks for futur answers and sorry for my bad english ^^.

yep, i have 2 wd 150 raptors on that board over a month now in raid 0. no problems other than i would like to use a bigger stripe .
p.s. after you get windows installed update that raid driver first thing. it gave me quite a few problems.

When I came home from work my iMac was still in sleep mode with the fans running at nearly 5,000 rpm, was very loud. Anyone having the same issue?
I tested it with TechTools Deluxe and it didn't find any issues.

Reset the SMC and if that doesn't do it reset the PRAM. I think the SMC reset will take care of it though.

  • Internal RAID with 2 different drive makes

Currently, I have a 750GB Scorpio Black drive and I have about 20% free space. Originally, I had originally planned on swapping out the optical and putting another SB 750GB in there and creating a RAID 0. However, now that Seagate has released a 750GB Momentus Hybrid, I was wondering if I could get one of those and use it in conjuction with the Scorpio? I know I might lose a minimal amount of space as one drive might be read as slightly smaller, no big deal. How would the controller in the Seagate function in respects to what it put to the SSD portion? A RAID 0 with 2 Seagates would be optimal, I know, but I'd like to conserve a little on the funds.

RAID 0 is ludicrous for a boot drive other than a Mac Pro, then a SSD is much better and safer choice.
Apple won't let one install OS X on a RAID 0, other means has to be employed to get OS X onto the boot RAID o set.
RAID 0 splits the data path amongst all the drives in the set, any glitch with any drive and all your data is gone, *poof*.
So you have to maintain a cloned backup on a external drive nearly everyday, which is easy in a MacPro as there are four drive bays.
If you want speed and reliability in a boot drive, go with a SSD (barely keep any users files there) and use the other drive in the optical bay for large storage capacity, especially with a laptop as it's moved around a lot and thus the drive gets damaged more than a desktop.
You should know one can't boot from a OS X install disk once the optical drive is replaced, external optical booting is not possible.
So your going to need to learn how to clone your boot drive to blank extenral drive using the donationware Carbon Copy Cloner and hold the option key down while booting to use it, thus clone onto the new SSD or whatever.
I ran a boot RAID o 2x 10,000 RPM drives in a PowerMac G5 for many years, the performance was awesome, but only if I was doing large moves of data or many things that accessed the boot drive constantly. Most small time stuff there was really no difference with a regualar 5,400 RPM drive.
However back then the cloning was manual, no automatic ability like there is now.
A fresh install of 10.6 on a SSD will brighten your day.

  • 10,000 RPM HD for LP9 - Projects  ?

    Hi,
Would using a 10,000 RPM HD for LP9 projects, help improve the overall performance/response of the system, compared to 7,200 RPM HD. when working with Logic Pro 9 projects ?
    Thanks.

    Thanks,
I will be working with rather a large count of audio tracks, mainly audio stems recorded into LP9 from slave PCs hosting VST instruments. Which I would then need to edit, mix, and process in LP9.
I guess having a fast drive (10K RPM) would make audio work snappier when editing ?

  • Hard drive remains spinning at 5,000 rpm, and doesn't spin down by itself!

OK, I thought this was a fan problem until I installed the iStat Pro widget, and discovered that my hard drive was spinning at 5,000 rpm even when no operations were being performed. It doesn't slow down on its own, and I have to put the drive to sleep to get the rpm to return to around 1200 rpm, which seems more normal to me. However, over time (perhaps 20-30 minutes) the rpm gets back up to 5K again. But the CPU fan stays constant at around 1200 rpm. This doesn't seem normal to me. Oh, and Apple just replaced the hard drive on this five-week old iMac. Before I got the new drive, it was not noisy, and did not rev as high, and stay high. Any feedback about this situation would be helpful. I think I'm probably going to end up taking it back to the Genius Bar (sigh)...

    Hello grejambri
That does sound like a problem with the Hard Drive or it's temperature sensor.
One thing you might want to do is run the Apple Hardware Test to see if it reports a problem with the HD's temp. sensor. > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Then be sure to record and report any test results to the folks that replaced your Hard Drive.

  • 10.000 rpm HD

    Hello all,
Is it possible to install a 10.000 rpm HD into a PowerPC G5 1,6 GHz.
I know the size limit for the controller is 500 Gb, but I have no clue about any speed limit or whether the controller will manage the drive speed.
    Thanks a lot.
    Cheers.

You are really going to find it isn't the controller, it is SATA II specs and features, plus, you are just as well off with a $77 7.2k 640GB drive. 3-5 yrs ago, yes, 10K Raptor made sense. Today, not really.

  • Just replaced my fans, running at 000 RPM

    Hi guys,
I recently replaced the fans on my macbook pro because they were making horrible buzzing noises sometimes. I ocassionaly run games and movies on my laptop, and have not had much problem with overheating. However, after i got my new fans simple tasks were causing my mac to overheat and slow down my mac in general. I downloaded an application called SMCFancontrol to get my fans running, but no matter what i changed in the preferences, my fan speed stayed at 000 RPM, and simple tasks overheated my laptop. I guess my question is why is this happening and what are the easiest solutions to fix this?
    All answers are appreciated,
    Thanks

You did not install the fans correctly or did not connect the cables correctly or the fans are not the right models for your computer.

  • LaCie Desktop Manager doesn't recognize LaCie RAID with my 2011 MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I have a new MacBook Pro 17" but I am not able to use the LaCie Desktop Manager with the LaCie 4big Quadra Enterprise Class RAID. The drive is recognized by the finder via eSATA, FireWire, USB, but is not recognized by the LaCie Desktop Manager. This prevents me from encrypting the drive. The LaCie Desktop Manager could recognize the raid with my early 2008 MacBook Pro.
I'd like to know if anyone else is having the same problem with their 2011 MacBook Pro.
I have been communicating with LaCie support but he tells me that he can't check the same or similar configuration as mine.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

Looks like the cable is the same if you still have the 2010.

  • Disk utility Q: setting up RAID with 2 firewire drives

    Hi,
I tried setting up a redundant RAID with two LaCie 250gb firewire drives in Apple's Disk Utility. All was OK until I restarted. The RAID didn't show up, and both disks came up as unreadable. I was unable to reformat, erase, repair, or partition either of the LaCie drives. I tried new cables and both the front and rear Firewire ports. No matter what I did, I got an input/output error.
I was able to erase and reformat one of the drives on my powerbook running 4.6. The other drive appears to be DOA, as it clicks and blinks and does little else.
So what gives? I'm going to exchange the dead drive, but I don't want to have the same problem with setting up a RAID if the same nonsense is going to happen again. Any thoughts?

FW RAID on G5s is PITA and very poor performance. You would also need a PCI FW800 controller to get a boost or anything like normal. If you want any type of RAID, invest in Serial ATA drive/case/controller.
SeriTek if you want it to be bootable. SeriTek or Sonnet for direct connect. Sonnet if you think you might need more than 4 drives and use Port Multiplier.
There is only one FW channel that has to be shared if you don't invest in one or more FW800 controllers.
My bet is the drive could be fine but needs to be zeroed and could have damaged boot blocks at this point.
I am not a fan of mirrors. Backups, yes, lots. Stripped for scratch and even a dedicated boot OS/apps, yes. I've run with Disk Utility and SoftRAID (3.5) for 4 yrs now but mostly SCSI and one FW800 RAID which only gets about 75-80MB/sec. Even a single drive gets near 60MB/sec and a mirror would cut that in half.

  • RAID with Disk Utility question

I've setup a RAID array in disk utility for an external SATA NAS that I have. The Silicon Image Si3132 drivers are not working for Snow Leopard (the SATARAID 5 drivers) so I've installed the base non-raid drivers for 10.6.
I'm using Disk Utility to setup the RAID for now until I get updated drivers from SI. Here's my question:
Let's just say that my Mac Pro one day decides to die and I have to rebuild a new OS on the machine. I will then have this external drive where I've configured a software RAID with Mac OS X. Will I be able to rebuild this RAID and recover the data, or will I lose all of the data if the Mac needs to be rebuilt?
The external enclosure has its own controller, but these silicon image drivers do not seem to want to work as they are kernel panicking.
Will I be able to recover the RAID config with disk utility if I rebuild the machine? My thinking is NO

You have four internal hard drives; ability to boot from FW or USB, and I would include TimeMachine and clone (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper). Some WHS NAS servers also support TimeMachine and SuperDuper, but I would have local backups. Two minimum.
I would not rely on SI or RAID.
And all you need to boot from, and I'd have at least two, is a basic 30GB partition for Mac OS: a working copy of your system as is, a copy of last version installed also, AND, one "emergency" boot partition for disk maintenance and repairs.
Then use NAS as second line of backup for your data, disk images, etc.

  • Settinng up a mirrored raid with 2 80 gig HDs

This is my first time setting up an xServe. I know I need to set-up a mirrored raid with my 2 80 gig drives, but I also read that I should not place my other software on the same partition as the OS incase I need to ever perform a clean install. My question is do I need to purchase a 3rd drive module, or can I set-up a partition within the mirrored raid scenario? If so, how do I do this with the Disk Utility?
Dual 2.3GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4)   Running Tiger Server

    Dan Soderholm-
I don't think partitioning a RAID is bad in some situations as long as you are aware of the pitfalls.
First would be speed. If one partition held data and one held applications, the heads of the drive have to scramble between partitions in order to grab all of the data. This slows things down significantly in practice.
The second major problem is data loss. If something fails, you are losing more than one "drive" and must deal with the associated hassles of rebuilding everything. If you have a robust backup strategy you can mitigate the negative effects of this however.
Your theory bout getting into trouble and wiping the system partition can be another false sense of security. Nine times out of ten when something goes south you will be wiping the entire disk and starting from scratch, and usually after you have spent considerable time just trying to wipe the system partition. It always seems to be the partition information that gets wrecked.
    Luck-

  • Can I make a hardware raid with the on board Marvell SE9128 chip on p67a-gd65?

    Hi,
as you all know the RAID 0/1/10/5/JBOD with the p67 chipset are pure software raids or "fake" raids. I saw some sata-raid pcie 2.0 x1 cards on the sell which have the Marvell SE9128 chip. So my question is: Can I make a hardware raid with the onboard Marvell SE9128 chip on the p67a-gd65?
    Thanks

What do you want to say with this? I know what's the difference between a software (fake) and hardware raid? Your post doesn't answer the question. The p67-chipset has integrated software raid. The marvell se9128 is also found on some hardware raid cards. That's why I'm still wondering if it is for a hardware raid on this board or not.

  • Suddenly Slow G-Raid with FCP

I bought a 1T G-Raid about 5 months ago, and for a while it worked like a dream with my FCP media. Now it still works, but it often takes a while for it to "kick in" -- I get the little spinning wheel icon and I can hear the drive start up, stop and start up again. As a result, I do a lot of waiting as I edit. Not good.
I have the G-Raid hooked up to my FW800 bus, and two daisy-chained LaCies and a Presonus sound card hooked up to my FW400 bus. I have run both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on the G-Raid, with no effect. I'm only using about 350 gigs of the 930-gig capacity.
Why would the G-Raid suddenly start to get sluggish, and what can I do to get it back to its lightning fast self?
    Thanks.

Back up that data to another disk as soon as you can. It may be a sign of a failing internal power supply. Does the G-Raid unmount at random?
I'd send it to G-Technologies and have them fix it.
I personally don't recommend G-Raids after having too many turn into expensive paper weights after failed power supplies, even after sending them in for repair.

  • Encrypted root on software RAID with 2.6.33

    Hi,
I ran an update earlier today on my HTPC, hoping for mantis included in the 2.6.33 kernel to work with my TV-Tuner card, when I recognized that the configuration for software-raids changed.
So I followed the instructions on: Installing with Software RAID or LVM and added the dm_mod module to the MODULES list and replaced raid with mdadm in the HOOKS list resulting in
HOOKS="base udev autodetect sata mdadm usbinput ecrypt filesystems"
After that I successfully rebuilt the kernel and decided it was time for a reboot, but after running the hooks udev, mdadm and encrypt, the screen shows:
    Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/mapper/root ...
root device '/dev/mapper/root' doesn't exist. Attempting to create it.
ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/mapper/roo'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell.
cat /proc/mdstat shows no configured raid arrays, while assembling them with mdassemble works.
I've tried to boot with and without specifying the raid arrays in grub's kernel line, always with the same result.
Even after booting from a live CD an chrooting in the system to rebuild the kernel - same error message.
Any ideas what I've done wrong?
    Best regards

I'm going to change this and rebuild the kernel image.
Don't know where the difference comes from :/
Okay - the difference comes from running the command in the arch livecd system and in the chrooted environment
But both somehow don't seem to work for me.
When running "mkinitcpio -p kernel26", this is the output:
