RAID-5 configuration and performance

Hi,
About three years ago, we had a disk drive fail so after the long delayed, repair, I reconfigured the data disk drives into one RAID-5 metadata drive:
$ cat /etc/lvm/md.cf
# metadevice configuration file
# do not hand edit
d45 -r c1t1d0s0 c1t2d0s0 c1t3d0s0 c1t4d0s0 c1t5d0s0 c1t9d0s0 c1t10d0s0 -k -i 256b
(256b -> 256 blocks or 128k bytes)
I went RAID-5 because I wanted the next disk failure to keep the application up until we could schedule a repair activity . . . not fail the application hard and make a crisis d'jour. But at the time, I was working fast and did not realize the '256b' was larger than the cache size of the existing disk drives, the smallest disk cache in the array is just over 105k bytes. Still the array built fine and works in our application. It is 'fast enough' until I try to load a backup . . . then it performs like a dog. It is the Oracle database restore that takes too long.
I suspect my large stripe/interlace size has cut the number of hardware cache buffers in half, from 64 to 32 and this would explain the poor restore performance. I am looking at alternatives now that 1TB USB drives are in the petty cash range but I work on a government contract and money is tight, which leads to these questions:
UFS blocksize is 8192 - is there a known, optimum RAID-5 "interlace" size that is an integer multiple of the UFS block size?
Larger blocksizes means longer data transfer times to and from cache but compared to rotational delays, this is modest. Is there a credible, RAID-5 performance model for random read/writes to a RAID-5 array that uses rotational delay, data transfer speed, and seek delays for an optimum solution?
Are there Solaris tools that might give us insights to disk-layer, SCSI commands being used? Something for SCSI like 'snoop' is for network traffic.
The disk drives appear to have an option to use the cache for read-modify-write instead of physically hitting the same track over and over again. Are there Solaris tools that would allow us to use basic level SCSI commands to reconfigure the disk drives for more intense cache operation during the restore and return to default performance during normal operation?
My current thinking is to take the system down for a series of benchmarks using a semi-log scale "stripe/interlace" of "n" multiples of 8192, the UFS blocksize:
1*8192 -> the smallest tested only if n=2-5 suggests n=2 might be faster than any others
2*8192 -> second test, matches some examples in the documentation
5*8192 -> first test (I have some smaller backups to use that should run within a day)
10*8192 -> third test, determines if there is any reason to go larger
13*8192 -> is the largest that would fit in the smallest disk drive, cache
Based upon these benchmarks, I would test the range between the two fastest to see if there is a multiple of 8192 that shows a performance advantage. However, these tests take time, measured in days. I'm OK with taking the down time but wanted to ask the community if anyone has a better plan or insights to share.
This is not a 'hair on fire' problem as I will schedule the RAID-5 benchmarks for late May. But I thought I'd ask the community first.
Thanks,
Bob Wilson
ps. This forum software seems to be at war with our government e-mail system. I will check back but you can also send a note to [email protected].

Solved, it turned out to be a setting in BIOS that I overlooked, drive is now in use.

    Hi,
There are four main tasks to use Azure Diagnostics:
    Setup WAD
    Configuring data collection
    Instrumenting your code
    Viewing data
The original Azure SDK 1.0 included functionality to collect diagnostics and store them in Azure storage collectively known as Azure Diagnostics (WAD). This software, built upon the Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) framework, fulfills two design requirements
    introduced by Azure scale-out architecture:
Save diagnostic data that would be lost during a reimaging of the instance..
Provide a central repository for diagnostics from multiple instances.
After including Azure Diagnostics in the role (ServiceConfiguration.cscfg and ServiceDefinition.csdef), WAD collects diagnostic data from all the instances of that particular role. The diagnostic data can be used for debugging and troubleshooting, measuring
performance, monitoring resource usage, traffic analysis and capacity planning, and auditing. Transfers to Azure storage account for persistence can either be scheduled or on-demand.
To know more about Azure Diagnostics, please refer to the below article ( Section : Designing More Supportable Azure Services > Azure Diagnostics )

is there a way to run a external ssd with my mid 2011 iMac hdd in a raid configuration and basically have a fusion drive

A Fusion Drive is not a RAID; it's a CoreStorage logical volume group. While it's technically possible to do as you suggest, there would be little or no benefit from it.

  • Configure Cisco Mediatrace, Cisco IOS IP SLA, and Performance Monitoring

    Hi all,
I am implementing Cisco Prime Collaboration to monitor the quality of the VoIP call.
I am following all the steps that I have to do to accomplish this task at this link:
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Setting_up_Devices_for_Prime_Collaboration_Assurance#Configuring_Unified_Contact_Center_Enterprise_Devices
And now I am arrived on this step:
Configure Cisco Mediatrace, Cisco IOS IP SLA, and Performance Monitoring
Not all the Cisco devices that I have on the network are "Mediatrace, IP SLA and Performance Monitoring" capabilities. The core switch is one of them.
What will happen if some devices are configured with these capabilities and some are not?
Are the data provided from Cisco Collaboration still reliable?
    Thanks in advance.
    Luigi

I can't see a reason why the 2 features won't work together. The 2 features will work just fine with each other.
Unfortunately there is no sample config with both feature in the same document, but it will work just fine.

Have you enable the RAID Array as Bootable Drive in the Bios?
All RAID options are enabled. I didn't touch the BIOS prior to starting the process. The RAID array wasn't listed in the BIOS as a bootable device. In fact, it wasn't listed at all. It was after I discovered this I used F10 to see if it was detected there. The drive was listed, but it wasn't bootable. I then made it bootable. After exiting this section, the PC booted straight into Windows. On the occasions when Windows started, I didn't go into the BIOS to see what it shows.

  • Script to perform post server build configurations and validate settings

    Hello!
I would like to create a script that can set numerous Windows server settings and validate that they are indeed set correctly, based on a predefined list of settings.
For example: A third party company deploys servers from templates.  I am tasked with going through the build and verifying certain configurations and settings are set, based on my company's build request. Depending on where the server resides (physically)
    it will get specific settings.
Is there a way to script making the correct changes and also display a validation report that all the settings/attributes that were changed, meet the expected value?
Settings like dns settings, netbios, pagefile size/location, Terminal Server host settings(session limits etc), local admin accounts, windows features, bginfo, drive letters, drive sizes, installed ram, number of cpu cores, date/timezone, and the list goes
on.  I currently run a few batch files to make the changes, but I'm still required to check that the settings are correct.  It would be nice to have all the batch files rolled into a script that makes changes and then runs a validation test against
those changes. Or at the least, make changes and display all of the current values/settings so I can validate they are the correct ones.
I have little scripting/powershell experience.  I could use some assistance to get me going in the right direction.

Here's some intro information that should give you a place to start pulling threads:

  • Storage options and performance

    We have a GroupWise 8.02 HP2 running on a NetWare 6.5 SP8.
The hardware has a RAID 1 for its SYS: volume and a RAID 5 (4 disks)
    for its MAIL: volume.
We've been running low on space....
As an immediate solution, we're considering plugging into, via iSCSI,
a SAN that has additional space.
    - If we go this route, would it be better to move our entire MAIL: volume
to the SAN (rather than extend the volume over an iSCSI connection) or
    would performance/reliability not matter?
    - Are there any documents (I haven't found any, as yet) describing moving
such a volume to another piece of hardware? [I suspect a few
    configuration
files would need to be pointed to another location, but don't know if
    there
are hidden pointers that might be missed.]
Also under consideration (possibly a long term solution) would be to move
to a new server with more capacity. [I'm considering a RAID 10.]
    - If we go to a RAID 10, would this eliminate the need for a RAID 1 for
our SYS: volume? (Would it still be considered 'best practice' to have
the SYS: on its own RAID--or could the different volumes be spread
across the RAID 10 and be considered safe?
    Many thanks,
    -Steve

    remain the same.
So ... you'd still recommend having separate RAIDs
for SYS, MAIL, Archive, and Restore? If so, it
doesn't seem doable (at least on our budget) to run
a RAID 10 for our MAIL volume. The drop in storage
I/O speed (from having less spindles available)
wouldn't gain us much. [I was looking to have 16
    drives with the RAID 10.]
If it's only GroupWise you would be running on SLES or preferably OES2, I'd think that would be doable. Once running, many sysadmins I work with don't have to know/use more than ' service grpwise status/stop/start' and the http status pages of the agents. GroupWise runs independent enough and as I've experienced very stable. I can't look into how much resources you/your company has to invest the time needed to get a grips with it.
Looking a bit further, it would be something you'd need to do in any case if wanting to continue using Novell products. The new GroupWise version due somewhere this year won't run NetWare for example.
The most important factor imo is speed and stability.
As for different Raid's for SYS/system disk and GW DIB data... no, I was only talking about keeping OS and GroupWise data on separate disks/LUNS. How you can implement this strongly depends on what storage system you are looking to but.
Raid10 is fast but not needed by definition, We use Raid50 in many setups - it performs well and has the added advantage of having more effective storage available with the same amount of disks. The choice on Raid set configuration is however very dependent on environment, load, vendor and type of the storage, overall load, etc... I don't think that's something one could really advise on without knowing more details.

  • RAID Level Configuration Best Practices

    Hi Guys ,
We are building new Virtual environment for SQL Server and have to define RAID level configuration for SQL Server setup.
Please share your thoughts for RAID configuration for SQL data, log , temppdb, Backup files .
    Files  RAID Level
    SQL Data File -->
    SQL Log Files-->
    Tempdb Data-->
    Tempdb log-->
    Backup files--> .
Any other configuration best practices   are more then welcome .
Like Memory Setting at OS level , LUN Settings.
Best practices to configure SQL Server in Hyper-V with clustering.
    Thank you
Please Mark As Answer if it is helpful. \\Aim To Inspire Rather to Teach A.Shah

    Hi,
If you can shed some bucks you should go for RAID 10 for all files. Also as a best practice keeping database log and data files on different physical drive would give optimum performance. Tempdb can be placed with data file or on a different drive as per
usage. Its always good to use dedicated drive for tempdb
    For memory setting.Please refer
This link for setting max server memory
You should monitor SQL server memory usage using below counters taken from
    this Link
SQLServer:Buffer Manager--Buffer Cache hit ratio(BCHR): IIf your BCHR is high 90 to 100 Then it points to fact that You don't have memory pressure. Keep in mind that suppose somebody runs a query which request large amount of pages in that
case momentarily BCHR might come down to 60 or 70 may be less but that does not means it is a memory pressure it means your query requires large memory and will take it. After that query completes you will see BCHR risiing again
SQLServer:Buffer Manager--Page Life Expectancy(PLE): PLE shows for how long page remain in buffer pool. The longer it stays the better it is. Its common misconception to take 300 as a baseline for PLE.   But it is not,I read it from
Jonathan Kehayias book( troubleshooting SQL Server) that this value was baseline when SQL Server was of 2000 version and max RAM one could see was from 4-6 G. Now with 200G or RAM coming into picture this value is not correct. He also gave the formula( tentative)
how to calculate it. Take the base counter value of 300 presented by most resources, and then determine a multiple of this value based on the configured buffer cache size, which is the 'max server memory' sp_ configure option in SQL Server, divided by 4 GB.
So, for a server with 32 GB allocated to the buffer pool, the PLE value should be at least (32/4)*300 = 2400. So far this has done good to me so I would recommend you to use it.
SQLServer:Buffer Manager--CheckpointPages/sec: Checkpoint pages /sec counter is important to know about memory pressure because if buffer cache is low then lots of new pages needs to be brought into and flushed out from buffer pool,
due to load checkpoint's work will increase and will start flushing out dirty pages very frequently. If this counter is high then your SQL Server buffer pool is not able to cope up with requests coming and we need to increase it by increasing buffer pool memory
or by increasing physical RAM and then making adequate changes in Buffer pool size. Technically this value should be low if you are looking at line graph in perfmon this value should always touch base for stable system.
SQLServer:Buffer Manager--Freepages: This value should not be less you always want to see high value for it.
SQLServer:Memory Manager--Memory Grants Pending: If you see memory grants pending in buffer pool your server is facing SQL Server memory crunch and increasing memory would be a good idea. For memory grants please read this article:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlqueryprocessing/archive/2010/02/16/understanding-sql-server-memory-grant.aspx
SQLServer:memory Manager--Target Server Memory: This is amount of memory SQL Server is trying to acquire.
SQLServer:memory Manager--Total Server memory This is current memory SQL Server has acquired.
For other settings I would like you to discuss with vendor. Storage questions IMO should be directed to Vendor.

  • RAID 5 Configuration.

    Hi there,
Need your advice... we are building a new OLTP data center... the hardware spec....
An IBM Xseries 235 based active/passive Cluster on a windows environment... having a RAID 5 configuration in the common storage (Quorum resource) shared by any one of the servers at a given time...
so now the issue is with the RAID...
the " RAID 5 array is built using only 3 disks ".... thats 2 disks for data striping and 1 disk for parity...
now all the data files, redo logs, control files, init files ... thats almost all files related to the database are put in this array... now my issue is keeping apart the performance issues.....
Will this disk layout strategy be supported by Oracle?
All files (data, redo logs, archives, control, init) are dumped to a single array of RAID 5 built on 3 disks... now upto my knowledge it is against Oracle's recommendations of multiplexing files (control and redo logs)...
The RAID striping and parity is being controlled by the hardware BIOS.... now if it is not able to rebuild disk images then the current disk configuration is not a high availability solution.....
    comments please...
    Cheers,
    GS

1.as such the non-rac oracle solution says, that your controlfiles, redologs and datafiles should be on a   shared disk.
    2. When you are implemneting windows clusters you cannot have native windows software fault tolerance, i.e raid..
    3. you could have tested this raid box with some test files whether they are able to build the images. Generally hardware raid is recommended for fault tolerance and is the best than the software raid.
    4. as far as availability is concerned depends on the design of your database configuration ,
lastly are you using oracle fail sage manager? .. if so you can monitor your instance very well

  • GT70 2PC – Software testing and performance report.

It is so excited here again. Currently, my first/only object after work is playing Titanfall.
I intended to share another performance testing today. But I didn’t. I found there are too many great open box posts on different forums. Therefore, I decide to dig the MSI software compatibility and do a touring. What can I say? I’m Mr.Curiosity who really desires to know every built-in application in system. That is why I share this article with you, my friends. I would like to discuss with everybody who is interested in MSI software. Of course, I have some performance reports for you, too. Please also remind me if you find any typo/wrong in this post. Thanks in advance.
    1. MSI Boot Configure
This is the first software which pops up immediately. It is thoughtful design because we can choose enter the [Windows 8.1 metro] or [desktop] by ourselves now. I give it two thumbs up!!!
Select your favorite boot configuration and press [OK]. If we want it work immdiately, we can logout the system and re-login again.
    2.   MSI Remind Manager
Honestly, I didn’t know what it is in the beginning. The cute robot shows every time when I login the system. I found this is a reminder for product registration. Good, I would like to have best MSI support and warranty for my lovely GT70 2PC. But don’t worry, if you don’t want to get this message again, you just need to select the right option and close it.
    3.   Synaptics TouchPad
This is a driver for mouse. [Mouse property] will show if we do the double clicks on TouchPad icon in tray. You can choose enable/disable internal pointing device when external pointing device is attached. This is brilliant. A tough guy (like me…HA! HA!) didn’t like to play game with touchpad. Because the character in game will be weak and slow if I control it by touchpad. Of course, I need the external mouse all the time and don’t want the interference from touchpad.
    4.   System Control Manager (SCM)
We can enable/disable the WLAN/BT/camera devices by SCM. Besides, it can control the display brightness, volume, screen on/off and ECO. ECO is special mode for gaming watching movie.
    5.   Sound Blaster CINEMA
Sound Blaster CINEMA is come from an old school audio company – CREATIVE. The software can adjust the surround sound easily. We also can adjust 5.1/7.1 surround sound for the internal speakers and external headphone. That is great, isn’t it?
Besides, we can also adjust CRYSTALIZER/BASS/SMART VOLUME/digital output by ourselves.
    6.   Killer Network Manager
This is a major feature of MSI NB.
In Killer Network Manager, we can set the network priority for each of applications and we also can abandon the connection from malicious software.
[Performance] shows current status of network. We can find out which application occupied the most greedy resources by it.
[Network -> Test Network Speed] will detect the network environment automatically. Furthermore, it will adjust the priority for applications.
[Killer Ethernet] show the LAN connection info.
[Killer Wireless] show the router info.
    7.   SteelSeries Engine
This is another major feature of MSI NB
If we do the right click on icon in tray, the menu will show following list. We can select [Launch SteelSeries Firmware Update Tool], [Updates]…and so on.
If we select the [Settings]. It can help us change default language and set application auto running when system power on.
    I.   Buttons
Double click to open the SteelSeries Engine. I think it can set 4 different keyboard settings for each of profiles. And it can switch by FN+1~4.
[Keypress Marc] can record what you input. And [Record Delays ] can modify the delay time. HA! No game can block us anymore. Please remember to press the [SAVE] for your setting
[Launch Application] can launch any application immediately. I suggest to set the cold key for this function.
Here is example. I use [PgUp] to quick start the 3D Mark11. See, it will pop up when I pressed [PgUp].
It is simple to use [TextMarco] set our own phrase. Now I become a quick speaker in my team. One key, only one key can help me to type a lot of words.
Are you tired to press some keys that you never want to touch in game (Like WIN KEY)? It is not the problem now.  [Disable Key] will do the favor and disable any key which you hate.
II.   [Colors] can change the color of backlight keyboard. Also, you can set different modes (Gaming/Audio…etc) on it.
We can change the color zone. There is not only 4 or 5 colors. The engine provides thousands of colors for us. [Audio mode] is the coolest. It will change colors by itself when we play music by speakers. I like to dance with my keyboard.
III.   We can select different languages by [Settings].
IV.   [Properties] can save our hard works of settings reliably.
    V.   If you want to defeat your competitors, it is important to know your enemy. However, It is more important to know yourself. [Statistics] can help us observe which keys are most popular by our fingers.
Right click on [Profile]. It can modify/export/import/delete the profiles.
Mouse can use the same kind of settings as keyboard.
    DPI setting for mouse.
    Save files.
We can record the mouse, too.
    8.   Norton
Norton Internet Security: Anti-Virus software, MSI provides 60 days for free.
Norton Online Backup: Online data backup software, MSI provides 30 days for free.
Norton Anti-Theft: Anti-Theft software, MSI provides 30 days for free.
If you like Norton’s products, you can buy it online.
If you don’t, I believe we can uninstall it directly.
    So, the decision is ours.
    Introduction from Norton official website
    9.   Dragon Gaming Center
    I.   System Monitor:
It can monitor CPU/GPU loading and temperature. We also can find the network speed and fan speed in it.
    II.   Utility:
You can set your favorite apps in [Add new Utility].
E.g. I added a [MSI Afterburner]. Click [Open] to build the link. Do you feel familiar with something? Exactly, [Launch Application] of [SteelSeries Engine] can do this, too.
    III.   Instant Play:
We can define [Fn+F4] to enable the quick start. But there is more secret.
We can also use [Browse] to assign the game which we want.
Click the icon of game and [Fn+F4] will be ready. We can only use 1 program at once.
I usually change the brightness, volume and mouse sensitive before the game. As you know, every games are different. It is sweet because we can use  [Apply Setting] to do this.
I can’t believe it. We also can find the clock feature in it. How convenient it is!
IV.   Hybrid Power is another MSI feature.
It can provide the power by AC adapter and battery in the same time. We can monitor the status in here.
    10. BurnRecovery
It can create the recovery CD/DVD/USB for MSI NB.
    Here can select Recovery disc/USB/ISO.
I will make a ISO file first.
We can select where to put the ISO.
    Creating the recovery file...
    Finish!
Open the folder and we can find 4 ISO files in it.
Well…[BurnRecovery Help] provide the details spec.
In my opinion, everyone should create their own recovery image. You will need it in one day.
    11. Battery Calibration
This is software for battery calibration. In order to keep our battery good, we should do the calibration every three months. Don’t forget to plug-in the AC adapter and battery during the process..
Press [Start] to begin the process. It will make the battery fully charged first.
Then, it will empty the battery like this.
System will shut down after the empty process. At last, fully charged again. It will take 4~5 hrs to complete the process.
    12. MSI Dragoon Army /MSI Facebook /Web site /YouTube

There is no message when I click this app at the first time. But when I attached my IPAD, it pops up the [Super-Charger]. It is amazing because IPAD can’t be charge by this USB port. As far as I know, the USB 3.0 only provides maximum 900mA for its device. IPAD will need 2.1A for charge process. I have no idea how MSI NB make IPAD charging okay.
    14. XSplit GameCaster
This is one of important features. I saw many different first class gaming machines this year. All of them have the broadcast software. (Like PS4, Xbos ONE)
It can switch the default language after we login.
Twitch/YouTube / Facebook/ Twitter/Google+ can be used by [Accounts]. It is easy to start the live show.
We can modify the resolution and use twitch by [Setting]
We can configure FPS/CPU loading/where to show on display by [Status label].
    Hotkey configuration.
    Videos storage.
Press [Ctrl+Tab] to call Gamecaster in game. And we can twitch or modify setting. I will provide my gaming video for you later.
    15. Power DVD
This is a famous video player. Also, it can support BD format.
We can use the [Setting] to change our language.
We can change 5 times for default country .
It is glad that I’ve finished the introduction of GT70 software.

  • Forms and Reports: Automated Test tools - functionality AND performance

    All,
    I'm looking to get a few leads on an automated test tools that may be used to validate Oracle forms and reports (see my software configuration below). I'm looking for tools that can automate both functional tests and performance. By this I mean;
    Functional Testing:
    * Use of shortcut keys
    * Navigation between fields
    * Screen organisation (filed locations)
    * Exercise forms validation (bad input values)
    * Provide values to forms and simulate user commit, and go and verify database state is as expected
    Performance Testing:
    * carry out tests for fixed user load
    * carry out tests for scaled step increase in user load
    * automated collection of log files and metrics during test
    So far I have:
    http://www.neotys.com/
Thanks in advance for your response.
    Mathew Butler
    Configuration:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux x86-64 architecture v4.5 64 bit
    Oracle Application Server 10.1.2.0.2 ( with patch 10.1.2.3 )
Oracle Developer Suite (Oracle Forms and Reports) V10.1.2.0.2 ( with patch 10.1.2.3 )
    Oracle JInitiator 1.3.1.17 or later
    Microsoft Internet Explorer 6

are there any tools for doing this activity like oracle recommended tools?
Your question is unclear.  As IK mentioned, the only tool you need is a new version of Oracle Forms/Reports.  Open your v10 modules in a v11 Builder and select Save.  You now have a v11 module.  Doing a "Compile All PL/SQL" before saving is a good idea, but not required.  The Builders and utilites provided with the version 11 installation are the only supported tools for upgrading your application.  If you are trying to do the conversion of many Forms files in a scripted manner, you can use the Forms compiler in a script.  Generating new "X" files will also update the source modules (fmb, mmb, pll).  See MyOracleSupport Note 955143.1
Also included in the installation in the Forms Migration Assistant.  Although it is more useful to people coming from older versions, it can also be used to move from v10 to 11.  It allows you to select more than one file at a time.  Documentation for this utility can be found in the Forms Upgrade Guide.

  • Macbook screen cracked, HD and performance issues

I am definitely disappointed with my computer.
I have a Macbook 13.3" 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 4Gb 160Gb HD, Serial#: W8**VM0P5, and within 1,5 year I have faced many issues, which are related here:
    September 24th, 2008
    O.S. CRASHES
I bought it in late September 2008, in Cologne, Germany, at the reseller "Compustore PC Gmbh", and also asked 4Gb Ram, and a Wireless mighty mouse.
After changing the Ram memory, i went home; and a few days later, the problems came. Sometimes, the system crashed suddenly, showing the grey screen: "You must restart your computer". I thought it was normal, and continued to use, when it became more frequently (Picture: http://picasaweb.google.com/gstorck/MacbookProblems#5476986272817173138). It was little strange for a new laptop, and then I took it back to the store to fix it. The seller just took a look, changed some configurations, and gave me back again. I did this twice, and had to get back to the store for the third time, due to new crashes and some lack of performance. Then the seller replaced the Ram memory, with new 4Gb.
After that, the system worked more stable; the problem happened some two or three times after some months, but it was ok.

    HD Problems
One year later, in late 2009, I purchased a Mac OS update, the Snow Leopard. I was back to Brazil, where I live till today. During the OS installation, something went wrong and it couldn't be completed. Mac asked me to restart the computer, but then the system didn't start anymore; some files were corrupted. I guess there was not enough space to install the update, so it was not completed; but it should be no reason to the corruption of the OS.
    November 10th, 2009
I took my computer to the local Apple technical support, the "Omni Informatica", in Curitiba, PR, Brazil, to format the HD and reinstall the Snow Leopard. As I needed more space, I also changed my original 160Gb HD for a new 250Gb Western Digital HD. The service was finished in Nov 17th.
I noticed also little cracks in the laptop case, but I had no time to insist with the bad local technical support to repair it (I know Apple already acknowledged this problem.) They said, at first, that they would have to ask the Apple USA to send the body, or something like that.
    (Pictures:http://picasaweb.google.com/gstorck/MacbookProblems#5476986477312032226)
    January 12th, 2010.
    SCREEN CRACKED
The reinstallation was ok, and the laptop was running well. Suddenly, when I take the Macbook from the case and open it on my desk, something pretty wrong appears: a large crack on the lower right corner of the screen.
It was not dropped, it was not crashed, and I did not "close it with a pen inside".
The screen simply cracked. And as so many similar problems with another users I could easily find on the web, I really expect Apple to admit it as a Manufacture's fault. The local technical support said it is no other thing except I hit the laptop, or dropped it, so it's all my fault. (See Picture 3)
The only thing they can offer me is to repair the screen for R$1200. I am definitely not going to pay for this; a "normal" and good pc laptop costs this price (And a new basic macbook costs today R$2400).
If the problems were just it, it would be not so bad.

    HD FAILURE
After 1 month, on Feb 11th, my new 250Gb HD simply stopped working. Different from the first time, that the HD was just corrupted, this time it has really broken, it died. I had it all backed up, but I have lost the HD.
Back again to the technical assistance, they said to me the problem was the same that cracked my screen: my fault, on letting the laptop fall, or hitting it with some kind of pressure. They couldn't do anything, and even the Western Digital 3-month Warranty would not cover this type of problem ("user's misuse").

    DECREASE IN PERFORMANCE
I'm working again with the original 160Gb HD (formatted and reinstalled), and some other external drives to store my files.
It's been quite difficult to deal with all this Data and Screen problems, and now the Macbook's performance is decreasing every day. It's been slower to process operations and to launch the applications. Sometimes, the system does not even sleep anymore when the laptop is closed, or it takes so long time to sleep that it just sleeps when I open it again. Besides, sometimes the mouse pointer disappear, and some bizarre graphics take its place.
Don't forget: It's a 1,5-year-old Macbook, with 2.4GHz, 4Gb RAM and the O.S. is installed for no longer than 4 months. It is supposed to work better, I guess.
I saved a lot of money to buy a good computer, and to get rid of the endless issues I had with PCs. That issues never were so serious with the ones I face now with Macbook.
Even if I pay R$1200 to replace the screen, with the money I don't have, I would still stand these performance issues, which seem to have come with this problematical laptop. I hope to have some solution from Apple, if it want to deliver what it promises and want to keep a customer.
Otherwise, I will have to change to another system platform and another computer manufacturer, to see if I stop throwing money away with these devices. I think that maybe at least, the cost-benefit ratio will be higher.
Did anybody receive contact from Apple support about these screen problems?

    Apple user since 2008

Well, your first issue is pretty clearly just some bad RAM, and it sounds like even the replacement RAM was bad. Who knows if the people who put it in had any kind of clue what they were doing. I've seen repair shops where people are smoking in the same room they do repairs.
Second problem sounds typical of a failing HDD. It's a fairly common problem with laptops... Apple, Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer... Probably the single most common problem with laptops no matter who makes them. People get this notion in their heads that the "portable" aspect of laptops means you can pick them up and carry them all over while turned on. Which you can... If you don't mind dramatically shortening the life of the HDD. What "portable" REALLY means with laptops, is that they are easy to move if you put them into a powered down state. They should NEVER be moved around when in normal operation. And since you seem to do a bit of traveling, if you're on a plan, and there's turbulence, you should shut the laptop off until it smooths out.
The screen cracking could have something to do with the rather sudden change in climate. Germany isn't exactly the frozen tundra, but it is a pretty different climate from Brazil, and changes in things like humidity could cause problems. The laws of thermodynamics tell us that things expand as they heat up, so if there's already a crack somewhere, it could easily get worse as a result of increased heat.
And since your initial hard drive was already starting to fail, it hasn't magically stopped failing since being removed from the system, so obviously performance is going to get worse.
At this point, it's pretty much impossible to tell where the damage was done, so you're probably just out of luck. The people in Germany could have screwed something up, or the people in Brazil, it could have been environmental damage, and it's possible the defect was always there, it just didn't manifest until recently. There's just no way to tell for sure. So Apple is unlikely to do anything for you.

Please Drop all OLD schema ,Create a New "Prefix" for fresh installation , don't use old schema .
    Let me know .

  • Important!! Improve the life and performance of the battery.

Reduce the operating temperature and increase battery life
The battery in your notebook PC is designed to provide the necessary amount of energy for the processor while maintaining HP high safety standards. As a result, the battery may not charge or may stop providing power to the notebook when the battery temperature exceeds the specified, design safety level.
If the battery life appears shorter than normal, the battery stops charging before it is 99%-100% full and the battery appears warmer than usual, the battery has most likely reached its designed "no charge" safety state. The battery will no longer charge until the temperature condition is corrected.
Try one of the following methods to correct the battery temperature:
When charging the battery, do not use applications that require large amounts of system resources such as graphic or memory intensive applications, heavy and extended hard drive usage.
Turn off your notebook and remove the battery to allow it to return to a safe operating temperature.
Make sure the notebook PC is operating on a hard surface. Using the Notebook PC on a bed or sofa may block the vents causing the notebook PC to heat up and shut down.
By taking these steps, the battery will return to its normal operating temperature range and continue to charge and discharge as designed.
Calibrating the battery while PC not in use
Recalibrating the battery requires a cycle of a complete charge and a complete discharge. To recalibrate the battery while using the PC is not is use complete the following steps.
The recalibration may take 1-5 hours depending on the age of the battery and the configuration of the notebook PC you own. The PC should not be used while you perform the following steps. Completing all the following steps will also calibrate the battery so that the power meter readings are accurate.
    Shut down the notebook PC
Connect the AC Adapter to the notebook PC and to an electrical socket.
Charge the Notebook PC until the Battery Charge light is Green. This indicates the battery is completely charged.
Press and release the Power Button to start the computer.
Press the F8 key several times when the HP Logo displays.
When the Windows Advanced Startup Menu displays, select the Startup in Safe Mode option.
Remove the AC power adapter from the notebook PC.
Allow the battery to discharge completely until the notebook PC turns off.
The battery is now calibrated and the battery level reading on the power meter is now accurate.
If you are not using the notebook regularly then please unplug the AC adapter and shut down the notebook. By following these practices will improve the life and performance of the battery. Here is a quick list of Do's and Don'ts for the care of your Li-On batteries:
    Do's
When you receive a new Notebook or Tablet PC, leave the battery to fully charge overnight.
Condition a new battery by using it until it is fully discharged, and then re-charge it fully. Doing this once a month will help to accurately calibrate your battery.
Always ensure the battery is recharged as soon as possible after it becomes fully discharged. A battery will be permanently damaged if left for an extended length of time in a fully discharged state.
Remember that a Lithium-Ion battery will slowly deteriorate; a new battery will always perform better than one that is 6-months old.
Remember that the battery half-life is rated for a certain total number of charge/discharge cycles (see your User Manual or Quick Start Guide for the rating). For example, a battery that is rated for 3 hours and 500 charge/discharge cycles, will still be considered as within specification, even if it only lasts for 1 hour 45 minutes after 500 charge/discharge cycles.
Heat is the worst enemy of a battery. Allow plenty of air to circulate around the Notebook/Tablet PC, so that the battery is kept as cool as possible when charging and also when in use. If provided, use the integrated 'legs' under the Notebook to raise the notebook and improve air circulation.
Remove the battery if storing for several months (the battery should be at approximately 50% charge or higher).
If you use a NoteBus or if charging your Notebooks or Tablet PCs in a confined space, allow for adequate ventilation in order to keep the batteries as cool as possible.
    Don'ts
Do Not - Expose the battery to excessive heat or cold (i.e. outside the range of 10-35 degrees Centigrade ambient).
Do Not - Store the battery in a fully charged state (store batteries with about 50% charge).
Do Not - Allow a nearly flat battery to be unused for more than a month or so. The battery will slowly discharge until it becomes fully discharged and this will permanently damage the battery cells.
Do Not - Charge your Notebook/Tablet PC inside a carry case - the battery may overheat.
Do Not - Charge your Notebook/Tablet PC when stacked on top of each other - the battery may overheat.
Remember: Your battery is slowly degrading all the time, even if it is not used. Keeping your battery as cool as possible will slow down this degradation considerably.
