Raid Admin "gathering info" forever

The progress wheel just spins and spins. Tried updated version of Raid Admin, tried restarting controllers, checked all ethernet connections, etc.
Any ideas?

We are having the same problem. It doesn't seem to finish connecting. If we try to change settings (like set the lower controller to use DHCP) it doesn't seem to do anything.
We are running Raid Admin 1.5, and the passwords for the two controllers are the same. The only thing I haven't yet tried is to physically restart the RAID drive, because people are currently using it.
Edit:
I forgot to mention a couple things. We don't get any information about the second controller, but we are using the drives on that side every day, so we know it is working (at least mostly working). I get info on the first controller (upper) okay, and it says the second controller is okay too (but gets no other info). It can't get any info on the 2nd blower either.

  • Raid Admin on 2nd ethernet controller, is firmware safe?

    Hi,
Have an XRAID and am having problems using the Admin util to configure new set of drives. Admin util does not work with gathering the right info and letting me make changes.
    BACKGROUND=
Was initially built with 7 drives in the first controller and used for editing. Built fine RAID5, in use for several months. Network monitoring port is not connected and was only used during setup. No changes to ip's were made.
Several months later (that being now). We need to the second controller for a seperate host. Aquired 7 drives, physically inserted them into the XRAID, lights went red then green. All green lights.
Went to configure. Connected ethernet monitor port on the 2ND controller (never before used) to a hub and a machine used to configure / run RAIDAdmin. Finds it via rendezvous / bonjour (whatever they call it) connect to it. Admin says Gathering info and hangs.
Lights show up in RAIDAdmin as orange | red | nothing | red
It gives me some info such as location, and event log. Can view event log back several weeks etc. However it does NOT give me any info on drives, luns, hardware nothing.. shows the drives as not installed. Including the 7 on the left which are currently operational.
tried restarting raid2 controller. Made changes to ip etc which did not save either.
Then tried the other top ethernet port, the used on the first install. Could not be found running via the admin util. Tried tcpdumping the hub and finding what ip but there was nothing. Tried putting a dhcp server on the network nothing.
    BACKGROUND-
Am I doing something wrong? The big question I have at this stage is doing the firmware upgrade to 1.5 safe?. Its the last thing I havnt done. Its still the same as out of the box.
How likely is it to succeed updating for one. Two for fixing my problem with not being able to admin the raid. What possible problems could i be faced with, the READ ME FIRST makes no mention of dangers such as the RAID being destroyed etc. or is that not a possibility? I do not want to affect the current RAID on controller 1.
p.s sorry if its long winded. like to give details. thanks.

I imagine that its some web server/ snmp thing that runs on the xraid and just binds to both ips to allow access. The first one, say eth0 i used when i first set it up and worked fine and have tried it periodically to check things. This one now doesnt work as far as i cant find the ip it has or connect to it. Lights on back are fine. No traffic on hub though.
2nd one, call it eth1. the one ive first started using now is its first use as far as i recall. It is the one that half works that just keeps trying to gather info and not get anywhere.
I might try running the RAIDAdmin on another monitor system. The more I think about it im just not sure if its the management bit or the monitoring system. The monitoring system is the same as the one used previously.
I do not look forward to having to recover terabytes

  • RAID Admin: Components is Red?

We recently suffered a power drop in our edit suites and afterwards, I checked the status of our RAID (which was connected to a UPS) using RAID Admin. There are a series of buttons in the screen which denotes a status of the Arrays and Drives, Components, Fibre Channel and Network. All are green except for Components. When I click on the Components button, it shows me a diagram/image of the back of the RAID and all of the areas are lit with green dots. Note:, I am only really using the Upper Controller (Drives 1-7-- actually Drives 1-4). The right side, controlled by the Lower controller (Drive 8-14) , is not populated with any drives. This has been the case ever since we've had the RAID.
Also, when I go to the EVENTS tab, I see an error/yellow button that notes: _RAID Controller 1 Fibre LIP_. Just below it, with a green button, its says: _RAID Controller 1 Fibre Link Up_. (Same time and date) So I'm not sure what the yellow button/message means. The RAID seems to be working fine but I thought I'd better check further. Thanks for any help that is offered.

I am having an almost identical problem to your, though we didn't suffer any power drops. But over the past year everything was working fine with RAID Admin. Then one day I went to use it and it was not recognizing the Xserve RAID anymore, so I deleted the name in the RAID Admin application with the intention of just adding the system again but it did not show up. So I decided to reset both the controllers on the Xserve RAID. Once I did that, I was able to add the system again to the RAID Admin window. It showed up right away. I thought I was home free, but the components circle is RED (all others are green). To the right of it, it says its "Gathering info…" but it has been spinning for the last 5 minutes since I added it. Down below, if I click on the Components tab and look at the diagram - all the components have a green circle. When I click on the top controller in the diagram it says the status is "OK" and show the cache size and firmware version, but when I click on the lower controller, it says "OK" also but it refuses to list the cache size and the firmware version. I also noticed under the Arrays and Drives tab, the picture of the RAID drives only shows my array on the left side, it does not show my RAID on the right side as if it doesn't exist. With all this, our RAID system is working fine and serving our users data with no complaints at all. But I am concerned about the red circle for the components. The reason why I went into RAID admin in the first place is because I was going to update the firmware but now I'm concerned. If anybody has any insight to as what I have to do to get things back to normal I would appreciate it.

  • Unknown RAID admin error - Lower Blower?

I have a red icon on my RAID admin indicating some error on one of my components.  Everything seems fine except for the lower blower where the status of it appears as "unknown".  The fan light above the lower controller set is off.  I can't recall if this light was ever on.
We are only using the upper controller (drives 1-7).  Lower controller is empty.  Do we need to have a lower (2nd) blower running anyway?  The overall status of our XRAID appears fine.  We do not have left or right batteries installed.  Also, under the message column, it's get hanging at "gathering info" for a while.

You should be able to swich the top one and the lower one. If you swap the lower one into the top and it still shows read you know that one is bad.

  • RAID works, RAID Admin stopped seeing it...

...but yet I can monitor my remote G4/RAID just fine.
    I'm running 10.4.5 on a G5 Xserve/RAID, 10.3.9 on the G4.
I tried shutting the whole mess down, disconnecting and restarting, tried plugging the ethernet cable directly to another G5, etc, but the RAID will not show up at the IP address it was given. Was there something in Tiger that messed up my monitoring capabilities or changed my monitoring IP address? Is it possible someone tinkered with something they shouldn't have, and if so, how do I get it back without halting production in the whole shop?
Or is this just another one of those problems I seem to be the only one to have??
    Xserve G5/RAID   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

No, it happens. Just happened to me last month. RAID is fine - admin would show me three yellow lights and one red light and then would "gathering information" forever and ever with the spinning wheel.
First off - do you have matching firmware versions in your RAIDs?
I was told in no uncertain terms by Apple that running different versions of RAID admin than firmware version would result in the disconnect. If you have different versions of firmware you might want different versions of RAID admin.
Second - to fix I had to turn the RAID off AND unplug cables for 30 seconds and then restart. Notice Apple doesn't call it "off" they call it "power stand-by mode". To turn it off you need to unplug it or the machine stays in stand-by mode looking for the network signals.
Third - if you're just not finding the RAID could it just be on a different network IP range? There are a couple ways to find it if it's missing where you expect it to be.
    1) Start RAID Admin and click "Add System" - if it is in your IP range it'll show up.
    2) Run Network Utility. Ping 255.255.255.255 and you will get a response form 127.0.0.1 (that's you) and if another IP address shows up that's another device - probably the RAID if you're connected directly or on a local hub.
Remember - there are 2 ethernet ports with 2 separate NICs and that 169.254.a.b is the default range of the RAID IPs. If it's not where you expect it to be I'd start there. Make sure you are connected to the one you think you set - or use a hub to connect to both simultaneously for double the scanning pleasure. Also you should check that your subnet mask is set to something generous like at least 255.255.0.0 to make sure you're casting a wide net when you search.

  • Stuck at Gathering Info...

I seem to be having a mighty strange issue. We were getting some disk errors, so a local tech rebooting the XServe. Now when it comes up, the lower controller's NIC appears, but not the upper controller. I can ping the lower controller NIC and get in through Raid Admin, but the 4 lights go
    blank - red - blank - red
and the Message column never changes from Gathering Info...
The information in the bottom panel (like Info, Arrays & Drives, etc.) never populate.
    Any help would be appreciated!

My RAID is doing similar things. I have green, red, green, green on my RAID admin screen. If I click on the red indicator, it goes to the components pane below and the lower blower has no green light. When I go to the physical RAID and look at the back of it, the lower blower does indeed have a green light.
The message to the right of the four shapes / lights stays on "Requesting update"
In addition, I can't seem to add a 6th drive to a RAID 5 array. It looks like all I can do is delete the array and rebuild it. This being a Friday and the RAID is not yet deployed, that's not entirely undesirable but this strange behavior is a bit unnerving.
Any tips from those with a RAID in service?
I'm using RAID Admin 1.3.3 and the firmware on the RAID is 1.3.2 / 1.26a. I am only using the top controller and I have all 7 drives installed with a 5-drive RAID 5 array.

  • RAID Admin Issues - not connecting

I installed my first Xserve yesterday. When I open the RAID admin and attempt to connect, all it says is gathering info... with a status wheel and it doesn't go any further. I can let it sit there all day and it doesn't say anything but that. ANy thoughts?

    Hi
Are you sure you're using the correct application? RAID Admin was intended for use with Apple's XServe RAID:
    http://www.apple.com/support/xserveraid/
Perhaps you mean RAID Utility? Launching it should show you information regarding the Apple RAID Card:

  • Xserve RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1 not quite working

I have an Xserve RAID that's currently at firmware 1.3.2/1.26a according to Xserve RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1. However, when I try to upgrade the firmware to 1.5.1 via the RAID Admin Tool 1.5.1, it just doesn't do anything--it accepts the .xfb file and then...nothing. Quitting out of the the Admin Tool and restarting still shows the firmware at 1.3.2/1.26a. Same thing if I shut down and restart the Xserve RAID from the RAID Admin tool. Any tips? There's nothing stored on the RAID system yet (the array hasn't even been created--it's a blank system) and nothing is attached to it either (I've just plugged in the ethernet links to format it first before I start attaching an Xserve G5 to it). Also, even though the lower controller is showing green and I have an ethernet cable plugged into it, I can't get any info out of it nor can I configure it with an IP address. Only the top controller seems to allow some configuration such as IP address.

    Okay, I've solved the problem.
Basically, the issue was that the lower controller wasn't seated right despite it showing a green light in RAID Admin. When I went to visually inspect it, I noticed that despite what RAID Admin 1.5.1 claimed, its light wasn't even on, let alone green. And since the lower controller handles slots 8-14 of an Xserve RAID and my slots 8-14 are totally unpopulated (empty) at the moment, it was never noticed. Now that I've reseated the lower controller, everything is visually showing green across the board and the firmware upgrade is proceeding as expected and it has upgraded the firmware from 1.3.2/1.26a to 1.5.1/1.5.1c complete with autorestart of both upper and lower controller modules.
Basic lesson learned: RAID Admin lies. If possible, visually inspect the box itself!
    Thanks to all who responded.

  • Expanding xServe RAID Array - updated info sought.

I don't want to have to reformat the RAID and I don't want to lose data because...
    1) The organization will suffer extended downtime.
    2) I don't have ready access to 3TB of empty storage to back up the entire contents of the RAID.
These and Apple's documentation are a few of the many different sources of info on this topic I've sought.
With apologies in advance to William Lloyd, who has answered many of these questions.

    My (familiar) situation.
I inherited administration responsibilities for an xServe RAID using the latest firmware (1.5.1).
The xServe is an intel xeon dual 2 GHz, running Mac OS X Server 10.6.8
The RAID had six (sigh) drives in the left controller. None in the right.
When I became admin, one of these six was dead. So I went on eBay and got three refurb ADM's.
--one to replace the dead drive.
--another to expand the RAID 5 to a full seven drives. (from 2.5T to 2.73T)
--a third to put on the shelf as a spare.
    Now then.
The replacement drive rebuilt beautifully. Happy 6 drive RAID.
I put in the 7th drive and expanded. It took several days.
I'm at the point of "merging" slices that gives everyone pause about losing data.
Much discussion here about whether this can result in added capacity without destroying data relates to earlier versions of Mac OS X Server and G5 not Intel xServes. So that's a point that I think I could use some clarity on. Can Intel Macs can expand the file system with this slice-merging function without data loss whereas Power PC Macs cannot?
Next, my RAID as I inherited it was one slice. That is to say, one volume. One partition. In RAID Admin under "Arrays and Drives" all the little drives display a [1]. They did when the RAID was degraded to 5 drives. They did when I added the 6th drive replacement. They do now, having used the Expansion function under "Advanced" to add the 7th drive.
So, next question. WAS IT EVER SLICED?
That seems to be a deal-breaker for merging slices without data loss.
For this, I looked in RAID Admin to my Events tab which dates all the way back to 2008.
I see exactly zero mentions of slicing anywhere. Come with me on a journey, won't you?
You'll see my expansion and verification up top.
The drive failure in October 2013.
Other exciting things. But no slicing.

  • RAID Admin reality check -- this software needs serious work

Folks: This is a combination rant about RAID Admin 1.5 (on OSX 10.3.9) and plea for any suggestions for things I may have missed.
RAID Admin -- an utterly crucial tool for responsibly administering an X Serve RAID, itself offered for use in mission critical applications. But RAID Admin is just one frustration after another.
    1. Can't start due to broken Java or somesuch. As reported by several others elsewhere, and experienced herre, some QT upgrade breaks ability to launch RA. Thee's a "solution" of rolling back QT -- doesn't work. There's a command-line workaround for launching, but if this is really broken Java, how can you trust other functions of RA? Anyhow, we're running it from console of X Server with non-recent-QT.
    2. Finding the RAID Array is totally hit or miss. (And BTW -- don't get hosed by the little feature that it's not sufficient to have the RAID hooked up by fiber... you also have to have the ethernet cables connected). Sometines RA finds the nearby RAIDs by itself, sometimes it finds one of two, sometimes none... figure on entering the IP addresses by hand.
    3. Serious memory leak. Leave RA running for a few hours and it ***** up >100% CPU (on dual G4), huge amount of memory, and is almost completely unresponsive (apparently due to huge disk activity to swap virtual memory). Example: after 12 hours uses 372 Meg of real memory and 1.3 G of VM. Quit and restart fixes the problem... but do you really want to do that in midst of lengthy admin operation?
    4. Array Conditioning: Seems like a great idea -- but how can you tell whether it's doing anything useful? It generates errors to the event window showing bad blocks.... OK great... what do they mean? Is it fixing them? Where is its output? Maybe we could learn that from the docs....
    5. Oh right... no docs. Still stuck on RA 1.2 docs. No mention of Array Conditioning found anywhere in Help, or at apple.com... except to advertise that the feature exists.
    Graham

William, thanks for your response, comments inline below:
I have not personally experienced any of the first 3
issues you note. And I've run RAID Admin on 30-40
different systems, and monitored 100+ RAIDs, over the
    past 3 years.
... it is good to hear a general level of satisfaction...
Are you experiencing this on just one system --
have you ever tried another machine?
What do you mean? We have one X Serve, and one RAID, and that's the one we need to admin. How would we introduce another machine into the scenario?
I'd suggest that your Java installation has
    serious issues.
Why would you suggest that? As I noted, the Java-suspected issue was not on the machine that I reported the rest of the problems on. It simple obliges us not to use RAID Admin remotely (and conveniently) since all the remote machines are up to date with updates including QT.
Also note, it's impossible for RAID Admin to have a
leak. Java has a garbage collector. Therefore, if
    there's a leak, it's a JVM problem, and not a RAID
    Admin problem.
That line of argument would be correct if the leak was due to orphaned objects -- ie: objects no longer refered to and not garbage collected. There's nothing to stop a program in whatever language just consuming more and more memory because the programmer neglected to throw away unneeded objects.
However, since posting, the Array Conditioning operation has completed, and I've noticed that the memory eating behavior has stopped. I've posted a correction on this.
For #4 and #5, I'd suggest reading the Kbase article
which details the updates and what they're good for:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302780
Where on that page are you seeing info that addresses 4 and 5? This is in fact the one page I was refering to: it advertises the feature, but where are the docs?
I'd suggest you figure out what's wrong
    with your Java installation.
No reason to suspect Java on the server, where we are running RAID Admin.
I posted some command-line options which will
give diagnostic output in other threads,
... that could be useful, could you be more specific about where you posted them, and do they cover the result of Array Conditioning?
    Thanks again for your answers,
    Graham

  • Can I use rebuild parity data in raid admin with these conditions?

4 disks in array, one went bad, replaced disk (same type of disk). Light on slot is red but in raid admin its says in event log that disk 2 is online, but when I select the drive to check info on that drive it says disk not installed. If I use the rebuild parity data function will it only rebuild the data from the 3 disks?
    will disk 2 be recognized?
It seems I am getting conflicting info from raid admin and indicator lights on disk slot. I took the drive back out checked connections and rebooted the xraid.
I thought the array would rebuild itself when the new drive was inserted, am I missing something?
    Thanks

Sometimes you have to go into the RAID utilities and use "make drive available" option.

  • Raid Admin in the dark

For some reason RAID admin 1.5.1 has just plain given up recognizing my xServe RAID. When I opened up RAID admin, the RAID unit showed but never would connect. I then did a "remove system" with the idea that I would add it back. Nothing shows.
The disk is mounted and working fine, but just cannot see it in admin.
I have checked the ethernet, and the signal seems to be good, but no communication with either side of the xServe RAID.
I have tried using the admin app from another computer also, no joy. . . .
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance. . . . .
    Ed

I finally got some time to figure this out.
I had to reset the controller:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86367
I was hesitant because I have the two sides in a RAID 0 configuration and didn't have info on how that would be affected by resetting controllers.
    Everything works normally now.
Note that the lights that are supposed to blink are on the front of the RAID unit, and they only started blinking after I released the paperclip. . . . . .

  • Drives say "not installed" in RAID Admin on lower controller

    hi all,
I'm trying to re-establish connection to an Xserve RAID which has been in storage for some time. I can see all the drives and the RAID array and its data on the upper controller no problem (using RAID admin). However the three drives on the lower controller all show a red status light, and RAID Admin actually says "not installed" for each of the three drives.
Its critical i get access to the data on these drives. Its very unlikely all three drives experienced a complete failure at the same time so don't even show up as inserted into the Xserve - does this sound like a faulty controller?
what can i do to confirm the problem, and does anyone have any suggestions for resolving it wthin the Xserve RAID and/or otherwise getting access to the data?
could I plug another empty drive i know is working into a spare bay on the lower controller and if it doesnt show up as present in RAID Admin assume that the controller is definately faulty?
if the controller is faulty, is there any way of replacing the controller and installing the three discs and getting back access to them?
I'm no Apple expert, any help appreciated.
    nathan

Hello natrat22, and welcome to the AppleBoards,
+if the controller is faulty, is there any way of replacing the controller and installing the three discs and getting back access to them?+
If you want to test the controller the easiest way is to turn the unit off, unplug it, swap the controllers and start it up again. The fan, power and controller units are completely part swappable so that should be pretty easy.
Check the Xserve RAID docs for more information: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/XserveRAID_UserGuide.PDF
The general Xserve RAID area is here: http://www.apple.com/support/xserveraid/
It might also help if you were describe the drive/RAID configuration you're trying to resurrect.
    Good luck,
    =Tod

  • RAID - cannot connect Raid Admin

For whatever reason my network settings got altered today, and ever since i have been unable to see the Xserve raid in Raid Admin. I have put the ethernet settings back to the same settings it had originally but no luck.
No lights of any colour, and a message saying connection error. So i restarted, and now there is nothing in my Raid Admin at all.I have the option to Add System...but i have no clue about the info that is required!
    Any suggestions please?

Well, if you know the IP addresses, you can enter this in the Add System field.
If you don't, and it has dhcp enabled on one of the controllers, you cn connect with a direct cable.
If both negative, and you know at least the IP range, you can do a ping sweep and find the address.
    Hope this helps

  • HT5085 Gathering Info About your iTunes Library - Keep getting Network error

I bought iTunes Match yesterday, and so far have not been able to use it.
It gets to Stage 1: Gathering Info About Your iTunes Library and makes progress, but right at the end an error box appears saying:
"We could not complete your iTunes request. The network connection was reset.
Make sure your network connection is active and try again"
Well I know the network connection is active as I was able to be charged for iTunes Match and have had no problems making other purchases. I went to Advance > Run Diagnostics Tests from Help in iTunes and ran the Network Connectivity Diagnostics and it reported no problems.
Now I know how much Apple hate giving back refunds, but if people can't help, does anyone know how I can get my money back? If I click "Report a Problem" it simply takes me to the help pages. I tried contacting support but I received an email saying they can't help.
I'm getting quite frustrated now, so I'm reaching out and hoping someone can help me?
I've copied the diagnostic results below:

@ deggie, I wasn't threatening ANYONE. I was simply saying how frustrating this has become, seeing how I have been trying on my own to figure this issue out for more then a month with no results. Like I said in the beginning, I have not used any other account to purchase apps or other products on my phone. I have only ever used one account. There are 23 apps that are saying they can't sync. It directs me to authorize the computer, which I do but it doesn't change the outcome. If I proceed, I lose those 23 apps correct? Do I also lose all my text messages saved, and other things such as documents in the "notes"?
