Random Selection in SQL query
I have a query or SQL I am writing where I need to select records in this fashion.
At most 2 records for each username, and those 2 records should be random.
there are many fields that I am bringing in via my SQL; but the username there are typically around 20 unique usernames.
The data itself without a random statement added to it returns approximately 2000 records.
If someone could assist me in the syntax of the portion of the SQL that could attain the results I am looking for, I would appreciate it.
I've never delved into a Random selection method before.
Someone mentioned to me that I could use a rank() statement; but I have no clue how to use that.
then someone else mentioned to use dbms_random.value which is another one I don't know how to use.
Please let me know if you have any ideas that could assist me.

How do I modify the WHERE clause in my SQL query?
This seems like such a straight-forward part of the report design, but I'm fairly new to Crystal Reports and I only have experience with modifying reports someone else has already written. In this particular case, I just need to modify the WHERE clause of the SQL query. I can select Show SQL Query and see what statement is being used to select data, but I can't find where to modify it since it's grayed out. I see how to change the selection criteria, parameters, grouping, etc...just not the WHERE clause. The report is linked to a database used for reporting with a table created and populated by a stored procedure. I don't need to modify the stored procedure because the data I want to filter by is currently in the table--I just don't know how to filter by what I need. Here's part of the query:

I would like to add another crewid to the WHERE clause. Thanks for any input.1.Open the report in the crystal designer
2.Go to the field explorer(if hidden go to view menu->field explorer)
3.Rt. click on the database fields->choose database expert
4.Now you will see 2 columns-Available DataSource and Selected Tables
5.Rt. click on the object(ex.command) available in the Selected Tables column->Choose Edit command
6.A new Modify Command window will appear,here you can edit your SQL Query
I get to step 4 and I see the two columns including my database and the report table, but there is no command object available. If I right-click on my table, I can just view the Properties. ??
As for the other tip to modify the record selection: I don't see anywhere the other crewid values are set and if I add the one I'm missing, it doesn't modify the existing SQL Query and when I preview the report it throws off the results so that no data displays??
I'm using Crystal Reports 11.5 if that makes a difference. Thanks again. -
Error while executing a sql query for select

ORA-01652: unable to extend temp segment by 128 in tablespace PSTEMP i'm getting this error while i'm executing the sql query for selecting the data.I am having 44GB of temp space, while executing the below query my temp space is getting full, Expert please let us know how the issue can be resolved..
1. I dont want to increase the temp space
2. I need to tune the query, please provide your recomendations.

How to get resultset from procedure having dynamic select sql query ?

I have created a procedure, in which there is dynamic select query. The procedure has one out put parameter which gives error code. When I compile that procedure it compiles successufully. When I run it it executes successfully and gives output error code. But I don't know how to get resultset of that dynamic select sql query. I need that.

Multiple Select List looping thru PL/SQL function body returning SQL query

I have a Multiple Select List. I want to loop through the values from the Select List and process them in a PL/SQL function body returning a SQL query. Currently, my code only returns the SQL SELECT results of one item in the select list. How do I change my code to make it return the results of all of the items in the select list? (I tested it and it is definitely picking up all the values in the select list).

First, I would be careful of introducing SQL Injection possibilities. Any time I see
'Select ... ' || :P123_FOO || ' ... '
I worry about sql injection. In your case you are converting :P50_SELECTED_INSTRUMENTS into selected_items and then selected_items into s. So when I see
'WHERE TO_CHAR(orig_geo_loc_sys) LIKE ''' || s ||'%'' '||
I think, "I could use sql Injection and hack this."
So, I would do some validation on :P50_SELECTED_INSTRUMENTS or some other method to avoid this.
I'm not certain I understand your query. Do you really intend to allow the user to select the beginning of a string and then find all rows that start with that string? Or, do you just want to let them find when it matches the string. This is one way if you want to do matching:

Setting current values in Multiple Select List in SQL Query based Report
Hi,
I have a report based on a sql query that contains a multiple select list. Unfortunately I cannot get the multiple select list to display the current values (p_value) correctly. I have created a page item, :p311_current_versions, that is set using a pre-header process and it returns a value with a colon delimited format e.g. '10.1.2.1.0:10.1.2.2.0'. Then this item is used in the sql query to set the current value (p_value) of the apex_item.select_list_from_query function. However when the table is displayed, instead of having two entries, 10.1.2.1.0 and 10.1.2.2.0 selected, it has an extra entry '10.1.2.1.0:10.1.2.2.0' selected.

I don't think this is possible using the apex_item package. The select_list_from_query function accepts only a single value for the second parameter.

I have a search form with the following field item variables...
P11_DEPT_ID (select list based on dynamic LOV from depts table)
P11_VALID (select list based on static Yes/No LOV)
A report on the columns of the Validations table is shown based on the values in the search form. So far, my sql query for the report is...

Can anyone help me to extend my query to include this situation?

The above changes to my first idea I did because of time portion of the DATE datatype in Oracle and therefore the wrong result for today.
For understandings:
1.) TRUNC removes the time part of DATE
2.) The difference of to date-values is the number of days between.
3.) SIGN is the mathematical function and gives -1,0 or +1 according to an negative, zero or positiv argument.
4.) DECODE is like an IF.
Inspect your LOV for the returning values. According to my example they shoul be 'yes' and 'no'. If your values are different, you may have to modify the DECODE.

Form on a SQL Query - doesn't work with SELECT * - bug or feature ?
When I do this,
Create Page -> Page with Component -> Form -> Form on a SQL Query -> SELECT * FROM EMP
I do not get any items displayed and it creates a simple HTML region / page. Do we have to necessarily specify the column names ?
Iam looking at a way to see if any addition of columns in the table does not involve IT intervention in recreating the form.
When we try to create with Form on a SQL Query, then shouldn't it be similar to the Report where the same thing works, if I give SELECT function_returning_columns() from DUAL even then the same thing happens where it creates an ITEM called functions_returning_columns() it creates HTML region

Since this is for example, I didn't include code for Checksum and hardcoded empno = condition and have provision for 9 columns. I made some changes and tried saving it and I was able to do it.
I altered the table to add a column / drop a column and when I relogin, Iam able to see the changes.

How-To populate SELECT LIST default value from SQL Query
OK, I've done my homework, and did not find my answer in the Forum, so here it is.
I have a Page that displays fields from a SQL Query. The Page also has below that radiogroups, checkboxes, and Select Lists to allow the user to change values in the fields that are displayed at the top of the Region. I am able to pre-populate the radiogroups and checkboxes by performing a SELECT in the 'Source value or expression' of the Source area of the Page Item.
However, I am unable to do the same for the Select List fields. Their default value ends up being the first value in the LOV ('-- None --' for NULL values). Source Used: Only when current value in session state is null. Source Type: SQL Query. Also, when I first go into the Page when running it, and check the Session State values, they are all null, so I don't understand why the field is not populated by the SQL Query statement as the radiogroups and checkboxes are.
Any suggestions??? I've tried all sorts of combinations.Thank you for the suggestion.
I had considered that, but cannot do so, because we are using Oracle Application Express more for development than for data containment.
We have all our data in an Oracle 10.g DB which is separate from the OAEX server, and the OAEX app will reference that data via VIEWs and DB LINKs. We are doing so primarily as an added data security layer, where the data is housed separate from the app, in case the Web site is ever compromised. The data that can be viewed is restricted to a subset of the actual data that is available.
Since the data is on a separate server, (I assume) we will not be able to set the source type to Database column, because (I asume) that is dependent upon the data being housed by the OAEX server.
That still leaves me with having to populate the field with a SELECT statement from the Oracle DB. This unfortuneately is almost a show-stopper for me because of down-stream processing data requirements. Have not been able to come up with contingencies yet. -

How do you select a clob column in an SQL query report?
I must be missing something fundamental as there is practically no help on this on the forum.

Sounds easy??? I get no data appearing in the clob column. Doesn't work in SQL Workshop either. What's the catch??

When I run your query, I get NULL for sequence_no on the last 2 rows, where building_id=3000. The numbers 99 and 100 don't seem to occur in either table. Did you post the worng sample data and/or results?

Again, I don't see where the 100 comes from. The results I get are:

It looks like you cahnged your sample data from

insert into s_test values(11,3000,'N',NULL);to
insert into s_test values(10,3000,'N',99);
insert into s_test values(11,3000,'N',100);The queries I posted are niow getting 99, like you requested. -

Here's an example of (2)
WITH got_d_name AS
SELECT A, B, C, MAX(CASE...) AS "D_NAME"
FROM...
WHERE...
SELECT A, B, C, D_NAME, FunctionX (B, C, D_NAME)
FROM got_d_name
;A column alias (like d_name) can be referenced in the ORDER BY clause of the query where it was defined, but that's the only place in that query where it can be referenced.
