I have removed avast security and repaired disc permissions .Also carried ot AHT
Im in a panic now as well as my machine  !

So, is Avast still showing up in the crash logs?
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Thanks Vitaliy but I have multiple requests with huge amount of data to be deleted.
So I was wondering if the following steps are correct
    1. delete DB indices
    2. delete BIA indices
    3. delete requests from cube
    4. rebuild DB indices
    5. rebuild BIA indices
Are there any steps to ensure that indices are rebuilt correctly?

    Answer to self!
Xerox has just released an Update "Phaser_3140-3155_OS_10-8_print_Instaler_v5.0.0" this has resolved all my problems and may be usefull for some other people. Go to Website "http://www.support.xerox.com/support/phaser-3140" for download.

  • 2 Random contact requests

So I just logged in to skype and found 2 random contact requests from I presume strangers. I have no idea who they are. I stupidly replied to one but got a reply back. So I was wondering was this a potential scammer? I've bot blocked and declined the contact request as well as launching a full computer scan and there is no potential threats found. Was I paranoid or was this a scam.

In your privacy setting there is an option to only allow messages, calls and such from people in your contacts. Just double check to make sure it's all checked properly

  • Downgrading from Lion on Intel iMac (2008) problems

After upgrading to Lion on our iMac (2008) [Intel Core 2 Duo], which had been originally running 10.6.8, we began experiencing lots of strange problems (intermittent crashes, freezing). On Saturday, the whole computer just shutdown and couldn't be restarted.
I attempted to install a new OS from a Snow Leopard CD purchased when we upgraded from the original software (10.5.2) by first building a new partition (Mac OS Journaled, GUID) and then installing Snow Leopard, but at the very end of the process, got an error message stating the installation failed.
I then went back to the original installation disks that came with the iMac (10.5.2) and did the same process and have been able to get Leopard running. From that point, I thought I could pop the Snow Leopard install CD in and do the upgrade, but got the same error message stating the installation failed.
I'm now back to installing the original OS again (10.5.2), but am unsure how to go about getting Snow Leopard to install. Do I need to go through the software updates to get it up to 10.5.8 before installing Snow Leopard, or has Lion just done some irreparable harm to the system.
At various points during this whole process, I've sometimes been able to boot from the CD from startup by pressing C, but sometimes that fails, and I have to hold down the option key. Sometimes that even fails, and I've had to clear the memory, and restart, going through various iterations just to get the Mac to see the CD.
Any advice on how to get from Leopard to Snow Leopard would be much appreciated. Before Lion was involved, there were no problems in the upgrade process, but now that I'm trying to rebuild, it seems like things are going massively awry.
Also, it seems like the specs on Lion indicate it should be stable on this type of machine, but clearly it isn't. I've read about some incompatabilities with graphics cards (we have a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS), but I don't know if this was the problem or not. If anyone knows what could have happened with the Lion issue, I would be curious about that too.

After "successfully" installing a version of 10.5.2 onto the iMac, I ran a Verify Permissions and received a long list of Open Error 5 problems, which could not be fixed using the Disk Utility on the Mac itself, nor with a downloaded copy of DiskWarrior. Also, when verifying the hard drive, there was an invalid sibling link error, and it stopped the verification process - there was no option to repair.
I'm a little confused because I started the clean install from the Disk Utility via the installation CD by building what I thought was a "clean" partition.
Is the next step to try and run disk utility from the install CD to try and fix these errors?
I now have a copy of Disk Warrior (downloaded) sitting on another machine and my Time Machine. I'm not sure how these could be useful in the rebuild process, but if so, please let me know.
    Thanks so much,
    Marie

  • 2008 Macpro random shutdowns

I have a Mac Pro 2008 and it was the best computer ever.
Lately about 2 months ago it started to randomly shutdown.
The computer would crash with no indication, the screen goes
to black and after about 10 seconds, the fan would run at full speed.
All the while the power never cuts off.
    what is going on ?
    any experience ?
Help is much appreciated as I can't get any work going on at this time.

Start by cleaning out all the accumulated dust.
Do a smc and pram reset.
Boot from your recovery partition and repair/verify your drives (not repair permissions).
You might want to add a temperature monitor like iStat Pro, iStat Menus, Temperature Monitor, Hardware Monitor, etc.  Maybe somthing is overheating.
Consider reseating your video card and dimms.

  • Re I-Movie.  "Communication Error" is what I get when I try and send a clip from my Sony camera to the IMovie program in my IMAC 2008 Intel Chips.  The IMovie program has worked well for several years - up to now.  What has gone wrong?

Re I-MOVIE.  I am getting a "Communication Error" when I try and send a clip to the IMovie
program in my IMAC 2008 Intel Chip computer.  This is the first time in 3 years that the
program has not worked.  What has gone wrong?

    Hi
Have no idea - But if it is a new problem with exactly the same kind of material that was previously used. Then my trouble shooting guide might help.
    If You
    • used a new Camera - file codec might be a sort that don't work
    • Your main hard disk might get too filled up
    Else try
    Trouble
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
    • In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

  • Apple TV sharing from IMAC 20 inch (2008)

is there a tutorial on how to share from my 2008 iMac to a phillips hd tv using apple tv?

Thanks Brian, Internet sharing is the term used in my iMac settings for using the iMac as a Wi-Fi network, we use this for iPhones, laptops etc as we dont have a wireless router. Did buy a wireless router but couldn't get it to work so thought we'd just keep using the iMac as it worked fine, until now. Apple TV connected to this network sucessfully for watching movies etc but not for Home Sharing so I wanted to find out if this was normal.
I have just spoken to Apple who let me know that this is indeed normal and that this type of network will work for movies etc but not for Home Sharing. So as you say will need to get a wireless router that works, or connect via ethernet (I didn't realise this was possible, but can see it now after going back to the little black manual)
Thanks Brian, thanks Winston, thanks Apple.

  • Can I install 10.6 OS X from USB drive? Imac 2008 24"

    Can I install 10.6 OS X from USB drive? Imac 2008 24"

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can, but it's a bit difficult because you have to copy the Snow Leopard disc content to a USB drive. There are a lot of pages which have got the steps to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the USB drive, like this page > http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html

  • Macbook won't detect external display anymore - Random shutdown injury??

    Hi,
my Macbook has the dreaded random shutdown thing happening, often it can't even get through the startup sequence. If I reset the PMU and PRAM and check the disk every week I can keep it running. Applecare are making not particularly helpful suggestions like "run it in safe mode" - hello people, random means it can take days to happen again... I use this computer for work so I need it at full capacity every day!!!
Anyway, enough angry ranting. The casualty of today's RS and subsequent PRAM PMU resetting is my external display (Viewsonic LCD). The macbook is no longer sending signals to it (display says "no signal"). When I ask the macbook to "detect displays" nothing happens. I have restarted the macbook several times and unplugged and replugged the display connection it doesn't help. Yes, I have the AC power cable plugged in on the Macbook (I know it doesn't like talking to the screen if I don't).
The display and macbook have always worked fine together in the past...
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to test for causes or fix this display related problem?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

You don't mention ever having brought the problem to Apple's attention, or what resulted from your request for Apple's help with it. This isn't a universal or widespread problem. It may be a hardware fault in your own equipment that needs to be resolved with a repair, or it may be a software problem (corrupt file, incompatible software conflict, update needed, etc., etc.). You seem to think Apple should have fixed it for you without your lifting a finger, and you're eager to complain about Apple's lack of support. But you've offered nothing to indicate that Apple even knows you need support. You do have to ask for it. Have you done so?
We have no idea what steps you've taken to try to narrow down the possibilities, e.g., making sure the monitor is turned on; trying a different video cable as iVmichael has suggested; testing the monitor with the same cable on a different computer; testing a different monitor with the same cable and then with a diferent cable on your computer; substituting a different cable adapter, if you are using one; applying all applicable system software updates and then Repairing Permissions and Repairing Disk; starting in Safe Mode and seeing whether the monitor is recognized and activated then; seeing whether the monitor is detected in System Profiler; and so on. You may have done some of these things, but you haven't told us about them or about the results.

  • To Everyone with Random Shutdowns! (Solved! REALLY!)

    Hey all,
I had posted about a week back about my Macbook (Core duo white, late 2006), it was having the same symptoms as some of the others with the known random shutdown syndrome (RSS). Like many others I had thought it was the end of my macbook and the logicboard needed replacing because that is what the 'genius' people do, but I was still wondering what would cause it. It would randomly shut off! (or so I thought) I'd be typing in Safari, watching a youtube video, and even playing games, it would just shut off and I could hear the hard drive spin down. I'd restart and it would do it again sometimes right away, sometimes hours later.
This got me to thinking (like others have said) that it must be an issue with over heating. To test my theory I backed up my HD, and tried to reinstall Snow Leopard after zeroing the HD (as a fresh install). During the install process the Macbook's fan started to get loud and then it happened, it died again! So, this proved to me that it is NOT a software/OS issue at all, which means the said efforts in other posts of changing screen saver and energy saver settings had nothing to do with the cause! Aha moment!
I thought to myself... something is making it shutdown, obviously, and has to do with too much heat as the fan was going crazy even while reinstalling the OS. After reading many posts on different support forums I came accross the possibility that it could be the heatsink and/or sensor that is attached to it. I also found out that this "RSS" only applies to the non-unibody, core duo, and core 2 duo macbooks... you know what that means?
These models are the only ones with the shared memory and GPU on the same heatsink! GAH! A possible solution presents itself? To make a long post even longer... I removed the keyboard, carefully unscrewed the heatsink and fan and what did I see? Cracked and dried out thermal paste on the CPU AND GPU, they are both under the same heatsink after all, this was bad, really bad.
Luckily I had some Arctic Silver thermal paste in a tube from years ago when I upgraded my PowerMac CPU. Using some rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth I removed the crud on the heatsink, processor, and GPU (I might add that there was way too much paste on there in the first place). I waited an extra few minutes to make sure the alcohol evaporated, and then I applied a small (dime sized) amount of thermal past directly onto the two chips, I aligned the heatsink carefully and gave it a very small gentle push down onto the chips, reattached the sensor wire to the mainboard, and screwed the heatsink back in.
After putting the keyboard back on and making sure all screws were in... I immediately turned on the laptop and reinstalled the OS. The OS install took approximately 10 mintues! (crazy!) The last time I did that it took over 30 mins to install! I was stunned!
After the OS installed I let the computer idle and shut down, I let it sit for about an hour to allow the paste to contract as it cooled. After starting up again I immediately downloaded Temperature Monitor and installed it (I did have it running when my mac had RSS by the way), here are the results to prove my theory:
    My Macbook with RSS:
    CPU1 and CPU2 Idle temp - 114 degrees (F)
    Heatsink temp - 128 degrees (F)
Approximate over heating temp - 184 degrees (F) (causing the heatsink sensor to shutdown the laptop)
My Macbook with new high quality thermal paste:
    Idle temp of CPU1, CPU2, and GPU - 77 degrees (F)
    Heatsink temp - 84 degrees (F)
Running temp with adobe CS4, youtube, and typing this message - 103 degrees (F)
Pretty amazing if you ask me!
Before I applied the thermal paste my Macbook took at least a minute to start up with a fresh OS install, now it only takes about 15 seconds! I have not heard the fan spin up and go crazy since! And I can't even explain to you how much fast it is now!
This does prove that Random shutdown syndrome (RSS) is caused ONLY by your GPU over heating due to old thermal paste between the chips and heatsink! A design flaw by Apple? probably not because thermal paste will crack and dry over time.
This also proves that energy conversion to data in the chips can decrease because of over heating, causing the computer performance to dramatically drop!
So before you take your out-of-warranty macbook to Apple or a repair shop, see what your internal temp readings are and try to replicate the problem with over heating your CPU/GPU! This was a 10 minute fix! I am still amazed at how much faster everything is, and haven't had a random shutdown since! I hope this helps alot of people that think they are out of luck and have to pay to get it fixed!
    - Cory -

I too have this problem as well and it has been getting worse lately, I don't know what to do anymore. Here is a little info about my macbookPro. I have the late 2008 unibody model, i bought it in late 2009 Refurbished from Apple. Recently my mac has been turning off out of nowhere. I may be doing something and all of a sudden it just shuts off, it usually happens faster when i start to open up more programs like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro. My mac is out of warranty now and i dont know how much apple is going to charge me to fix it. i mean they want 50 bucks just to talk to them on the phone (ridiculous if you ask me)!.

  • Are the replacement Heatsinks fixing people's Random Shutdown problems?

Is the replacement heatsink (the shorter one) still the method of choice from Apple for fixing Random Shutdown problems?
Is it working for people who've had it done recently?

Does this max out the CPU?
Yes. People who advocate this are testing to see if it's possible to induce a "random" shut down.
Why would anyone want to do that?
Good question. I've seen two reasons put forward: (a) It's better to make it happen now yourself rather let it strike out of the blue at some later date (and if running this test doesn't induce RSDs you can feel confident that your computer is probably immune); (b) If you take your MacBook to an Apple Store it could be useful for demonstrating to an Apple "genius" that your computer has the problem, especially if your shutdowns are infrequent.
    (personally, I don't agree with (a))

  • Overheating or random shutdown?

Last night I while I was using my iMac it randomly shutdown twice, one right after another.
I have had the random shutdown problem in the past but have not experienced one for quite some time. (I had taken several steps to fix, including running the disk utilities and deleting some power management file. Whatever I did seemed to be working.)
I had also been using iMovie, exporting movies, all day. I had also been heavily using iPhoto and Firefox, moving photos out and onto Facebook. The case was hot to the touch and iStatpro said that the power supply was around 159 degrees F and the CPU was around 135 degrees F. Is it possible I triggered some sort of safety cutoff?
Please help me out here. I love this computer but the random shutdowns are totally killing it. Thanks in advance.

    Hello All,
Here's my experience with unexpected shutdowns...
My 20" Intel iMac is 6 months old - August 08.
    - After shutting it down one evening as per normal, it just wouldn't turn on the next morning. Nothing I did worked: different power socket, changed the fuse (UK plug) etc. When I had just about given up carrying it around the house, it suddenly came back to life. Went to the shop to buy milk, got back and off it was again. Weird. So I spoke to Apple Care who suggested I take it down to the Apple Store in central London, UK. I laboriously did so (try taking the underground with an iMac... not fun) and dropped it off mid afternoon.
    - Got a call the same evening from Apple Store: my iMac turned on fine first time (typical), tests were being run on it (basically stress testing the processor with multiple processes), and it was fine. No fault was found, I could go and pick it up.
    - So I take it back home the next day, again battling with London commuters with my heavy, bulky iMac box and plug it in. All fine. Work all day on it as per normal (nothing intensive). Then at about 10pm, it just turns off. No warning, nothing. Just off, and this time its staying off. I let it cool down, nothing. Diffent plugs, nothing. Change the plug fuse, nothing. Next morning, nothing. Its dead.
    - So I head off directly to the Apple Store again, iMac in hand, and battle it out again with London commuters on the underground. I explain the situation, am promised this will be a priority repair...
    - Eventually, after 10 days (Christmas got in the way), I get a call that it is ready. Two items of hardware were changed, namely 1) power supply and 2) Cable/DC Power/SATA/Inverter. Though none of them were actually faulty, they are the items that can cause sudden shutdowns...
    - I pick it up, and it seems fine since. But upon switching it on, I noticed the whole bottom half of my dispay was dim. Bright at the top, grey at the bottom... Another chat with Apple Care (by then am on first name terms with the whole team), we do various hardware resets to no avail. Am advised to drop it off at Apple. So off I go to the Apple Store again.
And I just got it back again.. with a new LCD display...
So the cost of all repairs to my 6 months old iMac is now more than half of the overall cost of the machine. Still, credit to Apple for not quibbling on any of the above issues, and fixing them (relatively) quickly and efficiently.
Now lets hope my iMac stays on and stays bright...

  • Do the newer macbooks also suffer random shutdowns?

Hi there, I'm considering buying a Mac, and I'm stumped for choice. I'm choosing between an iMac 17 inch to replace my PC, or a Macbook for portability. If I am going to be buying a Macbook, I want to know if Apple tested them for random shutdowns first, just so I know that I won't be buying a machine that I'll have to send out within the first week of recieving it. If the new macbooks (as in the ones with Core 2 Duo processors) still suffer random shutdowns I'll probably go for an iMac instead.

You're claim that everyone who owns 1 (22 out of 25 people) has a problem is total hogwash. Geez, why would you say such a thing? I recently sold my Core Duo BlackBook, one of the first 500 off the assembly line), and never once had a problem with it - ever! I really didn't want to sell it because it was such a fine workhorse but I wanted 801.n on my home network and needed a C2D to get that. I carried it around on all my hospital rounds and it contained every one of my patient's health records. If MacBooks were as you claimed then Jobs must of personally touched my BlackBook with the luck of the Gods!
Before it was even sold I bought another C2D BlackBook, loaded it with 3Gig of RAM (yes, you CAN upgrade to 3Gig) and the thing is a most excellent machine. Faster, sleeker, and works like a champ. I transferred all my patient's records within 20 minutes.
My advice: don't believe the naysayers. Especially here. These forums were established to assist MacBook users with all issues, including problems. But the number of problems is miniscule and those you read here come from less than 1% of the MacBook owners.
The Core Duo BlackBook sold for just $200 less then what I paid for it and it was fully loaded with everything I could put on it when I originally purchased it. I used it a full year (May to May) and figured the $200 was a year's worth of cheap rental.
BTW, I got a better BlackBook for less money this time around. Faster CPU, larger hard drive, more RAM and a superior laptop to those of my colleagues - what more could a geek physician ask for?
    Tim...
