Range Expander Speed?

I installed a range expander (WRE54G v3) to expand my wireless range.  My singal strength went from low to excellent but when doing that I went from about 3 Mbps to about 1.5 Mbps.  Is there anyway to get the same speed out of my range expander as I get out of my Linksys router?

Very short answer to what I think is your real question: No.
Slightly longer and more technically accurate answer to the question you actually asked: Sure, you are getting the same speed (roughly.)
How can that be? Simple. The range expander AKA repeater runs at the same speed. But everything is getting transmitted twice, once by the router and a second time by the range expander (and of course in the other direction once by your wireless adapter and once by the range expander.) Speed is the same, but net throughput is halved.

  • Range and speed on N

I have a WRT150N router and my computer has an N adaptor.  I had issues with the range, so I changed the settings to Wide Radio Band, channel 11.  Now, the range works fine, but I notice a drop in speeds as I move away from the router, which I know is normal.  The issue is that while when I'm near the router I get around 130mbps, but that drops to around 30mbps in the bedroom.  Assuming I can't move the router, is there a way I can boost the signal (whether by software or new hardware) so that I can get better coverage at the higher speeds?  I also have a computer with a G adaptor (which seems to work fine at this point).
    Thanks.

Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly
the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the
router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power
cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable
to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug
in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
Open the setup page of router using 192.168.1.1 then put in the
password as admin...all you need to do is do the wireless settings such
as Radio Band Frequency to Standard 20 MHZ frequency, channel to 11.
Also, the advanced wireless settings to Beacon Interval=50,Frag
    thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet
Requests & it will definately work!!!
Also, to expand the range you could the wireless Range Expander.

Can I line up range expanders, like if I have one in a place and I need some more range could I put one after another. Please help!?Message Edited by AP19 on 02-05-200706:23 PM

Hi… Yes, however you speed you drop by half after every range expander that you connect to. So your wireless through put will reduce after you connect another Range Expander

  • Range Expander (WRE54Gv.3) and strength issue

I have a wireless network connected to a CISCO WRT54GS2 V1 wireless router  - I also have a Range Expander (WRE54Gv.3) that I am using approx 50 feet from my router.  The link lights are both blue, I have set up the expander per the directions and I do see a SMALL increase in speed with the expander in place - - the funny thing is if while the PC in the room 50 feet away is on and we unplug and replug in the ROUTER the speed jumps from 5mbps to 54mbps every time.  Any ideas??  Any feedback would be great.  It has me stumped.

When you use Range expander in the network then wireless speed will decrease.
Try to ping the IP address of WRE and make sure that you are getting replies from the range expander. If you get replies from Range expander then it is communicating with the router and configured properly.
Try changing some advanced wireless settings on the router. Open the setup page of the router and go to wireless tab. Click on Advanced wireless settings sub tab. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS and fragmentation threshold to 2306 Save the settings.

  • What does the range expander do exactly?

Hi, I would like to know, what does the range expander does exactly, does it only relay a signal farther away or does it actualy amplify the signal. I would like to know because right now there are 3 computers in my house that are only receiving a "weak" signal and I would like to boost that... I can't pass wires through the walls so it has to be wireless...
    thanks in advance

The range expandr does increase the range of your wireless signal , However the throughput is reduce by half eg: if you are getting a speed of 54Mbps from the router to the range expander , then from the range expander to the PC your transmit rate be be approx 22Mbps . Every consequent range expander you connect will increase the range , but again the transmit speeds will be reduced by half.

  • How do I know my range expander is working?

My range expander is set up witd the same SSID and security as my router.  I can telnet into the device, but the wireless signal has not improved where the range expander is placed.
My son's xbox is about 20ft from the expander, and the "number of bars" is the same whether the expander is plugged in or not.
Since the Xbox connects to wireless router, it must be configured correctly to be on the network.
How can I test this or verify it is working.
    Both blue lights are on

What is model number of your wireless router?
Plug in the power to the Range Expander. Try to ping the IP address of your range expander when it is connected only to the power. If you get replies from the range expander then it is communicating with the router and configured properly.
If there is no improvement in signal strength then try to upgrade the firmware on the range expander.

  • Safari won't connect to Linksys Range Expander

Hope some one can end my sleepless nights...
I have read the posts on this forum for this type of problem and have followed the advice given but still can't get my neighbours Mac laptop to connect to my wireless network
I have a Desktop PC running windows XP and two laptops running xp and vista. The network is a Belkin ADSL+2 modum and Netgear Wireless Rangemax router WPN824 which is wired by Ethernet to the PC while the Laptops hook into the network wirelessly. I am running WEP encryption on the router.
I hooked up the Linksys WRE54G Range Expander and finally got it confugured on my network and placed it on the edge of my signal but my neighbour has a Mac and can't piggy back. The airport say it is connected to my network but we can't open a page and get on the web. Interestingly she is able to hook up to my router when in my unit with the Airport using the WEP password and I can take my laptop in her unit and connect automatically to my network thru the RE as the signal is excellent.
After searching various threads here and forums elsewhere I configured the Mac's IPv4 to "Use DHCP with manual address" I assigned an IP address of 192.168.1.50 (as advised in the posts) , applied and rebooted - no luck! I have searched all types of sites for any information as I am only a novice
My router is the DHCP Server and has an IP of 192.168.1.1 and subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0. It's starting IP address is 192.168.1.2 and ends with 192.168.1.254. The Ip address of the Range expander is 192.168.1.240 and the subnet mask is the same while the gateway is 192.168.1.1 (router IP) It has WEP encryption enabled using the same keys as the router. Didn't know how to ping using the Mac so no info there sorry.
When we assigned an IP address in the ethernet settings on the mac we configured IPv4 "Using DHCP with manual address" as per advice from other posts. We then only had the option to set an IP address and nothing else.
When we go to "Network" we have a green light next to AirPort and it says "Airport is connected to the network JLay (my SSID). You are connected to the internet via AirPort".
We tried various other types of configurations with IPv4 but nothing works
Any advice is appreciated as I've now hit a brick wall

Seems that I needed to type in the DNS server address (10.0.0.2) when I configured IPv4 manually. I used an IP address for the MAC 192.168.1.50 (as suggested) and same subnet mask as the router and used the IP address for the router in the router box.
    What a relief!

  • Range Expander with a WMP54GX4 SRX400 pci card

I am having a great deal of trouble receiving a signal from the various radio signals here. Can I use a range expander with this card or do I have to utilize a router? Is there an expander that will work with my product or is there a product to extend my current antenna wire so that I can move the unit around the room?
    Thanks...

I am not using a router...I have a pci card with an antenna. I need to find out if I can use a range expander with this card or do I need to install something else, if there is something else.
I appreciate anything you can recommend.
    Thanks.

  • Reset range expander on WRT300N router without losing security on network

Frequently I get a red blinking light on my range expander.  It won't reset until I unplug and then reset my router.  When I do this, of course, I lose the security settings on my network.  Any suggestions on resetting the range expander without going through all this mess?  I'm new to networking and know virtually nothing about security PLUS I'm disabled so resetting it all is an enormous pain if there's a better way.  The red blinking light usually comes on when the router or range expander has been moved when I'm cleaning.
Many thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I am not representing Linksys. Follow these steps Access the setup page of the router by launching an Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as "admin" (Without quotes) click on ok. Click on the Wireless tab on the Setup page- Here Wireless Network mode
should is  mixed- Change it to G- Only ... click save settings ...

  • Where can I buy the WRE54G Version 3 Range Expander???

What retailer (online or physical storefront) sells the WRE54G Range Expander Version 3?  After looking on ebay and Amazon.com, the pics that show up on those two sites appear to be version 1 (without the ethernet port).
Can someone give me a list of stores that sells the latest version or where you bought your version 3?  Also, who has the best price?  Lastly, will I be able to tell the version on the retail box?  I'm sure the version is noted on the expander but will the retail box give some clue without opening it???
Thanks for any help in advance...

I got my WRE54G Ver.3 from Circuit City. I couldn't find any way to check the version without opening the box though. It costs $99.99 Here is the link:

  • Can't access range expander's home page.

So I just upgraded my range expander's firmware after a long time trying (great success!), but now I can't access the site once more... I used the default of 192.168.1.240 first, but now, it won't work. Could upgrading the firmware have changed the IP?

No it is not possible that the upgrade ... changes the Ip address for the Device .... once you upgraded the Range Extender ..... reset it for few seconds .... while holding the reset ... unplug & replug the power cable ....
Assign static Ip to the Local Area Connection & try to ping the Ip - 192.168.1.240 ....
See if it opens the setup page ....

  • Range Expander Setup problems

When setting up the device I can get all the way to where I should get the congratulations screen, Instead an Error dialog box appears with "Cannot get Confirmation Reply"
I'm pretty sure all the information is entered correctly, Is this a Linksys error or a Windows Xp error?

    HI...
To verify that the expander is configured or not. After running the CD.....unplug the power to the expander ......disconnect the ethernet connection to the expander ........wait for 3o seconds and then connect only t he power back to the expander. Check the lights on the expander both should be Blue.
In case if there is one Blue and one RED light. Follow the followings steps.
Connect a computer directly to the RE using an ethernet cable. Assign static IP address to the computer i.e IP address 192.168.1.10
                                                               Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
                                                               Default Gateway 192.168.1.240
Open Internet explorer ......In the address bar type http://192.168.1.240. This will prompt for username and password ....Enter the username and password that you have set for the wireless range expander. (Default password is admin with no username).
When the configuration page is fully loaded. Configure the expander with the same wireless settings at that of the wireless router.
Make sure that the wireless settings on the router and the expander are exactly the same...with the same wireless security.
Save the settings before exiting.  Once the settings are saved...disconnect the expander from the computer and set the computer back to obtain IP address automatically. Unplug  the power to the router and also to the expander.......wait for 30-60 seconds and then connect the power back to the router first......wait untill all the lights on the router are steady......reconnect the power back to the expander....
Check the lights on the expander. Both should be blue.
In case if the lights are still blue and red get back with the model number of the router and also the firmware version. Also Check what is the firmware version of the expander.

  • WRE54G Range Expander, appears to be connected but...

I have auto configured the range expander.
I have 2 blue lights, on the link and the activity
when I try to ping the expander, results are: timed out
How can I tell if its connected to MY unsecured SSID or my neighbors?

As you have mentioned that you see 2 Blue lights on your WRE, but when you try to ping your WRE it gives your RTO. So this indicates that your WRE is not configured Properly...
To Configure your WRE, first you need to be sure then wireless network which you are try to connect is unsecured... AS you are trying to configure your WRE with your Neighbours wireless network, Well in this case you can try to configure your WRE Manually..
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your Expander, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...
    1. Connect your Expander to a computer, click on the Start button >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>> Network Connections - Right click on the icon for Local area connection and go to properties- On the 'General' tab select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties button- Select 'Use the following IP address'- Provide IP Address - 192.168.1.5, Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0...Click on Ok button to Save and Click on "Close" on main Properties window...
    2. Now open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.240. Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...It should open your Expander set-up...
    3. Once you get to the set-up page you can follow this link to change the Expander Settings...
NOTE : The link also explains to check the Wireless Settings on your Router...
    4. While changing the Expander settings you have to make sure that the Wireless Settings(SSID/Network Name and WEP/WPA Key) are identical on both the devices(Router and Expander)...Also make sure to change the Expander's default IP to match your network and Gateway Address should be your Router's address...ex.Expander's IP Address : 192.168.1.240(assuming your router's default IP Address is 192.168.1.1),Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1...
    5. After configuring the Expander you should disconnect it from the Computer and go into Local Area Connection TCP/IP Properties and set it back to Obtain IP Address Automatically...Disconnect the Expander from the computer and power cycle both the devices(Expander and Router) ...Your Expander should be configured...
In case if you don't get the Expander set-up just leave it connected to your computer and reset it for 30 seconds and follow Step 2, Step 3, Step 4 & Step 5...
    Hope this helps.
