Re: Acer Aspire Switch 10 - Proprietary Charging Port to micro-USB adapter

I have a high power power bank capable of charging via both usb and 19v. Included were adapter cables that fit many devices that don't charge via usb. However none fit an acer switch 12.Any ideas?

Radio Shack, if you can still find one, has adapter tips that fit. Make sure your 19V supply is putting out the appropriate wattage, though I expect if it's designed to power a laptop it'll have plenty.

  • Acer Aspire Switch 10E - unable to boot, no keyboard

    Hello everyone,
I have recently bought an Acer Aspire Switch 10E to do my terrain work, and would love to be able to run Linux on it. I'm running into one problem after another though (most likely because some things aren't officially supported yet, but I was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences who might be able to help me out. To cut the long story short, from my own experience, I'm sure Linux can run on this.
In any case, the machine features a quad-core Intel Atom CPU (which should work AFAIK), with Intel HD graphics (which should also work flawlessly AFAIK). It also features a Realtek RTL8273BS WiFi network card (haven't got to trying it out, but my guesstimate is that it requires some proprietary firmware, since it didn't work on Ubuntu live). It has a 1280x800 touchscreen (which worked flawlessly on Ubuntu live), and a dockable keyboard (now that one boggles me). This is just a quick "tldr" version of what the machine is supposed to be. It's basically a 64-bit x86-compatibile tablet PC with a dockable keyboard and which shipped with Windows 8.1.
Okay, so first things first. The Acer Aspire Switch 10E has a 32-bit UEFI, and there is no possible way of booting an OS (live or otherwise, Linux or otherwise) which only has a 64-bit EFI image. There is no legacy BIOS on the motherboard, so (to whom it may concern), don't even bother with online tutorials that tell you to switch to legacy BIOS, as there is no way to enable it. On the other hand, a valid 32-bit EFI image will boot, even in Secure Mode, so don't bother disabling that either. In other words, there is absolutely no need to change anything in the UEFI setup in order to boot Linux, apart from adding your 32-bit EFI image to a trusted list.
Thus, in order to boot any live Linux media, it is (TTBOMK) required to either generate a working 32-bit EFI image, or use an existing one. It took me a while to figure that out, on top of the time to figure out how to generate my own 32-bit EFI image, without breaking something. Bear with me here - this is the first machine I ever owned that features an UEFI, let alone an UEFI without legacy BIOS.
Here is the stuff I found, which I was able to use to get to this point:
UEFI GPT Arch Linux USB (bootx64.efi and bootia32.efi) - Taylorbyte.com
Acer Aspire Switch 10 can't boot 14.04 LTS - Ubuntu Forums
From Ubuntu forums, I learned about this and this, both of which have bootable 32-bit EFI images, which work on Ubuntu live. Those, however, did not work with Arch Linux, for some reason, so I generated my own EFI images from the tutorial found on Taylorbyte.com. Not absolutely sure if I did it right however, since the tutorial seemed a bit dated, but it did get me into the basics I needed.
So, I now have a bootable USB drive with Arch Linux installed on it, with both 32-bit and 64-bit EFI images. My Acer Aspire 10E recognises the 32-bit EFI image and boots into GRUB loader from it, which asks me whether to boot into Arch Linux or Arch Linux Fallback. At this point, my keyboard still works, and I can choose either.
However, as soon as I choose Arch Linux to boot, it complains about being unable to boot from "UUID=<my USB's UUID>", and drops me into a boot console. The cursor blinks, but the keyboard input is not recognised at all.
I have recompiled the kernel for my live Arch USB (via makepkg -o and makepkg -e) as stated on the Ubuntu forums (setting HID_MAX_USAGE = 65536 in a certain header file in the kernel sources), but it didn't do much. The kernel still compiles, so I guess that's a plus.
Without keyboard, I am unable to install Arch on this machine, and I'm currently stuck with this error, which I'm not sure what to make of. I have never stated any UUID's while configuring my Arch live USB, so I suppose something is detecting it automatically, thus preventing Arch from booting (no idea what it could be, though).
So to conclude, I need help with booting Arch live USB on this machine, as well as getting keyboard to work. I have read here and there some people had some success with either Arch, Fedora or Ubuntu, and I've seen (32-bit) Debian 8.1 installer boot normally - without keyboard or wifi, though.
Any help regarding this would be very much appreciated.

Hi Marc, Thanks for the swift response.  I'm not sure if Acer (Philippines) will be able to give the necessary support since they are only selling the Switch 10 (not even Switch 11! So backwards!) . I don't mind reinstalling the file from time to time as long as it will fix the problem asap. Would it be possible to know how often you reinstalled the exe file to fix the problem?  One more thing, the only thing that's hindering on buying the Switch 12 are problems like these (since we don't have the tech support yet). Would it be possible for you to send me the fix for the keyboard problem? Thank you very much! ++ How's the experience when you are using it on your lap, let say when travelling on a plane ? Is the built stable enough that it won't stumble that easily?

  • Somtime my Acer Aspire Switch 11 cant turn on properly

There are times that my Acer Aspire Switch 11 cant turon on properly I tried the following but still it wont turn on: 1. Click the power button2. Click and hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds It only opens when I charge it and hold the button for 10 to 15 seconds. However the Acer is not lowbat (almost 40%) This always happens everyday since I use the laptop everyday Hope any can help with this Thanks!

How did you leave it when last used? Did it go to sleep or did you do a shutdown (or even hibernate)? If we can figure out what triggers the bad behavior then we can perhaps come up with a solution.

  • Acer Aspire Switch 10 not turning on

Hey there, I have an Acer Aspire Switch 10 that will not turn on.  I was using it to browse the web earlier today when I heard a clicking noise and it suddenly shut off.  When plugged in, it recognizes that it is being charged, but it does not turn on when I press the power button.  Please help! Thanks,Ben

In this case, remove the battery from the computer (if feasible) and connect the computer directly to the power adapter. Now, check if it turns on. If it turns on, then there may be some issue with your battery. To confirm this, you can consider using another battery and see if that resolves the issue. If the issue still persists, then there may be some hardware issue with the computer and you need to take it to nearest Acer service center for further assistance. To do this, the following link can be helpful:

  • ACER ASPIRE SWITCH 10 SHUTS DOWN and WONT TURN ON

I got my Acer Aspire Switch 10 just 2weeks ago. Everything seems fine until yesterday.
I was using the unit, charger plugged in (blue indicator light present), then it just shut down. I tried restarting it and it wont open. The monitor was becoming warm.
Now, I plugged it in (orange indicator light present), it is just a blank screen. I tried pressing the power button for about 30 seconds then press the power and volume down button (I read it somewhere), but the monitor just blinked black and gray many time.
Can someone help me with this please. Desperate here. Thank you!!

Sorry to hear that you have issues with new windows tablet,If you are using Aspire SW5-01, you will find a reset pinhole between Microphone and MicroSD card slot.  Insert a paperclip into the hole and press for four seconds to reset the tablet If the power indicator is blue steady then the computer is fully charged and plugged in.Amber Steady, then the computer is charging and plugged in.If Amber Blinking, then the battery is critically low or abnormal batteryIf the indicator is Off, the computer is off.

  • Acer Aspire Switch 10 e keyboard dock problem

Hi. I have this brand new Acer Aspire Switch 10 E which I just bought last month. I'm now having problems with the keyboard and the dock as when I connect the tablet/screen to the dock, the keyboard is not detected. It recognizeswhen I dock the tablet but it doesn't detect te hard drive nor the keyboard. Sometime, after a long while, it detects the keyboard and the hard drive but only for a few seconds then it disappears again. Other times, it just flips continually from working and then not working. The problem is so sudden. I would jokingly note that whenever I search for solutions to the keyboard problem, it very briefly fixes itself. On a serious note however, I do not know what causes this malfunction nor do I know what fixes it. As stated above, the problem is so sudden. I have been very, very careful with the use of my laptop including in the removal and docking of the tablet. I have inspected the docking pins, and physically, they look perfectly fine. The problem occurs even the tablet has been connected and left undisturbed for continuous periods of time. This has led me to believe that the problem could be software based and not hardware. I am also open to the possibility that it could be heat affecting the docking pins (heat can cause connection issues and this isn't the first time I have encountered one, nor the second) but like I said, the docking pins work perfectly and remain constantly in contact witch each other. As I have postulated that the problem is software based, I have gone through the hassles of searching for possibble drivers for the dock/keyboard. Unfortunately, (this might be due to the Aspire Switch 10 E being a fairly new model) there were no keyboard drivers on the Acer support page for the Aspire Switch 10 E. In my search, I encountered a video for the Aspire Switch 10 keyboard to fix the problem, a driver update for the Switch 10, NOT the Switch 10 E. I have tried the solution and it still does not work. I am not a fan of forums and if I am, I am usually just a reader kind of person. But in the light of recent events and the fact that there are virtually NO questions or posts about this brand new model of laptop, specfically the Aspire Switch 10 E, I have taken the responsibility of raising this question in the hopes that a knowledgeable person may provide assistance and that the others of my kind (the Aspire Switch 10 E users) may be enlightened as well. I would sincerely appreciate the assistance. God bless. TL;DR: Aspire Switch 10 E detects docking but keyboard and hard drive are inconsistently not working. Help. Reposted this topic on the laptops forum because I realized I posted the first one in desktops.

Hi, I have a similar problem.  Sometimes after waking or after removing or reataching the keyboard it becomes unresponsive.  But if I then restart the computer it is fine.  I think, in my case at least, it can not be due to just a bad connection, as otherwise restarting it would not change anything.  Also, I don't think it is something that has been fixed as it is quite a recent purchase and I have recently updated windows and drivers.  The whole reason for choosing this pc was the ease with which it converts between tablet and laptop mode so any advice would be very welcome. Thanks,Tom

  • Acer Aspire Switch 12 noisy LCD backlight?

Greetings, Got my brand new Acer Aspire Switch 12 the other day. I'm very satisifed with the form factor and with the device in general. Except for one thing. There is audible amount of noise coming from my unit when the backlight is set between 0% and 100%. The noise seems to emanate just under the "Acer" logo. This noise goes away when i set the backlight to 0% or to 100%. And it seems to be the loudest if i set the backlight to about 50% It is not very obvious but i can definitely hear it in a quiet room. Kind of defeates the whole point of a fanless design if you ask me. I think the noise is coming from the capacitors or coils in the backlight regulator circutry. I would like to know if this is a general problem with this model or is this just a problem with my unit. Fellow Aspire Switch 12 owners, do you have the same issue with your unit? Acer admins, is this a known problem with this model? I have to know, i have to decide whether i'm going to replace the unit, return the unit or just stick with it. I bought it from amazon.es.Part number of my unit: NT.L7FEB.004

    mkatic,
I do not see anything in the documentation that talks about that issue, you can contact Acer technical support in your area to see what your options are, or you can seek them through Amazon; I believe that this might be their return policy if it helps steer you in the right direction.

  • Acer Aspire Switch 10 - USB Boot / Windows 8.1 installation from USB

    Hi
I recently bought Switch 10. As it has only 32GB SSD splited in 24GB of windows partition and 8GB for Recovery I tried to merge those partition to get rid of Recovery and have only one SSD partition. Longbstory short, I failed and got a bluescreen, then a reboot and now I have this:
    http://i.imgur.com/NmAkhgO.jpg
I have Windows 8.1 from official Microsoft website, I have orginal CDkey (not OEM from Acer). The version I downloaded is a 32/64bit installer (I think, but it may be only 32bit)
I was trying to set up BIOS by myself, but it always puts me to blue screen of windows (with error 0000225).
I provide screens of BIOS with default settings: http://imgur.com/a/jtyN2
I prepared pendrive from an .iso image with a program called Rufus, partitioning system GPT.
Then I changed BIOS settings to allow non secure boot and to boot first from USB HDD, and while booting I hit F12. But still I get that: http://imgur.com/yE48diG
    - What I would like to do? Be able to start Windows 8.1 installator, clear all SSD partitions and make only one 32GB with windows.
    - What I need? Help, becouse I cant start boot from USB and run Windows 8.1 installator.

This is NOT correct info. Who in their right minds thinks that Windows' own installation media creator cannot create the proper media to install their own software. That's just idiotic. HERE is the correct info: First, you must be using 32bt installer. Switch 10 does not support 64bit. (At least mine does not) You can check the efi\boot folder for the file. bootx64.efi is incorrect. It should be bootia32.efi GPT or MBR SHOULD NOT MATTER. I personally know MBR works fine. I don't bother with GPT since I am no where near 2TB, nor can it ever be added. Drive must be FAT32 Add supervisor PW to UEFI to enable Secure Boot changes. Disable Secure Boot Change your boot order to reflect USB HDD first. After you hose your system and want to put it back, good luck with that. I can point you a direction on this but I haven't successfully done it yet myself, so I don't even say it is the 'right' direction. I wiped my partitions, and it's a BAD IDEA at this point in Win10 developement IMHO. Anyways, 8.1 with Bing is a different license than 8.1. You cannot DL 8.1 with Bing in any shape or form from MS. And your embedded key will not activate ANYTHING on the list in MS media creator. There is ONE guy who has UL the factory image as a torrent. It's the UK version, but it works and you can change the lanuage pack afterwards (I think. it wasn't annoying enough for me to try it yet) I couldn't seem to get RUFUS to create a UEFI from the guy's image. My solution was to use MS Media Tool to DL and create a 32bit, 8.1 usb drive. Once I verified it would indeed boot the machine, I then deleted all VISIBLE files from it and replaced them with the files from the UK ISO. DO NOT FORMAT. The whole point is to have the hidden system files and MBR intact. Just delete and then copy paste. At this point you should be able to boot and install windows. Then go DL the Master Installer from acer and it'll install MOST of the drivers. I still cannot get my built in sound to work again. Anybody that does, help would be much appreciated.

  • N900 wont switch on, charge or connect by USB

My n900 is 4 months old an I went to use it the other day and it had switched off. I tried to turn it on the nokia logo came on and the flashing dots and then it switches off. I tried plugging the charger in and the nokia logo comes on and then it switches off and it keeps doing this till its unplugged, it does the same thing when connected to the USB cable. Today I've tried to switch it on and there's nothing at all no lights or logo come on. As any one got any ideas? Im not very up on the technical things so I'm a bit lost.

    Hi sammic85
The BL-5J used by N900 is a pretty common Nokia battery, can you find someone to give it a charge for you? Unfortunately if allowed to go completely flat as you have found there is not enough power to recognize the charger.
Happy to have helped forum in a small way with a Support Ratio = 37.0

  • How can I hibernate my Aspire Switch 10E?

Hello, I have a recently purchased Acer Aspire Switch 10 E.  Since I purchased it I have not had the option to hibernate the computer.  I know that the OS, Windows 8.1, by default often does not have the option to hibernate, but even when I go to control panel, power options and change settings that are currently unavailable I do not have the option to hibernate.  I have updated windows and drivers, went to the registry to check it allows for hibernation and used some command line tools but still no option. I was begining to think that perhaps the device is not capable of hibernation as it seems others with this pc have the same issue, but I found that in the advanced power option the default for critcal power action is to hibernate.  As I use several programs on this pc while travelling and meeting clients, it is important that I can retain work in progress over long periods where putting it to sleep will just loose the battery and restarting work after a full shutdown is impractical so any advice would be gratefully recieved. Thanks.Tom

    tomeq,
    Try this:
Open Power Options by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Power options in the search box, and tapping or clicking Power options.
Tap or click Choose what the power button does and under Shutdown settings, select Hibernate (if it's available).

Boy, those are two very different machines! The first one is very handy if you are carrying the laptop with you most of the time, especially if you are switching between carrying it, using it as a laptop and using it as a tablet fairly often. The detriment is that the screen is small, only 10 inch. The second one is a lot more powerful and larger, but it will be more of a hassle to carry (you will want a backpack or briefcase). It's better suited if you are traveling between locations and want to set it up for extended use at each destination. You are going to be less likely to want to pull it out for ten minutes of quick web surfing.

  • Can I use Micro-USB Charger for Nokia C5?

I am planning to buy Nokia C5.
According to http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/accessories/all-accessories/power/chargers/nokia-micro-usb-cha... it says that Nokia Micro-USB Charger AC-6 is compatible for Nokia C5, is that true?
Because I thought Nokia C5 uses the AC-8 charger.

Yes, C5-00 supports charging via its Micro-USB port, this one should work with it.
If a reply has solved your problem click Accept as solution button, doing it will help others know the solution. Thanks.
