Re: BT Privacy at home

I realise this is an old topic, but I too came across it searching das interweb.  I have found the comments interesting and a reflection of all the reasons I mistrust everything BT say, write or do.
Back in the day when there was a simple organisation to call to complain about BT, things could get resolved quite quickly.
I made several complaints to OFCOM (as it was back then) about the misleading wording of BT's adverts.  They still do it, and the intuitive out there pick them up on it, then go elsewhere for their services.  Examples are the misleading titles BT give to almost everything... this first came to my attention when BT advertised a BT router, naming it something completely different.  The advert (back in the day) insinuated that anyone wanting to run a home network would only be able to do so if they had one of BT's special adaptors - known to all and sundry as a router.  To this day their adverts use covert wording that insinuates that BT broadband is faster than anyone else.... not true folks... the top speed is the top speed dictated by a number of factors, all coming down to where you are.  If BT provide the line in, then all ISP's offering broadband over that line will be able to offer the same speed... and the best offer short term contracts of opt out after one month.  No need to sign up for a 12 month contract.
TIP (1)  Whenever BT phone you asking if you want the service you already have, either cheaper or at a fixed lower rate.  Always say NO, as sure as eggs are eggs, there'll be something about to happen that they know is on the cards, and you don't - that can save you even more money.  BT are merely wanting to lock you into a year of paying more than you could - if only you knew what they know is just around that corner.
But moving on from all of this.  I now want to look at various methods of dealing with cold calling and automatic dialling systems which are all but short of attacking us with unwanted calls at almost every time of day.  Have you had a loan, credit card or dardi dari darrr in the past 10 years.... dial five to speak to an advisor, 9 to opt out.  Dialling 9 doesn't work anymore than replaying to spam email, it just lets the call system know its contacting a live person.  You can quickly use the internet to discover that the calls trace back to a couple of residential apartments in Gibraltar  SCAM ALTERT ON!
But having read the comments in this forum, I think I'll avoid BT's "Privacy at Home" service, everything written smacks of everything I know to be true about BT... best avoided unless you have no other option.
TIP (2)  Whenever BT rip you off, make a point of posting about it in every forum you come across, they may control this forum, but thanks to many others out there, they cannot stop the truth from out!
Question, are there any good points about: Privacy it home, or is there hundreds of other options that are much cheaper or better?
Dave

Oh yes the 12 month contract.... BT's big vision, all BT customers are so intrinsically dumb that they will stand being ripped off, tied into a deal they did not understand nor want, then have forgotten how bad it was by the time they can get out of the deal.

Please , please , just because you are does not mean that all BT customers are.
I, like the vast majority of BT customers are happy. I have a deal that I want and at the end of that deal I will ALWAYS check up what is best for me before I sign another.

  • Caller Display - Privacy at Home - unable to order

I would like to order Privacy at Home. I have tried to order online, via my account, but I don’t think this has been accepted. I kept getting error messages at the end of the process.
I have been trying to access my ‘Calling Features’ online for two days. Each time I get the message:
“Sorry, we can't change your Calling Features at the moment.
Sorry, we can't access your account information at the moment. Please try again later.”
    I have tried telephoning the order line - 0800 916 5544 – quoted here:
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8098
and get the message:  “the number you have dialed has not been recognised”.
I have called this number numerous times.
I have sent feedback to this effect twice.
I have completed the pop-up survey on the BT website and repeated the information.
If the online ordering isn’t working, and the ordering phone number isn’t correct, how am I going to order this feature?
I am already registered with TPS and simply want caller display. Perhaps someone here could help me?

  • Multiple Apple ID's needed to maintain privacy on home Mac?

At home I have a family Mac. I have just bought an iPhone. At home we are signed in to iTunes etc using my Apple ID. I was wondering if there is any way to control what is transferred to the Mac via iCloud - I don't necessarily want to share all my work files, docs, photos, email etc with the whole family!? Do we need separate ID's? Would this then work with syncing from my iPhone to the Mac if 'we were different people'?

You can all stiil use the same iTunes Store account and have different accounts for the iCloud syncing service to maintain privacy. Each person would then use their own ID with their iOS device and their particular user account on the mac.

  • Remove calling features - Answer 1571 and Privacy ...

I've just ordered a new connection, and decided to opt into the "free" calling features Answer 1571 and Privacy at Home. After completing the order I was notified by email that these features are only free under certain conditions, otherwise there's an additional monthly charge. This was probably mentioned somewhere while I was ordering it, but I didn't see it so I'm guessing it was buried in small print.
I'd like to opt out of these calling features to avoid having to pay any additional charges, but I can't find any information on how to change which calling features I'm subscribed to. Please can you let me know how to turn off Answer 1571 and Privacy at Home.
I'd also like to make a suggestion: You should make it clear to your customers that there are hidden charges associated with these "free" services before they place their orders.
    -Mike

You may be able to visit www.bt.com/myaccount. there is a link on there to changing your calling features, if not it's a call to 150

  • Caller Display disappeared after I ordered Privacy...

I have always had Caller Display as a call feature. I recently found out that you can have Caller display for free under Privacy at Home, so I cancelled the paid feature and ordered Privacy at Home instead. I have received written confirmation from BT, and Caller Display disappeared, despite having Privacy at Home!! I dialled *#234# and received the message that "the service requested is not available". I want Caller Display even if I have to pay for it, but when I logged onto Change Calling features, I could not find the option "Caller Display". What's happening? Can someone help?

Seems that since you ordered privacy on line they have forgot to add the caller display option.
Give the service dept a call on 0800 800 150, and explain what has happened.

  • App Store and ITunes have been disabled and it won't allow me to enable it again? How can I get it back ?

I've tried resetting privacy settings, home screen, restarting iPad and even went to settings to enable all apps but the iTunes and apps icons are greyed out and cannot be changed! I tried disabling the settings but it still is grayed out and will not switch to on. What can I do? Do I need to complete a factory reset?

    Saw this on another post.
Applecare Senior Advisor Txx Bxxx (I have his contact info in an email he just sent) just confirmed with me that the problem people are having with the App Store not loading is an apple issue with there servers, ITS NOT YOUR IPAD so don't go restoring it!   It's not happening to everyone however but they are looking into it, its really hit or miss.

  • Need to remove the header and footer regions on one page

    Hi,
I have a requirement to remove the header and footer regions on one page only. The regions I'm referring to contain the following:
    Header:
Company logo, Home link, Logout link, Preferences link
    Footer:
Copyright info, Privacy Statement, Home link, Logout link, Preferences link
These are the standard Oracle header and footer regions/page items, so I am not specifying a particular page name, although it would be the create time cards page we want to modify.
Also, we only want to remove these regions/items from ONE page, not an entire responsibility.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Suzanne

    Hi,
    In order to hide,

    OAPageLayoutBean page = pageContext.getPageLayoutBean();
    page.prepareForRendering(pageContext);
    page.setGlobalButtons((oracle.cabo.ui.UINode)null);
And for hiding the Copyright info, Privacy Statement:

  • Caller Dispaly not activated??

Hi, caller display worked fine until we moved to BT Broardband and Phone package. I did request "Privacy at Home" when we switched back to BT.
Looking through the forums i found out about dialing *#234# and got a message saying the "service requested was not available. So it seems to not have been activated?
I've tried to set it up again through in my account - but half of myBT seems not to work. After going through the options to add calling features to my line in the end I always just get a message saying I can't change my calling features at the moment.
I would phone 150 (as some other threads have suggested), but I don't want to spend hours on the phone to some foreign call centre who from previous really bad experience give you the run around so i would rather it could be fixed on here and really the options to do it in myBT should work!
    Any help would be appreciated!

hi, if you ring at around 9 o clock today (in the morning) i would go through to sales (answer quickly and its an English call centre who are not to mad about script reading) explain to them you would like it activated and im sure they can do it or put you through quickly to a department that can it should be to long on the phone especially if you ring early when the English call centres first open. feel free to post back if you still have problems getting it activated.

  • Caller Display Charge from Jan 2014

With regard to the soon to be chargeable options 1571 and Caller Display I am confused as to whether I would be charged or not.
For 1571 I cancelled this a few years ago as it interferred with my Answerphone, so hopefully there will be no automatic 'opt-in' for this for me, but Caller Display ?.
I currently have a phone (BT Graphite) that displays the number calling me. However all talk seems to be of 'BT Privacy at Home with Caller display' being the chargable option. I am not sure if this is what I have. Reading BT website for this addon simply means the User would also be signed up with TPS, but I did this myself, again many years ago, so is what I use simply to get a number displayed on the Phone, so is this 'BT Privacy at home with Caller Display' or not. There is no identification of this on 'My BT' Account Page. I have also read that Inclusive call packages could include Caller Display, my package is Unlimited Evening & Weekend calls

    Thanks for the clarification.
So, my understanding is as follows:-
I am currently on 'Broadband Option 1' with 'Unlimited Anytime Plan' at a cost of £16.90 per month + Line Rental
I believe the cost for 'Unlimited Anytime Plan' is £5.15 at present (included in the £16.90).
NB: I am not currently in a contract.  It finished in May this year
Having entered my account no. and telephone number in the Broadband Price Checker for the price after 4/1/2014, it shows the cost rising to £17.98.
However, if I want to continue 'Caller Display' as a free service, then I will need to agree to a NEW 12 month contract with BT.  On taking out a NEW contract, I believe that I will then be subject to the £7.00 monthly charge for 'Unlimited Anytime Plan' as opposed to £5.48.  Is my understanding correct on this point?
If so, will my NEW monthly payment rise to £19.50 (difference between £5.48 and £7.00) + Line Rental?
It really is important that I determine what the actual cost will be.

  • Anytime Call Plan

I recently signed up to The Unlimited Anytime Plan........and was under the impression that Caller Display was Free......however the caller display has never worked, so I called BT and was informed that it should have been activated and apologised but it would be activated within 24 hours.
Later that day I was browsing BT's home page and checked the Anytime Plan and it was as set out below :
    The Unlimited Anytime Plan includes:
Phone security and privacy See who's calling before you answer, keep your number private and stop unwanted sales calls – all for no extra cost when you sign up.
But Under The legal stuff at bottom of page -
    Calling Plans and line rental:
Unlimited Anytime Plan – 3 months free. Offer extended to 30th June for orders placed via BT.com or by special invitation. Available to new Unlimited Anytime Plan residential customers signing up for 12 months. Usual cost of Plan (£4.99 a month) payable from month 4. Discount via bill credit. Line rental payable at £11.54 a month with Direct Debit and paper free billing. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer and may be withdrawn at any time. Exclusions and conditions apply.
Call Features at no extra cost. Customers must make at least two chargeable calls with BT per month, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £2.59 a month for BT Caller Display or £1 per a month for the standard BT Answer 1571 service.
So I rang BT again and the operator confirmed that I would have to make two chargeable calls per month...I asked for it to be deactivated which was confirmed.
The following day lo and behold the Caller Display started working on my phone. I again phoned BT and was told that NO the charges did not apply as set out above but I asked for it to be deactivated, which was confirmed.
Lesson learned - All that glitters is not gold.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That's not what it says in BT's official price guide. For Privacy at Home, the eligibility criteria are:
"In order to be eligible, Consumer customers must make at least 6 chargeable or inclusive calls per quarter with BT, (excludes calls made with BT Broadband Talk or Chargecard). Should these calls not be made, a charge of £7.77(Inc VAT) per quarter will be applied for the Caller Display service. Business customers are excluded from the BT Privacy At Home package.
Consumer customers who are billed monthly must make at least 2 chargeable or inclusive calls per month with BT otherwise a charge of £2.59(Inc VAT) per month will be applied for the Caller Display service.
The Caller Display element of Privacy At Home is subject to availability."
    http://www.bt.com/pricing/current/Exch_Lines_boo/2-3410_d0e53.htm
In other words you only have to make 2 calls a month, NOT 2 paid calls a month.

  • Is Caller Display free or not free for 12 months?

When BT announced there would be a charge of £1.75 pm for Caller Display, they also stated this service would be free for 12 months if the subscriber renewed their contract for one year. i rang BT and agreed to take up the offer.
I have looked at the past 2 bills and they have the following line entries. Here's the latest bill, word for word:
    1. BT Privacy at Home - Caller Display   28 Apr - 27 May 14
This is the cost of your BT Privacy at Home - Caller Display up to 27 May 2014 at £1.75 a month    £1.75
    2. BT Privacy with Caller Display free for 12 months 28 Apr - 27 May 14   £0.00
I queried the £1.75 charge shown on line 1. via BT online webchat and here's BT's response, again word for word:
"BT Privacy With Caller Display is free but for BT Privacy at Home you will be charged £1.75"
You will notice that in their reply they have omitted 'Caller Display' after 'at Home' although the bill clearly shows this at line 1. above.
Can somebody please tell me should I be paying £1.75 a month? If this is so then will line 2. revert to a further £1.75 after the 12 month's expiry which will mean £3.50 a month in total'.
I just thought as a simpleton that I was getting Caller Display entirely free for 12 months by signing a new contract. Maybe life is not that simple?

john46: You state "to put it very simply the 1.75 is charged on one line and credited back on the next line".
Well it isn't. Had there had been such a credit on the bill I would not have raised a bill query with BT or this forum.
Below is my total bill where you can see I have no credit shown. It all adds up to £34.50 including the £1.75 Caller Display fee.
I cannot get a reply out of BT or even an acknowledgement to my email querying the charge. What do you suggest I do? Send a specific mail giving them 7 days' notice that I will cancel the Direct Debit and send a cheque less the missing credits, if I don't receive a satisfactory answer?
Your reply and those of the 2 other respondents now confirm that there should be a credit line of £1.75.
Whatever happens you have proven BT owes me £1.75 for each month this has occurred. May I therefore use your name and your answer in a further email to BT? It will be interesting to see if that prompts a response.

My elderly Mum has bought herself a new phone with caller display so she knows who's ringing her but it doesn't seem to be working, we registered for Privacy at Home early on Thursday morning and it should have been active within 24 hours, I've checked she's got the full numbers entered (incl STD) and she has and I've looked in the manual to see if we've have to switch caller display on but can't find anything. Also I did not ask ior or agree to a new 12 months line rental contract because the only way to get caller display back could well be to change suppliers which I had to do to get reliable broadband - I migrated to PlusNet 3 years ago from BT.
