Re-connect to SAN filesystem

So my OV 3.1 environment had some serious issues. The two VM servers kept rebooting repeatedly - I tried booting into rescue mode but I couldn't find any issues with any config files. It just looked like the OVS agent on each server was losing the heartbeat. If I took the agent down (quickly) the server would stay up, but I couldn't correct the problem.
At the same time, the VM Manager server was pegged and I wasn't able to acknowledge any events in the GUI. I also couldn't remove the rebooting servers from the server pool.
So I first decided to rebuild the servers. That was pretty straight-forward. But the screwed up VM manager wouldn't let me do anything with those servers. Rebooting the VM manager server again didn't help. So then I decided to remove and reinstall VM manager. Again, that was pretty straight forward and I used the uuid when reinstalling.
So I was able to recreate the Network and Storage settings in VM manager and it found the server pool filesystem LUN and the storage LUN that has the VMs on it. I created the Server Pool and it used the server pool filesystem LUN OK. But now I can't access the storage LUN. I don't know how to reconnect it to the VM manager. I tried mounting it manually on a VM server just to see if there was something like a config file with a uuid that I could modify, but when I tried that I got the message "*mount.ocfs2: Cluster name is invalid while trying to join the group*". If I try to create a new repository, the LUN doesn't appear in the list of physical disks. I've tried refreshing and rebooting but that doesn't work. So I'm not sure what to do next.

OK, so Oracle Support helped me solve this one. I sent them vmpinfo output and this is what they had me do:
1. On the master server, find the device for the LUN in question (you can use 'multipath -ll') and run:
fsck.ocfs2 /dev/mapper/36090a098805639d7c5fef443bc01f049 <----That's the device on my system, yours will be different
2. Update the cluster id:
tunefs.ocfs2 --update-cluster-stack /dev/mapper/36090a098805639d7c5fef443bc01f049
3. Check that the cluster id has been modified:
mounted.ocfs2 -d
5. In VM Manager, refresh storage. This didn't solve the problem, so I rebooted my VM Servers and the VM Manager at this point but they didn't say I had to. The OV servers were logged out of the iSCSI LUNs at this point, so I ran 'iscsiadm -m node -l' on the OV servers.
6. After I gave Oracle Support a new vmpinfo output, they had me back up my VM Manager database before proceeding further.
7. Support then provided me with a file, setcluster.zip, that I had to unzip under $ORACLE_BASE/ovm-manager-3 (on the OVM server). It created the 'runner' subdirectory and I cd'd to that directory.
8. I ran './setcluster -u admin -p <password>'. I had to choose the LUN in question, then the Server Pool it should belong to, and then confirm that I wanted to attach the repository to the server pool. This made the Repository show up in VM Manager, but it was empty and the LUN wasn't mounted on the OV Servers.
9. Finally, I had to Present the OV servers to the Repository and then Refresh the Repository. Everything showed up in the repository after that - all my VMs, Templates, etc.
10. Oh, one more thing. The Virtual Machine network showed up with a hexadecimal name so I just renamed it and added the VM Servers to it. This allowed my VMs to successfully boot.
I hope this info helps someone if they find themselves in the same situation.

  • Do we need to create two zones for Two HBA for a host connected with SAN ?

Hi,While creating Zone , Do we need to create two zones for Two HBA for a host connected with SAN ? Or a zone is enough for
a host which having Two HBAs...We have two 9124s for our SAN fabric...
As I found like one zone  below, I little bit confused that , if a host having two HBA connected with SAN, should I expect two zones for every Host?
from the zone set, I gave the command show zoneset
    zone name SQLSVR-X-NNN_CX4 vsan 1
        pwwn 50:06:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN
        pwwn 50:06:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN
              pwwn 10:00:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN
But I found only one zone for the server's HBA2:by the same time in the fabric I found switches A & B showing the WWNs of those HBAs on its
connected N port...Its not only for this server alone, but for all hosts..Can you help me to clarify on this please..that should we need to create one zone for
    one HBA?

if u have two independent fabrics between hosts and storage, i think the below confs are recommended.
Scenario 1:  2 HBAs single port each ( redundancy across HBA / Storage port )
    HBA1 - port 0 ---------> Fabric A ----------> Storage port ( FAx/CLx )
    HBA2 - port 0 ---------> Fabirc B ----------> Storage port ( FAy/CLy )
Scenario 2: 2 HBAs of dual port each
    HBA1 - port 0 -------> Fabric A ---------> Storage port ( FAx/CLx )
    HBA2 - port0 ---------> Fabric A ---------> Storage port ( FAs/CLs )
    HBA1 - port 1 --------> Fabric A --------> Storage port ( FAy/CLy )
    HBA2 - port 1 ---------> Fabric B --------> Storage port ( FAt/CLt )
the zone which is in your output is VSAN 1. if its a production VSAN, Cisco doesn't recomends to use VSAN 1 ( default vsan ) for production.

  • Connecting two san switch in cascade

I am planning to connect two San switch in cascade because the 2/16 san switch that I am using now only have one unused port and I am planning add four server more. So my less expensive solution is using a second 4/16 switch that I have.
    - My questions
    How I do that ?
Do I need a special license?
Do I need some other change in the ports configuration for this purpose?
    Some care I must take?
    Thank you
    Ehab

The answers to your questions are really going to depend on the make and model of your switches.
Some switch types require a license to configure E_Port (switch-to-switch) functionality, but most do not. Whichever port(s) you use to make the connection will need to either be configured as an E_Port or configured in a mode that will allow it to auto-negotiate itself to E (this could be a GL_Port, Gx_Port, or U_Port depending on switch vendor) after the switches establish communication.
If the switch that you are adding has some zoning defined on it that is different than the existing switch then you may run into some conflicts so it is often best to just clear the zoning config on the switch that is being added. Finally, you would want to make sure that each switch has a unique Domain ID otherwise the two switches will segment and not merge. By default, most switches are set to Domain ID 1 so just make sure they are both not set to 1.

  • Connectivity for SAN replication

I am a newbie in the SAN world so hope am asking the right questions.
We are looking into replacing our aging SAN. As part of the replacement, managemnt is thinking of placing a secondary SAN at one of our remote locations for backup & DR purposes.
My question revolves around providing connectivity between the two SANS. I have been asked to look into a dedicated point-to-point connection for the SAN replication. Not counting the actual SAN hardware, what other hardware would I need? Am I bacically building an independent network for this? Why this route instead of over our corporate WAN? Any good recommended reading for learning about the SAN world?
    Brent

    Hi, Brent,
I agree with Mike. I originally posted this before I saw his reply.
Here are a couple of good Cisco-specific document to start with:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/ns340/ns517/ns224/ns378/net_design_guidance0900aecd800ed146.pdf
    http://www.cisco.com/go/storage
Your options are either native FC over some sort of fiber transport (dark fiber, CWDM, DWDM, SONET) or FCIP over a WAN link. Native FC is usually for synchronous replication for distances up to 200 km for large bandwidth requirements. FCIP is usually for asynchronous replication at longer distances with less bandwidth. The transport largely dictates the hardware. FCIP is generally cheaper.
If you go the FCIP route, a dedicated link is preferable to make sure replication traffic has predictable latency and bandwidth, but you can share an existing link if you have to. Basic QOS is available in this case. Also, FCIP on Cisco devices has special capabilities to help you get the most out of your bandwidth (TCP optimizations, compression, write acceleration, etc.).

  • SAN filesystems won't mount at reboot

We are seeing a problem with Redhat Linux AS 3 (update 4). We have some filesystems on SAN and they won't mount at reboot. We have to exclusively probe the module interface for SAN and then mount the filesystems. In one situation, we have Q-Logic interface for the SAN, and we do “modprobe qla2300” before we attempt to mount. There are other situations now where we have Hitachi SAN. The sequence is, do a mod probe for SAN, mount the SAN file systems, and then start all apps needed on those filesystems.
The problem is where to insert such commands in the boot sequence. The rc scripts won’t help as they get kicked off after filesystems mount. Because the filesystems don’t mount, all actions we want from boot on startup would fail.
Anyone faced this kind of problem? Appreciate your feedback and any work-around you used.

... and we do “modprobe qla2300” before we attempt to mount.Question is why don't you using /etc/modprobe.conf (modules.conf in earlier linux versions)? Simply you configure modules.conf and Qlogic module will be loaded up automaticaly.
    Example of modprobe.conf for qla2300:
    alias scsi_hostadapter0 qla2300_conf
    alias scsi_hostadapter1 qla2300
    alias scsi_hostadapter2 qla2300_conf
    alias scsi_hostadapter3 qla2300
    post-remove qla2300 rmmod qla2300_conf
    options qla2300 ql2xuseextopts=1
    post-remove qla2200 rmmod qla2200_conf
The sequence is, do a mod probe for SAN, mount the SAN file systems, and then start all apps needed on those filesystems.Again, load modules automaticaly via modprobe.conf.
The problem is where to insert such commands in the boot sequence. For automatic mounting you could use automount for example. Of course you must have all relevant modules loaded (see modprobe.conf).
Other scripts belongs to rc definitely.
The rc scripts won’t help as they get kicked off after filesystems mount. Because the filesystems don’t mount. Why FS don't mount? Some error message?

  • UCS connecting to SAN switches

I've configued UCS direct connecting into the SAN before, but not SAN switches.  My understanding of the main differences between the two is this:
    1) With SAN switches, you configure vSANs.  To do this go to SAN tab -> SAN Cloud and configure your vSAN ID's here.  Then in your vHBA template, configure it to use the appropriate vSAN ID you configured under SAN cloud.  Anything else to do here?
    2) Whereas with direct attached storage you connect FI-A to SPA and SPB and FI-B to SPA and SPB, with san switches FI-A goes to 'switch-1' and FI-B goes to 'switch-2'.  Is this correct?  If so, anyone know why it has to be this way?

    No problem, tbone-111
As far as I know, only two vHBAs are supported at this time.  It's best to use 1 from the A-side and 1 from the B-side.
The vHBAs that are used depend on which wwpns you zoned to your boot luns.
For the example below, assume the following convetions:
    1.) my vHBAs are named, vHBA_A1, vHBA_B1, vHBA_A2, vHBA_B2 (A for A-side fabric, and B for B-side)
2.) vHBA_A1 is the first HBA on my A side, and vHBA_B1 is the first HBA on B side
    AND
3.) These HBAs' wwpns are zoned properly to my boot LUNs' Storage Processor (SP) ports on the FC Switch
    AND
4.) These HBAs' wwpns are LUN masked properly on my array
Those are logical ANDs, by the way, they must ALL be true to prevent headaches later on.
5.) Disk Array SP ports A0 and B1 are connected to my A Fabric FC switch.  B0 and A1 are connected to my B Fabric.
6.) This example boot policy will have the A Fabric be the primary boot path
-FYI, best practice to have at least 2 SAN Boot policies (1 for A-side and 1 for B-side, and evenly distribute among your Service Profiles).
In my boot policy, I check the enforce vHBA naming option and specify my vHBAs names (sorry I don't have screenshots available.  just started with a new company and don't have lab access yet).
My SAN Primary setting might be: Primary Target: A0's wwpn and Secondary Target: B1's wwpn
My SAN Secondary setting might be: Primary Target: B0's wwpn and Secondary Target: A1's wwpn
It would be a good idea to confer with your Storage Admins while you are setting up the first couple of servers to boot on each Fabric to help with any troubleshooting.
If zoning and LUN masking are configured correctly, you should see WWPNs listed during the UCS Server Boot sequence at the point where the FC Boot driver is being loaded.
Of course, get Cisco TAC on the line if you run into any obstacles that you cannot get past.
    I hope that helps,
    Trevor

  • SAN connection to global zone

    All,
I currently have the setup below to my solaris 10 zone:
SAN connect to global zone where the mount point locate within non-global zone. SAN connection is place within global zone vfstab file. I run into this problem, the non-global zone will not automatically start when the SAN is connected to global zone at boot.
Please let me know where should I start looking for the cause of this problem.
    Thanks for your time.
    pnt

    Hi MT,
Currently the SAN is connected into the Non-Global zone and they're not automatically mounted when the server is start, otherwise we won't able to connect to our server via ssh. I have it set up as following:
    var/zone/non-globalzone/SAN
I tried to connect the SAN into the Global zone alone and let it automount when the global zone is started and still have problem with ssh connection. The ssh connect is turned in maintenance mode if I let the SAN automount from the vfstab. I don't know where to start looking for the problem.
    Thanks for your time.

  • SANs and inventory collection - ZAM 7.5

Has anyone performed an inventory on a server that is SAN attached ?
Do the drives report as local drives or network drives ?
Do those drives get inventoried ?
What is the impact on the SAN if multiple clustered servers are connected to the same SAN filesystem and attempt to perform their inventories at the same time ?
    My concerns are that :
Software inventory might report as multiple installations in the reports where the actual number might only be a single instance.
Disk I/O on the SAN will increase proportionally by the number of servers attempting to perform inventory on this filesystem at the same time.
Any feedback from the user community and/or Novell would be appreciated.

  • Physical Connectivity from Fabric Interconnect to MDS and Failover please suggest

    Dear Team
We have 2 FI and 2 MDS 1 SAN
    Currenlty the connectivity is
2 direct physical connections from FI-A to MDS1
2 direct physical Connections from FI-B to MDS2
From MDS 1 connection to SAN Primary controller
From MDS 1 connection to SAN Secondary controller
From MDS 2 connection to SAN primary controller
From MDS 2 connection to SAN Secondary controller
Hope the above connectivty is fine?
    we had looked at
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/ps4159/ps6409/ps5990/white_paper_c11_586100.html (as team always preferred to go via cisco standards)
In FI we have to cluster the FI and Primary and Subordinate, likewise here for MDS to we need to? or will it be done via FIs ?
If not these 2 MDs they work independent but sharing the configs that happens among them?
Now what ever changes (Zone Creation)we make on MDS1 hope that will get relpicated to MDS2 via FIs?
If MDS1 Fails will all the configuration be available on MDS2 and still the infra will be smooth running ? and vice versa?
Any additional steps to be done to achieve it?
Which is the best way to achieve it please suggest
    Thanks and Regards
    Jose

    Hi Jose.
    Physically your connectivity is good.
On the UCS side, the 'Primary' and 'Subordinate' role refer only to the Management of the system and which device is actually running UCS Manager.
Each MDS device will have separate configuration (zoning).  It's different between the 2 devices.
The blade itself will have a connection out each side, or 'SAN Fabric'.
    e.g.
               +----+
           +---+    +-----+
           |   |    |     |
           |   |    |     |
           |   |SAN |     |
           | +->----<--+  |
           | |         |  |
           | |         |  |
       +---+-+-+    +--+--+--+
       |       |    |        |
       |MDS-A  |    |MDS-B   |
       +--^-^--+    +---^-^--+
          | |           | |
       +--+-+--+    +---+-+--+
       |       |    |        |
       |UCS-A  |    | UCS-B  |
       +--+----+    +-----+--+
          |               |
          |               |
    VSAN100    +-----+    | VSAN200
          |    |     |    |
          +---->     <----+
               |Blade|
               +-----+
The blade will have a HBA on FabricA (VSAN100) and FabricB (VSAN200)
Each HBA will have a different WWPN, and on the SAN array, each controller will have a WWPN
So on MDS-A, the zoning will be:
    Blade WWPN A
    Storage WWPN Primary A
    Storage WWPN Secondary A
    MDS-B, the zoning will be:
    Blade WWPN B
    Storage WWPN Primary B
    Storage WWPN Secondary B
So the configuration is *not* synced between the two MDS devices, but they each have visibility to the blades vHBA device.  At the blade level, the Multipathing software on the Operating System will handle any failover.
On the UCS, we would generally use a Port Channel up to the MDS.

    Part Description                                                                                Part QTY
    HS22, Xeon 4C X5570 95W 2.93GHz/1333MHz/8MB L2, 2x2GB, O/Bay 2.5in SAS                 2
    IBM 146 GB 2.5in SFF Slim-HS 15K 6Gbps SAS HDD                                                         2
we have allocated 1.6 TB from the SAN storage to these servers.
before that installed sap on stand alone servers successfully, first time iam working on SAN scnerio, here how it will connect with SAN to above hardware iam in confusion, please guid me how i have to proceed.
    Thanku

    Hello Harshit,
When you attach SAN to server host they are shown as disk volumes.
Then its shown more like standard server having disk attached to it. SAN gives flexibility of allocating disk volume dynamically.

  • Server connectivity options for Storage

    Dear Gurus,
We have existing servers in our environment with HBAs and NICs. We are not planning to use Unified fabric (CNA etc) based architecture. We want our storage network to be separated from IP network.
However, can I connect HBA of my servers to FC SFP in FEX or Nexus 5Ks. If yes, how would be the subsequent connectivity towards SAN switch.
Any pointer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

N5K can be configured to work as a pure Ethernet, pure FC, or hybrid FC/Ethernet switch support native FC.
    see eg. https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2236539
FEX doesn't support native FC !
From N5k, you can create ISL links to a FC fabric, be it MDS,.....
Here a list of N5k FC features; what is not supported is IVR ! BB credits are 240 !

  • 2 SAN FABRIC 20Km

    Hi Experts
I  want to connect two san fabric switch away from each other 20KM using a  dedicated fiber in order to replicate san traffic , question is what  transceiver on san fabric should i use to terminate the fiber cable  coming from the MUX ,is SM or MM or must be an FC Transceiver?
    thanks
    Ibrahim

If you are being provided the fiber channel link via a MUX owned by a third-party service provider, then you need to ask them what transceiver type (short reach or long reach) and the fiber type necessary to connect to their equipment.  I would hope it would be a short reach, multimode transceiver for low cost.  But, it will depend upon the MUX.
The following Cisco document outlines the available optical transceivers and the MDS equipment it is compatible with.
