Re-install iphoto on new MBP

I recently bought a 15" MBP, OS X 10.9.1. I installed everything from my old computer(17") from a time machine back-up on to the new one. It turns out that my iphoto library from the old computer is corrupted. Now I can't open iphoto on the 15" or upgrade it. I would like to just reintall a clean version of iPhoto. How do I do that? I don't think a DVD came with the computer. How can I do the re-install?

What version of iPhoto do you have on the new MBP?  What version did you have on the old Mac?
Do you have iDVD on the old Mac?  If so you can transfer it to the new Mac as follows:
1 - connect the two computers to gether so you can access the old Mac with the new one, i.e. a LAN or Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
2 - copy the iDVD application from the Applications folder of the old Mac to the Applications folder on the new Mac.
3 - locate and copy the iDVD folder from the Home/Library/Application Support folder on the old Mac to the same folder on the new Mac.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For  Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
NOTE:  the iDVD folder may be in the HD/Library/Applications Support folder instead of the one mentioned previously.  If that's the case move it to the same location on the new Mac.
3 - launch iDVD, go to iDVD's Advnaced preference pane and point iDVD to the Themes folder that is inside the iDVD folder.
The following is a note on good practice with iDVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Problem Installing SSD in new MBP

Hi, I thought this was gonna be easy: installing a new Samsung 128GB SSD in the optical CD/DVD drive of my new 13" MBP. How wrong I was. I thought the H/W bit would be tough, but the S/W got me instead. What I did:
I left the original HDD (500GB) in the bay & put the Hardwrk's Adapter (& SSD) in the CD/DVD slot - tricky but no real problem.
Rebooted & installed CCC, used DU to format the SSD as a Single GUID partition with MAC OS (Journaled) format - seemed OK.
Used CCC to clone Everything on the old drive to the new one, again said OK. Checked the SSD in DU, repaired permissions, etc.
Reboot, Option key, boot from SSD - here's where things start going wrong. Takes 30s to boot, so cannot be an SSD :-(
In DU the original HDD is still root "/" mount point, so the reboot failed and it reverted back to the SSD.
Tried taking out the HDD & boot only from SSD - Mac fails to properly boot. Reset.
Considered that it might be a CCC problem, or maybe a DU error in formatting, so today:
Booted from MAC OS X ML Recovery USB stick, redid the partition step, but did not reformat the drive.
Reinstall ML fresh, was taking too long (c.90m) so I left it running, will check at lunch time...
Have checked here & on the net, and I do not seem to be doing anything wrong, this usually works for most people - any ideas?
I could try putting the SSD in the HDD bay, but it should work from the 6MB optical bay in a new MBP?
Any thoughts on what went wrong or what I could do to fix this would be most appreciated...

Yes, I thought of that (I was prepared). :-) So I put the new Samsung SSD in my PC to check the firmware version first (as you can't do this on a Mac), which was up-to-date, so nothing to do there. I hope this did not cause a problem with the disc (which I am beginning to suspect - ironic because I chose this disc for Mac compatability), as I set it to GUID partition on the PC ready for speed testing (which I then could not do).
Update: the OS re-install from the USB key failed, did not even look like a working drive this time (single folder red warning icon on it), and didn't come up properly on the Option Reboot list. Based on the above I went into the Recovery Partition from the HDD & did another reinstall from there. This time I changed the partition type to something else (Mac), then back to GUID single & reformatted it, Mac OS (J). It is busy doing the OS install, c.90m again, so will check tonight, but do not hold out much hope...
Only option I can see now is a H/W problem with the CD/DVD drive adapter, so will try one last time by removing this & swapping the SSD for the HDD then reinstall OS direct from USB key.
Should this fail I am all out of options, as the SSD is useless as a 2nd disk or external from the MBP. Only option would be to try to clone the OCZ Vertex III 120GB SSD in the PC onto the Samsung, use this in W7, and swap the OCZ into the Mac? Or just give up & sell it on ebay. :-(
PS: On reading other posts on (Smasung) SSD replacement for MBP HDD, I should note that I did NOT copy the Recovery partiton from the old HDD to the new drive, figuring the old disc would still be in the machine (as a data volume), so I could save a little space on the SSD itself, I was told this would not be a problem, any thoughts?

  • Installing FCP6 on new MBP

I have just purchased a new MBP duo 2008 and want to install my copy of FCP Studio 2 on it. My previous laptop was a PowerBook G4. I upgraded from FCP5 about a year ago and removed the sticker with the FCP 5 serial #. Now, when I try to install FCP Studio 2 on the new MBP, it is telling me the serial # I am giving is an upgrade # and asking for the original #. Which I cannot find! Please will someone tell me who at Apple I need to contact or what steps I can take to resolve this problem. I only bought the new MBP for editing HD on FCP6. All help much appreciated!

If you registered your copy of FCP 5 you may be in luck. If you phone 1-800-MYAPPLE they will help you with installation issues for free. I think in this case, your success may depend on how nice the person on the other end of the phone is... Good luck!

  • Installing PShop on New MBP

Just received my new MacBook Pro yesterday. I need to install PhotoShop, etc. Here's the problem: My initial purchase of P-Shop is 5.5 (OS 9). Since then I have continually upgraded thru CS2. I cannot install from the upgrades and the MBP will not accept older OS 9 versions of the software for original registration. Same situation with MS Office.
Now what do I do? Is there a simple solution? Do I need to purchase a full working version of all the latest upgrades? (Yikes, what a waste of $$$)
    Any help is appreciated.
Macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Adobe has become a pain in the ***, in the latest years.
I bought a OEM photoshop, and after many difficulties to get it running through internet, the vendor gave up and gave me a cracked version of it.
This one is working, at last.
the same happened with premiere, after buying a full version, and using it for some time, I had to reinstall it and then refused to accept the SN. I had to use a cracked SN in ordrer to make a licensed copy work ( since adobe didn't help a bit).
It seems unbelievable but I buy the licenses but use cracked copies of adobe software.

  • XP Pro install fails on new MBP  - Disk Error every time

I have a new 13" MBP. I set up a 50GB partition with Bootcamp but I get a 'Disk Error. Press any key to restart' message after I try to install XP.
I've just tried a second XP Pro install disk, both are legit and brand new. I wiped the partition with Disk Utility after the first failed install. Same error occurs.
    Any ideas ?

Finally got mine going. Look at this post from Robert Loney on 6/26/09 at 7:49am.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1981467&tstart=75
I discovered it was slightly incorrect, but easy to overcome. Where he said that the prompt that comes up is C:\WINDOWS\, mine came up as C:\>, which is what it is supposed to be.
I was able to reformat my partition to NTFS and then do the full install.
    Hope this helps.

  • Does Snow Leopard Come Installed on the new MBP's?

I read on here that Leopard and Snow Leopard need to be installed once the computer arrives. Is this true? Meaning that the OS X Snow Leopard is not already installed on the notebook when it arrives! That can't be.
Also, if I purchase One-on-One at thid Apple Store, it mentions (or I heard fro someone that I can use the 1st class or whatever it is called to get help with installing programs, migrating from the old to the new, learning a little about the SL OS, etc.? I hope this is good for people who purchase the notebook from the online Apple Store too. It has to be, right? Yeah!
Finally, any recommendations on heavy-duty external 500 GB max most likely with the option of USB 2.0 or FW 400 or 800. I would rarely be using the FW 800 until after I graduate.
    Thanks!

It can be but may not be true. Apple frequently ships existing inventory made before the latest OS is released (& thus does not have it installed or on the system discs) with what is known as a "drop in" disc, so named because it is dropped in the product box & the box resealed before being sent to retail outlets or to customers for direct sales. Once this inventory is gone, all new units will be shipped with the new OS installed (& on the system discs), until then you may get the new OS in one or the other form.

*One to One* is a separate purchase & includes personalized help for everything you mentioned. Read about it at http://www.apple.com/retail/onetoone/.

What is best for you depends on what you mean by "heavy-duty" & how long it will be before you graduate. Do not expect current hard drives to last more than five years (although many will), so figure this into how long you would be using it after purchase. With the current trends in capacity vs. cost, you will probably be able to buy in two years a drive several times as large as a 500 GB one for cheaper than whatever you pay now, so figure that in as well.
In general, Seagate has a good reputation for longevity (mostly perhaps because of its 5 year warranty on some models). The drive products from Other World Computing are also highly regarded. Personally, I like Buffalo drives, mostly for their low cost, & because I plan on replacing/adding new external drives every 1 ½ to 2 years.
If by heavy-duty you mean mechanically rugged, check out the portable drives marketed for portable use & that characteristic -- some have shock resistant cases & contain hard drives with higher g-force shock ratings than is usual.

  • New MBP: Vista crashes during install w/Boot Camp-any suggestions?

Trying to install vista on new MBP. Using Boot Camp, everything seems to work until the very end, and Then Vista says it couldn't finish due to a problem with a device(I'll have to check the exact error at home tonight....)and that I will need to restart and re-install. Then it gets stuck restarting and going to the same message over and over. so frustrating....
This is with a fresh copy of OSX 10.5.5 on a new MBP 2.4 with 4G of ram, right out of the box. New copy of Vista SP1, and following the bootcamp instructions to the letter. I installed all Apple software updates before launching bootcamp. Other than the Apple updates, am I missing something?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

Just a guess, but since everything is new, perhaps you have some sort of permissions problem.

  • Swapping HDs with new MBP: What to do with OS X?

I purchased a new MacBook Pro 2.3GHz i7 quad-core from the Apple Store Thursday morning with the 750GB 5400RPM hard drive. I now have time to set up the new machine but I am hung up on how best to deal with swapping hard drives. My current MBP has a 640GB 7200RPM hard drive with OS X 10.6.6 installed. I am a photographer so the faster drive makes a big difference with large photo catalogs. I had planned on swapping out the new 750GB 5400RPM drive for my current 640GB 7200RPM hard drive and then get back to work, however, I am concerned that the OS X installed on the 640GB 7200RPM hard drive will not be compatible with the new machine's processor. Should I do the swap and then boot up from the new laptop's OS X install disks and do a OS X only install? I have never done a OS X only install/update, will any other data be altered, any suggestions on how to proceed? Should I just swap, start up and then run Apple Software Update?
I would prefer avoiding an erase and install, cloning, migration, Adobe registration issues, etc and going the HD swap and OS X disk update route if it can work.
    Thanks for your input,
    Chad

I found this discussing looking to do the same thing-ish.
I just bought a new i7 quad MacBook Pro (delivered today). Less than 4 weeks ago, I had picked up an i5 MacBook Pro. Since I'm still in my return window, I decided the buy the new one, do the hard drive shuffle and return the less new one.
I have a 500gb 7200rpm drive AND a 120gb SSD in the drive bay. I really never considered just swapping the drives into the new machine, but I thought I'd search and see if anyone had any success.
I had a couple thoughts on how I'm going to do the shuffle:
    1) Superduper clone the SSD back onto my 500gb. I the system as it is now started life on the 500gb. Superduper (registered) will do a backup only updating the changed files which shouldn't be too bad. I have my user directories (separate from the startup disk) on the 500gb so SD won't have to copy any of those files. Then I figured I could use the migration software to copy all my 'stuff' (minus user directory) back onto the newly reformatted SSD with 10.6 installed onto the new MBP.
    2) I was noticing that migration assistant can work from Time Machine, so I'll probably do that since my SSD time machine backup doesn't contain my gigantic user directory. I'll still do a SuperDuper backup just to be safe.
I'm tempted to throw my hard drive into an external usb to see if it boots just for the heck of it.

  • Purchased new MBP...  40GB Used?!?

I just purchased a new Mac Book Pro 15" with a 120GB Disk. It turns out that just over 40GB is used by the default installation! What's using up so much space?!? After moving over the files from my old iBook, I have less than 50GB free... =(

I understand that doing a custom install will help with the space that was eaten up by all the demos... I was just noticing that the "base" install on a new MBP seems to be a bit... Excessive... =)
I just did a bit of math and it turns out that I was a little off... My user directory is using about 23GB of space with the copied "stuff" from my old iBook. That leaves about 21 GB used by the rest of the system... Even if I remove the installed applications (which total about 3 GB) that still leaves 19 GB in use everywhere else... I'm about to do a full re-install just to reclaim some of that much needed space, but I'd love to just "know" what was eating it all up. =(
I'll do some more poking around to figure out what's going on...

  • How can I get ilife (iphoto/imovie) on my Used Retina ... Previously purchased new mbp 17 and have an Imac 27....

Well I just purchased another Retina mbp 15 and this ones a keeper (sold 2 before this was just looking for a mint one).  Now my issue is I cant get ilife (in particular imovie and iphoto) without purchasing it and I dont want to do that.... yet.
I did purchase a brand new mbp 17 in 2010 but not sure if I registered it or logged into the app store. Dont think I did because I dont see any downloads available in the app store.
I have an imac 27 Im using right now and I dug up the appllications cd it came with.
    My questions are:
How can I install ilife or any of the apps without buying them?
Are the applications one use only for the specific machines?
Is there any way to use the resource dvd to install onto my retina ?
(regarding this I have tried using remote disc and my retina wont show anything under remote disc when the cd is in my ima )
ANy input or help is appreciated. I did enjoy using imove and iphoto alot and would like to have them again.

I appreciate the replies. Grant if I have an Imac and the apps on the cd then what you are saying is it should be tied to my apple id and therefore I should be able to install them on my new macbook?
I dont recall when I bought my mbp 17 if it had a cd and back then it was my first mac.. dont think there was an app store just itunes. It isnt tied to my account but shouldnt it be? I guess the person who bought that 17 from me got a free bundle :/
Its not a matter of $30 I understand that fully. Its just its $30 wasted if I am able to get it.
What im confused about (and I dont care to argue apples reasoning for it) is tying ilife to 'that Mac alone" is just dumb when a new owner of a machine cant install it and has to buy it again. that means the original owner keeps the apps for any machine he wishes and it isnt for the machine.
I think im confusing myself and possibly answered my own question but ill leave it lol.

  • Moving iphoto from external HD to new MBP

I wouldl ike to copy iPhoto from my eMac to my new MBP. iPhoto is currently on an external HD, would it be best to use migration assistant to copy it to the laptop or to install fresh and then afterwards copy the old iPhoto to the new laptop? Does that make sense? I am new to transferring files from old to new computer. Thanks to anyone who can understand my question!

    lbell
Simply copy the entire iPhoto Library Folder from it's current location to the Pictures folder (in your Home Folder) on your new Mac.
Next, because there mighr be file permissions issues - especially if you've chnaged your User name - Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/BatChmod.png
(Credit to Old Toad for this one).
    Then Launch iPhoto.

  • New MBP w/lion; upgraded to iLife11 but iPhoto won't open old library?

I bought a new macbook pro in september. After completing a vacation iMovie, I noticed the new MBP didn't have iDVD on it to burn to send discs to family. I purchased iLife11 for this program but it also updated iPhoto. Pretty cool until I tried to open iPhoto11 and it won't open the old version's library... why? More importantly, how do I get around it? I have a Time Capsule so a backup or two exist if necessary... just want to get this project done without killing the hole weekend! Thanks!

As usual... found the answer after I posted this. I updated the upgrade when I installed iLife11 yesterday. It worked but I still had the problem. I thought I would try it again today to see if there were any additional updates... and KAPOW... there was, and problem FIXED! Thanks!

  • IPhoto crashes on import. Brand new MBP. Haven't used it before. Photostream still stuffed too.

This is the first time I've been disappointed with my mac. I've had them for years and never had any issues with any software.
The problem starts when I try to import photo's (both drag and drop and from a camera). It freezes for 5 secondsish- then shuts down. Everytime. Then I open it up again and tell it to import the photo's that weren't imported, and it crashes again. Its a cycle!
I was using Aperture on my old MB and decided to go back to iPhoto on my new MBP. Thinking this was a bad idea.
I don't have any 3ivx or whatever it is installed on my computer. It's 2 months old. Ive done a software update, everything is looking good. It's Version 9.21.

    Winging it a little here.
Launch ColorSync - it's in your Applcations/Utilities folder
See the Tab for Profile First Aid.
Foloow the instructions in that to repair the profiles. Restart your Mac and try import.
