Re: OBIEE comparisons

Hi can anyone tell me the differences between OBIEE and
1: OBI Standard Edition
2: OBIEE Plus
3: Cognos and Business Objects (main advantages of OBIEE over these 2)

Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) Plus comprises powerful BI server technology and BI presentation tools - referred to as Oracle BI Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) - and supplements them with specialty BI reporting tools secured in the Hyperion acquisition (Plus).
• OBIEE (formerly Siebel Business Analytics) includes:
- Oracle BI Server - a highly scalable, highly efficient query and analysis server that integrates data via sophisticated query federation capabilities from multiple relational, unstructured, OLAP, and pre-packaged application sources, whether Oracle or non-Oracle.
- Oracle BI Answers - a powerful ad-hoc query and analysis tool that works against a logical view of information from multiple data sources in a pure Web environment.
- Oracle BI Interactive Dashboards - rich, interactive pure Web dashboards that display dynamically personalized information based on the individual's role and identity.
- Oracle BI Publisher (formerly known as XML Publisher) - a highly scalable reporting engine capable of generating reports from multiple data sources in multiple formats via multiple delivery channels.
- Oracle BI Briefing Books — reports that capture a series of snapshots of an Oracle BI Dashboard or report allowing the information to be viewed offline presentation style.
- Oracle BI Disconnected Analytics — a packaged solution to offer Answers and Dashboards to mobile professionals on computers disconnected from the network.
- Oracle BI Office Plug-In — automatically synchronizes information from Answers to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Oracle BI Delivers — a business activity monitoring and alerting engine to capture and distribute notifications via multiple channels (such as e-mail, dashboards, and mobile devices) in response to predefined business events to speed decision making.
• OBIEE Plus (formerly Hyperion/Brio products) includes:
- Hyperion Financial Reporting — a reporting solution for multidimensional data (OLAP) that generates highly formatted, GAAP compliant, book quality financial and management reports and supports the emerging XBRL standard.
- Hyperion Web Analysis — a context driven, thin client reporting and analysis tool that enables the graphical interaction, presentation and reporting of multi-dimensional (OLAP) data.
- Hyperion Interactive Reporting — a “report centric” query and reporting tool that transforms data from heterogeneous sources into meaningful queries, dashboards and reports via connection through the Oracle BI Server or direct connection to underlying databases as needed.
- Hyperion SQR — a high performance engine and development language for high volume, pixel perfect report creation, spanning multiple enterprise data sources including SAP R/3 and SAP Business Information Warehouse.

I have a requirement where I need to create a date comparison report (Current Month vs. Prior Month vs Prior Month Year Ago vs YTD vs Prior YTD vs Rolling 3 months, etc) with multiple Measures (Quote count, Quote offered count, New Business count, etc). I understand that time series is an option, and have created the time series (which show up as measures).
    My problem is:
when creating the report (even as a pivot table) , OBIEE is not allowing me to drag the measure to rows, nor is it allowing me to drag the time series to columns. Also, I need to do conditional formating on some of the columns showing an up arrow for increased vs. prior month and down arrow for decreased vs. prior month.
Does anyone have a solution for this issue? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...
    Please advise and thanks!!!

    Jason,
You've been very helpful, but I guess I'm just not explaining myself that well. The Credit Memo's throw things off because they do not contain a "Paid Date" value. That field in the record is blank. Since it is blank the report query ignores them. Therefore when the report query returns all records that have a "Paid date" range of "x to y" they are never returned. This is a problem whenever a credit memo exists for an invoice because the "invoice total" never changes. So when a customer pays on their account for a particular invoice, they only pay what is due which is the "invoice total" minus any "credit" from the "Credit Memo". So when my A/R person receives payment they are showing the invoice paid in full because MAS automatically includes all invoices and credit memo's. My report does not because there is no data in the "Paid Date" field of the record for Credit Memos.
I've been doing alot research in trying to resolve this "exception" to my report. I think I may be on to something, but my knowledge of arrays is extremely limited. My resolution involves populating an array with the "invoice numbers" that are returned from the initial query from the supplied date range. Then using the "invoice numbers" from the array have it then populate my details section of the report with all of "invoice records" both the actual invoice record and any "credit memo" records. I can then group the records returned  based upon the "invoice number". then within that grouping I can performing my calculations to show whether or not the invoice has been paid in full. What do you think?  I've been able to populate an array with the invoice numbers based upon my date search range, but I have yet to figure out how to take that information and perform another lookup to pull in the rest of the data I need. Do you have any ideas?
    Thanks.  Bill

  • Issue passing dynamic paramters using GO URL in OBIEE 11g

    Hi All,
I am trying to implement a GO URL and pass 6 dynamic paramters to the target dashboard page.
The issue is that, When I navigate from the column which is having GO URL, It is just passing the first parameter among the 6 parameters.
    URL:
    '<a href=http://servername/analytics/
    saw.dll?GO&path=/shared/xxx/aa%20bb/report%20one
    &Action=Navigate&P0=6&P1=eq&P2="Fact%20-%20xxx".ID1&P3='||CAST("Dim - Abc"."One ID" AS CHAR)||'&P4=eq&P5="Fact%20-%20xxx".ID2&P6='||CAST("Dim - Abc"."Two ID" AS CHAR)||'&P7=lt&P8="Fact%20-%20xxx".DATE&P9='||CAST(TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY,1,"Time"."Day") AS CHAR)||'&P10=eq&P11="Fact%20-%20xxx"."Three%20ID"&P12='||CAST("Dim - Abc"."Three ID" AS CHAR)||'&P13=ge&P14="Fact%20-%20xxx".DATE1&P15='||CAST(TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY,1,"Time"."Day") AS CHAR)||'&P16=eq&P17="Time".Day&P18='||CAST("Time"."Day" AS CHAR)||'style="text-decoration:none;">'||"Dim - Abc.Name"||'<--/a>'
When I try with actual values for all the 6 parameters, The parameters are being passed perfectly.
Also I have tried passing each parameter individually in the same syntax as in the above URL and it is working fine.
Also I have tried the new syntax of GO URL i.e.,
    '<a href=http://servername/analytics/
    saw.dll?GO&path=/shared/xxx/aa%20bb/report%20one
    &Action=Navigate&col1="Fact%20-%20xxx".ID1&val1='||CAST("Dim - Abc"."One ID" AS CHAR)||'&op1=eq&col2="Fact%20-%20xxx".ID2&val2='||CAST("Dim - Abc"."Two ID" AS CHAR)||'&op2=eq&col3="Fact%20-%20xxx".DATE&val3='||CAST(TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY,1,"Time"."Day") AS CHAR)||'&op3=lt&col4="Fact%20-%20xxx"."Three%20ID"&val4='||CAST("Dim - Abc"."Three ID" AS CHAR)||'&op4=eq&col5="Fact%20-%20xxx".DATE1&val5='||CAST(TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY,1,"Time"."Day") AS CHAR)||'&op5=ge&col6="Time".Day&val6='||CAST("Time"."Day" AS CHAR)||&op6=eq'style="text-decoration:none;">'||"Dim - Abc.Name"||'<--/a>'
Even with this syntax, The issue is same that I am only able to pass the first filter.
    Anyone please help.
    Thanks in Advance.

To avoid encoding problems use POST method. Here is js example for OBIEE 10g, but I bellieve you will find similar XML syntax in 11g.

              goXML = goXML + '</sawx:expr>';

  • Physical Query in OBIEE 10g vs OBIEE 11g

    Hi Everyone,
We're in the middle of an OBIEE 10g to an OBIEE 11.1.1.6.4 upgrade and as part of our assembly testing we were planning on comparing the physical query generated for a report generated in obiee 10g vs the physical query for a report in obiee 11g.
After a couple reports we noticed that the query structure in 11g is completely different than the query structure in 10g. The reports still generated the same data in 10g vs 11g. So my question is:
    1) is it worth while (or necessary) to do a physical query comparison for an obiee 10g to 11g upgrade? or is validating the front-end report data & drill down/interactions adequate?
    2) what are some general reasons why a query generates differently in obiee 10g vs 11g?

Pl post details of OS versions, exact database versions (to 4 digits) and init.ora parameters of the 10g and 11g databases. Have statistics been gathered after the upgrade ?

  • Passing Chinese characters in OBIEE 11g GO URL to init the dashboard prompt

    Hi Experts,
Currently we are using OBIEE 11g and passing the dashboard prompt parameter values through the OBIEE go url. When we are passing English strings the dashboard prompt is initialized with the correct passing value. However for Chinese character it is not. I am using the URLEncoder.encode("parameter value", "UTF-8") encoding to encode the passing string.
Can anyone tell me what is the wrong in this approach? How can we pass any language strings to OBIEE 11g via go url?

  • Time series functions in OBIEE

    Hi
    I am new to OBIEE.
In Report i want to use the AGO function to find the previous quarter revenue
But the AGO function requires time dimension level as shown in following syntax
how should i insert it in the function
    Syntax
    AGO(expr, [time_level], offset)
    Thanks
    Sravanthi

Once you have day dimension with checked for 'Time dimension'
you can see day dimension in rpd expression builder, once you select the function you'll choose each columns.

  • [NQQuery log]: Physical SQL generated agaisnt 2 Database in OBIEE 11g

    Hi Experts,
I have a problem regarding the physical SQL generated by Query log.
    So this is the setup.
    SCENARIO 1:
    Oracle Data Warehouse DB
    - col1
    - col2
    - col3
    OLAP_OBIEE
    - col4
When I run these columns together in Analysis. It seems like the physical SQL generated in the Query log is partitioned with each other and I cant get the exact SQL so I can make comparison with the total record count in Analysis UI and the SQL developer.
select col1, col2, col3 from Oracle Data Warehouse tables
    select col4 from OLAP_OBIEE tables
    ================================================================
    SCENARIO 2:
    Oracle Data Warehouse DB
    - col1
    - col2
    - col3
    - col4
Running these columns together in Analysis. I am wondering why the physical SQL is somewhat also partitioned just like in SCENARIO 1.
select col1, col2, col3 from Oracle Data Warehouse tables
select col4 from Oracle Data Warehouse tables
Hope that you get what am I trying to say. :(
    Thanks,

Sorry for the confusion, in my Analysis report, I have a report where it generates 2 physical SQL in one Database, also I have a report where it uses 2 Database which also generates 2 physical SQL.
Below is the SQl generated in my Analysis report using 1 Database

  • Time Series Wizard in OBIEE 10.1.3.3

How do I accomplish the TIME SERIES WIZARD functionality that was present in Siebel Analytics 7.7 in OBIEE 10.1.3.3. This comparison measure feature seems to be removed in OBI.
Any inputs will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

There are several problems with the OBE given in the first url (http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe_bi/bi_ee_1013/bi_admin/biadmin.html#t11)
    (1) pre-built repository and other files (e.g., SH_PartTwo.rpd, SHQuota.xls) cited in the example are not included with download- at least not with 10.1.3.3.1 version I downloaded. When followed instructions to open SH.rpd (included in the download of 10.1.3.3.1) gave error and could not open it. (My DB version is 10.2, op system XP professional)
    (2) Looks like this OBE is a newer version - under Build Diemension Hierarchies the steps 33 (Customer dim), 34 (Promotion Dim) and 35 (Time Diemension) have been removed. This is good because in the older version of this OBE the time dimension (given in step 35) was wrong.
    (3) In Create Time Measure section cannot select month ago sales and month to date sales columns together in a query. When selected together gave error: pls refer to this thread -
    Time Series Measures
Hopefully the current version of this OBE will be updated with an example that has steps to create time dimensions (Calendar and Fiscal) and other steps so that columns created with AGO and TODATE functions can be selected together in a query.
    Thanks.

  • Year Over Year Comparison for Multiple Years

I have a business request where the client is asking for a year over year percentage comparison for multiple years
    So for example
              Applications
    2015     5
    2014     10
    2013     22
So in year 2015 we can see that applications is currently down (5-50/10 - [New-Old/Old] by -50% compared to year prior
In year 2014 we are down -55%
Ultimately I wanted to display the following
              Applications
    2015     -50%
    2014     -55%
    2013
I have an idea of how to do this for a single year, where a presentation variable is fed in then I can just do this year minus previous year.
I was wondering, how can I do this calculation or presentation in OBIEE? Can this be done within answers? Or does something need to be done in the RPD?

As long as your model is correctly done with a time hierarchy you can just use the time series function AGO to get the value of previous year.
So in the formula you can calculating your delta in % comparing the current year amount and the previous one.
You can do it in the analysis directly, but if you will often need to access "previous year measures" would be a good idea to add it in the RPD so you don't need to write the formula every single time.

    Hi ppl,
I am learning OBIEE using the tutorials and I am stuck at this step in
Direct Database request wherein I am trying to create a foreign key -- TIMES.TIME_ID = AGG_ST_CAT_DAY_SALES_F.TIME_ID
This is the error that I get:

I have tried debugging using google and searched here in the forums as well, but no one seems to have come across this error before.
I am stuck at this point while trying to create physical joins for aggregate tables.
    OBIEE version is 10.1.3.3.3

    ANyhelp is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hey,
    Thanks for a quick reply.
I checked the datatypes for both the columns and they are as follows:
    AGG_ST_CAL_DAY_SALES_F.TIME_ID is of Date datatype
TIMES.TIME_ID is also of Date datatype, TIME_ID is a primary key for this table.
I ran the query directly on the DB and it runs fine without errors, Is there any way to check the query that is being sent to the DB via OBIEE
    THanks,
    Abhilash

  • Compare Java based reporting to OBIEE

    Hello All,
Due to a lot of misconceptions, my current client thinks that a lot of their problems will be resolved by simply retiring OBIEE and write all the reports in Java.
Some requirements are unrealistic to ask from OBIEE and some are well...limitations.
The client has asked us to give him reasons why he still should be on OBIEE. Has anyone done a comparison of Java based reports and OBIEE (or any BI tool)?
Reasons why OBIEE stands out would also help.
    Thanks all!!

There are many, many reasons why to use OBIEE. One of the bigger reasons being you don't need to know anything about Java in order to build an Answer Report.
I've been asked a similar question in the past, to compare OBIEE versus Java based ADF. My response is that they have two completely different purposes.
--OBIEE is end-user/middle-user driven dashboards and ad-hoc analysis.
--Java/ADF is for power-users to pre-constructed reporting systems. (forgive me but I don't know the ad-hoc capabilities of Java/ADF)
If your client has full-time java resources to commit to the creation and maintenance of a Java environment, then by all means they should probably go that route. But keep in mind that as new uses want to see different data layouts and different data sets, your java team will quickly become overburdened.
OBIEE relieves the strain on the java (IT) team and allows end-users to drive reporting with the relatively occasional support by IT.
Yes, OBIEE does have limitations, but always keep in mind that a) It's an ad-hoc Dashboard framework and not an ad-hoc java framework which has much greater flexibility but requires much more technical expertise b) There is a major release of OBIEE (11g) just around the corner that is about to change the game in terms of how OBIEE can be used. You should have your client stay on board until they can at least see the new features.
Good luck and if you found this post useful, please award points!
    Best regards,
    -Joe

  • OBIEE Vs MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP

    Hi Gurus,
We need to present to customer a comparison between OBIEE 10.1.3.4 and SIMBA´S "MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP" to attack OLAP Cubes in 11gR2.
Of course OBIEE is more powerful and complete, but technically, we would like to know which OBIEE capabilities (apart from ibots, scheduling, hability of representing information) are not available or cant´t be utilized from SIMBA´s Sw.
Are there known limitations of MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP?
Is it truth that in the new OBIEE release the Microsoft Office add in is going to be more powerfull or is it going to remain the same?
Thanks in advance for your answers,
    Best Regards,

  • OBIEE Marketing Module 10g vs 11g

    Hi all,
I was wondering if you guys could help me.
I've seen a lot of comparisons between both OBIEE 10g and 11g.
However, what I'm trying to find are the differences between their Marketing modules, could anyone help me on that?
    Regards,
    Gonçalo

RPD metadata-wise there's no real difference. Target Levels, Qualified List Items, List Catalogs, Conformed Dimension Links. That's about it. Just checked it against the Siebel Analytics 7.7 content from 2004 last week and it hasn't really moved.
Siebel-side I can't give you an exhaustive answer though, sorry.

  • Obiee 11g multidimensional cubes are very slow

    Hi,
I've noticed that navigation in multidimensional cubes by obiee11g is very very slow, above all in comparison with the microsoft excel plugin.
I've Essbase 11.1.3 (I hope to remind well) and obiee 11.1.1.3.0.
    Someone have the same problem?
    Thanks

    HI Andy ,
Observer the similar kind of performance problem in OBIEE 11g with Oracle Cube build using AWM 11g version .
The same cube access using OBIEE 10g repository is very fast .
I have seen one of my 10g report coming within 30 secs where in 11g it is even hard to come on before 5 minutes .
Just have seen in SR that there are inherent problem of OBIEE 11.1.1.5 version regarding the performance and Oracle asked to apply couple of patch to fix the behavior .

  • What are advantages and disadvantages between Microstrategy 9 vs OBIEE 11g

As a reference source exists the whitepaper "Compare to Oracle OBIEE":
    http://www.microstrategy.com/quicktours/oracle
I haven't found a comparison version of the document written by Oracle.
I'd like to hear unbiased opinions of colleagues on which of these two platforms is the best option for developing BI applications.
