RE: Video shift

Have a problem with video and graphics shifting when I transition between video and graphics with text added. Any ideas why?

Describe your set-up a little bit more, please. In particular, what transition are you using?
It's probably no help to you, but I have Klaus Eiperle's awesome CGM DVE Complete set and had the oddest issue with the Luma Color Dissolve from it once.
On V1, I used the Luma Color Dissolve to transition between rendered .movs that I spit out of Motion. Somehow, the Dissolve was affecting the alpha channel and location of the still image superimposed over all these clips on V2 (which was the logo for the store).
After rendering, I played back and the logo would literally dance - as if it was being shifted 1 pixel up - and the background would become opaque over every transition. Once the transition was done, the superimposed image would revert to it's proper position and the alpha channel would be restored.
I didn't really have time to dig real deep, so I ultimately exported V1 as a self-contained movie and then superimposed the logo over that (which worked without a hitch).

  • Video shifting with text

    I have text (from text generator) on V2 and a still on V1
    Right at the cut point, the video shifts by a pixel or two.
    I can't figure it out. I have RT settings enabled, have rendered, etc. but to no avail. It is not the image since I have swapped it out with another image and a clip of video as well....same thing happens. There is no motion on either the clip or the text just a simple V2 over V1. Can anyone help?

    the filter worked in that the video does not shift. what now?<<</div>
    First, give me a green star!
    Seriously though, this problem first started appearing with FCP 4. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to be a problem. I found the filter trick to be an effective workaround and have been applying a filter to ALL still images ever since.
    FWIW it doesn't have to be the 3-Way Color Corrector ... any filter (at default or customized settings) will do. I decided to just add the 3-Way CC filter by default since most photos could use a bit of tweaking anyway - plus, its a RT filter making quick previewing possible.

  • Video shift during dissolve

    I'm working on a video and I have taken a couple clips and squeezed them down so that they are within the title safe makers... so video with a black box is what it looks like after being shrunk/squeezed down. When I add a dissolve in between the two similar squeezed clips I get a video shift during the disolve.
    If I drop the same clips without squeezing them down and add a dissolve it looks just fine.
    Why do I get a video shift during the dissolve when the clips have been squeezed down? and how can I fix the problem of getting a good dissolve with a squeezed down look without making still images out of them?

    From your description it sounds like your clips are different sizes.
    Double click each clip individually and then click on the Motion tab in the viewer.
    For what you're trying to achieve you probably want make sure they are both at an 80% scale

  • Importing flash video shifts cells

    When I import flash video to my pages that were cut in
    photoshop, the cells shift around.
    Does anyone know what the problem might be?

    To expand a little on what Walt says, this symptom is the
    "Poster Child" (so
    to speak) for why one should not use graphics programs to
    write HTML.
    Applications like Photoshop and Fireworks are marketed
    partially on the
    basis that they can build your page for you, and this is
    true, but what they
    do not tell you is that the resulting pages are suitable ONLY
    for
    prototyping, and NOT for production-grade web pages. The
    layouts that are
    built are monolithic and 'brittle' meaning that as soon as
    the "shape" of
    the contents on the page change away from what was on the
    canvas in the
    graphics application when you exported the HTML, the layout
    shifts and
    'breaks'. They do their job well, these graphics apps, but
    only if you
    understand where and when to use them....

  • Video Shifted in Canvas

    Hi folks
    I'm doing some consultancy / training with a group using FCE 3.5.1 and we're experiencing a glitch on transitions. If i drop a cross dissolve over an edit, the output on the canvas shows the video as being shifted 1/8 to the left so you can see the left hand side of the frame over on the right with a green line which represents the true edge of the video. I've tried rendering but FCE is outputting the glitch anyway. I'm doing the edit on a Intel iMac with 10.4.10 all updates applied.
    My 1st course is usually to delete and reinstall QT, but as these aren't my machines i'm holding off.
    Any similar problems / fixes encountered here?
    In the old days i'd have tweaked the horizontal adjust and then smacked the the top of the TV real hard.
    A further note. Prior to my being called. Some of the group, finding FCE quite difficult had started their edits in iMovie 7. As the deadline is pretty tight and some edits were near completion, i exported them as QT DVPal 48 video and imported this into FCE.
    Might this be an issue?

    The problem is SOLVED!
    Like a few other posters the problem i had was with the video format. The group had started with .DV files they'd extracted from iMovie. I Converted the files (via Mpeg Streamclip) into Native PAL files, set up the new FCE project using the native DV PAL settings, Saved it. And then imported converted video files.
    Sequence Settings as they should be.
    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2165/1799338688_ae080effe2.jpg?v=0
    Bearing in mind my initial reason for running the video though Streamclip was because nothing would render. The converted video files played back beautifully so i thought i didn't have a problem. However...
    The offending Video Settings
    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2115/1798494821_6302eb691b.jpg?v=0
    What i didn't do was check the properties of the converted video files in FCE. Even though i "thought" I'd created QT DV PAL 48Khz 720 x 576 (as typed) what i'd actually created were 784 x 576... Don't ask me how... This caused a shift across transitions on the Canvas window (see screen grab) That vertical green line in the right is the actual edge of the video, anything to the right of it should be on the LEFT hand side of the video!
    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2368/1798468781_b4f41f18b1.jpg?v=0
    Anyway, following Tom's instructions i rechecked the settings and in QT Pro movie properties changed 784 x 576 to 720 x 756 saved, reopened the project and the world is good again.
    On a further note though i do occasionally get odd results from my exported video. A 720 x 404 export from iStopmotion displayed as HD resolution when the QT file was played back...
    Many thanks to Tom and a raised eyebrow for Quicktime....

  • Dynamic Video shifting

    I'm creating a custom video player where the user can select to play the same video at different speeds (100%, 75%, and 50%).  We have rendered 3 different MP4 files, one for each speed, and then there is a mechanism in the video player to load each video as the user demands it.  It works fine so far, except that when a new video loads, it begins to play from the beginning, not at the point where the previous video left off (which is crucial).
    I thought it would be as simple as using either ns.play("videoname", videotime) or using a ns.seek(videotime), but in ether case, the new video still will only play from the beginning.
    Here is the code, which includes some calculation for adjust the time depending on the shift from 100%, 75%, and 50%.
    function switchSpeedVideo() {
    var currentTime:Number = ns.time;
    output.text = currentTime.toString(); // outputs correctly
    var adjustedTime:Number = (ns.time) * speedFactor;
    output.text = adjustedTime.toString(); // outputs correctly
    ns.play(currentVideoURL, adjustedTime);
    ns.seek(adjustedTime);
    videoSwitch = false;
    I've also tried using just, without seek:
    ns.play(currentVideoURL, adjustedTime);
    and I've tried both this way:
    ns.play(currentVideoURL);
    ns.seek(adjustedTime)
    What is missing here?  Currently, I am using HTTP connection ("HTTP Pseudo Streaming" with Wowza on SimpleCDN).  Does this require RTMP?

    As I understand it, Wowza and FMS are very similar. If someone can show me that the ActionScript methods and RTMP methods are different for Wowza than they are for FMS -- then that would be VERY useful information to me.  Yet, until then, I am assuming that the methods are the same.
    I am only using HTTP currently as we have not yet been able to get RTMP to work (another problem, which may be related to this problem).
    Yet the dynamic seeking method I am describing above should be possible with ether streaming media system.  Regardless of which system, my questions are:
    1) is RTMP required to get the results I am seeking (described above)
    2) or what else do I need to know?
    I am querying here (as well as with Wowza forums), as again, this may be more of an ActionScript / RTMP / FLV / FMS / Flash streaming technology in general type of question ...
    As we are on a tight production line (for a video site that goes public in a few days), I am open to receiving any useful information I can get.

  • FCP TEXT Shifting when applied to Timeline

    This is driving me crazy...I have two tracks of video. They are scaled down to 50% and side by side on the screen. I place text on the timeline above the video and when the text appears it Shifts and makes the video shift as well. I have 3 other sections in the program with the same sequence....and it is fine. What is going on ....anyone?

    Try copying the text where it worked and then pasting it in the section where it won't. Also, make sure to clear all ins and outs on the timeline.

  • Unwanted Frame Shifts

    I am completing a relatively large video composition drawing from found footage (analogue source).
    I captured everything at 29.97 fps, DV NTSC, outputting the same to quicktime.
    Happened initially with FC 6.0, just updated to 7.0 (update didn't resolve issue in project).
    I am having issues with frames slipping/shifting about 1-3 frames away from my original edit. Its noticeable mostly through audio, but there are several spots where the video shift is noticeable as well.
    It was initially only through a longer capture (about 7 gigs) but I know have it happening from several other captures (roughly 3 gigs each).
    While most shifts are 1-3 frames, I had one earlier on of about 1 and a half seconds. (It is rather a trial to set it all right by hand.)
    It has happened to edits that have been made weeks ago and have been stable. I feel it might have something to do with the rendering, as when I found in spots where I left the sequence unrendered everything stayed put.
    As I need to render to export, I'm not sure how to resolve this.
    Needless to say, this is all very trying.
    Thanks!

    You can adjust the cropping under the crop feature.
    Most of the time after you place an image into your timeline automatic ken burns would be applied which you would have to change back to a certain crop that you prefer.  Now when you place a video especially when the video clip has a large image size, iMovie will apply a random crop which you would also have to change to the way you want it through the crop settings.

  • Still image with motion has flicker pulsating problem

    I use FCP 5.0.4
    I have read the many threads about this subject and am still not able to succeed in getting rid of the flicker/pulsating in a still image with motion.
    I would say about 25% of the stills with motion have the jitters; all the rest look great.
    The first thing I tried was
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Field Shift:none
    as well as
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter min, med, and max.
    Maybe 5% were corrected with this, but the other 20% still had the jitters even after using a combination of the above or by themselves.
    I just burned a test DVD using a variety of the persistently jittery stills from my current project and although the jitters change a bit, they were still there so all of these failed:
    1. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Upper (odd)
    2. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Flicker Filter minimal
    3. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Flicker Filter max
    4. Effects:Video Filters:Color Correction:Broadcast Safe conservative 115
    5. Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter max
    6. All the tricks together which means
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace set at Upper (odd)
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter max
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Shift Fields: none
    Effects:Video Filters:Color Correction:Broadcast Safe conservative 115
    I know this issue has been kicked around a lot and i know some folks are not happy that it has to be kicked around at all. But I am doing something wrong because my DVDs look very un-PRO. Would anyone like to talk me through this nightmare preferably with as many details as possible since I am obviously missing something critical.
    Thanks in advance.

    There is no 'secret formula'. It just takes thinking through the issues.
    1. Set the image size for each image that makes sense within the context of your project. Going significantly larger than the displayed area of that image (including movement) is just asking FCP to do additional work to resize the image. FCP is less sophisticated at resizing images than Photoshop. Use Photoshop and your planning of the movie to get the images to the appropriate size.
    2. Wasted effort and totally irrelevant- you could set it to 7200 dpi if it makes you feel better.
    3. Good idea - be sure to knock down areas of pure or very bright white. These are the elements that will give you the most trouble.
    4. Don't do this unless you want to throw away HALF the picture information. Deinterlace deletes half the picture and then photoshop recreates it through interpolation of the remaining half of the picture. Why do this?
    5. Make your determination based on what works. If you have properly exposed and sized the material, the need to blur is greatly reduced. ONLY do it on the images that need it. Why degrade every image if you do not need to do so?
    6. See number 5
    7. Lay out your time line early, view the work on an external broadcast monitor and only mess about with the images that require it.
    In the psycho business they have term for much of the referenced post - it's called superstitious behavior. Basically it comes down to "It worked before so we recommend it to everyone without regard to their situation" ... here's another example:
    Many years ago in my architecture practice, we had one of the early 512k macs (upgraded from the 128k!) I needed to show one of the interns how to create a project budget spread sheet in Excel. Inadvertently I clicked on Word, said "oops", closed it and opened Excel and we went to work.
    A week later I was walking by the computer and overheard the same intern explaining how to work with Excel to another architect. "First you open Word, close it, THEN you open Excel", she explained. When asked by her 'trainee', why do you have to open Word first, wouldn't it just be easier to simply open Excel? Her answer was just perfect, "Well, it works every time, what's wrong with that?" so it goes ...
    good luck with your project.

  • IMovie 6.0.3 timeline conundrum: adding photo without losing sync

    How does one add a photo to an existing video with audio in 6.0.3 so that it simply replaces, for example, 5 seconds of the video WITHOUT moving the rest of the video?  IOW, I don't want the video or audio to move at all, just for the inserted image to replace the 5 seconds of video at that place.  I can't seem to do it without the video shifting 5 seconds.  I have extracted the audio and tried every combination of locking audio and dragging the photo to no avail.
    Obviously it's a simple thing, but I can't find any reference to this in any literature!  :  )    Thanks.

  • Decklink & FCP4.5

    Is anyone out there using the basic decklink card with FCP 4.5HD and OS 10.4.3? I can control my DSR1800 deck and get sound, but no picture in the decklink control program or in FCP capture. I spoke with the company and they said to get version 5 of FCP, but I was wondering if anyone on this board has been able to use decklink with FCP 4.5. I'm using it on a Dual 867 running 2gigs of RAM and OS 10.4.3 with a Magma Chasis holding 3 mirrored RAIDs.

    try applying the "Shift Fields" filter to a nest of your sequence (Effects > Video Filters > Video > Shift Fields)
    alternatively you could use the "De-interlace" filter (Effects > Video Filters > Video > De-interlace)
    plus, next time, you might want to consider capturing direct to the DV codec, via the Decklink, for projects that are aimed for DV output
    hope it helpss
    for your reference: theres no inherent problem with using upper field clips in a lower field sequence (or visa versa) as long as no rendering is done ... it is only the rendered video that will be jerky, because that is the video that has been created by FCP where the source dominance does not match the target dominance. FCP chooses the target dominance according to your sequence settings.

  • IMovie to FCE - should I invest?

    I am quickly outgrowing iMovie, but I have concerns about stepping up to FCE. Below are three frustrating problems in iMovie - there are many unresolved posts regarding these issues. Can anyone tell me if they've experienced the same problems in FCE?
    Thanks.
    1. Blurred / pixelated titles: Adding titles looks great in iMovie, but when I export, even in "full quality", the titles become blurred, pixelated, and look very unprofessional. Does FCE look better?
    2. Adding transitions causes audio/video sync issues: When adding, say, a "cross dissolve" in iMovie to two video clips (call them clip A and clip B), clip B shifts significantly - by 18 frames - causing obvious sync issues. I've read a lot in the FCE discussions about "handles", but can someone tell me if this iMovie problem exists in FCE? I do a lot of music video editing, so the audio/video must stay in sync for transitions.
    3. Moving clips around / deleting clip - audio doesn't go with the clip: Say I've exctracted audio for Clip B (I always extract audio so I can create volume fades). I decide to cut off one second at the beginning of clip B. I highlight that one second and hit "delete". The video shifts to butt up against clip A, but the audio does not. Does FCE do this as well?
    Thanks again for your help.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I'm a whiz kid, I guess.
    I went to college for video production having no experience whatsoever. I didn't even know what Firewire, miniDV or an NLE was. My first project ever I cut together was on Final Cut Pro 3 after getting about a 15 minute demonstration from a professor.
    Looking back on it, I spent a lot of time on getting the basics down, and the project was crap. But just spending the time with program put me way ahead of my classmates when I took my first actual production class.
    In fact, I was never really able to get the hang of iMovie. The lack of in and out points, the bizarre switch between camera and playback mode, the obnoxious way it handles audio tracks just left me so frustrated (I'm sure some of this has changed in recent versions).
    My point is, I don't think FCE is the more difficult program. Yes, it is more intimidating, because it doesn't hold your hand. But don't let that fool you, because you might have a lot of "Oh!" moments where something in FCE makes a lot more sense than it ever did in iMovie. It's just a matter of switching to a new way of thinking about cutting. I honestly don't think it's hard, just different.
    And remember, the manual is your friend.

  • Smooth Cam not exporting properly in FCP 7.03 - please help

    Hello
    I have a 30 minute video edit. A small number of clips have the smooth cam filter applied with default settings. When I export the finished project to a number of varied settings - pro res, pro res LT, apple tv, iphone etc... All the smooth cam clips are jittery and juddering -  and are not working for some reason.
    I have done a bit of research and apparently it's a bug in FCP 7.03 with interlaced footage (progressive works fine, apparently). All the source footage was transcoded to pro res.
    Someone said that putting the clips in motion and smoothing them out in optical flow would work and people had results. However I have no clue how to do this..
    Can someone please help me - I need to render a finished project today..
    Thanks in advance
    Nick

    Apparently it's a bug with Smoothcam's handling of interlaced footage in FCP 7.0.3 ... there's a post over on the Creative COW website detailing using Motion instead as Finnur mentions above.  Here's my own quick summary of that for those that aren't used to it :
    In FCP select the clip instance and choose FIle > Send To > Motion Project (or right click and choose Send To > Motion Project) and save the Exported clip to your scratch disk
    The exported clip will open in Motion. Click the clip to select it and then from the toolbar at the top of the main window choose ➀ Add Behavior > Motion Tracking > Stabilize
    Next choose ➁ HUD (heads up display), and in that window ➂ set Method : Smooth, Borders : Zoom, and select Adjust : Position & Scale, and click the Movement : Analyze button
    When the Analysis is complete, choose Motion menu > Quit, and press "Save" when prompted.
    When you return to FCP the smoothed Motion project (.motn) should be sitting in the sequence in place of the original clip ... it'll probably need rendering .
    Personally, I'd be inclined to just try adding the Shift Fields filter (Effects > Video Filters > Video > Shift Fields) to the jittery Smoothcam shot in FCP first, and see if that works, before jumping through the Motion hoops.
    Hope it helps
    Andy

  • Best way to ELIMINATE the MORAY EFFECT in a photograph that is moving?

    Hi.
    I have a shot of a woman in a striped dress which has a slight move on it. When I export my sequence to QT and watch in the QT player, the image looks great.
    But when I burn a dvd using DVDStudio pro and watch it on a monitor, the striped dress creates that nasty moray effect that is TOTALLY distracting....
    How to eliminate this? Is it simply to deinterlace that particular shot in my sequence?
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mark
    (sorry, I unintentionally posted this to the Motion forum as well)

    Have you tried a quick test with De-Interlace?
    I'll hope someone has a great fix, as I run into this from time to time.
    My solution to date has been to dupe the clip on a track above and place a very slight gaussian blur filter on the top clip, then add a Garbage Matte and/or Mask Shape/Mask Feather to iso the problematic area..
    Might be able to use CC3way Limit Effect and tweak some levels...haven't tried that.
    IIRC, I've tried 1pixel vertical shift in Motion tab and/or several of the Video Filters/Video-Shift Fields/Flicker Filter/Image Stabilizer...all to no acceptable effect.
    Maybe I've just never correctly tweaked any of the filters. Dupe/Mask/Blur has worked.
