Reader won't start, reinstall doesn't help

Hi,
Having trouble with a couple of computers where Adobe Reader won't start up. This is only hapenning on two of our workstations. All are Windows 7 64 bit fully patched. Anti-virus is ESET. Reader is latest 11.0.6.
Upon log in you are presented with an error dialogue titled "reader_sl.exe - application error" with the text "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022). Click OK to close the application."
When you try to start Reader, you get the "Adobe Reader Protected Mode" dialogue. Attempting to open without protected mode results in a "Fatal Error" dialogue stating "Acrobat failed to load its Core DLL".
What I've tried so far includes removing then reinstalling Reader,  using the Reader cleanup app and then reinstalling, running a full virus scan, disabling AV, using the TDSSKiller app from Kaspersky.
Anyone have any clues on how to get Reader working or what I should be debugging next?
Thanks.
Ronny

Same problem here, have done the following to try and resolve.
Ran 3 different Rootkit Detectors including Kapersky.
Ran Sophos Scan
Ran sfc /scannow
have reinstalled twice, including a full uninstall and also using the Adobe Clean tool.
Getting very upset and frustrated with this issue, its not malware related in this instance and Adobe need to get their act together.
Have worked in IT support for years now and I have seen more issues with Reader in the last month than ever.
Its become a horrible buggy piece of software.
EDIT: Not to mention the error code is ridiculous, what DLL are we even talking about here?
So frustrated... FML

  • Adobe Reader won't start automatically

I've downloaded Adobe Reader to my Windows8 system,, but when I try to open a pdf file fom on-line it asks me which App I want to use, but Reader isn't listed as a choice.  When I clik look for other Apps on computer, I can't find Reader anywhere (not in programs, documents, etc).  It will not start automatically.  The only way I can't make it work is by Saving the pdf file, then going to my graphic start page and cliking the Adobe reader icon which has been there (and only there) since it was downloaded.  It's really time consuming and I have a lot of psf files I have to go back and delte from my downloads

the App version self-loaded and it worked initially whenever I tried to open a pdf file, but this is a new touchscreen Acer and I'm used to having actual programs, not Apps and I don't quite understand it yet...Of course like everything else with Windows 8, most thing don't work the way they used to  after you do any updates.   I'd love to go back to Windows 7, or even XP.  I got this for Christmas and so far (according to it's own software program), it's shut down a total of 418 times, the majority of causes had to do with Explorer.

  • My Computer Won't Start Up!  Please Help!!!!!!!!!

Two nights ago my wife was surfing the web and the web page froze. She rebooted the computer and now it won't start up. The Apple shows on the screen and the circle begins to move but then it just stops. I tried holding down the option button during boot up but it doesn't help. What can I do? Is my computer fried? How can I fix it?

  • I deleted my extensions manager and now my Mac won't start up. Please Help!!

I have an IMac, 24" model, running OS X. For the past several days, little warning windows have been popping up with this annoying beep, telling me that my computer was infected with various viruses. 4, to be exact. Also, while on the internet, random pop-up windows have appeared, so I thought I did have a virus. So, to correct the matter (or attempt to), I deleted my preferences folder from the system folder, as well as the extensions manager.
Now, the computer won't start up past the white logo screen with the turning gear thingy. I've tried resetting the PRAM, and starting in safe mode, and safe mode with the progress screen, and even something there while holding the option key (that one gave me an icon of my HD, but clicking on it took me back to an endless wait on the white screen). I've tried starting from the disk that came with the computer (I held the C key) but not only doesn't the computer start from the disk, it spits the disk out. I don't understand. The computer was fine until I deleted the ext. mgr and preferences, so it can't be that the computer went bad or something.
I don't know what else to do here. I do have an extended service warranty with Best Buy, but I wanted to see if there was some way to fix this before hauling this thing off to the store. Any suggestions? I'm desperate here, because anything and everything I've tried (based on all the try-this and try-thats I found on the internet), nothing has worked.
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

Well done! You've succeeded in turning your Mac into a useless brick.
Deleting the System/Library/extensions folder and the associated manager removed most of the functionality from your OS.
And all to get rid of what sounds like the MacDefender trojan or a variant.
    ref; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4650 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4651
You may have a slim chance of recovering if it will still boot in Target Disc Mode; in which case you can use another Mac to install the system remotely.
And I doubt your warranty with Best Buy is going to cover user "error."

  • Adobe reader won't start

On my virgin system (no malware), win 7 x64 was a good working old adobe reader 9.
Offered an update, I accepted for update XI. And since them won't run any adobe reader.
I tried reinstall, repair, cleaning tool, restart you offered before.
I tried it on a different but similar, virgin machine and received the same error.
Came up a frosty adobe reader window and after 5 sec it disappears. Nothing helps...
I don't want to complaining about your free reader, but... It was not a great job...

    Three things to try...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • SmugMug Uploader has crippled Bridge; De/Reinstalling Doesn't Help

    Hi -  and help!!
I've used various version of File Manager/Bridge for about 4 years without much trouble, & currently have Photoshop CS3 on a MacBook Pro running Leopard.  A few days ago I made the fateful & apparently lethal decision to install the SmugMug uploader.  The result was that Bridge got infected with some evil bug that makes it crash within 20 seconds of being launched - every time.  I de-installed & reinstalled Bridge - no help.  I de-installed and re-installed Photoshop, Bridge and all components - two times.  Didn't help.  So - I basically now have a computer that is specially configured to run any software that's loaded on it EXCEPT Bridge.
The SmugMug people say that Adobe actually wrote & support the SmugMug uploader - very bad for SM's branding because it's obviously very flawed, and has the SM name all over it!  But I don't really care who wrote the code - I just want it off, off, off my system.  Can anyone help?  I've been using Macs for 25 years now (literally!) and have been a heavy Internet/WWW user since 1994 and never had anything remotely this destructive happen to me (which I guess makes me lucky!  But I still want it to stop...!
Btw a number of people complained about precisely this problem on the SmugMug forums:
    http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=105134
but apparently none of them were lucky enough to have a problem that literally will not go away with repeated installs. One person had luck when they
"disabled the Photoshop Services startup" - but I'm pretty sure I did this (by going to Tools/Photoshop Services and switching it off - did I do it right?) but to no avail.
Thanks to anyone who can help with this!
    - W -
PS - Looking in Bridge's "Plug-Ins" folder on my hard drive, I don't see anything that's obviously the diabolical SmugMug code - but if it has a cleverly concealed name or something, please let me know!

    Hi,
Here's the paths for the Mac on 10.5 (Leopard). I don't have 10.4 (Tiger) in front of me to check for differences. I didn't work on any Online Services testing so I can't confirm this solution, but it seems a reasonable try (thanks for the post!). Save the .dat files somewhere locally first, instead of deleting them just in case.
    /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Online Services/Adobe Creative Suite 3.0/cache
    /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Online Services/Adobe Creative Suite 3.0/clients/Adobe Creative Suite 3.0/sessions
    So:
    1) Using Bridge or Finder create a new folder for storing the suspect .dat files
    2) with a new window, browse to the directories list above
    3) move the .dat files to the folder created in step 1)
    4) quit and relaunch Bridge
    regards,
    steve

I had this occur tonight and figured out how to fix it.  I was in the middle of an upload when the power went out.  After the power came back, I tried to restart the pc and continue the upload but I incurred the same symptoms as the original poster.
One of two files is corrupted.  I don't know which it is, but the system rebuilds them the next time you upload and everything is fine.
    Steps:
    1)  In bridge, select "Edit", then "Preferences".  Select the "Startup Scripts" tab.
    2)  Click the "Reveal Scripts in Explorer" button.
    3)  An explorer window will open.  Navigate to "Adobe", "Online Services", "Adobe Creative Suite 3.0", and then "Cache".
    4)  You should find one or more  files with the extension .dat in this folder.  Delete them.
    5)  Navigate further down the tree to "Adobe", "Online Services", "Adobe Creative Suite 3.0", "Clients", "Adobe Creative Suite", and then "sessions"
    6)  Once again, you will find one or more .dat files.  Delete them.
Close and restart Bridge, making sure that you have "Photoshop Services" checked in the startup preferences.
You probably will have to let bridge rediscover the online services, but once that is done, you should be golden.

  • Thunderbird will only open on one local folder. No other window, no access to accounts. Reinstalling doesn't help.

I have 4 accounts and about 30 local folders. Thunderbird is stuck with one local folder open. Cannot access any other page, or any accounts. Reinstalling does not help, nor does restarting the computer. I have Thunderbird 31.5.0 on Yosemite 10.10.2.

Turn your Folder Pane back on. View-Layout-Folder Pane if using the Menu Bar.
If using the AppMenu button it is AppMenu button

  • ITunes won't open and reinstalling doesn't help

Each time I try to open iTunes, I get the following error:
"The folder 'iTunes' cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is in the 'My Music' folder."
I have tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it, but I always get the same message when I try to open it. I had been using it without any problems for the past year, but last month this issue began and I'm not sure why.
Also, I keep my music files on my external drive, but iTunes is installed on my computer. Not sure if this has anything to do with it.

    Try rebuilding the library:

  • Photoshop won't start . . . Help!!!

I just bought a 24" iMac with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4 GB of RAM. I used the migration assistant to transfer all of my programs from my old (very old) 800 MHz iMac. Everything works fine except for Photoshop 7.0 and Image Ready. I try to start Photoshop and the logo screen comes up and it doesn't get any further than "Reading preferences..." and I get "An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred because of a program error. Photoshop will now exit."
I have tried deleting the preferences, didn't help. I tried repairing permissions, didn't help. I tried reinstalling from the disk, didn't help. I tried reinstalling in Safe Mode, didn't help. I am partially cross-eyed from scouring the web trying to find ANYTHING that remotely resembles my problem, to no avail. Can anyone help me out?? PLEASE!!!

I've made an attempt to contact my guy and am waiting to hear back. He's a decent guy who I have dealt with pretty extensively through my last employer. Not to mention he's pretty close distance wise.
By midday tomorrow I'll contact your guy either way. I appreciate your going out of your way for me and making that call. I still have to be frugal and do a bit of shopping around before I pull the trigger. I hope you can understand.

  • Menu bar, finder and aperture not displaying correctly.  Reinstall doesn't help, can't upgrade to 10.8

Hi.  Immensely frustrated.  A few weeks ago, I don't know what happened, I started experiencing all sorts of problems.  These are:
The upper right side menu bar doesn't display all the icons, they're there but invisible
Aperture isn't displaying images, instead I get weird digital patterns (see screen capture)
Finder window lost its icons too.  Again, they work, but are invisible.
    frequent crashes
can't upgrade to mountain lion, I get an error that the file was corrupted during dowload (have tried several times)
    Command-R doesn't work
Reinstall from startup disk didn't change anything
    I'm running 10.7 on an iMac 27
    What can I do?

No, I wish that was the issue.  I've attached another screenshot for further clarity.

  • ITunes not working, reinstalling doesn't help

iTunes has stopped working on my computer. When I run it, it starts up normally. As soon as I select any option, it hangs showing the "moving circle" cursor.
I have completely uninstalled iTunes (using the instructions on the website including iTunes, Quicktime, Bonjour, Apple mobile devices, and apple shared software) and removed all directories associated with iTunes.
When I reinstalled iTunes it come up logged into my iTunes account so apparently the instructions on the website do not completely remove it. I also had the same problem.
Over the last few weeks my problems with iTunes have gotten progressively worse.
They began with my iPad. At this point iTunes itself was fine. I'd plug the iPad into iTunes (either starting up with it conneceted or plugging it in after iTunes was running) and iTunes would hang. This would last for about 5 minutes and then iTunes would become responsive again, but the iPad would not show up. After I would get control of iTunes back, I ran the diagnostics under help and the iPad was recoginized. My iPad also showed up as a device under windows. My iPhone 4 and iPod nano both still worked properly.
I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes using the instructions on the website and it didn't help.
I left the situation as it was for a couple weeks, not syncing my iPad. Then today, my iPhone 4 began doing the same time. iTunes would hang for 5 minutes with my phone connecetd and then the phone would fail to show up when I got control back.
I again uninstalled iTunes, but this time I renamed the iTunes directory so that it would build a new one when I reinstalled.
After reinstalling, iTunes comes up. Shows an empty library which I expected, shows me logged into my iTunes account which I didn't expect, and it hangs (with the moving blue circle cursor) whenever I try to do anything.
I also tested plugging my iPad and iPgone into another computer with iTunes installed and they work fine.
Any help would be really appreciated.
    Thanks

I did follow the instructions and deleted the preference files. This didn't help, but did get iTunes to treat the installation as a new one.
A new version of iTunes came out today, so I did a complete uninstall and reinstall. I again removed the preference files. After installing, iTunes itself seemes to be working. I can log in with my Apple ID and it does not hang anymore. Unfortuantely the problem with attaching my iPhone 4 and iPad still occurs. When I plug them in iTunes "hangs" for about 5 minutes. When iTunes becomes responsive again, the devices do not show up. Windows recognizes the devices and iTunes diagnostics also reconize the devices even down to the serial number. Maybe resetting the devices would help, but you can understand I how reluctant I am to do anything that could make them inoperable.
My iPod nano still connects to iTunes fine.
So I have a functioning iTunes program with nothing in the library, a functioning apple ID, and no way to sync, upgrade, or backup my iPad and phone.
BTW polydorus ... thanks for taking the time to help. It's a thankless job trying to help the frustrated.

  • My tx2 hard drive won't start!!! HELP!!!!

My laptop is a a Tx2z-1000 is 2 1/2 years old. For the last 9 months or so its had this problem when booting up. My laptop will turn on but the hard drive won't turn on with it. O can hear the fans running and the rest of the computer trying to start up but the hard drive light stays dark. My monitor stays dark or sometimes will light up and stay black. My laptop will eventually shut itself down. I would like to know how to fix this problem because I'm pretty sure it's not good for my laptop. Also, I want to note that my laptop also has an overheating problem which could be contributing to this problem, I'm not sure. Any help would be lovely. Thanks!

Bummer! But when I looked this drive up, it seems like it's a current model, so I'm assuming it's fairly new?
Unfortunately, I'm not really an expert on external drives, but I'm thinking that if the drive is relatively new, and still spins up, then it should eventually be possible to access it again. Maybe if you could clarify the circumstances of the crash a bit, it will be possible to get this sorted out. I'm not entirely clear on just what happened.
First, could you describe the crash--what exactly did the drive do? Was a cable bumped or anything like that? Or did something happen just out of the blue? And does the drive still spin up?
I am assuming that you checked the obvious things like making sure the USB port was working and the cable itself was OK. I gather that Disk Utility can see the drive, but all the options are grayed out so it can't do anything? Is your PC a different computer, not just Windows on your MBP? I gather that the PC can also see the WD drive, but can't mount it? I know nothing of PC's so I don't know any PC troubleshooting.
One thing that might be worth trying is calling Western Digital and talking to their tech support people. I believe that WD has a 3 year warranty on their drives, and I expect they would be most familiar with the drive and what the problem with it might be. For example, it might be that some component in the enclosure went south and is keeping the drive from mounting. It could be that the failure of some component in the enclosure is what caused the original crash. It might even be worth trying the drive in a different enclosure.
    Good luck!

  • Ibook won't start up. Please help

Hi, i have a ibook G4 running OS X, which will not turn on properly. When i turn it on you can hear the start up noise and the screen with the apple logo and the little loading circle comes up. But after a little while on that screen it will just turn it self off again.
I have run the apple hardware test of the instillation disc and it said everything is fine.
I have tryed resetting the PRAM, but still the same thing happens when starting up.
I have tryed resetting the PMU, but still the same thing happens when starting up.
I don't know what to do next. Any help would be great.
    Thanks.

One last question, is there any freeware that will do the same job as Disk Warrior.
It's not free, but Data Rescue II is here:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/datarescueinfo.php
The advantage is that you can download a free demo and see if you can even rescue your drive. If the demo works you can pull 5 MBs out of your down drive then pay for the full up version if you want.
If it doesn't work you don't have to waste the money and Disk Warrior is most likely not going to work any better. I've had Data Rescue II work twice in the last few months when Disk Warrior said it couldn't.
