Really, really slow PDF creation

A new development in the last couple days is that Acrobat PDF Printer and Distiller are starting to take a really long time to create PDF files.
Basic system info:
• Win 7 Home Premium
• CS4 Design Premium (w/Acrobat 9 updated to 9.3.2)
• Extensis Suitcase Fusion 2 (with auto font activation enabled)
• 4GB RAM
• 300 GB HD
Here's what I'm experiencing:
Any document printed directly to the Adobe PDF printer is taking roughly 30 minutes to create. It doesn't matter what size the file is I'm printing. For instance, I just typed out the word 'test' in three different fonts (Times New Roman, Verdana and Helvetica LT Std) and tried distilling a PostScript file through Distiller and it took 20 minutes to distill on the Standard preset and then generated the following postscript error (get the same error when printing to Adobe PDF printer):
%%[ Error: typecheck; OffendingCommand: cshow ]%%
Stack:
/T
{--pop-- --pop-- ct_str1 --exch-- 0 --exch-- --put-- ct_str1 --show--
{_ct_na _ct_i --get--} --stopped-- {--pop-- --pop--} {_ct_x _ct_y
--moveto-- 0 --rmoveto--} --ifelse-- /_ct_i _ct_i 1 --add-- --def--
--currentpoint-- /_ct_y --exch-- --def-- /_ct_x --exch-- --def--}
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
I do have a lot of fonts on my machine (not actively loaded - use Suitcase Fusion to manage): 8079 OTF, 17333 TTF and 4103 T1.
I can export to PDF just fine from InDesign. Prior to this week, I was experiencing no difficulties. I even went so far to rebuild my entire machine in event I caught some sort of bug that my virus and spyware scanners missed ... no such luck.
Right now I'm thinking it's one of two things: #1 the new Adobe 9.3.2 patch released this week is gunking something up, or #2 the number of fonts I have resident on my machine are causing Distiller to choke. I did add a bunch of new fonts earlier this week, but none are activated.
I do have Distiller set up to look at the folders the native fonts are resident, but have tried without as well with no better a result.
Looking for any ideas you may have.
Thanks in advance.

Have a look here, it may help. It addresses possible issues when printing Word 2010 documents with CS4 (no problems) and CS5 (problems).

  • IMPORTANT: FM11 & slow PDF creation - Adobe wants examples

Note from Kapil Verma, FM's senior product manager:
    Hello Framers,
Hope you are well. I noticed that some users have reported their observations with slow performance when publishing to PDF with FrameMaker 11 as compared to the previous version of FrameMaker. I wanted to let you know that we have not found such issues when doing internal testing and our customers also did not report this during the beta program.
However, we wanted to work with you to iron out any potential issues there may be. So, if you are seeing a performance slowdown on your side, we would like to test some more with your files and investigate the issue you may be facing. It will be great if you can send your sample files (along with any details on steps, your environment etc. which will help reproduce the issue) to [email protected] and cc  me ([email protected]). Thanks for your cooperation and we look forward to working with you to resolve any issues there may be.
    Thanks,
    Kapil Verma
Sr. Product Manager - FrameMaker | FrameMaker Publishing Server

Based on the number of recent complaints about PDF rendering performance, it rather looks like there might be a problem with the newer FM releases. I can't personally say, because we're still on FM7/Unix, and don't use our FM9/Win764 versions for production.
Printing to .ps and Distilling separately should help at least get your FM GUI prompt back sooner, and unless Adobe has broken it, the full Acrobat Pro product can be set to have Distiller "watch" directories for new .ps files, and generate PDFs without any user attention.
It would be interesting to know if the rendering process is multi-threaded to any significant degree. if so, having more cores in your CPU would help.
I'm also wondering if FM11 gets any benefit from installation on Win64.
And at the risk of stimulating conspiracy theories, would using Framemaker Server print any faster? I at least presume that it would free up the workstations during print.
Per-core CPU clocks hit the wall 10 years ago. Per core perf has been creeping up since then, with most of the per-chip gain in the form of more cores. Application coders, however, seem to be assuming that per-core performance is still ramping up at 2x@2yr as a side effect of Moore's Conjecture.

  • IPhoto 6 goes really, really slow

    Hi,
my iPhoto 6 is going really, really slow, and as soon as I open iPhoto 6 other open programs go slow too. First I thought it must be the size of the pics but with other Photo editing programs everything seems to go with normal speed.
Has anyone got a solution to this problem? Has anyone made similar experiences? What kind of procedures would you recommend?
Thank you very much in advance for your help!
    Kind Regards,
    Xbal

Actually, according to the System Requirements, 256mb is the bare minimum of RAM for OS X and iLife 6. I know this is true because (check my specs) I run with this, and my iPhoto library has 5,000 photos. But yes, it is slow. Switching between iPhoto and Safari takes a minute. Photoshop Elements 4 is even slower. I hope to upgrade to a gig soon, and I refuse to run the iLife and Quicktime updates before then. Anyway, the latest QT update is just too buggy.
But my point is, it does work. I have made several movies in iMovie and iDVD and even burned the DVDs. I don't see how 512mb would cause the Mac to grind to a halt.

  • Adjustment Brush really, really slow in LR 3.3

    Hi,
Don't know if anyone else has this problem, but when I use the adjustment brush with the photo in 1:1 ratio, my computer becomes really, really slow to respond.  It becomes so slow, that I have to shut down LR 3.3 and restart.  I'm using Windows 7, 64bit with 8GB of memory and my color card is an ATI HD5450 with 1GB of memory.  I have my LR3.3 Camera Raw cashe settings at 75GB and on a different internal hard drive.  I do not have this problem with LR2.7, which I'm glad I didn't remove.  Anyone having this problem and found a solution?  LR3.3 has really been a head ache for me.  Lots of small, but annoying problems.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

It is funny what we each think of as "relatively old". Three years since I purchased the PC. It works fine for everything else that I use it for but the change between LR 2 and LR 3 has been quite marked in terms of rendering speed. I would say it is far more than a doubling. If it were only a "little bit" longer I wouldn't mind but this is distinctly annoying. The images are off a 5D MKII so 21MP.
As for keywording as the first one is available that makes an assumption that this issue is at import. Indeed I keyword in bulk at import via metadata preset and typing in keywords so I don't have to touch the images at all until they are ready to review.
Yes import rendering is slow but in this case I am working in develop mode. I had just gone through and done batch white balance adjustments. At that point my practice is to re-render the images before I do fine w/b adjustments and adjustments to exposure and black point, this means that there is less delay between opening an image and it "loading" ready to work on. However the huge delay that it causes is making me re-think this and possibly suffering the "loading" delay instead.
Most of the changes for LR2 to LR3 have been good (the notable exception being slideshow which is no longer useable). This however is not a good change.

  • 1% of webpages load really really slow - tried many fixes in this forum

There are just a few sites in Safari that load really really slow. Those same sites load slow in Firefox also yet, on a Windows machine on same internet connection, those sites load super-fast, which leads me to believe that's its something in Mac's TCP/IP settings. Its been the same both pre- and post-Safari 3.1. I've tried deleting the icons folder, using OpenDNS on both Mac and router, reseting Safari, turning off IPv6. I think the sites in question use Java in minor ways so perhaps that is the problem, but millions of unproblematic sites use Java too.... Anybody have other suggestions?

You may well be right, but there are sites out there that still linger in Internet Explorer-Land, or have not been updated to comply with the stricter standards of Safari.

  • Launchpad really really slow

Today i just noticed that on my iMac launchpad is really really slow, like it's animations are messed up, looks like i get screen tearing too.
This is on a mid 2011 iMac with 4GB ram and amd 512mb graphics.
Any idea why? I googled it and it seems to be a known problem with no solution?!

    I HAVE THE PROBLEM TO!
I have contacted Apple Support by phone - But they didnt seem to be able to help me!
It begain resently, but for me Launch pad close to crashes when I am trying to open it. Takes me about 5 minutes, before it loads- And when it does, I cant use it anyway.
While it is loading, I cant do anything. And it looks like in the old days, when we didnt have ADSL but a really really crappy contection. Remember? When all images was "scanned" in.. The same here... It kinda Scan's the ikons.
Its the same with my Top Sites in Safari.. Only, that doesnt stop again. Not until I have succes with actually closing Safari. (Takes a long time to!)
Also, I suddently cant watch any videos online. Yesterday I could!
I dont remember having updatet og installed anything since before yesterday.
    I have reinstalled Flashplayer.
    I have reinstalled Mountain lion.
I have repaired disk and disk permisions.
    I have deletet 10 3rd party programs.
I have plenty of disk space.
Its the same problem with all browsers.
The only very poor solution I could find regarding the L P problem, was to lower the soloution to 800x600. Was a litle litle bit better. But after setting it back to normal, it was the same crap!
    Help?

  • Ever since i upgraded to mountain lion, my macbook pro is really really slow

ever since i upgraded to mountain lion, my macbook pro (17" 2010 intel i7 4GB ram) is really really slow, specially at start up and shut down. any solution?
my hard drive is has about 200 GB free space, and i do regular varification for my drive. i almost regret upgrading to mountain lion :-(

Depending on the software you use (and how many programs you use at once) you may need to add more RAM. Shutdown with 10.8.2 is noticably longer than Lion's shutdown (and even slower than the original release of 10.8). I suggest you reboot your computer and immediately launch Activity Monitor. You want to watch two things: 1) RAM - as you use the computer over the next couple of hours after the reboot are you seeing the Page Out number increasing pretty quickly? That would be an indication that your computer is quickly using up RAM and pushing software and data into Virtual Memory to make room. This could account for the slow computer. 2) CPU - unless you are running some heavy duty software, your CPU usage may spike close to 80-90% for a few seconds but mostly hover in the 20-40% range. If it is higher than that, or if you see a single process using more than 70% constantly you may have a rogue process that is dragging the computer down.

  • PDF creation from ID - not outlining fonts correctly

Hi all. I have a query regarding PDF creation from InDesign (so this could have been in the Acrobat section instead but went for this one).
I work for a publisher using CS2+3 on PCs. We don't have one out of house printer as a rule but several. All have different requirements.
Essentially we are converting fonts to curves from within InDesign when creating the PDFs. Therefore we have multiple files (curved and text) which is adding lots of time onto projects and adding a further margin for error with missing or out of date files. It seems this process is necessary as whenever I select the option to outline the fonts when creating the PDFs, the printers usually get in touch asking for the font, even though it has been outlined.
I am hoping to find any simple solution, hopefully avoiding purchasing extra software, that avoids creating duplicate 'curved' files. I realise it's a big topic and not restricted to InDesign but this is the main software we are using so figured this was the place for it. Many thanks.

I'll let others question the necessity of outlining text. It has been discussed many, many times before, and the only valid reasons I found so far are producing files for hopelessly outdated printers (the usual recommendation is "find another one, fast!") and for legacy custom hardware such as cutters and engravers.
But this is really a mystery to me:
It seems this process is necessary as whenever I select the option to outline the fonts when creating the PDFs, the printers usually get in touch asking for the font, even though it has been outlined.
Tr this: outline all text in your ID document. Export as PDF. Check under Document Properties, Fonts. How many fonts do you see? If everything is outlined, there shouldn't be any.
How does the printer know what fonts to ask for, and what is he ever gonna do with these fonts?

  • Repetitive PDF creation issue in PREVIEW (Terminal option to not save?)

i have a real annoying issue in Preview which i generally find to be a model of efficiency. it is for pdf creation and goes like this:
i scan 50 images into Preview in order to create a pdf to send to someone.
i rotate them and make sure they are properly ordered and oriented.
i select them all and go to print pulldown menu item
then i select the pdf button at the bottom lower left (this is redundant and would be really nice to eliminate by providing a PRINT TO PDF pulldown)
anyway, then i create the pdf and i try to CLOSE OUT of Preview.
however - since i don't need the images any more i am not MANUALLY SAVING ALL THESE IMAGES by CLICKING SAVE on each of the 50 images (this is a pain too and would really be nice to fix)
/instead/ what i have to do is to click DELETE on all 50 images in order to simply close out of Preview after having saved my PDF.
is there a better way to do this and if so what is it.
also, why isn't preview smart enough to not act like adobe software and to give me a "Don't Save All" or "Delete All" button instead of giving me carpal tunnel confirming this on each image.
is there a Yes <> No switch in Terminal that will turn this off??

You can open the PDF in Acrobat and save to Acrobat 4 compatibility, either through optimize or preflight. I would also ask the client why they want Acrobat 4 compatibility.

  • White Noise showing up in images after PDF Creation

I am currently running into an issue making PDFs from InDesign CS4. Lately, our company has been getting some rather large jobs in to print and that's when this all started.
The current job is 190 pages plus cover that will be perfect bound. The client, nor I can make one large PDF from this job so we have to break it up into sections. Usually each of the PDF sections has around 20-50 pages per.
Now the issue we're running into is that on some of the pages, an image will end up with a bar or lines in it that looks like white noise. Like the image information was lost for a short period of time during the PDF creation from InDesign.
Here are two pictures of pages from separate jobs and a close up on what's going on. **Second image was from a 32 page plus cover document we have already printed.
Now in order for me to fix this issue is to just make a single page PDF of the effected pages in the document. I just wish I knew what was causing this issue so I know how to avoid it in the future. So far four jobs have been affected like this; two 32 page + cover jobs, a 64 page + cover job, and is job.
We use a Rampage Workflow system here. My PDF settings in InDesign CS4 has all compression turned off, no profiles or color conversion turned on. I keep compression turned off because it seems sometimes, vector art done in Illustrator does not seem to come out looking well when RIP'd in Rampage.
My main computer is a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 4 BG of memory running Mac OS X 10.5.8.
My current version of InDesign CS4 is 6.0.3.  If anyone has run into this problem or if anyone has any helpful hints for me, I could really use them please. If you need more information from me, I'll be happy to answer any questions.
    Thanks for all the help!
    Roc

That one has come up every now and then and has always been hardware as far as I know....  bad ram, bad cable, bad drive, bad network maybe even bad video card (?).
I see that the lines in the rotated pic are parallel with that pic, so maybe look at the machine where that pic was made and placed first, this is not definite, but you can get corruption in tiffs on machines with hardware errors and they may not be visible every time you open the file.
Although probably a bigger clue is the fact that doing singles is working better, that would make me change the ram completely, suspecting a bad module.  Also, unplug peripheral devices and see if that has any bearing.

  • InCopy is best for PDF creation...what do you think?

I use Apple pages 09 export to create PDF documents with Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 (mac).  I use these with my clients, and since I am a communicaitons consultant, I want them to stand out.  I have found pages does not do the entire job...I must add things to the PDF in acrobat (such as flash) and pages has bugs (links don't show up in left column of links in adober reader).  So, I am becoming disolutioned with pages to pdf.
I am very technically oriented and an expert computer user, so I have been thinking about moving to a more roubust word processor to make PDF documents.  I understand Adobe has such word processor (InCopy I think).  I will reserach it, but I am looking for advice from users.  What is the best way to go?
Does InCopy allow everything to be done in InCopy (and not a 2 stage process of adding things in acrobat).  Are there alternatives to InCopy that I might look at?  Is there anything better for PDF creation?  Print is not a big issue for me, just PDF/electronic documents.
    thanks
    bob

InCopy doesn't do what you want. InCopy is designed for to create content that will eventually be placed into ID. I could be wrong, but I'd ask in the Incopy forum, not here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/incopy/incopy_general
To some extent I think you would be better off with InDesign. It is not really a WP, but you can use Pages, TextEdit, Nisus, Mellel or any other WP as a Word Processor and then just place the content into InDesign. Can you use InCopy to place the content into InDesign, sure, but I really think of InCopy as an integrated workflow product for group content creation.

My iPad has to be really really close to the router for it to have internet. How can I make it so I can go around the house with it? My iPad has been like this for a couple of months, and it has really irritated me. My friend came over and he had to download iTunes for something on the computer. He needed my iPad, he tried it and it wasn't really near the router.

I'd begin by reviewing the following:
