Recapturing HD Project

I've just completed an HD project in FCE 4 (two and a half hour play with total capture file size of over 150GB) in the HDV-AIC 1080i60 format. I've archived the project file and was ready to delete the media files when I ran across Apple Support Article 304963 which states that the Capture Project feature is not available if you're working in a project that uses the HDV-AIC setting. If you can't recapture your HD project files, is there any value in archiving the project file? Does the archived project file still have value if you manually recapture all of your video?
Second, let's assume I was working with regular DV files. When I originally captured the files before editing, to conserve hard drive space I only captured six individual clips from one tape and not the entire tape. If I were to recapture this project, does the FCE project file know only to recapture those six files or would it recapture the whole tape?
Finally, this last question may be a little hard to articulate but here goes. I've noticed that the time shown for certain clips located in the browser appears to be the length of that clip as it runs in a particular sequence but if you open that clip in the viewer and clear the in and out points, the time in the browser changes to the entire length of the clip, not the length of the portion you've used in the sequence. Once you've edited the desired length of the clip into the time line, does clearing the in and out points in the viewer have any impact on the final edited sequence? What I'm trying to determine is there is anything special I need to do to the clips in the browser before archiving to make sure I can properly recapture the entire project?

The project file might some value if you have to recapture manually. It will give you a good guide to what you were doing, especially you logged your material and named the clips. It might help.
You might be able to trick FCE into just capturing the six clips, but normally it will want to capture all the material.
You can't clear the In and Out of a clip in the timeline. By definition it must have I/O. You don't need to do anything specially to the clips in the browser for project capture.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
If your project is composed of DV material, just recapture your project with original tape(s).

  • Recapturing ****!

This is the same problem I started in another thread but here's a more detailed explanation.
The problem I've had stemmed from a RAID unit apparently going south (despite the fact that these things are supposed to protect you from this kind of thing!!!). Anyway I had to decide whether to press on with resurrecting the drive and copying the media off it or biting the bullet and recapturing my project - it seemed that recapturing was the way to go. There's so much media that I've got three machines recapturing and am dearly hoping that I'll be able to rebuild an entire project from all this once the media's all back on-line. I had the clips digitized on a 1 reel per bin basis (ie Bin 1 contains reel 1 only) - some of these clips are subclipped. On recapturing some of these bins (and it does seem to be ones with subclips - but I don't know whether that's related) FC only captures the video and I get this message :
"The clip 'x' was unable to be reconnected to the newly captured media, due to a mismatch in the media present in the file and the media required by the clip. Try recapturing using logged clip settings to resolve the problem."
I have to try digitizing them again and it comes up with a warning that there are duplicate filenames and I need to rename them - this I do by adding a letter at the end of the name then pressing continue. It then digitizes the clip twice but does manage to reconnect.
Any idea what's going on here and how I can stop it. And what on earth's going to happen when I try to put all this lot back together!!!
While at the moment I've got three identical projects I'm planning to save as and give them unique names in case I have to move bins from the specific project that the media was redigitzed to. If this happens I've no idea what will happen to my sequences which of course look for clips from across all of these bins.
I'm capturing with "use logged clip settings" checked.

  • Capturing multiple clips from one mini dv tape

i have been having trouble using the 'capture project' option. i can capture individual clips, but would like to set them all before hand and have the computer go through and capture them all at once. this seems to be possible, but when i click 'capture project' it either only captures the first clip or reads 'error'. any suggestions?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You cannot capture project with this method in FCE, it's not suported.
See page 179 and 181 of user's manual.
You can capture now all your tape (or portion with the esc key), and recapture a project (from a previously captured but now erased media). See page 189.
Each clip that is logged in capture window is captured right after you set the in and out points. One clip at a time.
Final Cut Pro can meets your needs.
If your problem is to recapture a project, it seems that there is a time code break on your DV tape, thus the error.
Note that HDV cannot be recaptured.

  • Media Manager: What features do work?  What doesn't?

    Hi,
For those people for whom the media manager works, what works? What doesn't? What version of FCP and MacOS are you using?
I've just spent the last several hours trying to reconnect clips by hand after FCP 5.0.4 crashed while using the Media Manager to consolidate Media Files into one folder (from the manual volume 4 pg 104-105) for archiving. I am beginning to despair. Luckily I've done this after writing out what should be the final version of my project to DVD, so if I can't succeed, as long as I don't need to edit anything I should be ok.
I can tell you what's not working for me: the workflow of capture-now an entire miniDV tape to disk. I've tried many different approaches, and everything seems broken. I am using Mac OS X 10.3.9 and FCP 5.0.4.
Specifically the aspects of Media Manager which are broken for me:
    1) (page 103) Removing Portions of Media Files after creating subclips. "A common logging and capturing workflow involves capturing each tape to a single media file, breaking the master clip into subclips, and then using the Media Manager to create individual media files for each subclip."
That is just plain broken. Even when I delete the master file as recommended, it does not break up the media file into individual files for the subclips. I've seen that problem referenced here before. Creating subclips from the subclips and removing subclip limits gives me the entire 1 hr tape again, when all I want is the smaller portion which does not cross DV start/stop boundaries.
Talking with a creative helper at the Palo Alto Apple store I learned that if you don't delete any media between clips, it doesn't make a file break. I have not tested that, instead I used the alternate workflow he proposed of selecting my subclips (created from the markers made with DV start/stop detect) ctrl-click -> batch export, item settings: make movie self contained. Unfortunately, I discovered the hard way that that workflow introduces errors in the time code, making recapturing the project to reconstruct it impossible.
    2) Consolidating Media Files into one folder (pg 104-105) - This is also broken and caused FCP to quit unexpectedly. Both the source and destination disk had enough disk space to hold two or more copies of the entire project. What's worse, although I've been able to reconnect most of the clips created using the batch export process menioned above, some of them complain that they need the complete 1-hr clip to play properly. Those clips were deleted weeks ago, and I was able to edit and work on the project successfully without them. Why are they needed now? The small clips do appear on disk, I can see them but they won't play without the long file.
Nothing I've tried with the media manager has worked. Has anything worked for you? I'm especially interested if you use the "capture now" feature to capture 1-hr tapes and log later.
    Thanks,

I use MM all the time, but only for certain things. I can share some observations:
If you are using MM to "Create Offline - Remove Unused", the original media all needs to be present in order for the unused media to be removed from the offline clips MM creates. This is they way I use MM all the time - capturing long clips at RT or DV quality, and then removing unused media with MM, recapturing at high quality.
I might try to use MM to copy media used in a certain sequence, but I would never try to move the media in a way that would automatically remove or alter any of my already captured media. If FCP crashed in the middle of the operation (perhaps it hits a file with incorrect permissions) your media will be half-moved, and some of the media might get corrupted. I have reassembled a few projects like this for friends and it was not easy.
Speed adjusted clips - I still see TC issues every now and then when using MM on speed-adjusted clips - here is my workaround: I go through my edited sequence and pick out as many of the speed-adjusted clips as I can find, copying and pasting them into a new sequence, where I remove the speed adjustments. I include this new sequence in my selection when I initiate MM, this creates new master clips for the speed-adjusted material that are guaranteed to come up with the correct in and out points. If during my re-assembly I find that and of these clips have a problem, I know there will be enough media in the master clip to replace the speed-adjusted media without having to log and capture a new clip.
One major bug in MM I have found with FCP5 is that when using MM to convert a DV sequence to an Uncompressed offline sequence, any graphics or animation movie files (animation codec) can no longer be rendered at full quality without replacing them one by one. My last project had 70 of these files in a 1-hour program.

  • FCP not responding when Exporting

I have now been trying to export a large project 2:10 Min from FCS3 I have tried for 2 weeks now and it still freezes or stops responding. I have trashed the preferences multiple times, now trashed the render files and re-rendered the file. There is no way to recapture this project or redo any of the footage. I used the old HDV tapes and now sold the camera to upgrade to DSLR. I am in need of some help ASAP.. I have tried exporting through compressor, through final cut, I have tried every way possible. And after it freezes it wont reopen unless I shut down and restart.
I have 2.8 GHz Intel I5 8GB RAM -- all updates current.. thx

Have you tried exporting the sequence without conversion? (File > Export > Quicktime Movie . . . )
Is there sufficient disk space on the target disk?
Is the destination disk formatted Mac OS Extended?
Have you tried exporting your sequence in sections, by setting in and out points on the sequence? (This will help isolate if just one section is the problem. You can join these sections together in Quicktime Pro, if the movie exports correctly in smaller sections.)
Have you used Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions on the target disk?
Have you made a backup copy of your work in case something is wrong with your disk?

  • Is there any reason I shouldn't work this way?

Given the lack of batch capture in FCE is there any reason why I shouldn't work in the following way:
    1. Import video in large chunks using capture now
    2. Use DV start stop and Make sub-clip
    3. Export just the sub-clips I want as self-contained movies
    4. Close the project and delete the original capture files and the FCE project file
    5. Start a new project and import the movies I saved in step 3.
My reasons for wanting to do this are mainly to save disc space but also to reduce clutter in the bins. So far as I can see this works fine. The only downsides I can see are:
    1. The extra time it takes but this is offset against the chore of capturing individual clips instead of using capture now.
    2. The fact that reimported clips have their audio tracks set to mono mix but it seems easy enough to correct this. (As an aside, if I import a .mov file saved from Quicktime it imports into FCE with the audio set to stereo - why the difference?).
I'd be happy enough working this way, I think, provided I could be confident that I'm not going to lose quality by saving and then re-importing. Will I? Are there any other downsides I've not thought of?

You shouldn't lose any quality in the audio or video, but you may lose the timecode track. I'm not sure if you'll lose it, but if you do, you won't be able to recapture the project clips from the original tape because the timecode would be required. This isn't an issue, if you don't ever need to recapture. The timecode may even be retained... I'd have to do an export to see. As a matter of workflow, you may want to think seriously about keeping the timecode, because you can back-up your project file and have some assurance that you can recover from a chatastrophic failure simply by restoring the project file and recapturing from the original tape.
Regarding your audio and video; unless you were to add effects to the video, there should be no loss in exporting and importing. Losses in DV are incurred when you add filters (alter the image) and recompress. The audio is uncompressed PCM, so no losses to be had there, unless you change the sampling rate.

  • Problems with saving video clips

Ok here is what I'm looking to do. I'm working on a project containin over 15 hours of raw video spread. Can I capture one full hour of video, go into FCE and pick the individual clips from that one hour that I want, and delete the other unused video without messing with the clips I saved? If so, how do you go about doing this.

Whatever you capture, FCE saves. In other words, if you capture an hour of video and only use 10 minutes in your Timeline, FCE still wants to reference that entire hour. Delete the rest of the video and you will loose the reference and the project will not work.
You can always use Capture Clip to set In and Out points in your raw video, thusly capturing just what you need. FCE does not have batch capture, so you will have to capture one clip at a time but this will save you space.
Be sure to properly log your tapes (Reel 1, Reel 2, etc) in case you need to recapture the project later on
There are alternatives: You can capture one tape at a time, go in, "cut out" the clips you want, saving them to a new Sequence. When you have the clips you want, you can export that Sequence as a self-contained Quicktime movie then ditch the original tape. However, I think Capturing Clip is the more desired approach

  • Batch Capture Problems

I want to recapture a project, edited in SD as a HD project. Therefore I offlined all clips and recapture them in HD-Format. But the in and out of the clip was noct correct. Trying to use a exported batchlist in csv-Format I recognized that In and Out-Points of all clips differ from one to several frames. How can I batch capture material with correct timecode or export a correct batch capture list????
Thank you for instant help, because I have to finish HD editing on Monday
    Jörg

No it's several clips on the tape. It captures 2 frames of each and then moves on to the next. Never actually heard of Rescue before but I shall check it out.One thing I have just noticed is that all the offline clips logged and ready to be captured don't have any compressor details, Vid rate or data rate details. That has to have something to do with it but I don't know what?
    Thanks.

  • Best Way to Capture

I been using FCP for a while. I am PC Vegas convert. I started editing vido on iMovie. I liked the fact that iMovie and even Vegas makes individual clip when capturing and it detects when camara starts and stops. If there a setting on FCP capture like that.
Also in iMovie each clip has a time stamp. it tells the duration time date etc. I had project where we used 2 cameras. But I can't figure out how to sync these footage My assumption was if there was time stamp on the capture clip it will be so easy to do that.
Also, I am getting message saing that the audio bit rate is differen then what is on the tape. It plays ok but it bothers me.
    thanks all..

As stated above, you have to forget imovie.
FCP performs non-destructive editing, like other professional nle's. Basically that means when you capture a clip, there it is, and there it stays. you can use the same clip over and over in a sequence, using different portions, slice and dice any way you like, the captured media remains the same. Anfcp sequence is really only a set of instructions as to how to play back portions of the media, with a GUI.
What's the point of logging? If you have to ask, I almost despair at giving you an answer.
Logging your media is a part of the editorial process. Should you ever have to recapture a project at a later date, it's simply a matter of feeding tapes to fcp when it asks for them.
A logged clip is a joy forever. When you "capture now" you risk the inability to ever recapture the same way twice, making all your previous work worthless.
There are plenty of other reasons, but this is wearying and unpleasant to type. Unrewarding.

  • Using Project files to recapture media?

I have lots of video that I captured using capture now. If anything were to ever happen to the media captured, can the project file somehow be used to recapture the exact segment of video I originally had without having to go through the whole process all over again?
What about if the project file includes edits and I somehow lose the media. If it is recaptured, will the edits in the project file apply to the recaptured video?
    Thanks.

Pre roll is adding time to the head and tail of each clip, also called 'handles' so you have some room to change edit points, add transitions, recapture media etc. in the future. Pre roll is a FCP setup item prior to capture.
That's not quite right, Don. Pre-roll and handles are completely un-related. Handles are what you are describing in your post. Pre-roll is a recognition of playback ballistics in that a deck needs to cue to a point prior to the in-point on the tape to be captured. This is because the tape needs time to come up to speed and stabilize before you begin capture.
The amount of pre-roll required varies with the deck. I believe DV decks are often set at 6 seconds. Digibeta is lower, at 3 seconds.
As to why Capture now is generally a bad practice (or at least a sloppy one that can cause trouble) - By logging prior to capture, you can name your clips, and the quicktime media generated will have the same name. This is a LOT better that having a bunch of clips labeled untitled-1, untitled-2, etc littering your hard drive - especially if you run into the need to re-link your media.
Also, historically, there were drawbacks to using capture now - one of which was that FCP tried to allocate your entire hard drive. Revisions 5 and later deal with this more gracefully.
You also keep from filling your hard drive by FCP informing you if what you want to capture will actually fit on your scratch disk.
Finally, that little pre-roll thing mentioned above can thwart your attempts to recapture your media at a later date... (or certainlly complicate them).

  • Existing DV project (from HDV tapes) need to recapture HDV and master OUT

    here is one nightmare..
Is there a way to recapture existing DV project (FCP 5.1.4) to HDV ?
the tapes are HDV - but SOMEONE did not switched the HDV to DV convertor OFF on our deck..
we need to deliver the master to client..
    thanX for your help

    j3h,
This could very well be a nightmare if you didn't capture planning to do an online/offline workflow. We do not do this so I am no expert but I can help you search for the right answers. You want to online your DV project. I think that Media Manager can help with this. I caution you, if you did not Log and Capture (ie. you used "Capture Now") then you are in for a large headache. If you used log and capture then you should be able to recapture your media and have media manager replace your DV clips with HDV clips.

  • Use recaptured footage in an old project, how?

    Hi everyone,
I am in a it of a weird situation. Years ago, I filmed and edited some silly stuff with my friends, using Premiere Pro 1.5 and a Digital 8 camera. I would really like to edit that project again, and I have since lost the footage from my computer, but kept the Premiere project which I have managed to find again. Since I have to recapture the footage from the tapes onto my computer, I was wondering if there was some smart way of putting the recaptured footage into the project in the correct places.
I tried using "Link Media", which seemed to work somewhat, but since I think the length of the avi file is longer or something, the whole thing is off cue.
Is there some easy way to align the footage so it matches correctly again?
    Kind Regards,
    Gustav Lassen

I tried this a while back and re captured the footage from the same tape making it roughly the same position, length and the same filename of course. I was hoping that PP would match the timecodes and sync it all in - but alas no. It was all displaced and PP seemed to have applied a new timecode to the re-imported footage. I gave up so would also be interested in Jim's expansion

  • Projects were captured as SD from HDV: Can I somehow recapture to HDV???

I once had an old dual, pre-intel G5 that couldn't edit HDV. Now I have an 8core beast and need to go back and find a way to keep the same edits of my SD source footage (shot in HDV but downconverted in camera and captured as SD).
Experts, I'm looking for advice for the easiest, most automated way of recreating my exact sequence in HDV that was once SD. I've heard media manager somehow is the idea to get around this. Also, Apple care told me to look into "replace edits". Does anyone have a suggestion for the best way to go about doing this? I appreciate your input greatly. Thanks in advance.
    -Mike

I'm guessing there has to be a way to retain the actual editing decisions.
There is. You aren't paying attention. You select your sequence. Then you choose MEDIA MANAGER and choose the MAKE OFFLINE option. And in that interface, you choose the codec you want to capture as...and how much handles you want. Go to the manual for the step by step process. This is how the offline/online workflow is done.
SO IF somehow I can recapture and keep the same exact time code, there theoretically shouldn't be a problem (You would think!)
Exactly. So follow the proper procedures on how to do that and all will be good.
I don't think the process is best addressed by litterally dragging the new re-captured HDV footage into the old SD timeline seq.
It isn't. No one told you to do that.

  • I can´t open FC project ( it is related to my previous post: File error: Access denied when trying to export).

1- Are you using material with an avid codec?
No, I did not use material with avid codec but I wanted to export to a .avi video.
2- What exactly are your clip settings and your sequence settings?
    Cilp setting are HDV-1080i50
The secuence is as well HDV-1080i50
3- What do you mean by "mac block?"
Sorry for the word, what I mean is that My Mac collapsed. I was trying to export a video
    I was trying to export:
    I could not:
The destiny specificated does not allow access for read/write
Check if the folder is just a read folder or check your writing permission.
So I tried to change permissions of the Hard Disk with OS, then, one after another some windows appeared, here first of them, and a detail:
The system extension can´t be used
The system extension "/System/Library/ Extensions/ACard671xSCSI.kext" was not well instaled, the it can be used. Try to reinstal it or contact manofacturer to obtain a update.
    Acept
(NOTE: there were a lot of more windows related to differents extensions, some are: "Sustem/Library/Extensions/Apple BMC.Kext"; "(...)Apple EFI Runtime.kext" , "(...) AppleEFIRuntime.Kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleEFINVRAM-kext", etc. I have almost all captured, in case you need more details I can upload the as well).
Then, I turn off the computer (because it stop working with all those pop ups windows) and next time I tried to turn it on, it never restart again ( it turn in but never start the OS), therefore I restarted from the DVD.
4- What did you do when you restarted your mac from the dvd os?
I just installed over the OS ( advised by a mac technitian), since then...
when I start my mac some windows pop up:
    The first window says:
One low safe start item was desactivated
"/Library/StartupItems/DigidesignLoader" was not runnig because it has not the security protocol adjusted.
    Acept
The others are the same with: "StartupItems/PACESupport" ,with "StartupItems/Qmaster" and with "StartupItems/SATARaid5Daemon"
And when I try to open FC fileproject a window show up:
Final Cut close unexpectedly while AvidV1xCodec was being used.
I have tried ignore it and restart it a nothing works.
AND THIS IS PRECISELY THE PROBLEM!!
5- Does the mac see the external hard disk?
Did you try and repair the external drive?
What format is the external drive?
I have the external disk in technical service, they will try to repair it. It was in MacPlus (registrered) format, configured in Raid 0 ( two hard disk enclosed together and working as one). Now, to recaptured the tapes for the project I have purchase another hard disk ( 1 T and configured it with MacPlus (registrered) format), this new hard disk is well detected by my computer.
    My version of OS is
Well, that all I can tell about what happen to me.
Now, as I have said, I can´t  open the FC Project.
I have tried to clean the user profile of FC and it doesn´t work either... need some advise..., thanks for your help!!
