Recognizing other computer on the network

I have an iMac (G3, 400 mHz) running 9.2.2 networked to an iBook G4 running 10.4.7. They are connected via a linksys wireless router: the iMac connection is by ethernet, the iBook usually by wireless, but sometimes I plug in an ethernet cable.
I followed the instructions in the Missing Manual for Tiger. They share an internet connection with no problem, and the iBook can find the iMac and I can move files back and forth if I'm at the iBook. But if I'm sitting at the iMac, I can't find the iBook. It doesn't show up either in the chooser or in the network browser. I've tried entering the iBook network name in the network browser, but the iMac tells me it can't find that address.
Any ideas?

Hi, Kabing -
Two main ways to create an alias to an item -
• Select the item by clicking on it once, then press Command-M (Make Alias from the File menu. An alias will appear next to the original; that alias can then be placed wherever you wish.
• Hold down the Command and Option keys, then drag the item to where you want the alias to be (onto the desktop or into another folder, for example) - instead of moving or copying the original, an alias to it will be created at the destination. One advantage of this method is that, as long as the destination is not the same folder as the original, the name for the alias stays the same as the original (that is, without "alias" being appended to it).
Yet another way, though less convenient - select the item by clicking once on it, then press Command-T (Add To Favorites in the File menu). An alias to the item will be added to the Favorites folder in System Folder.
This item is then selectable by going to Favorites in the Apple menu and selecting it from the Favorites submenu.
You can also relocate that alias to wherever you wish, by moving it or copying it.
Note that the Favorites submenu can be made into a well-organized tool by adding appropriately-named (according to your logic) folders in the Favorites folder in System Folder, and sorting the Favorites aliases into those folders.
If by chance the reason that making an alias is that the keyboard command(s) do not work when in Finder, and the items are not shown in the File menu, open Finder's Preferences (bottom of Edit menu), and on the General page uncheck the first item, Simple Finder. If that was checked, the change will occur immediately upon unchecking it (no restart needed).

  • Not reading other computer in the network

Usually when I am in the same wireless network as other users, it picks up other users using the network. It is not picking up my friends macbook, but his computer is picking up my macbook. Why is this happening. I also tried to hook it up via firewire and it still wouldnt find it. What is going on with this. Sometimes it will recognize other users and sometimes it wont.

Our household has a wireless network with internet, and I have had the same problem with networking. I have tried to find the network and have no luck with Leopard.
My husband has Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 2) running on his computer and I have tried to network to his countless amounts of times. With no luck. Sometimes the network would pop up, but rarely, most times there would be no network at all. I eventually reformatted back to Mac OS Tiger.
Now I have no problems with the networking. I probably wont go back to Leopard until the bring a few updates and get rid of the bugs I have found in Leopard.

  • How do you properly set up a home network with multiple devices?  I have a macbook pro, an iMac, and several other phones, tablets, roku devices, etc.  Everything works properly except for when I try to access the other computer through the network.

I have an iMac and a macbook pro that I used to be able to share files between but ever since I moved 3 months ago I can't get it to work.  Also, now my phone and my wife's phone are inseparably connected.  She seems to be getting all of my text messages but I don't get hers.  We also bought new computers right before we moved so that might have something to do with it.  Both computers are on my account and have my name.  Thanks in advance, it would be nice to get this working again - tired of walking ten feet with a flash drive to share files  : )

  • Missing computer on the network

I have 7 machines each running Windows XP, a wireless access point, and a BEFSR41 router.  All of the computers connect wirelessly.  I have one computer that can see all the other computers when I view the workgroup except the one computer.  Even if I view the workgroup on that computer it doesn't itself in the workgroup.  This computer connects to the internet fine.  I can see the shared folders on the other computers.  No one can see this computer.  All of the computers are configured the same.  Same settings in the DHCP, but I can't see it.  This may also be a symptom of something else but one of the computers says it is having an ip conflict with another computer.  All ip addresses are dynamically assigned.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Restart all computer one after another .....
Disable firewall & antivirus software on the computer which is not listed in the workgroup.....
Try to ping different computers & also try to ping the Ip address of this computer from other computer in the network.........

  • We have a PC with iTunes that needs the hard drive reformatted. Right now, it can't connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my music to a thumb drive, then re-load when the computer is reformatted?

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting?  How do I do it?

Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.

  • How do I share a folder on mac mini with other macs in the network?

    Howdy all!
The scenario I have in mind is that I have one folder in our Mac Mini (used as Home Theater) with all the family's music files on it. The rest of the family would be able to access the folder and copy the music they prefer onto their own computers (iMacs and Macbooks). The other computers would have read only access, they would not be able to alter the contents of the original file (to prevent accidental deletion). Only the user of the Mini Home Theater could alter the contents of said file.
I have tried pulling up the "Get Info" window and clicking the "Shared Folder" and "Locked" boxes, but all this seems to do is make the user of the Mac Mini unable to alter the contents of the folder. All the other macs on the network can access and alter the folder contents no problem.
    What am I missing?
Thank you for any advice you can give!

This isn't quite what I was looking for. I don't want to share the folder with users on the same computer--I want to share the folder with users on other computers.
Unless there is some way to identify users on other computers. How can I do that?

I just installed Airport Extreme. It works as a wireless network on my Macbook. It won't connect with my Windows Visa PC. Message reads: "settings saved on this computer for the network don't match requirements of the network." I seem to need to enter a security key/passphrase to connect to the PC. Where do I find them?
    Thanks for your help.

I assume that you have Wireless Security enabled on your AirPort's wireless network. The issue maybe that the PC is unable to use the WPA password itself and will require using the Equivalent Network Password instead.
To get this password, you will use the AirPort Utility from the MacBook:
Start the AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort base station > Manual Setup
Now, before doing anything else, go up to the utility's menu bar at the top of the screen, and then, choose "Base Station," and then, Equivalent Network Password from the drop-down menu. You will see two items: 1) WPA Password, which should look familiar to you, and 2) WPA Pre-Shared Key. It should be a long hexidecimal set of numbers and letters. Jot down this second item.
You will want to use the value you just jotted down when entering the password from the Windows Visa PC.

  • Is there a way to send PP renders to another computer on the network?

Is there a way I can send renders out of Premiere Pro CS6 to another computer on the network that has Adobe Media Encoder CS6 installed?

You'd have to have PP installed on the other computer as well, and copy all the media and other assets over to that computer, along with the PP project file, and then start PP on that second computer and send to AME from there.
    In short, no.

  • My G5 can't locate other computers on the network

It's weird it can find the internet and networked printers but NO other computers at all. Furthermore other computers on the network have no problem finding each other or this specific computer.
    Any ideas?
There are both macs, windows, and a linux based NAS on this network.

It most certainly does explain why one wouldn't be able to see others, if it's not configured as part of a workgroup or the automounter isn't running, this single machine will not be able to mount on demand, those shares which are advertised on other hosts.
Macs are not complicated and as I see by your signon, you know something of a root account. I would think you'd feel right at home on a mac under it's covers I myself have been a real Unix sysadmin for 18 years and played on all types of enterprise hardware, believe me, Macs are easy to fiddle with. Most of the time, when someone can't see other machines using the network browser,it's because some tool disabled NFS. Check your /etc/hostconfig for the automounter line and also check in the /Library/StartupItems and make sure NFS gets hit when the box starts.
I know if I kill my automounter, all the network mounting stops.

  • Can't mount another computer on the network, or print, but can see all

When I attempt to connect to another computer on the ethernet network in the office, I can see lots of other computers on the network but I can't quite get there. This is only a recent problem that began a week or so ago and there were no problems earlier.
I can make it through Network >> Local >> Select the computer I wish to connect to >> Enter the password >> Select the volumes I wish to mount >> but then that's it, I get the spinning beach ball and nothing more happens. I don't understand how I can be seeing the volume and yet unable to mount it.
However, at the same time I can also see the printers on the network and am unable to print to them which indicates that there may be a related problem. No-one else on the network is having any issues connecting to other computers or printers.

I have the same problem - printers, volumes, computers - I have to relaunch the finder as soon as try to connect as a guest or registered user

    Hello lucky3480;
I don't know what else to do. I'm thinking of possibly returning the unit and purchasing a wireless internet card to install in the tower. Any help you can provide would be great. Even suggesting a good wireless card at this point
Well it looks like you're not having any luck at all with this AX set up but please don't give on it just yet, it's a good choice for extending your Network. Your on the right path, just going backwards and in the wrong direction. You'll learn a lot about stuff this way but may lead to other issues.
Before I continue, let me know if you have returned the AX or still need help. Here's a link to Apple's PDF about [Designing AirPort Networks|http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Designing_AirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf] Click on it to open in Safari but then save it to your desktop. Now open it from your desktop and start reading Chapter 3, page 42.

  • How to restrict users working on Windows 7 clients from accessing Windows Explorer and other systems in the network through Group Policy with a domain controller running on Windows Server 2008 r2

    Dear All,
We are having an infrastructure setup of around 500 client computers managed through group policy.
Recently the domain controllers have been migrated from Windows Server 2003 to Server 2008 R2.
Since this account requires extremely strict environment, we need to figure the solution for restricting the users from access anything locally.
It would be great if you can assist me with the following query.
How to restrict users logged on Windows 7 clients from accessing Windows Explorer and browsing other systems in the network through Group Policy with a domain controller running on Windows Server 2008 r2 ?
Can we disable Network Tab on the left hand pane ?
explorer.exe is blocked already, but users are able to enter the Windows Explorer by clicking on the name which is visible on the Start Menu.

You cannot block explorer.exe when you do not replace the shell - the
desktop you see effectively IS explorer.exe...
Your requirement sounds like you need a custom shell:

  • Connecting to other computers on the network

I just replaced an older Belkin wireless router with the new Airport extreme. I like it very much but I cannot now figure out how to connect to other computers on the network. With the old router I just clicked on network in the finder window and all the other computers on the network showed up an dI could click on one to connect. Now I see notheng. Any ideas????

I'm getting the same problem. I used to have the snow AEBS, but about 2 weeks ago I got the new one. Never had a problem connecting to my other macs in the house through network in the finder... now, no other machines show up.
Because there's no communication or recognition of devices through AEBS, wireless printing goes out the door too. My printer is plugged in by ethernet to my house network. If I am connected by ethernet to my network, I can print, but if it's wireless, nope.
Today, I got the apple tv. I was super excited unboxing it, hooking it up... and then when I go to sync up through itunes... oh wait, it doesn't show up in the devices list because of my AEBS problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I would love to play around with apple tv so please help... thanks.
