Recommended ExpressCards for new 17" MBP for video editing

Ok, so after sitting on the fence for months I had to buy the new 17" MBP. I just couldn't wait any longer and my trusty PB G4 is getting slow.
After reading the enormous amounts of posts I can see why people are so upset about losing the ExpressCard slot in the 15" models.
But, for the 17" models does anyone have any good suggestions of Expresscards? And what is the optimum set-up I should go for?
I am an Avid and Final Cut editor using a 4-pin Firewire Sony DVCAM deck and two Western Digital External Drives daisy-chained together.
Would love some advice.
thanks!

The Sony DVCAM is FW400 (aka iLink, aka IEEE1394a), so a 4-pin-to-6-pin or -to-9-pin cable will do. I'd get the 4-pin-to-9-pin (FW800 is fully backward compatible with FW400) so you can connect directly to the MBP's FW800 port, if needed. You can just get a FW800 ExpressCard, since it's backward compatible.
I'd recommend this one:

I doubt this can be relocated or moved so you might want to just repost in the macbook pro area.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:

the problem is the Exclusive = Yes  indicator in the access sequence.
Your other message has this exclusive indicator as well.
so if the first  message is found, then no other message wil be determined
to allow several messages in one PO, you must not set this exlusive indicator

  • How can I disable notification for new install update for adobe??

How can I disable notification for new install update for adobe (adobe reader, flash player, etc.)
Is there way from SCCM2012 or group policy or any easy way?????
    Please help me

If you mean the built-in functionality of Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash, it's different mechanism for both.
For the reader, check this guide for example:
    http://www.adminarsenal.com/admin-arsenal-blog/bid/84409/Adobe-Customization-Wizard-XI-Tutorial
For flash, check this guide for example:
    http://jthys.wordpress.com/2012/07/07/disable-automatic-updates-for-adobe-flash-shockwave-player-reader/
After you've studied the above guides, you need to implement those to be used with ConfigMgr application deployment so that when you deploy Reader/Flash, you get the result you want = no automatic update functionality.

  • Which OS, Version, Best Setup on like-new 2008 MBP for non-HD archival DV?

    MacBook Pro 15"
    (Early 2008)
    2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo
    4GB RAM
720GB 7200rpm Hard Drive (original 360GB 5400rpm drive also available)
    OS 10.6.8
(6GB RAM possible but additional $100+ for 4GB module needed now for software upgrades)
I first and last used Final Cut Pro 2-3 in film school on a Titanium PowerBook (500MHz!) during the OS9/X transition.  Next, was an Aluminum PowerBook (1.67Ghz) but because of life changes, I did little editing other than occasionally in iMovie.  Then as an early adopter of iPhone/Pad, I rarely used my AlPB other than for back up, writing, and occasional simple editing.
Now I'm finally entering the early MacIntel age with a pristine "early 2008" MacBook Pro bought for $250 from an elderly original-owner couple who used it only at home for email and iPhoto.  Though at the end of its supported life, it's practically new with a known history of light graphics usage (no video or gaming rendering ever) delivered in the original box with original battery (only 46 cycles!), discs, manual, like-new charger, and no sign of wear.  The original internal wrapper was even saved and put back on the device!  Furthermore, because the wife was a photo enthusiast, the Apple Store swapped out her internal hard drive for a Western Digital 720GB 7200rpm drive and the husband just gave me the original 360GB drive!
I want to do several things with this "new" device.  I've done a lot of research but the world has changed since FCP 3 and the G4 processor and I'm overwhelmed with all the possibilities.  I need guidance and have always appreciated the wisdom and generosity of the gurus here. I thank you all in advance!
iCloud integration: I'd like it since I'm an iPhone/Pad user.  I could upgrade to Mountain Lion but Mavericks, under the best of conditions, is doable on my device and may give me improved CPU and battery performance.  I realize this is best left for the OSX forums.  HOWEVER...
Final Cut Pro: I want to also return to editing in FCP an unfinished documentary using primarily archival film and video converted to non-HD DV.  This may greatly impact how I set up my drives and the decision as to which OS is best.  So, this should probably be my initial decision.
Hard Drive:  First and foremost, I should probably swap the drives and place the 7200rpm drive into an enclosure (Firewire or is that stone-age?) for FCP media, correct?
OS:  With Mavericks, I must use FCPX which is beyond my current non-HD needs and will most likely strain my system resources.  However, the new simplified interface is appealing and I've read some users are running it on "early 2008" MBPs.  If an earlier OS is better suited, then which one?  And also...
FCP Version:  Which is most stable given my model?  And which is best for non-HD needs?  What about FCExpress?  I want to explore more possibilities than what's available in iMovie and would appreciate the simpler interface found in FCE and FCPX, especially since I haven't used any Final Cut since FCP 3 but will gladly embrace what's best.  I want to relearn the program and hope to continue using it for other projects.
Partitioned drive:  Finally, what about partitioning my drive, one for daily life running Mavericks or other OS, the other solely dedicated to an optimized OS/FCP for non-HD editing?  Even at 360 GB it should be doable if I keep it lean and the bulk of storage externally (I ran FCP 3 adequately on a partitioned 40GB drive back in the day).  How much space should I dedicate to an FCP partition?
Finances are tight and I'll need to upgrade Office, other apps (I know there's Rosetta in Snow Leopard but must weigh that with iCloud integration; decsions, decisions!) and probably locate an older copy of FCP on EBay or elsewhere which could be expensive.  I must wait a bit before swapping in a 4GB RAM module and possibly upgrading to an SSD.  Meanwhile, I'd like to experience this like-new MacBook Pro now, both as it was during its heyday and with what's still possible today.  It seems doable and I appreciate any and all suggestions.
Thank you all and have a great day!
    Evalyn
PS: I realize my FCP3 files are probably useless and plan to reimport everything into a new project.  And sorry for the lack of paragraph spacing.  Can't get it formatted right on the iPad!

Just to note that there is much more commonality between FCP3 and FCP7 and/or FCE than with the early version and FCP X. IMO, learning FCP X is worth the effort, but it will require some effort since it is so different than traditional NLE's. You could "get by" with FCE for many types of projects and you should be able to find a copy on eBay or Amazon  for a few hundred dollars. However, you will not be able to open a FCP project of any version with it.  Also, I don;t think I would agree that  its UI is simple; it's essentially the same as FCP.
As for partitioning, some people advise against editing from drives that have been partitioned. I use a partition on one machine and I've not had any problems, so I think it is an option.
As you can see from the replies you've received so far, you have  reasonable choices. Good luck.

  • What computer do you recommend for music production, photo and video editing?

I'm looking to buy a computer mainly for music production with native instruments and photo and video editing with adobe elements. I'd like a crisp image, good sound and also runs as smooth as possible. I am planning on using external hard drives for most  of my storage so space isn't an issue for me. I don't mind buying a refurbished computer. I am looking to spend around $3000 to $3500 on the computer itself. What computer do you recommend?

Please do not double post; it gets too confusing for us - the volunteers - if there is more than one.
the new iMac - just introduced - sounds like it'd be the right thing; I'd upgrade to an SSD and the fastest processor offered. You can also add RAM, but I'd do that later as it'll be less expensive and it's very easy to do yourself.
    Good luck.

  • Can't decided on glossy or matte for new/refurb MBP

I'm going to be getting either a previous generation new or refurb MBP. I can't decide on the matte or glossy screen though. I've got a white iMac(matte screen) that I really like and a PB G4 15" with a matte screen also that is getting dim.
I will mainly use the MBP for stuff like web surfing, email, photo editing, ect. Nothing high end.
I've never seen a MBP matte that is LED backlite. How does that compare to the white iMac screen?
    thx
    lenn

Indoors or outdoors? Reflections can be tolerated indoors. Outdoors, they will overwhelm the screen and tire your eyes. The glossy screen has a lot brighter colors, which can throw off your color perception, so many people dislike the glossies. However, Steve Jobs seems to think they're the wave of the future; let's wait till he's older and with failing eyesight and ask him then...
I've never seen a MBP matte that is LED backlite. How does that compare to the white iMac screen?
Brighter + instant illumination, no warmup period.

  • Price difference for new BT customers for Infinity...

BT are currently offering a BT Infinity 1 package at an online price of £15 a month. If I try to order online , after filling in my details the order always fails but as an existing BT adsl customer it appears that I can only upgrade to infinity for £18 a month. Is this offer only available to new customers and if that is the case it seems terribly unfair. What price loyalty!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Good luck with the options team - i tried them today and they wouldn't budge. There's a lower price for new customers and a higher price for exisiting.
I am out of contract and have been waiting to see what happened with BT Sport before making a decision whether to stay with BB and TV or go elsewhere. I have been very patient for the last 12 months with the new Vision box and the horrendous & numerous problems we've had and this is the reward we get for our loyalty. When I said i could go to a well known satellite broadcaster for not much more per month I experienced a speech saying how much better BT Sport will be than them and that BT have more premier league matches and more sport etc etc !!!  Not really true compared to what I've read about what BT are showing.
Obviously new customer attraction is more important than loyal cutomer retention. MAC code becons I think.
Anyone else had any different experiences?

  • CRVS2010 beta - ReportSource Property for new Viewer-Control for WPF

    Hello,
I use the new Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 Beta. There is a new Viewer-Control for WPF.

    Hi,
O.K., in this way I can set the ReportSource Property, but if I use the load-method, the compiler don't "know" about the properties of the specific report.
    The code
    For Each crReportObject In rd.Section4.ReportObjects
    brings the message
    Fehler     16     "Section4" ist kein Member von "CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument".     C:\VS2010\...     484     40     WpfBudget
An other problem is, that "C:\Users\aTai\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\CrystalReportWpfApplication1\CrystalReportWpfApplication1\CrystalReport1.rpt" don't exist on an user computer.
    Thanks

  • Recommend me a new hard drive for 17" MBP

    I have a Mid-2010 17" MBP running 10.8.2.
Lately I've been getting LOADS of spinning beach balls when I try to do ANYTHING, it's making the Mac practically unusable.
I downloaded Rember and tested the RAM, came back fine.
I've now bough something called SMART Utility to test the hard drive, and it's said "Drive Failing".  The items in red are "Reallocated Sector Count" and "Reallocated Event Count", overall SMART status "FAILING".
The drive is a 1TB Toshiba that I bought brand new at the same time as the Mac and fitted myself.
IIRC because I have a 17" MBP, I can get the wider internal drives? Anyone recommend a decent, cheap, at least 1TB drive that will fit my MBP?
    Thanks!

    Thanks.
I'm wondering whether a 7200rpm 750GB is gonna be better for me then a 1TB 5400rpm drive? Which is better, the 250GB extra space or the extra speed, I wonder? On my current 1TB drive I have a 200GB Bootcamp partition which I NEVER use, so I guess if I go for the 750GB drive, and DON'T Bootcamp it, my Mac will have the same available space as I'm used to.
So, that leaves me with these 3 possibilities:
    A "Generic" one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Generic-750gb-Laptop-Internal-Drive/dp/B004MZ5LZS/ref=sr _1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1362827628&sr=1-1
    A Seagate Momentus: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Momentus-ST9750420AS-internal-SATA-3/dp/B004MME0 N0/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1362827628&sr=1-2
    A WD Scorpio: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Scorpio-7200rpm-Internal/dp/B004I9J5OG/r ef=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1362827628&sr=1-3
All of the above are 750GB, 7200rpm, 2.5" SATA, 16MB cache, all roughly the same price.  Any thoughts?

  • Software for recording video with built in i-sight for new macbooks mbp?

Does any software exist that will allow a macbook or a macbook pro user to record video with their built in isight camera at the top of the screen? If so, let me know. I need to document countless hours of reading the forums...

iMovie will allow you to record from your built in iSight as well.
Lastly, Conference Recorder will allow you to record iChat video conversations. It can be found here: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/conferencerecorder/

  • Running Windows 7 on my new i7 MBP for Gaming

    Hey guys!
just got my new MBP 15" i7. I want to run Steam on it for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and it only currently runs on windows. I have a fresh copy of Windows 7 here and can install it but have heard that if i run windows, its just as capable as getting a virus as a PC which im not to happy about. But if i just open steam, and run steam to play mw2 will that leave me open for viruses and such, there will be no web browsing/torrents or anything else just steam and games.
Also is it better to install 32bit or 64bit onto this mac.
    thanks in advance,
    Chase.

The 2GB is a problem and bug with Apple and Mac Pro (though surprised it wasn't fixed in 2008) with using 32-bit. An i7 MBP
Most newer Macs now (2009) do get access to more than 2GB but it was very very commonly reported. But isn't normal.
Of course having 512MB video and other things, and the fact is Windows x64 has better memory management and security.
MS offering malware protection could and was seen as taking over 3rd party products and seen as a threat. The data though that MS collects can help, and MSSE is very lite on its feet, barely know its there or runs unlike most that are 'in your face' and need constant care and feeding and alerts.
As for firewall, I leave it, plus router is your 1st line firewall anyway.
I used Norton 360v4 when Windows 7 Beta/RC and that was pre-MSSE. I would not touch it today, save your $$$, it is a nuisance, but check their support Community of course.

  • Recommended specs for MacBook Pro - beginner photo/video editing purposes

I'm shopping for my first Mac and was hoping to get some advice on the specs I would want for running software to edit photos and video. I'm a beginner/non-professional but hoping to develop some skills.
I was thinking 8 GB RAM, a mid-sized solid state drive, and a quad core i5 or i7 processor?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I think you've nailed them already. Buy and enjoy.

  • New 15" MBP for Aperture & Adobe - I5 or I7

    Hi.
I have an older MBP with a blown screen (note to self- laptop screens and lemonade don't mix well). I use it for basic applications like Mail, Safari, MS Office. I'm also starting to use it for photos using PS CS3 and Aperture. Can anyone tell me what the 15" I7 will do for me over the I5 (or for that matter if there are any negatives vs the I5). I know that the I5 or I7 are both overkill for the basic stuff. I'm most concerned about what type of benefit I'll see in adobe, which is painfully slow on my current mac.
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading to the 7200 rpm hard drive over the stock 5400 rpm hd?
    Thanks
    Ken

    Hi Ken,
The i7 will definitely be faster, especially for graphically intensive applications like Photoshop because the chip can temporarily overclock itself when needed. The only downside I can think of for the i7 is that it costs more money. However, in some cases, the graphics card is more important than the CPU. If you're using CS4 or planning to upgrade to CS5, you will definitely want a computer with the beefiest graphics card you can get as Photoshop CS4 and above can use OpenGl, thus taking the load off the CPU. But for most people, I feel that the i5 should suffice. I'm still running a 1.5 year old 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo chip and my computer is still zippy when it comes to Photoshop, Final Cut, or anything else for that matter.
As for the HDD, If you're doing a lot of Photoshop work, definitely go for the 7200rpm drive. I just upgraded my laptop to a 7200rpm drive, and I can tell you that my computer is definitely faster. That's not only doing intense graphics work, but also in everyday tasks like booting up.
    Hope this helps.
