Recommended file descriptors for Sparc Solaris
I'm moving an app from Linux to Sparc Solaris and the app keeps dying with a
message of:
java.net.SocketException: Too many open files.
How many open files should weblogic have on a process level and on a system
wide level? The sparc box has a standard SunOs 5.6 I.E. Solaris.
make it 1024, solaris' max, will save hassles. 'plimit' and 'ulimit' are the commands used to configure fd.

SQLPlus and SQLLoader needed for Sparc Solaris 2.6
Hello,
for a test i need the two Oracle utilities SQLPlus and SQLLoader
for Sparc Solaris 2.6.
Is there a test version available ???
Thanks for information.
Olaf.
nullhai Alan,
Let me specific on the problem.
I developed a fail-over software for Linux servers(need 2 servers of same configuration). In this servers ,there are two modes , Active and passive mode. At a time one can be active, and other passive. Clients can communicate the with the servers through a common alias ip address. But the actual ip address of servers can be different.Normally Active server would be having the alias ip.
When switching take place from active to passive mode, server will be assigned with its actual ip address. When switching takes place other passive server becomes active and its get common alias ip address.?
This is the actual scenario . And fake is used in Linux to refresh the arp table of immediate switching device.
But i came to know that solaris os would do it normally when it switches .?
Is this possible with solaris.? -
Maximum recommended file size for public distribution?
I'm producing a project with multiple PDFs that will be circulated to a goup of seniors aged 70 and older. I anticipate that some may be using older computers.
Most of my PDFs are small, but one at 7.4 MB is at the smallest size I can output the document as it stands. I'm wondering if that size may be too large. If necessary, I can break it into two documents, or maybe even three.
Does anyone with experience producing PDFs for public distribution have a sense of a maximum recommended file size?
I note that at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/ the Internal Revenue Service hosts 2,012 PDFs, of which only 50 are 4 MB or larger.
Thanks!First Open the PDF Use Optimizer to examine the PDF.
a Lot of times when I create PDF's I end up with a half-dozen copies of the same font and fontfaces. If you remove all the duplicates that will reduce the file size tremendously.
Another thing is to reduce the dpi of any Graphicseven for printing they don't need to be any larger than 200DPI.
and if they are going to be viewed on acomputer screen only no more than 150 DPI tops and if you can get by with 75DPI that will be even better.
Once you set up the optimized File save under a different name and see what size it turns out. Those to thing s can sometimes reduce file size by as much as 2/3's. -
Proper server sizing for SPARC/Solaris to Intel/R migrations
Is there any collateral available concerning proper server sizing for customers migrating from SPARC/Solaris to Intel/RHEL? I was just asked by our account team that is working with a very large custormer in the pharma space.
My initial knee jerk was to refer them to the OEM but thought I'd look around in these forums first.
My searches have not returned any good results yet.Hi Mike
the public SAP SD-Benchmark homepage ([http://www.sap.com/benchmark/|http://www.sap.com/benchmark/] -> SD two-tier results) gives interesting but very indirect sizing hints. There are several SAP SD-Benchmarks on SPARC/Solaris. I picked some of them:
[2008075|http://download.sap.com/download.epd?context=B1FEF26EB0CC3466320983FEDBEB2A47615DC8F24866B0B6870E95AA3589B515566F7A57D98961BB]: 24650 SD-User w SAP ERP 6.0 (2005 Non-Unicode) on SPARC Enterprise Server M9000 (32CPUs)

You'll probably have the hardware setup of your customer together with the system utilization. Check it with the Solaris/SPARC benchmarks on the public page and check for Intel Benchmarks as well. Make sure, that the SAP release is the same (with 2009 a new SAP release is mandatory for benchmarks -> numbers are not comparable to 100%).
Thanks,

VM Server for SPARC - Solaris OS Licensing
I'm about to buy a new Sun SPARC T4-1 sever. This comes with Solaris 11 and Oracle VM for SPARC. Oracle have advised me that installing Solaris 10 in place of 11 is allowed and supported.
Do I need to purchase an additional Solaris licence for each Solaris virtual machine we want to run on this server? I have tried to look this up on the Oracle website and not found any useful information in this regard.
I want to consolidate different applications and Oracle databases running on a Fire v240 running Solaris 10 and an 280r running Solaris 8 onto the new server. At present I'm undecided as to whether Zones or VM Ldoms are the best way to achieve this. If we use VM for SPARC I would probably want to run two Solaris 10 virtual machines.Licensing and Support is per system not per VM so you wouldn't incur any extra costs adding extra VMs to an existing system that is compliant but as per https://edelivery.oracle.com/EPD/FAQ/get_form?ARU_LANG=US#e11 you'd need to contact Oracle for a categorical answer to Licensing, etc.
Note: it needn't be a choice between Zones and LDoms - you could use both, with a number of Zones within a domain...
The P2V tool might also be useful: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35434_01/html/E23807/ldomsp2v.html#scrolltoc -
Stdio - file descriptor limits - Solaris 10
Hi
New to Solaris from HP-UX and we are porting an application.
I run into a problem whereby we run out of file descriptors - application is TCP/IP and file I/O intensive. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not.
It manifests itself as an error when calling setsockopt.
Increasing the file limits in /etc/system has not relieved the problem.
A google suggests there is a hard limit of 255 on file descriptors for 32-bit applications using stdio - does this still apply? Any workarounds?
Specs:
Solaris 10 01/06
SunOS saturn 5.10 Generic_118822-25 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-v240
Thanks in advance. What shell do you start the application from?
If you use sh/bash/ksh; type "ulimit -a" too see what limits the process will inherit from the shell, if the value for 'open files' is very low you can increase it with:
ulimit -n <new value>
for example;
ulimit -n 4096
if you are using tcsh/csh type "limit -h" to view the limits.
The values you set in /etc/system is the maximum allowed amount of file descriptors per process, it means that the process is allowed to increase its own limit of open files til that limit, but it doesn't mean that the process gets the highest limit automatically.

man ulimit
man setrlimit

Getting file descriptor counts as a non-root user
I have a number of scripts running on Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 systems that currently run as root in order to read file descriptor counts from various processes. currently they do something like: ls /proc/$PID/fd | wc -l to get a count of file descriptors for a given process $PID.
These scripts need to be migrated to run as a non-root user. This means that my method for obtaining file descriptors will only work if the script owner and process owner are the same - this is not always the case however.
For Solaris 10, I can assign the privilege proc_owner to the script owner - this works fine.
For Solaris 8 I'm stuck.
Does anyone have any idea how I can read a file descriptor count from an arbitrary process as a non-root user on Solaris 8 ?
Thanks,
NickFor Solaris 8 I'm stuck.
Does anyone have any idea how I can read a file descriptor count from an
arbitrary process as a non-root user on Solaris 8 ?As I'm sure you suspect there isn't a way to get around the all privileges
or none arrangement in Solaris 8. One workaround option though is the
recently announced Solaris 8 Migration Assistant 1.0 which allows you to
run a Solaris 8 container on Solaris 10 SPARC systems. A good collection
of the relevant links are here:
http://blogs.sun.com/dp/entry/solaris_8_migration_assistant_1
With this option your Solaris 10 script process with the proc_owner
privilege could also be run against the processes in the Solaris 8
container.
Hope this helps.

How to determine which file descriptor opened my driver?
Suppose a user process opens my driver twice. How does open() determine which file descriptor opened the device? In Linux, the kernel will pass a pointer to a structure which represents the open file descriptor. However, Solaris only passes the device number to open(), so I can only determine my device was opened, but not which file. I need this information because my driver needs to keep track of all file descriptors opened for the device.
Thanks!
-DarrenI'm still at a loss why you need to know the file descriptor value (unless the app is sufficiently spaghettied that it has to query the driver to figure out what it opened with what). It's like asking what filename was used to open the device (which you can't get either). Since Solaris is based on a Streams framework, it would be bad to have drivers to even think it has a direct mapping into user space. It would be the same in asking (using /bin/sh):
prog3 4>&1 3>&1 2>&1 | prog2 | prog1
and you want to know from prog1 what descriptor prog3 wrote to. I don't see how linux even does this properly, since any given file open can have multiple file descriptors (via dup). -
Want to increase the file descriptors
Hi,
I am trying the increase the max number for file descriptor allowed in Solaris.
I changed the ulimit soft value to hard limit value (65536) as a root.Even the ulimit -a shows the change value for the soft limit.
When I run my test program to find the value of sysconf(_SC_OPEN_MAX) it shows the changed value. But when I try to open more than 253 files it fails. How do I increase this, also when I change the ulimit -n 65536 why the max number for files open is not increased.
Looking forward for help.
Thanks in advance
-AThe simplest workaround is to compile as a 64bit executable.
-m64 in gcc. I don't remember offhand what the option is for Sun CC.
The difficulty is that any non system libraries your using will also need to be recompiled to be 64 bit.. -
Sudden increase in open file descriptors
Our system is live since an year and half and for the first time I encountered the following exception
"java.net.SocketException: Too many open files"
When our internet application stopped responding I immediately checked the number of open file descriptors on my Solaris machine by using the "lsof" command and found that it was an abnormal 600 value and as I continued monitoring it reached 1024 in matter of minutes and WebLogic gave the above exception. The current setting for file descriptors is 1024. But all these days the average number of open file descriptors was well below 220.
I also took thread dumps and found that most of the threads were stuck at the following location

There is no file descriptor leak in the application. My question is since all the threads are hung at JDBC and socket level, does it mean that a faulty query would have triggered this problem(may be the database was too busy executing a faulty query).
I suspect this because I recieved a database exception soon after the problem appeared. One of my database insert transaction had timed out after 300 seconds. Also this was the first time I recieved this kind of an exception

Hi,
I am using WebLogic 8.1 SP2 on a Solaris machine.Ok, good enough. Once WebLogic times out a transaction, it rolls it back on the
connection. That Sybase driver's rollback doesn't unfortunately affect it's
own running statements. For 81sp3 we added code to explicitly cancel any ongoing
statement during a rollback. This may be what you need to free up those
threads and the socekts the driver may be keeping open. If you can upgrade
to a newer version of 8.1, this code will free you up. Alternately, you can
try either upgrading to Sybase'e latest driver or to our BEA driver for Sybase.
Ask support for the latest BEA driver package for 8.1.

Change 'Soft Resource Limit file descriptor' value
Hi,
How do I change 'Soft Resource Limit file descriptor; value in Solaris 10
Is there any conditions to change this?
Ashraf. There are 2 values. The default and the maximum.
It starts at the default and can be increased up the maximum.
If you want change the value persistently and machine wide, you can put a config option
in /etc/system. Something like
set rlim_fd_cur = 8129
set rlim_fd_max = 8129
If you want to do it for your account only then, just put those lines into your profile.
But you'll still be only able to increase it up to the max.
The max can only be increased by root or in /etc/system. -
Oracle 8.1.5 can install on SPARC solaries 8?
I have a copy of oracle 8.1.5 for sparc solaries 8 , but my colleage told me there is not compatible with solaries 8 and oracle 8.1.5 , only oracle 8.1.7 can be install on solaries 8.
is it true?Hi,
Check if the listener process has started or not.
Sometimes you will have to manually start the listener process.
Go to Oracle Home. Run lsnrctl from bin.
Now you may be able to connect.
Good Luck,

Setup and install failure of Staroffice 8 on sparc Solaris 10
Hello,
I downloaded Staroffice 8 for sparc Solaris and I tried to install it using:

Running installer
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: install

I've seen many threads on this error. I found no solution except to install with pkgadd command.
pkgadd solution works but the default location is /opt. I don't know how to install in another location.
the pkgadd -R root-path don't permit to install where I want:
pkgadd -R /usr/local -d ./ don't work because /usr/local is added at the
default path (/opt, /usr etc..): /usr/local/opt /.., /usr/local/usr.. and son on.
To bypass this I tried to create symbolic link:

Line Drawing best file format for import in InDesign
i was wondering what is the accepted and recommended file format for files to be imported in InDesign. I was under the impression that AI files should be saved as EPS but I just read an article that says that Adobe's Dov Isaacs said that eps will be shortly obsolete. What should I do. I work on curriculum that contains both photographs and line drawing and we use tiff for the former and eps for the latter. Most of our line drawing is done in AI. Howeverwe have a cartoonist that sends us files in jpg format. What would be the best file format for him and for us as we draw in AI?
Article link: http://www.prepressure.com/library/file-formats/eps
The future of the EPS file format
EPS is rapidly becoming an outdated file format which is being replaced by PDF just like PostScript itself is also being phased out and replaced by PDF. Don’t just take my word on this. Here is what Dov Isaacs from Adobe said in a discussion on a PrintPlanet forum about the future of PostScript: “ …Adobe will continue to support EPS as a legacy graphics format for import of non-color managed, opaque graphical data into Adobe applications (such as InDesign and Illustrator). Although we certain do not recommend that new graphical content be stored in EPS format (except to satisfy the need to import data into page layout programs that aren’t quite PDF-centric — no need to mention names here!), our user base should feel comfortable that there is no need to worry about a need to convert their very sizable libraries of EPS-based graphic assets.”Yes, I drag the AI file in.
If after it's in place I need to change I can just right click and chose edit original make the changes and save and the illustration in inDesign will reflect the changes.
On the other hand I can make changes to the original and all iterations of the file will automatically update, say if I used the illustration in several documents.
As an example I had completed a set of documents for a new company, i.e., biz cards, brochures, product labeling, stationery, etc. and in their wisdom they decided to make changes in their logo, which, of course, is on everything. I opened the AI file with the logo made the changes saved and all the documents then reflected the changes. The only caveat to do this seamlessly is to make sure that your file logo size is the same as the original or you might have to tweak placement in the other documents
It is this interoperability that to me makes the Creative Suite so much more than the sum of their parts.
