Recommended Path

Hello,
Our company has a single database server Sun Solaris Sparc-64 running Oracle 9i (3 database instances). We are planning to
A. Upgrade to 10g R2
B. Move everything to a new server
C. Move from Solaris 9 to Linux
What path would you recommend?
Do I migrate the databases to 10.2 on Solaris first, install the Linux database software on the new machine, then export/import the data????

I'm also wondering about 10g's ASM. Is that
something recommended. We have alot of in-house
hardware expertise, and the idea of using Automated
Storage Management seems too simplistic at first
glance. It sounds like you have SAN experts.
ASM simply compensates for
1) the need for a clustered file system in the RAC case; and
2) SAs and Storage Admins 'experts' who recommend stuff like RAID 5 as being best for a database (as compared to 1+0) and then argue that the SAN is great because of the huge cache ... not realizing that the cache is compensating for the RAID 5 deficiencies.
You see, ASM simply provides you with a file system in the case when no file system is available (raw disk). It can complement, or replace, the SAN environment.
I strongly encourage you to look at the ASM manual supplied with 11g in depth. The conclusion is pretty common, and pretty commonly wrong. However, as with everything else in Oacle, the only true answer is 'it depends'. (Docs are available at http://docs.oracle.com or http://tahiti.oracle.com)

  • Install Recommended Path Cluster Fails

When I try to install the patch cluster on a new install I get two kinds of failures depending on what I am trying to do.
    I am installing on a 2900 and the Solaris 2.10 (3/05)
If I use the nosave option then I get a failure code of 45
If I don't use the nosave option I get this:
ld.so.1: zonename: fatal: relocation error: file /sbin/zonename: symbol zonecfg_is_scratch: referenced symbol not found
Can someone tell me what is going on?

I had the same error yesterday, but only in a zone, not the global one.
Here is how I solved my problem:
    FROM THE LOCAL ZONE:
    # ldd /sbin/zonename
    libzonecfg.so.1 =>       /usr/lib/libzonecfg.so.1
    libc.so.1 => /lib/libc.so.1
    libsocket.so.1 => /lib/libsocket.so.1

    /platform/SUNW,Sun-Fire-V240/lib/libmd5_psr.so.1
I noticed 2 .so files the were local to the zone (in /usr). Since the "zonename" command worked fine in the global zone, I suspected corrupted librairies.
    FROM THE GLOBAL ZONE:
    bash-3.00# diff /usr/lib/libzonecfg.so.1 /mnt/ms012/root/usr/lib/libzonecfg.so.
    1
Binary files /usr/lib/libzonecfg.so.1 and /mnt/ms012/root/usr/lib/libzonecfg.so.1 differ
So here is my problem. I just took the .so file from the global zone to the local one.
    bash-3.00# cp /usr/lib/libzonecfg.so.1 /mnt/ms012/root/usr/lib
    bash-3.00# zlogin ms012

    *# zonename*

Voil! the zonename command works fine again. After that, I did a clear on all services tagged in maintenance state in svcs -a.

  • Clipping Path vs Alpha Channel

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but wondering which is better for outlined images (no soft transitions, just hard outline.)
I've used both and don't see an advantage to either EXCEPT when converting an InDesign file to PDF. Files with PSDs with clipping paths seem to make much larger pdfs than same file using PSD with alpha channel. Not important for a final press file, but when I have to email screen proofs, then it's a big deal.
Anyone care to weigh in? Thanks.
    Ringo

    Hi, there,
I found this discussion during a search for alpha channels vs. clipping paths for clipping (for a job I'm working on), and thought I'd offer my own feedback based on my own experiences w/ similar files. I can't really offer a printer perspective, however, although we do work closely with many and also print film fairly regularly for local printers who are not yet Direct-To-Plate.
For what it's worth, I use paths, myself, and save the file as a TIFF. Then I use the Object: Clipping Path menu in InDesign to select the path (I don't specifically designate a path as an actual clipping path in Photoshop anymore, as sometimes an image will have more than one path to isolate different elements).
I find that alpha channels don't look very good when used in InDesign. They're just not that smooth/precise, in my admittedly limited use.
I've uploaded a quick sample to http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr222/Xiebinrui/Alpha_vs_Clipping.jpg -- it's pretty self-explanatory, but the left side shows the bottom of an image using an alpha channel created from the original clipping path (cmd-click on the path to create a selection and then click the "create channel" button in the Channels tab, which automatically creates an "Alpha 1" channel), with the original clipped version on the right. I've tried adjusting the threshold and tolerance in InDesign, but it just always looks bad.
I also haven't used the behemoth Photoshop EPS format since my QuarkXPress/Mac OS 9 days (even then, it eventually became possible to use TIFFs w/ clipping paths -- I could finally see my photo correctly instead of with the horrible Quark EPS preview).
Anyway, re: alpha channels, maybe it's just that I don't know the right way to use them, but they don't seem to be very smooth when importing into InDesign (I was working on a job yesterday and today for which I had to download hi-res images from the client -- many of which used alpha channels instead of actual paths, but they're used on white backgrounds in InDesign, so I just didn't use the channels).
So, anyway, I personally use and recommend paths (vector masks, as Artdirectorringo mentioned, seem to work fine, too) as opposed to standard pixel-based alpha channels, in general, if you're going to be placing the file into InDesign.

  • Eula has stopped working; put path but did not get and "accept" option  now what?

I cannot get Adobe Reader 11.0.02 to work and get the message "Eula is not working" .  I searched and performed the recommended path check ie.

    Now what do I do?

    You double-clicked the Eula.exe ?

  • Ciscoworks 3.2.1 Upgrade Path

We have Ciscoworks 3.2.1 (Windows Server).  We also currently have Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 (appliance) for wireless management.
I'm getting a bit confused trying to determine the appropriate upgrade path for the LMS server.  I'm wondering if I should be upgrading the existing server to Prime Infrastructure 1.2 which will run on the windows server or migrate the wired management to the Prime Infrastructure 1.2 appliance?  I like the idea of one management portal for both wired and wireless networks.  Does Cisco take a module based approach to the licensing of the Prime Infrastructure products?  In other words, do I need to simply buy the "LMS module" for use on the existing appliance?  The Windows Server has dated hardware so I would also need to confirm that it supports the upgrade if that is the recommended path.
I'd like to hear what others have done that have made the switch to Prime Infrastructure from LMS.

LMS and Cisco PI are intended to merge in coming period, but in Cisco PI it almost run a parallel to LMS and is not the complete replacement of LMS.
Every new release comes out with more LMS featured baked inside Cisco PI. Hence I recommend you to keep your LMS for LAN Management tasks.
Cisco PI is an complete and evolved upgrade to WCS/NCS. You can upgrade the following Cisco Prime Network Control System products to Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2:
    •Cisco Prime Network Control System 1.0.0 (NCS 1.0 MR2, 1.0.2.29)
•Cisco Prime Network Control System 1.1.0 (NCS 1.1 FCS, 1.1.0.58)
    •Cisco Prime Network Control System 1.1.1 (NCS 1.1 K MR1, 1.1.1.24)
On Server side, I think CPI can't be installed on LMS Windows server as it has to have a virtulized environment. You should keep and treat both separately. However, if you have got the LMS 4.2 license with CPI , you should upgrade your LMS to version 4.2 and get CPI to manage wireless infrastructure.

  • Conversion path for existing FieldPoint app

I have an existing application using LabVIEW and FieldPoint (FP1000, with AIO and DIO modules, total I/O count: 6).
It appears that NI is phasing out FieldPoint (price is going through the roof and not recommended for new development).
What would be NI's recommended path for new development (I need to change from RS-232 to Ethernet, or USB) and getting the price situation under control?

Irene: thank you for your response.
It appears that compactFieldPoint will require a significant rework of the existing software due to the programmable controller on the cFP-1804.
My existing application contains a user interface as well as the I/O control logic and runs on a desktop computer. If I understand the compactFieldPoint architecture correctly, I will have to break the application into two pieces, one to control the I/O (residing on the cFP-1804) and the other providing the user interface (residing on a desktop or other suitable platform).
Am I correct in my interpretation, above? Is there a supported NI product that I can switch to that will avoid the software rework and provide the distributed I/O functionality of the existing FieldPoint (but in Ethernet or USB, not RS-232)?
Sorry to be a pest, but there are so many offerings from NI, I am concerned that I may overlook the best solution due non-familiarity with the product lines.

  • Access to a site from the Internet not working, but is for other sites on the same SP

    Greetings,
    My environment:
    SP 2013 Enterprise w/ SP1 installed
2 servers in the farm, 1 for SQL, 1 for SP
Both servers are VMs running on Hyper-V, SQL is a bit underpowered when it comes to memory, SP is fine
5 web applications running, including a MySites web app and Central Admin (I've seen where separate web apps isn't the recommended configuration any more, but, this is how it was done when setup)
All sites run using SSL (443), same NIC, using host headers, pretty standard stuff (I think)
Claims authentication on all but Central Admin
Central Admin is firewalled off to all but a select few
1 to 1 correspondence between web apps and content databases
Other than MySites, all sites have either 1 or 2 site collections (search is in a separate site collection on 2 of the sites); MySites has many more site collections
So, site A, site B, site C, and site M are all supposed to be available from the Internet (with SSL and authentication) and also from the internal network. For site A, C, and M, this is true, no problem. Site B however doesn't work when coming in from the
Internet, just internally. I've received multiple reports of this from some of my users around the country, and I've been able to replicate it on my computers.
IIS just gives a blank page, no messages, no login. Chrome does present a login box, and will log into the site and work. This is from a laptop that is a part of our domain with cached credentials, but not directly connected to our network or using
our VPN. A non-domain laptop without cached credentials prompts me to login, as it should, and seems to work. The domain laptop will use the cached credentials to auto-authenticate to A, C, and M, but not B.
I'm using IE 11. I've tried putting the site into Compatibility mode, no joy. I've added the site to the Trusted Sites list, no joy. I don't have IE 10 available for testing (or 9 or 8 or ... just 11 :-(  ) I've flushed the browser cache, emptied the
    cookies, etc.
So, 3 of 4 sites work fine on the same machine, same Internet connection, same browser, same SP. I'm thinking it's something with IE, but, what? Seems like IE should be sending the same creds to all the sites, as they're all in the same Internet domain.
Does IE or Windows cache different creds somewhere? Or is there something in SP? I could see where one person's settings could get hosed somehow, but numerous people around the country with different h/w, different Internet connections, different credentials?
ARGH! HELP!!! Point me at something to look at, because I'm drawing a blank (and getting permanent dents in my forehead from banging it on my keyboard)...
    Thanks much,
    Steven

It seems that the difference between the sites that will open and the one that won't is the Default Authentication provider is set to NTLM on those that open, and Negotiate (Kerberos) on the one that won't. The Authentication Provider for the Default zone
is Claims Based Authentication on all the sites, just site B (which won't open) is set to Negotiate (Kerberos), the others are set to NTLM.
Short term: can I change the provider to NTLM without destroying the site?
Long term: point me in the direction for setting up Kerberos correctly on my server/farm, as from what I can tell Kerberos is the recommended path forward. I'll setup a non-production test site and get it figured out.
    Thanks much.

How can I adjust the safari sound volume other than the usual settings in the system preferences?
I am using an apple mac air, updated with OS X Yosemite.   Looking at the same web site video from two different users accounts on the same computer,  the sound is drastically attenuated on one user account relative to the other.
Sound settings in system preferences are maxed out.

  • How do companies handle Apple IDs with the new iOS7 features?

My company has a number of iOS devices that it has purchased for employees to use.  Traditionally we have let employees use their personal Apple IDs on their company phones/tablets so they can have access to their personal purchases, etc.  It is not really feasible for us to force employees to use a corporate Apple ID as that would prevent them from accessing their personal content and there would be a revolt if we tried to implement that policy.
Now that the new iOS7 and Find my iPhone enhancements prevent you from restoring an iOS device to factory defaults without the associated Apple ID credentials, what is the recommended path for businesses to take if they are not large enough to warranty an MDM solution?  If an employee leaves the company and turns in an iOS device that is password protected, how can the company restore it if they don't have the employee's Apple ID?  Normally this is not a problem, but occassionally an employee leaves on bad terms and won't cooperate.
Is there a way to register a device to a corporate Apple ID, or otherwise "flag" the device as a corporate-owned device so the corporate Apple ID can restore the device to defaults while still allowing the employee to use their personal Apple ID on the device?

You can't rely on just Yelp. Apple Maps pulls data from a variety of business listings vendors. Here's some more detail:  How To Add a Business To Apple Maps

  • Install printer error

Trying to find a fix for the error one gets when asking PSCS4 to ' print '! After years of working well, out of the blue when I select ' print ' I get the error message telling me that I must first install a printer despite the fact that I have a working printer installed! Actually have 3 printers installed and they ALL WORK JUST FINE.  This in an Adobe PS 4 error.  The solutions offered by Adope are all unworkable as they all tell you to first select print and then do something else BUT IF YOU SELECT PRINT YOU GET THE ERROR MESSAGE AND CANNOT DO ANYTHING ELSE! STUPID.  Help??

Thanks for the idea. I tried it but it didn't work. Still get the same message. Good news is that I found it happens only with that one image! SO.... I recreated the print file from the raw file and all is well again. Geesh.  Still would like a solution other than buying CS6 !  Tried all the Adobe recommended paths but since I neglected to register the product I'd have to pay for further ' advice' from them.

[Thursday, March 29, 2012 5:17 PM] -- David Frith says:
    Can you escalate this call?

    Hi David,
The recommended path to resolve the issue is to upgrade to the latest UPD driver which does not use an hpzbdi files.  The latest version of the driver has changes for a terminal server environment.
    UPD is available here:
    www.hp.com/go/UPD
It is recommend that the UPD in a Citrix Environment be reviewed.  You can find it by the following:
    Start at www.hp.com/go/UPD
    Click on the Documentation Tab
Scroll down and click on "HP Printers Supported in Citrix Presentation Server Environments (PDF)
Migrating the print queues on the Print Server can be automated using AutoUpgradeUPD.exe in the PARK.
The PARK is available the the same download page as the UPD.
Click on the Download Software on the same URL from above.
    Select driver PDL and OS.
Scroll down to HP Printer Administrator Resource Kit.
At the same time, grab the System Administrator's Guide as well as a resource.
Making sure that the content is  familiar and that the preparation for the roll is key in making it go smoothly.
It is highly recommended that the UPD driver be qualified in a test environment prior to rolling into production.

  • Using Windows 7 RC on bootcamp: will i need upgrade or full?

I'm running Windows 7 RC (Ultimate) on my macbook pro via bootcamp. I'm anticipating the expiration on it and I need to know if it will i need to buy the upgrade or the standalone for windows 7 ultimate when it is released in october?

The upgrade version for $49 is thru July 11th. The expiration on RC is not until MARCH though.
And a clean install is recommended path.
I would NOT buy Ultimate this go-around! Home Premium is fine for most anyone.

    Hi Basel,
Honestly, I wouldn't suggest a direct upgrade from 8.2 to 9.0. This is a *major* upgrade. The recommended path to reach 9.0 would be from 8.2-->8.4-->9.0
Here are the release notes for 9.0:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa90/release/notes/asarn90.html#wp690047
    Per above document:
If you are upgrading from a pre-8.3 release, see also the Cisco ASA 5500 Migration Guide to Version 8.3 and Later
for important information about migrating your configuration.
Once you are on 8.3/8.4 (I would suggest 8.4 as a lot of issues were fixed post 8.3 as that was a huge transition from 8.2) upgrade to 9.0 is fairly simple.
Major part is upgrade from 8.2 to 8.4 as configuration changes and few things can be broken as a result. I would highly recommend you to check these docs before attempting an upgrade and also do it with some maintenence window so as to correct things in case they broke:
Following doc talks about 8.3 but it is applicable to direct upgrade to 8.4 as well:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-12690
    Release notes for 8.4:
