Recording Demo and Simulation Modes

Prior to beginning my recording session, I'm selecting the
Demontration and Training Simulation mode. When I complete the
recording and save, Captivate prompts me with a "Project to Open"
field that contains: Demonstration or Training Simulation. My goas
was to have the first section of the project as a demonstration and
the subsequent section as a Training Simulation. How do I combine
both the Demonstration Mode and Training Simulation Mode into one
file? It appears that although Captivate allows you to record in
both modes, you must save in one or the other????

Welcome to our community, Curtis
As you have seen, Captivate does create two files when you
record that way. However, it doesn't mean you can't have both in a
single project if you like. But before you do that, please note
that projects DO have a suggested maximum size. Adobe Technical
Support seems to be advising folks that 50 Megs for the CP (source)
file of your project is considered the upper limit. Personally, my
recommendation has always been 50-65 slides as a very broad and
general rule of thumb. So if each project is already at or beyond
that size, I wouldn't go there with having both in a single
project.
Assuming the combined project would fit within those
guidelines, you may open one project, then click File > Import
> Slides/Objects... and point at the other file to bring it in
and combine it with the original. Note that you would want to first
select the last slide in the original project, so that the new
stuff would follow that slide and append.
Assuming this would create a project that is too large to
handle, you should consider leaving them as separate projects, then
using what we call a "Daisy Chain" so the next is opened by the
project as the first ends.

  • Captivate 5.5 Template -- Settings for Demo and Training modes

    Hi
I am trying to create a Captivate 5.5 template for our simulations which will be captured in both Demonstration and Training modes.
In the template file, I go to Edit > Preferences > Modes, select the both the modes (from the drop-down list) and make required settings, and save the template.
Now, when I try to record a new project based on this template, I am asked to select any one of the modes. As a result, I get only one type of output. How to get both modes in one go? Is there a workaround?
    Thanks for your help.

You'll need to add your simulation capture slides to the template AFTER capturing the two outputs.  The template can only really be used as a shell to add introduction and conclusions, as well as quizzing etc.
Since (as Lieve points out) you end up with separate files for each different output, you'll also need to use the templates to create a shell project for each different output, and then paste the slides from the captures into the shell as it were.
Quite frankly, you're better off doing things this way anyway (capturing first and then pasting the capture slides into another shell project) because in any capture project you need to do quite a bit of editing and culling of duplicates or redundant captures.  It's quicker and easier to do this editing when the project file is smaller.  So what I do is clean up my captures first to get down to the minimum number of slides required for the simulation, and then paste those slides into my project file generated from the template.  I do the copy/paste after culling out the unnecessary slides, but before saving the capture file. That way, I always have all of the original captures as a backup in case I went too far in the culling.  Only after the project has been finalised to I go back and delete the original captures.

  • DAQ Quadrature Code Example and Simulated Mode

    Hi,
I have what I hope is a quick question:
I currently am trying to develop .Net software for an NI-DAQmx device. I am
attempting to read data from either 1 or 2 attached quadrature devices sampled
at 1000hz with the resulting data streamed to a file on a Windows machine. I
was wondering which code example(s) would be applicable and how I can run the
example both in simulated and live modes.
    Thank you,

Hi, you can find those examples on your computer. You just have to go to the NI-DAQ folder under National Instruments on your C drive. For example on my computer the file path is this : C:\Users\Public\Documents\National Instruments\NI-DAQ\Examples  in there you can find many examples of text based DAQmx.

  • Merge a demo and a training recording

I recorded a software simulation in both demo and assessment mode.
Is it possible to merge the two? I think it makes sense to let the users watch the demo and then take the assessment. But when I was trying to copy all the slides from the assessment recording to the demo recording, I was unable to copy the "Quiz Result" slide.
So what is the correct way to have demo, training, and assessment in the same project?

As long as the two projects share the same physical height and width dimensions you should be able to just copy and paste slides from one to the other.
The Quiz Results slide MUST be generated in the final module so that everything works properly when it comes to the quiz scoring.  So don't try to paste that one across.
Additionally, be aware that Captivate only allows you to have one quiz (and therefore one Quiz Results slide) per project.  However, you can dummy up your own Quiz Results slide using variables if you want to have it.

  • Changing recording defaults in training simulation mode

    Hi,
Is there a way to make textboxes appear automatically instead
of hint boxes when recording in training simulation mode (or
alternatively to format hint boxes so that they have arrows
pointing to the relevant text or click box)?
    TIA for any advice.
    A Captivate Novice

    Hi there
I replied to this over in the TechShoret forums, but will
reply with same here just for the sake of being complete and in
case someone down the road searches.
Okay, I'm thinking there are a few ways you would accomplish
    it.
    Method number one:
This method isn't very clean. I'm guessing that you really
want the hint caption to have the callout pointer at various
places, depending on where the caption is as related to where the
Click box is. This method would involve choosing a different
caption type where the Callout Pointer is always perhaps pointing
up and to the left. Then you copy this behind the scenes. The end
result is that Captivate thinks it is using the rectangular caption
type (the type with no callout pointer) and instead, the one with
    the pointer is used.
    Method number two:
After recording, you edit one of the hint captions that was
automatically added. Change it to use the callout pointer you want,
then use the "Apply to all" feature to essentially create the same
effect described above. All hint captions would then use the same
    callout pointer.
    Method number three:
Before recording, instead of choosing a specific mode
(Demonstration, Assessment Simulation or Training Simulation) you
choose the mode labeled "Custom". You then edit the Custom mode so
it includes all the features you would want. In this manner, you
may combine the features of Demonstration mode with Simulation
mode. I'm thinking this may be the approach you will want to take.
But only you can decide that after reading what each approach
    offers.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Show Typing in Training Simulation Mode

    Hi -
I recorded some screens using the Training Simulation mode
and I'm wondering if it's possible to allow the end user to control
the flow until they get a screen where they need to type something
in a text field. At this point I would like to just have the end
user see the typing appear on the screen. After the typing appears
the end user could then click on the appropriate button to continue
    with the Training Simulation.
For example: How to Save a Word Document.
The end user would click on File to display the File menu.
Then click on Save As... to display the Save As dialog box. The
name of document file they are saving would automatically type
(show typing) for them then the user clicks on the Save button.
    Is this scenario possible?

    Hi Chris,
My apologies for the misunderstanding. You can't directly do
what you want in the Training Simulation recording mode because by
default the mode settings eliminate capture of typing and replace
it with the text-entry box. Sorry.
There are several ways to handle the situation, though. One
is to record in Demonstration mode. Be sure that "Record
Keystrokes" is checked, on the Options > Recording Options
dialog. The keystrokes will be recorded for you. Of course, then
you will have to add the interactivity (click-boxes, etc.) that
would have been entered for you in the simulation mode.
Another option you might like better is to go to my friend
and fellow community expert Paul Dewhurst's web-site and get a
text-animation called "aimee typing". After downloading it, just
    place it in the folder:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
2\Gallery\TextAnimations (for Captivate version 2), or
    C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Captivate\Gallery\TextAnimations
    (for version 1).
    Paul's web-site is at:
    http://www.raisingaimee.co.uk/
and what you need is located in the "Downloads" section (see
panel on the left for links). There are a bunch (13?) of
text-animations there, and if I were you I'd get them all - be
aware you may have to register and/or pay Paul for them, but they
are worth far more than he asks - if he is charging for them.
With Paul's text animation you can add "live" typing effects
on the fly, controling the font, font size, font color, and typing
speed. It does take a little planning to get things to appear
correctly and at the right time, but is not very difficult.
To answer your last question, "Show Typing" should
never appear when you have recorded in Training Simulation
mode - because typing is never captured in that mode. Good luck and
    have a great day!
    .

  • Demo and Production install

I have performed Demo install OVM and it works fine but I need to keep the same database (Oracle Database 11g XE) since everything is configured then perform production install. Is this possible or I have to start from scratch? Thanks

This is another issue, so please start a new topic for this. The Disk Ordering tab should always show all the disks that are assigned to a VM.
2- What's the difference between XE and SE? Do they work differently with OVM?XE is the free-to-use, resource-limited version of Oracle DB, which comes with no support.
3- If using Oracle SE, do I need to configure anything to be able to use it or the installer will automatically configure it? You need to install SE or EE manually first, either on the Manager server or another machine. Once SE is installed, you use the Production installation mode for Oracle VM Manager to connect to the existing SE database.

  • How do I get the Preference Training Simulation Mode to work?

I've worked with Captivate 3 for years and was required to upgrade to Captivate 4. In 4, I cannot get the Training Simulation Mode to save. I go to Edit > Preferences > REcording > Mode and select Training Simulation. Click OK. Go back into Preferences and check - Demonstation is in the Recording Mode field. I've tried everything I can think of. What can I do to correct this problem?
The main reason we use Captivate is that it captures the key strokes and provides action steps already populated in the capture. Without this feature, it will take me days rather than hours to complete my project.
Please advise as soon as possible.
    Thanks, Rhazelbaker
PS> I did find a blog from another person with the same issue. The response simply defended the integrity of Captivate and did not provide concrete direction to solve the issue. I'm hoping you can provide concrete instructions.

    Hi there
To bring the Library into view, click Window > Library.
Once you are seeing the Library, right-click one of the items you see there and you should see a context menu offering the ability to Select Unused Items. This will select them all. Then a simple tap of the Delete key on your keyboard should remove them.
Where are you changing the settings before you record? I ask because Captivate 4 changes the playing field substantially. Now when you begin the process the Red Recording Window looks a lot different. Similar to below.
You then have to choose the mode differently.
    Does that help anything?

  • Getting DEMO and Training the same

We have a requirement that all users should be able to select either the Demo or Training recordings. When I record with the two selected I end up with two seperate tabs in the captivate window after pressing END.
If I then go and modify the Training session putting in notes, extra information and formmatting, how do I then transfer the same changes to the Demo version? Is there a way to copy all changes from one to the other? How do I publish both recordings at once as currently I have to do them seperately?
If I originally recorded just the training mode, can I convert it to a demo after I make all my changes?
Likewise I have several recordings that were done as demos and now I need them to be Training, how do I convert them without having to re-record it all again?
Hopefully someone has some answers to these questions, becuase without this flexibility, the Captivate program just does not meet our companies requirements for a help tool.
    Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forum,
In this thread I ust answered some of your questions about the demo/training files.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/915684?tstart=0
You cannot publish both at once, you can however copy all the slides and have one big file in which you can insert a branching possibility and then publish that one file.
The differences (default) between the three kind of Automatic captures are to be found in the Preferences, Recording, Modes. There you'll see what Captivate is inserting for each mode. If you want to modify a file manually you'll have to reproduce this. Some examples of the work flow for changing a demo mode to training:
delete the mouse object on each slide where it is present
delete the highlight boxes that were added on click locations and add click boxes in that location with the captions you wish
delete the text captions that were automatically added
if text was typed during capture, replace that typing object by Text animation, delete it then and replace by a Text Entry Box that you'll have to configure
You see this is quite a lot of work, but can be done. If possible I experienced that capturing again is a timesaver compared with changing manually.

  • Recording a browser simulation with sound (no sound recorded)

    Hello folks,
I need to record a short simulation of my published [on LMS] training material using FMR mode. The purpose is to demonstrate to clients the logging in, enrollment, and course viewing.
The problem is that Captivate 5 is not recording the audio... the only audio input option available is an external mic.
Is there a way to make Captivate record 'internal' audio (as opposed to mic feed audio)?
    Thank you

Ah... I suppose if I were in your shoes, I would think the same way.
I do agree with you that it should be easier... but please trust me, my Lenovo doesn't have the correct drivers and like my work laptop, not all Windows 7 systems have the "Mixer" audio device.
All this laptop has is the "External Microphone - Conexant 20561 SmartAudio HD" device.
... and yes, Show "Disabled" and "Disconnected" devices are turned on. :-(
The properties for the "External Mic" does include a tab called Listen... and with a setting called "Listen to this device". Basically, it directs/feeds the external mic input back into the speakers. With that turned on, Captivate still will not record system sounds (yes, I did restart Captivate after this setting was enabled).
The problem is that Captivate doesn't include any other Audio Input Device, except "Volume (External Microphone (Conexant 2)". In other words, it is as explicit as that, Captivate will only record what it hears through the assigned Mic.. This is quite a different setting than what Camtasia allows.
    >It is my hypothesis that the capability is likely there and that TechSmith has automated the configuration for the user.
Tempting to agree with that but in speaking with Camtasia experts, they are actually using their own algorithm [built-in to the recorder] to allow system sound recording on most hardware (although it doesn't work for all computers). Therefore, there are no Techsmith added devices that I can utilize in Captivate.
After doing some research, it seems that I am in a relatively small group of computer users who doesn't have a Mixer device (or equivalent).
I appreciate your effort to help.

I recently installed update 5.0.3.631 after which I attempted to recorde an assement simulation.  I change my recording mode to assessment simulatin, select my options and select OK.  If I click settings again the record mode has reverted back to demonstration.  I know Version 4 had this issue but it was fixed with version 5.  Now after this Update the issue is back again.  Can anyone help?

Yes, You've made some mistakes or bad assumptions about that express vi.
Frequency is 4Hz Samples per second is 100,000 (Orders of magnatude too high) samples generated are 76 (0.76mSecs worth of data).  1% duty cycle so a transition only occurs once every thousand loops! 1315 or 1316 loops between L-H transitions to be more accurate

  • Lock records when in Update Mode / problem with 2 users on 1 document

    Hi,
when user A updates e.g. a purchase order and user B goes into this purchase order and updates e.g. the remark before user A, then user A cannot save his changes. Imagine user A has put in several new lines and has made several price adjustments, his work will be gone.
In most cases this should not happen very often, but it could. Since B1 recognizes when another user has updated the document before, it should be possible to solve this situation more convenient (either by lock, saving to a new document, comparing to the old version, etc).
    Thank you
    Sebastian

    Hi Sebastian,
Your request is understandable. It may not have big problem to change current process by coding. However to lock records whenever in update mode, that could create too many locks. It is basically not good for performance. The trade off may be allowing save as function. However, this may not be a desirable solution for most end users.
    Thanks,
    Gordon
