Recovering a Pages iWork document without TimeMachine

Ok here is the deal; I was working in iWork pages on a document and accidentally closed it without saving thinking I already saved it how I wanted earlier (which I didn't). I then finally discovered what the application TimeMachine and I am going to get it up and working but that won't help me recover the document I lost BEFORE I started using TimeMachine! Is there any tricks or way to recover my lost document from the computer at this point? I know what to do in the future (use time machine, save more often, backup my documents automatically) but I figure there must be SOME way to recover the document using technical computer "backdoors" or tricks. Right? Please help me.

Microsoft Word has autosave, it still has to save.
You can have Pages make backups of the previously saved version (in Preferences) and there is free autosave software available:

  • How do I open up a Pages 5 document without the side formatting window also being open?

I use my Macbook primarily for writing, and every time I open a new Pages 5 document the side formatting bar/window/panel is also open. I have a small screen on my 13 in macbook, so I have to close that window up so I have room for other windows to work on multiple Pages docs at once.
Kind of a drag that I have to add an extra closing click each time I want to work on a Pages doc. Hey, those clicks add up after a while, right?
How can I set the default so that a new (or old) page opens with the formatting window/bar already closed?
I've already tried opening a blank doc, closing the formatting window, saving it as a template then setting that as my defalt "new document" template. When I open from that template the font style and size are the way I set them, but that darn bar is open.
Thanks in advance for any clues as to how to remedy this situation.

    Peter,
Yeah, that's what I'm doing now - just clicking it shut each time I open a doc. But man, what a cumulitavely annoying extra step that has not been there in the 4 or 5 years that I've been using Pages, but just showed up last week.
Seems like there must be some sort of setting to make this not be the case.

  • How to move pages between documents WITHOUT elements shifting

Hi everyone! My team members and I are so frustrated over what I think should be a really simple issue: copying/moving/dragging pages between documents and NOTHING CHANGING.
Whenever we move pages between documents (which we have to do on a monthly basis - moving content into client branded files), at least ONE thing will shift and it usually has to do with overset text and/or text wrap. We have googled our brains out. We've tried everything on this list How-To: 10 Techniques for Copying Pages Between InDesign Documents | CreativePro.com and in the various Lynda tutorials we've looked at. We have combined our powers and still can not solve this problem so now I come to you, hoping that you can please please please help us figure out this issue before one of us throws a computer out the window.
We have this one document. And this is what one of the problem pages looks like. Everything is on one layer. (look at the section marked 5)
Then I move the pages (copy/paste the content; drag and drop the pages; etc.) into the destination document so we can apply branding.
    AND THIS HAPPENS.
WHY does this text suddenly become overset?
The preferences of both documents are IDENTICAL. In fact, Document B was originally created from Document A.
AND FUN FYI: I took Document A and Saved As a new name. Opened it the new name. And tried moving the pages into the newly named document -- and the SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED.
I am going to bash my head into a wall. Can someone please shed some light on this? Have you seen this before? How do we fix it??

Doesn't saving as IDML lose some of the properties if you use any shadow or other effects?
That's not something that I have ever heard, but since I haven't heard everything, I suppose it's possible. What you may be thinking of is that some people use idml to migrate a file to a lower version, and if that lower version lacks a feature of the version that created the file, you will either lose or modify the way that that feature worked in the original. I don't think that even in that scenario that a feature that was present in both versions would go away just because it took a trip through idml to get to an earlier version. And if idml botched shadow or effects, nobody would use it, and I don't think Adobe would have it.

If we had just done a final Save As on the Document A before giving it to the team member who's going to be copying the content into Document B, does that not count as doing a Save As? You mean the minute it's freshly opened try doing another Save As? (P.S. Edit: Just tried this. Didn't change what happened. )
The thing that Save-As does is remove little bits of data associated with undos that a normal Save retains. Sometimes this data can lead to problems, so any time you do it, it will help, but if you do it at stage 37 and you hand off at stage 38, you will have cleared out most all of anything that may have built up over time. I don't want to give the impression that it is required, but it certainly doesn't hurt, and is probably a good idea to Save-As periodically.

  • How do I edit a 100 page pdf document without converting to Word. I do not want to edit content. Simply want to save certain pages in seperate files...

I have a large pdf file. I need to break it down into "x" numbers of pages.
    Must I convert to Word?
I do not wish to edit the content, simply need certain pages in the pdf saved alone and not in master pdf.

  • Mavericks Pages 5 documents won't open

I upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago. I have documents that were created in Pages ’09 that will no longer open. (Some will, and I don’t know what the difference is) When I try to open one, it either opens, no problem, or I get the message “The required index.xml file is missing”. This message is in a rectangle with an icon representative of Pages ’09 (the inkwell). Since it has this icon, I’m assuming that I was trying to open it in the ’09 version, which is what I intended to do. Since this didn’t work, I tried to “open with Pages.app (4.0.5)” and got the same message. I’m a little afraid to try to open it in Pages 5, since I’ve heard rumors that this could ruin the document. I’m at a loss, and, like everybody else, I have important documents that I need access to. After I upgraded I had both Pages ’09 and Pages 5 on my dock, instead of one of them being in the applications folder. I have looked briefly at pages 5 and determined that I prefer ’09. They are both still in my dock but I never open Pages 5. I’m using an iMac with 10.9.4. All my documents are in Pages ’09 and I want to open them in Pages ’09. What to do?

Having two versions of Pages on your Mac is a royal pain. The correct version of Pages '09 for Mavericks is v4.3. Apple has a downloadable update here. I am current with both, including Pages v5.2.2. Your opening errors may be due to that Pages v4.0.5 running on Mavericks and needing a newer v4.3. Run Disk Utility from /Applications/Utilities after updating Pages ’09 per above, and verify/repair your permissions.
I have dragged and dropped Pages '09 from /Applications/iWork '09, and Pages v5.2.2 from /Applications onto my Dock, so the icons are adjacent. You should drag and drop each of your Pages Dock icons out on to your Desktop about two inches and release them to remove them from the Dock. Don't worry, these are aliases to the real applications. Now drag/drop each of the Pages applications back onto the Dock as I have done. You will now know exactly where these icons point back to the individual application locations.
In System Preferences > Security & Privacy (click the gold lock), under Allow apps downloaded from: mine is set to Mac App Store and identified developers. I am wondering if you have FileVault enabled for your boot drive? I have never seen your dialog as posted, so try my settings.
With both applications installed on your Mac, you can only open Pages ’09 documents as follows, and double-click will always open them in Pages v5+.
Launch Pages ’09, and open the document via the application File chooser
Right-click on the ’09 document, and from the Open With sub-menu, select Pages (v4.n)
Drag and drop the ’09 document onto the Pages ’09 Dock icon.
Pages v5.2+ will open a Pages ’09 document without asking if you want too. As Pages v5.2+ is about 110 features/functionality less than Pages ’09 v4.3, it will also silently filter content from your ’09 documents as it opens them. This has been a catastrophe for those without backups.
For forward organizational purposes, I would recommend that you create a custom tag name and color in Finder Preferences for explicit identification of your Pages ’09 documents. You can change this color and tag name in the open document title when you roll over the file name. Then you have both a visual clue to avoid opening these in Pages v5+, and the tag name allows you to use an Finder Window, or Spotlight search on that name to exclusive find Pages ’09 documents. Here is an example of a Finder tag: Pages search:

  • How do I save a Pages 2012 document as an iWork '08 file?

How do I save a Pages 2012 document as an iWork '08 file?

    Kev,
The File > Save... dialog seems to be only available for documents that are in an "unversioned" state. (I don't know what the official title is for the condition of having a document that is unmodified from its initial naming, so I'll call it "unversioned", meaning that it hasn't had a version update to it's base state.
If you start from a template your first save will be a File > Save... Right after this first Save, your document has no Version History. It's "unversioned".
If you File > Duplicate you have created a new document in an "unversioned" state and your next Command-S will give you the option to save a copy to '08 format, the same option you had during your first document save.
My understanding of this situation is that any file with a Version History is stored across two files, one with the base document and one containing the revisions, the changes you've made since the initial save. Save a Version updates the file containing the changes. File > Duplicate combines the base file and the revisions into one new base document, ready to be Saved. After saving, if you make some changes in this new document your option is again to Save a Version or Duplicate and the cycle continues.
There are also Revert options that I haven't discussed, but I haven't studied them to know what the menu behavior is.
I know it can seem confusing and I'm not defending it, but I will recognize Apple's right to try to move the technology forward and I accept that I can learn what's going on and move with them, or I can get off the bus and watch it go down the road without me. It's not the first time I've had to try to figure out what's going on, and I'm sure it won't be the last. If you think I have the logic wrong I'd love to discuss your observations. I'm not interested in discussing if Apple should be doing this or not.

  • Pages/iWork '08 Frozen/Won't Open or Create Documents/Tiger 10.4.11

I am running the latest version of Tiger 10.4.11 on my PowerMac G5 and have iWork '08. It has been updated and successfully running well until yesterday. Suddenly, I can no longer open any existing documents without any of the programs freezing (Pages, Keynote or Numbers), nor will the software create new documents or open the template browser. In fact, when trying to open a document the status bar looks like it is opening, then nothing happens and the programs all freeze up. I have to force quit.
I have tried trashing all the preference files already and restarting, to no avail. I have also repaired my permissions, which I do routinely. I have tested the hard drive and it is okay. I am experiencing no other problems with any other apps, etc. Have 4GB RAM and the programs still freeze with no other apps open. This is really bizarre, as trashing the preference files has not helped. Has anyone else experienced this who can help me? I appreciate it very much as I need to access my docs. Thank you so much. Renee

Thank you for your response. Sorry for the delay in replying, but I have been ill with a bad flu the past two weeks. I tried both your suggestions and neither worked. Created a second user account but still can't get ANY of the iWork '08 apps to open documents or create new ones. They freeze up immediately, and won't even open the template browsers. Also tried reinstalling iWork '08 (after deleting all the old app and app-related files), and still no go. Deleted all preference files, etc. without success. Also discovered the same problem with iWeb now, as it will also not run nor can I access any of the template files.
All my other apps are running fine (Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop Lightroom, MS Word and Excel, etc.) and I have tried repairing permissions and disk repair multiple times. Still can't get anything to open. When I try to open an existing document I had created before, all I get is a blank window. Same for trying to create a new document, just a blank white window I cannot type in.
Then I cannot close any of the windows and must quit the iWork '08 programs to exit. I am on Tiger 10.4.11 and have also tested my font database, finding no problems. It is weird to me that I can run MS Word and an industrial page layout program like Adobe InDesign without problems, but cannot run Pages '08 (or Numbers or Keynote or iWeb). Again, reinstalling the apps fresh did nothing. Cannot figure out what the heck is wrong. Sounds like I will have to pay for Apple Tech Support#$$$

  • I am trying to email document from pages. iWork discontinued. How can I send it?

I have been trying ti email a doc from pages but a pop up says that iWork is dicontiued. How can I send the document?

You are running an outdated version of Pages '09 v4. The iWork site was shutdown years ago.
Which version of OS X are you running ( ▸ About This Mac)? And the exact version of Pages '09 v4 (Pages > About Pages)?
The short answer is to save your Pages '09 document to the filesystem, open Mail, and drag/drop the Pages document into the compose window. If this is going to people without Pages, export it as a Word document (.doc), and then attach it to Mail.

  • Recover unsaved pages document

Is there any way to recover a .pages document that I closed without saving?

No, but if you feel like it's worth it, upgrading to Mountain Lion or Lion through the App Store will give you autosave and versions functionality.
If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, the apple store can help you.

  • I had pages installed on my mac but then my system crashed.  When it was recovered the pages application was gone.  Is there a way to recover it without having to pay for the app again?

I had pages installed on my imac but then my system crashed.  When I got it recovered the pages application was gone.  Is there a way to recover it without purchasing the app again?

I have the same issue with pages/keynote and numbers (iWorks).  Came preinstalled when I bought the macbook air back in 2010 (Out of warranty). It crashed a couple of months ago so I took it to Apple but when I got it back the iWorks was no longer there.  I cannot go back to Apple for a few months as there is no Apple store where I am currently.

  • How do I add page numbers to my document without the page numbers automatically changing. I do not want the page numbers the software automatically places into my document.

How do I add page numbers to my document without the page numbers automatically changing? The title page is blank, I can type in 1 on the 1st typed page, but the #1 automatically goes into the next page and will not change.

Click at bottom of the first page:
Menu > Insert > Section break
Click somewhere in the 2nd page (not the header/footer)
Inspector > Layout > Section > Page Numbers > Start at 1 > Configuration > uncheck use previous headers and footers
Click into the header or footer of the second page:
    Menu > Insert > Auto Page Numbers…
If there is anything in the header or footer on the first page that you don't want just select it and delete it.
If you really wanted to manual place page numbers on each page you will have to use a section break between each and every page. I can't imagine that would be useful.

  • How can I paste a part of a sheet from Numbers in Pages as text, without the formulas. The reason I need this (and was used to in Office) so that I have the freedom to delete something in one cell (in pages document) without causing changes.

How can I paste a part of a sheet that I copied in Numers in a pages document without the formulas, simply as text. Used this a lot in Office. When I make some changes in the pages document. f.i. deleting a cell, I don't want to change other cells. Also when I copy a part of a sheet from Numbers and one of the cells that is part of the formula is not also copied, when I paste in Pages it shows as an error.
Hope that You can me help with this.

    Leon,
There are two solutions to the first question, narrowing to one solution when you have a broken link causing an error.
    Here's the "works always" solution.
Copy (Command-C) the table or range in Numbers
Click off the table on the blank canvas of the sheet.
    Edit > Paste Values
    Command-C
    Switch to Pages
    Command-V

  • Download iWork documents from iCloud to Mac in Pages 5.0 and Numbers 3.0

Does anyone know how to download iWork documents from iCloud to Mac, most specifically from Pages 5.0 and Numbers 3.0. It seems that Apple have taken away the ability to do so, as in the past I believe there was a download button... All I am trying to do is download the document to attach and send via Gmail.
Extremely frustrating as I can't find any discussion surrounding this problem.

Have you tried right-clicking the document to get an option to download it.

Just opened a new blank document in Pages (iWork 2009). When I try to type any text, the computer just "dings" at me and types nothing.

Probably you have opened a blank Layout template which requires a Textbox for you to type into.
Open a blank Word Processing template instead. The two types are listed in the Sidebar of the Template Chooser.
