Recovering my PC iTunes Library following a PC Crash

Following a recent disasterous crash on my PC and my need to reinstall Windows XP I have lost my whole music library.
Fortunately I automatically synced the Library to both my iPod and iPhones so am still able to enjoy.
However I had no back up saved so my PC is bereft of all my music.
I had assumed that following the next sync all my music would be reocovered on the PC.
As my library comprised mostly albums from CD's and music captured from tapes and vynil it is both highly valued and not easily replaceable. Has anyone found out how to recover from this situation.
I would prefer to use an Apple approved solution. Help please.

My wife experienced the exact same problem, except she only has an iPod.  The library that existed on her old system is toast and every time she tries to sync with her new 'build' it says she'll loose all her music if she continues.  I did some poking around and found some information (that while maybe not approved) will let you get the music off the iPod. (I haven't been able to get it to work on my iPhone, but then I don't really need it to.)
Music on the iPod is stored in a hidden location on the device.  To access this 'location' you'll need to modify your folder settings.
For Windows Users:
Set your iPod to be used in Disk Mode by going to the info page in iTunes while your iPod is connected.
If iTunes asks you to sync select "Cancel" as allowing the sync to continue will erase all the music on your device.
Once you've verified that the iPod is in Disk Mode, open the "Start" menu and select "My Computer."
In the window that opens, select "Folder Options" from the "Tools" menu.  For Windows 7 users click Organize and then choose Folder and Search Options...
On the "View" tab of "Folder Options," scroll down (if necessary) and select the Radio Button next to "Show Hidden Files and Folders," then click the "Apply" button to save your choice
Now Select the "Apply to Folders button and then click OK to close the window.
In the "My Computer" window, search for your iPod.  You may have to press the F5 key to refresh the window.  The drive letter for the iPod will vary depending on how many other devices you have in your system.
When the iPod appears, double-click on it's icon to reveal its contents.
You should see several folders.  One of them should be named "iPod_Control." It will be a lighter shade than the other folders (indicating that it is hidden.)
Open this folder and look for another folder named "Music."
Copy the "Music" folder to a location on your hard drive.  You can just "left click and drag" the folder to your hard-drive icon and release the mouse.
The time it takes to copy the folder will depend on the size of the music repository on your device.
When the copy is complete, re-open iTunes, and select "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu
Open "Advanced" tab, and check the box to "Keep iTunes Music folder organized."  This setting will make iTunes copy music files to your library when they are added and keep them organized
Finally, from the iTunes "File" menu, choose the option to "Add Folder to Library".  You will see a dialog box that prompts you to navigate to the "Music" folder you copied. When you are there, select the folder and click "OK".  The transfer of the music files from your iPod will begin and now you're on your way to restoring your library
For Mac Users:
There are free programs available for download at www.podtomac.com that allow you to transferring your iPod / iPhone content a breeze.
Cheers

  • TS1967 When trying to recover a lost iTunes library file, the programme moved all the normal contents of iTunes folder to the desktop. Now what must I do?

When trying to recover a lost iTunes library file, the programme moved all the normal contents of iTunes folder to the desktop. Now what must I do? There is no iTunes Library.itl file. On the desktop it is labelled iTunes Library.xml. Several others files have appeared there too including iTunes Music Library.xml
Before I can use the programme is it necessary to take another step?
    Thanks for advice.

Don't worry. I'm all for caution. I guess I should have asked a little more about what steps you took while trying to recover your lost library?
The permissions thing may be a red herring, but if there is a problem with file access rights to the designated media folder iTunes has been known to place files on the desktop instead since it can access this location. The most common cause for such problems is working with a folder on an NTFS drive via a differnt account or on a different computer. In the normal course of events folders created inside user profiles have limited rights for other users.
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
Normally the iTunes folder will be created at <User's Music>\iTunes with the media folder inside it. The library files should all appear in the same place so your comment about there not being an iTunes Library.itl file is confusing. Is it just the case that the .itl extension is hidden? The two .xml files makes sense from the above and indicates that the active library is not in <User's Music>\iTunes, but you have a recovered file from when it was.
If, in fact, the situation is that your desktop is acting as the main iTunes folder, and contains the library file, Album Artwork, iTunes Media and (optionally) Previous iTunes Libraries folders, with all other content being inside the iTunes Media folder, then it should be relativly easy to rearrange your into the correct shape and move them to the correct location.
If things are more complex, with something other than a library folder containing a media folder, then reestablishing the normal order is more complicated. The iTunes consolidate function is used to bring copies of files stored outside of the media folder into the media folder. It may sometimes be needed as part of the process of tidying up, however it leaves behind originals. There are circumstances where there isn't room for two complete sets of the media files on the same drive which is why I suggested the script might be useful as it produces the same results for the library without leaving the originals for manual clear up.
I think before you do anything however, we should get a clearer picture of exactly what is where. Could you perhaps take a screenshot of the desktop and post it here? Take a look at this post on making a split library portable. The same techniques I outline there can be used to lick your library into shape, it is just a question of working out which to use in which order for the best effect.

  • I have lost my previous itunes library and the content is no longer on my ipod touch.  How do I recover my previous itunes library?  I have already tried the backup but because the content was erased from my ipod that did not work.

I have lost my previous itunes library content after atempting to sync my ipod.  Is there any way that apple can provide me with a history restore for an itunes library?

if you have all the songs still on your ipod you can put them back on your computer from the ipod... just DONT LET ITUNES SYNC WITH YOU IPOD when you plug it back in. change the settings to manual control for syncing ipods or your itunes will delete all of them. i dont know what to do for the unchecked songs... i had a similar situation and i used a mac program to take the songs off of my ipod. hope this helps.. just google for an application that will let ya take songs off the ipod.

  • Recovering a damaged iTunes library

So one day I open iTunes to discover a huge chunk of my music missing. I was missing about 1500 songs, and apparantly it rolled back to about 3 months ago. I'm very orderly with my music, and I have spent countless hours organizing the music information, ratings, etc. I still have the damaged iTunes library file, but of course it doesn't work. If worst comes to worse I'll buy one of those applications that copy the iPod data to iTunes, but if there's another way, please help me out.
And what the **** caused this? The only thing I could think of that could cause it was me installing the Ruckes music player.

theres a program that you can download i think its called music rescue. you plug your ipod in and it will download all the songs back on to your computer. you might lose your ratings but it saved my *** before once when i lost all my music. hope this helps.

  • How to recover from an "iTunes Library Damaged" error message?

When I looged on this morning, I recevied an error messages saying that my iTunes library was damaged. It asked if I wanted to save a "(DAMAGED)" version of the library. I said yes, and now iTunes comes up blank...no songs, no playlists, nothing. I have located the file marked (DAMAGED) but I can't figure out how to get my library to load up in iTunes with all my playlists, etc. Anyone help me...My iPods/iTunes for Dummies Book and The iTunes for Windows Book just aren't helping.
I don't want to hook my iPod up in fear of losing all my songs on it.
Anyone have ideas on how to fix this...hoping not to have to load all the songs 1 by 1, as that would hurt!

  • Restoring iTunes library after hard disk crash and replacement

My iTunes library was on my hard drive which crashed and died last week. I now have a new hard drive. My iPod 80gb was up to date before the new hard drive was installed... can I copy the content of the iPod back to the new hard drive... HOW???
Alternatively I have a backup of my old hard drive (which included the "My Music/iTunes" folders... can I restore from there?... I tried simply copying files which didn't work. I also tried "Add folder" from iTunes, it kind of worked but many of the tunes were grayed out and had a download icon next to them, even though they were previously ripped from CDs or bought through iTunes.
    what should I do???

    Hey Dave W RI,
Perhaps, it would be more helpful, for you to search this forum for terms like recover music, or something related.
That would return threads, from others, that have had this same question.
    Hope this helps,

  • Trying to Import my iTunes Library Retrieved from a Crashed Mac on my New Mac

    Hi all,
My old mac laptop crashed and I had the contents of it transferred to my new MacBookPro laptop. My itunes folder from the old mac laptop is now on my new laptop's desktop but I can't find a way to import my old itunes library to the new one. Which of the old files do I have to move and where, please? Thanks in advance for your help.
    Al
My old itunes folder's content reads like this:
    -itunes:
    -album artwork
      cache
       cloud
       download
    -iTunes Library 2011-12-28.itl
    -iTunes Library 2012-07-25.itl
    -iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    -iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    -iTunes Library.itl
    -iTunes Media
    - iTunes Music Library.xml

Go into iTunes prefs>Advanced - check that the path to your iTunes is correct.
It should look similar to this - /users/YOUR ACCOUNT/Music/itunes/itunes music - if the path is not correct then select the 'change' option and point the way.
If you have the ! Next to the tunes then the path is incorrect. This doesn't mean that the files are missing - just iTunes cannot find the way - iTunes is a data base manager and as such can lose track if things are moved in the Finder.

  • Restoring iTunes library after hard drive crash

The hard drive on my Macbook pro (mid-2009) crashed. I took it to the genius bar for a diagnostic. The drive was physically fine so they wiped it and reinstalled Mavericks, which is now running 10.9.4. I am restoring user files from Time Machine individually to keep things clean. Hooray!
I'm now running iTunes 10.3.1. Years ago, I placed the iTunes library in Users>Shared on the hard drive, so my wife could access the files when she logged in. We don't need to do that now, so today I dragged all the music files from Time Machine to the "Music" section on the iTunes window.
They seem to have installed and indexed fine, but I lost some of the original data--like date added and numbers of plays--which would be nice to have. (Then all now read as installed today with zero plays.) My playlists are all gone as well; I'd like to have them back.
Is there any way to restore the music so those things stay intact, by basically making my library the way it was?
I considered dragging the entire set of folders over from the Shared section of Time Machine, but was afraid the music would not index, and the folder structure and nomenclature was different (for example, it had iTunes Music instead of iTunes media and there were a couple other anomalies). I imagine this is because the Shared library was set up under a different version of iTunes.
I hope this doesn't further complicate things but my user name was changed at the genius bar (from what it was prior to crash); they added my last name to my user name. I didn't notice till I got home. So far I have had no trouble accessing the files I have dragged in (Numbers, Word, etc), but don't know if the permissions on the music files might be affected.
    All help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Keeping song data in iTunes library after hard drive crash

I have an iPhone 3GS that I used to sync with iTunes on my Windows PC. Then the hard drive on that PC crashed, but fortunately I had made a backup of my entire iTunes library on an external drive. Now I have a new Windows PC that I want to transfer my music to so I can sync it with the iPhone as before.
However, since the crash I have continued to listen to music on my iPhone, so the play counts, song ratings etc in the backup copy of my library will be out of date. I thought that simply copying the backup library onto my new PC would allow my iPhone to sync with it as if nothing happened (so that the iPhone would update the song data on iTunes on my computer), but when I ticked the box to sync music, it warned me that it was going to do an "erase and sync". As I understand it, that means it scrubs the music off my iPhone together with its data, and then replaces it with the rebuilt library.
Is it possible to persuade the iPhone to recognise the rebuilt library as the one it is allowed to sync to (without erasing its own library first)? Or even just copy the iPhone's song data to the computer (with or without the song files themselves) and then restore from that once the iPhone has done its erase & sync?
    Thanks in advance.

Wonderful! The iPhone recognised its own library and synced happily, updating the iTunes metadata as I wanted.
Rebuilding the library took a bit longer because the backup wasn't consolidated and the library didn't know where to find some of my music, but it was sorted with a bit of file jiggling. Now the two devices are getting on like best friends. Many thanks for your help.

  • Retrieving content for iTunes library after hard drive crash

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's encountered this situation, but i couldn't find a decent answer anywhere. My HDD crashed, but i recovered all my documents, together with all iTunes documented files (including songs). I didn't lose any data. The problem is that iTunes can't just read copy pasted files (to avoid the spread of bought iTunes songs/apps). How can i get all those songs back in there?
    1) I've still got everything on my iPod, but my iPod won't even be recognised with the name i've given it. Synchronising my iPod is out of the question...
    2) I've got screenshots of files i found in the back-up document files
    http://s720.photobucket.com/albums/ww201/Ollii/Computer%20Info%20Screens/
    3) I can upload every song back again, but that takes ages. And I would like to have my apps back too
    Thank you in advance

I built a new computer and I copied and pasted the entire itunes file that was in my music for XP to the music file in win 7. After it was done I downloaded itunes agreed to all the fun stuff and it found everything when i opened it. To play the purchased music I need to sign in to my account. After that everything worked great with no problems and it was like it never moved. As for your apps I still live in the stone age with an 80G ipod and an apple TV. So good luck with that but I do not see a problem with that as well. For any purchase from apple you have a total of 5 computers to use with you account. So I hope you were able to unauth. the old hard drive. If not you have to rest you count which can only be done 1X a year.

  • I'm trying to move 2 different iTunes library's (my PC crashed) from an iPod and iPod Touch to my iMac via a 3rd party app. Will I be able to use this app on the 2 new administrator accounts that I will set up?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! The app I'm thinking of using cost $35 and is supposed to move everything from the device to my imac, but will each administrator acct be able to use it? Is there another way?

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.
