Recovery doesn't see old archivelog backups

I am doing weekly full backups
backup
as compressed backupset
channel=disk1
full
database
include current controlfile
plus archivelog
delete all input;
Point-in-time recovery worked fine using:
set until scn $1 ;
restore database;
recover database delete archivelog;
release channel c1;
alter database open resetlogs;
Untill today, when I tried recovering using backupset that is two weeks old.
Restore database worked fine. But media recovery failed with errors like this:
RMAN-03002: failure of recover command at 09/28/2006 21:06:58
RMAN-06053: unable to perform media recovery because of missing log
RMAN-06025: no backup of log thread 1 seq 10992 lowscn 200869768 found to restore
RMAN-06025: no backup of log thread 1 seq 10991 lowscn 200868902 found to restore
database recovery was unable to find archivelog backups.
What was confusing is that 'list backup' would show me the missing backups as available:
BS Key Size Device Type Elapsed Time Completion Time
1653 497.50K DISK 00:00:01 17-SEP-06
BP Key: 1868 Status: AVAILABLE Compressed: YES Tag: TAG2006_09_17

List of Archived Logs in backup set 1653
Thrd Seq Low SCN Low Time Next SCN Next Time
1 10992 200869768 17-SEP-06 200870470 17-SEP-06
I tried all what I could think of to get rman to see those backups.
Finally, I changed computer system time to two weeks ago - and recovery worked !
Why is recovery ignoring old archivelog backups ? How to make recovery see those old files ? Is there a more elegant way to recover to a point in time that doesn't require me to change computer clock ? Using 'set until scn' is the standard way I do it but it seems to work only within a certain time frame.

I don't think that's the problem. I use backupsets to create a copy of database on another machine. So, I never (knock on the wood) do recovery of the database that is being backed up.
This is how the script looks like:
set dbid 123123;
startup nomount
run
allocate channel c1 device type disk;
restore controlfile from autobackup maxdays = 100;
alter database mount;
set until scn 7878787;
restore database;
recover database delete archivelog; -- it fails when it gets to this phase, complaining about missing files
release channel c1;
alter database open resetlogs;
}

    I have a brand new iMac - my Time Capsule doesn't see my backup, it sees my Mac Book Pro backup but not old iMac (which is broklen, hence new one from Apple). I can see old iMac data is there through browser but not seen by Migrate assistant. Any ideas?

    Look at manual resstore methods.. I would be careful migrating to a later OS.

  • Rescue and recovery doesn't see my backup

    I installed windows 7 a few days ago, I had vista, but I'm having some problems. the first
    one is system migration assistant. I asked it to transfer my music folder and my passwords
    from the password manager, which it both didn't. it ust didn't transfer them. luckily, I made
    a backup before starting this business, but I can't see it when I open rescue and recovery!
    the backup is on an external USB hard drive. when I open Rescue and Recovery, advanced
    mode, set prefferred backup location to USB, start recovery and then list the backups, nothing is shown.
    one more thing, if I was able to see the backup, getting back my music wouldn't be that much
    of a trouble, but I think getting back my passwords will be more difficult. what's the easiest way
    of getting back my passwords if I am able to see the backup?
    when I open the RRbackups folder on the drive, there is a folder \RRbackups\Documents and Settings\Daniel Bakker\AppData\Roaming\Lenovo\Client Security Solution,
    which contains a .pwm file, a file from which I suppose it holds the password data. so I thought, let's use the import function from the
    password manager. but then of course it asks for the password which the file is encrypted with.
    the password isn't my windows password, but is there any way to find out with which password it is encrypted?

    I've seen some versions of R&R refuse to show backups when their total space taken was at or near the limit set in R&R. In advanced mode, set the limit as high as possible and see if they appear.
    This is if you are working from the installed R&R. If you're running from a rcovery CD, never mind...

  • Airport utility v6 doesn't see old airport extreme 1st ten

    Using new version 6 Airport Utility, does not see older Airport Extreme (1st gen) that is on my network.  It sees my newer AP extreme and shows the ID for old machine yet I can't get to it to change configuration.

    You will need to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion to be able to access and make changes to any of the older AirPort products. AirPort Utility 6.0 only works with newer "n" devices.
    You can use the more functional AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure all of your AirPorts...old or new.
    Just keep both versions on your Mac and use the one that you want.

  • Time Machine doesn't see user library backups

    Greeting experts,
    I updated to Yosemite 10.10.2 yesterday. After restart, the Mac would log me off within a minute of logging on. So I did a clean install (after pram zapping and disk repairing). The iMac (intel) worked normally after the clean install. So I started restoring files (music, photos, etc.).
    When I enter Time Machine, I cannot navigate back in time to any previous snapshot (all the date lines are red on the calendar). I've used Finder preferences to make the user library visible on the Macintosh HD but my user library in Time Machine remains hidden. I've read and tried several suggestions in this forum, including using the Terminal to issue commands to make the user library visible, to inherit the backup, etc. but nothing has worked.
    I've been able to restore my photographs to iPhoto and music to iTunes simply by dragging the folders from the last Time Machine snapshot prior to upgrading to 10.10.2.
    What I REALLY need is to access my user library on Time Machine and grab my Thunderbird files (saved mail, etc.) but I can't find a way to make my user library visible.
    Any suggestions are really appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Don

    Open Finder and navigate to your User home folder. In the right pane, right click in an open area and click View Options or select View options from the View menu bar. At the bottom of the View Options screen should be a checkbox for Show Library Folder. Check it and your user Library should show up in Finder along with your other Home folders. Then, after opening Library, you should be able to Enter Time Machine and navigate to the point in time you want to browse your user Library

  • Grrrr. Restoring from backup. Doesn't see most recent backups as "complete"

    Terribly frustrating. Logic board went out on our newish mac mini. While it's in the shop I'm trying to restore the most recent backup to another external HD that I can startup from. The latest backup was completed moments before the mini crashed, but when I go to restore, it shows the most recent "complete" backup was done back in January. What!!! I have been able to get at the important files I need through the Finder, but that's not going to cut it. I want a complete restore of the system.
    1) What Time Machine settings did I have wrong that could have caused this?
    2) What can I do to prevent this from happening again?
    3) Am I going to be able to get into my latest backup?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

    Hi, and welcome to the forums. (Not the best way to start, is it?)
    Very carefully, look at the most recent backup folder on the TM disk (don't change or delete anything).
    As you probably know, it's inside the folder that has the same name as the computer it's from, and should be at the bottom.
    It should be named with the date and time. If it has ".inProgress" at the end, it means it's not complete; TM hadn't quite finished with it. If so, you can't do anything with it.
    It's also possible the disk was corrupted when the logic board blew. If OSX didn't get a chance to "close it out" properly (via the normal eject process), there's no telling what happened.
    I'd start with a +Repair Disk+ (and maybe even +Repair Permissions+ ). That might help.
    And you should be able to browse the backups from another Mac running Leopard, via the (badly named) +Browse Other Time Machine Disks+ option. That's available either while holding down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your menubar, or control-clicking (right-clicking) the TM icon in the Dock. This won't show any ".inProgress" files either.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.3 on Win7 doesn't see a backup on external USB hard drive - Model W510

    I've run the Rescue and Recovery utility within Windows 7 on two different external USB hard drives thinking that maybe it was a usb drive issue.  When I open the R And R utility in expert mode I can see that both backups exist on their respective drives.  I planned on updating my hard drive so I made a full hd backup and the R&R startup disc to boot the laptop from.  The bios recognizes either external hard drive at boot with no problems.  It shows the names and "+" sign next to drives.  So I booted the drive at startup off the DVD drive with the R&R startup disc after I was sure that the bios recognized either external drives.  Then when I choose a "Full" restore is of course asks me if I want to use hd, cd/dvd, or external usb drive which I choose the later.  It then should show me the backup that I created earlier just as it did when I ran the utility from the Win7 environment so I can choose it to restore from.  But I get a blank box showing no backups when I run the 4.3 R&R Startup disc.  Again if I boot to Win7 and go into the R&R utility I can see the backup on the exact same USB external drive.  Then boot off the CD startup recovery disc and it shows NO BACKUP!  Help please!  I want to shelf my old hard drive "as is" and create the Restore onto the new hard drive but the utility isn't working for me.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hmmm,
    Seems like that _should_ work.  Here's a way you might be able to finesse it:  go to the advanced R&R menu in Win 7 and create rescue media on your USB drive.  It's essentially the same process as creating the CD - it makes the USB drive bootable and puts a copy of R&R there.
    There _should_ be an option to "preserve existing data" but be prepared to lose your existing backup and make it again.
    Then just boot the external USB drive and see if R&R recognizes a backup image on the same drive from which you booted.
    That's the way I usually migrate to new drives.  Maybe it will get around your mysterious problem.

  • How do I delete my old iPhone backup since I can not back up my new phone.  Will I lose any pictures?  Can you ever see what is actually on the cloud? Last, how do I delete the old iPhone back up.  Thanks, been trying to do this for a long time.

    I want to delete my old iPhone backup since I can not back up my new phone.  Will I lose any pictures?  Can you ever see what is actually on the cloud? Last, how do I delete the old iPhone back up.  Thanks, been trying to do this for a long time.

    Deleting the backup only permanently deletes the backup from iCloud.  It doesn't do anything to the data currently in your account or on your devices.  To delete it, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of the device that you want to delete the backup for, then tap Delete Backup.
    You can't see anything in an iCloud backup, if that's want you're asking.  You can only restore it to your device.  You can, of course, see your other iCloud data.

  • Migration Assistant problem? : New iMac's iTunes doesn't see the catalog or playlist of my old Mac's songs on an external drive

    So I just migrated from a 10.7.5 iMac 27" from 2009 to 10.9.4 on a 2013 27" iMac with Fusion Drive.
    I don't use Time Machine. There are no backups involved here.
    Used Ethernet. Only took 20 hours... (BTW, it stayed on "less than 1 minute left" for like 12 hours but luckily I was away and just left it going in hopes it would work... and it did!)
    Anyway, back on my OLD iMac, I kept all of my songs on an external drive because my internal drive was too small. So iTunes looked at that drive for the music it was playing. I turned that drive off, even disconnected it, during the migration process because I thought it was confusing it during the first attempt which took 10 hours and nothing happened.
    So now it worked, finally. On my new iMac, running Mavericks, I now have two user accounts... the one that was set up when I started the computer the first time, and the new one that transferred over via Migration Assistant. No problem. I can live with that. The only thing is, I would still think the old XML files and library stuff would migrate over... but iTunes doesn't see it. When I open up iTunes, in *either* account, iTunes behaves as if it's brand new. Repeat: the old and new account on the new iMac, both, do not see an old iTunes library which IS on the old iMac. Only the music is on the external drive from what I understand.
    I've done this before so I know it's possible. I remember upgrading a long time ago and got iTunes to see my old library... even though some of the music was no longer there. It just puts "!" marks wherever there is no link. I was hoping that that's what I would find when I launched iTunes, but no luck. Even connecting the old hard drive to the new Mac (via USB) doesn't make iTunes all of a sudden "see" the old library. That data doesn't seem to be there. It didn't transfer over. Did it not transfer over because the songs weren't on the internal volume? Should I have left my external hard drive on?
    So.... now that I've spent almost 3 days total trying to get this to work, and everything is running... I don't want to have to start over in order to get iTunes to work.  Is there a way I can just drag over some XML files or something from the old computer? I don't want to lose all of the ratings and personal notes and everything.
    I should add also that I have like only four songs I've ever actually bought through iTunes. I'm still a bit old fashioned and buy CDs and rip them to Apple Lossless. So I hope it's not an authorization / reauthorization issue because I have like 1400 albums ripped.
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    --Jeff

    iTunes does not use the .xml it uses the .itl
    If you are sure your old library file migrated across (does the file size and modification dates suggest it has?) start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the .itl file to get it to use that one.

  • TM doesn't see its backup after migrating to new iMac and restoring system.

    TM doesn't see its backup even though it still exists on the HD. I just migrated to a new iMac. After using OS X disc to 'Restore System From Backup' with TM backup it was showing the latest backup attempt had failed. The same disk was highlighted under TM Preferences too. But once I reset it TM began to make a new backup under a new folder/computer name (adding a number to the end). Is there a way to make TM see the existing BU and continue on?

    I'll try to recall to the best of my memory what I did... It's been stressful, frustrating, trying to deal with it.
    Computers:
    1) iMac6,1 (Late 2006) Intel 2.16 GHz Nvidia OS X 10.5.6
    2) iMac8,1 (Early 2008) Intel 2.8 GHz ATI OS X 10.5.4
    Perform final backup of iMac #1 with TM and SuperDuper!
    Shut down and disconnect.
    Hook up iMac #2 and power up.
    After OS X intro select 'Transfer from another Mac' with Set Up Assistant (note: this was from the SD! backup).
    Everything was selected for transfer; Users, Apps, Network,..etc. (I assumed it would update OS X too).
    Transfer complete.
    Restart.
    Log in.*
    * I have both Admin and User account. I noticed things weren't performance was off; log in was slow (Menu Bar items took longer to display, clock too), and generally overall apps,..etc seemed slow. Apps were asking for license and reg info too.
    Second attempt (restore system from TM backup):
    Startup from OS X 10.5.6 disc.
    Erase HD with DU.
    Select 'Restore System from Backup'.
    Select TM backup.
    After that completed, restart computer.
    And that brings us to now. Well, sort of.
    So what is the proper way to migrate as it were from between two different Intel iMac's? I have to assume I transfered over system files that caused a conflict with the new iMac's HW, correct? What can I do now? I've already performed new backups of both SD! and TM. I didn't think it mattered since either way the backups come from my old system. I'm guessing I should have updated OS X first on the new iMac and only selected User files, Apps, Network settings,.. etc., for transfer, or maybe installed apps fresh. I thought I was doing it correctly.
    The new iMac still seems off with performance to me. I've tried performing multiple 'Repair Disk Permissions' too. There are about 32 differing permissions but DU doesn't seem able to repair them as they come up again and again. Here are some examples;
    2009-05-15 09:23:47 -0700: Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .

    My final attempt to straighten this out is to install from OS X disc fresh (erase/install). Transfer only User files, Network settings, anything pertinent to my Users (email, browser, keychain,..),... and nothing else. Reinstall 3rd-Party Apps. I had to do this before after updating from Tiger to Leopard because it didn't take well.
    Any help/insight appreciated.

  • Help: Can no longer see old time machine backups

    Hello everyone and thank you for your help.
    I have two computers, a Power Mac G5 tower and a Mac Book Pro both backing up using time machine to a USB drive connected to my Time Capsule. Previously my backup drive was connected via usb to my airport extreme, however when I moved the drive my Power Mac G5 stopped being able to see its old backups. However my Mac Book Pro can still see its backups. Both have always connected via WIFI for backups.
    Also my G5 tower takes a very long time to "prepare" its backups (usually much longer than 30 minutes) while my mac book pro does not, any insight into why this might be?

    Dude, was having the same problem; just saw this solution in the FAQ listed below you. It worked for me, just hold down the Option key while you click on the TM button and select "Other backups".
    I had the same setup as you, an external drive that's been used as both an Airport disk and a locally mounted drive. TM gets confused when you switch it up like that.
    17. What if I can't see my backups, or the Backups for a different Mac, via Enter Time Machine ?
    TM keeps the backups for each Mac separate, and normally only shows the ones for the Mac it's running on, even if there are other Macs' backups on the same disk/partition.
    Also, sometimes TM will start a new "sequence" of backups, as if they were from a different Mac.
    To see these "other" backups, you need the (badly named) Browse Other Time Machine Disks option. It's available by holding down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar, or by control-clicking (right-clicking) the TM icon in your Dock.
    You'll see a selection screen showing all the disks/partitions that have TM backups on them. Select the one you want, and you'll be taken to the normal TM "Star Wars" interface, where you should see all the backups on that disk/partition.

  • Get time machine to see old backups

    Hi all,
    recently i had a problem that resulted in having to restore from a time machine backup. Since then i have been unable to see my previous backups within time machine
    The sparse bundle is still intact, i have not allowed it to backup knowing that it will more than likely nuke my old backups.
    So far i have tried:
    - removing and reselecting the time capsule
    - removing com.apple.timemachine.plist
    - inheriting the existing sparsebundle.
    any help on this would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

    While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
