RED RAW 4k footage not scaling in SG

Hi Folks,
Wondering if anyone has seen an issue within SpeedGrade CC whereby RED RAW material isn't showing / scaling 100% of the image within a timeline?
I.e. we can only see a centre portion of the image, the original sequence in Premiere was 2k.
Any help appreciated!!
Thanks
Ken

Thanks Fran,
Our grader is currently on the PC so I can't get a grab, but what's happening is simply that 4k / 5k RED RAW images are being cropped, so we only see about half the image from the centre out. This is a 2k timeline.
In Premiere, you can set 'Scale image to frame size' so as to see the entire image, but this option doesn't appear to be available in SpeedGrade.
The PC is a dual 8 core 3.1Ghz with 64Gig ram, 1Tb solid state drive, Sonnet Fusion SAS 24Tb main drive.
Thanks
Ken

  • Editing Red Dragon Raw 6k Footage with Premiere CC and/or CC 2014 - Which is better and what issues should I expect?

    Hi All
    As the title asks;
    1. Are there any known issues when Editing Red Dragon raw 6k footage in Premiere Pro CC/CC14 ?
    2. Which version of the software would be the best choice ? CC/CC 2014 (I have both)
This is my first Red Dragon 6k Project in premiere CC software and although I have used CC extensively since its release  I am working with a tight turnaround so making sure I have as much info as possible to troubleshoot. (if needed)
This question is directly related to the software and any known issues.  It is not hardware related as we are setup for that side of things with very fast SSD -> Thunderbolt storage and powerful machines.
Any info or experiences would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Piers

Hi Piers - did you ever get an answer or figure out a good workflow for editing 6K in premiere?
If so, i'd appreciate you sharing what you've learned.
    Thanks!

  • Red Flashes in footage

    Hello All,
I'm having an issue where footage has completely random frames that are completely solid red.  I was working with raw MXF wrapped files that are 1080p from a sony F5 so I thought it I might need to transcode.  So I transcoded everything to Pro Res 422 (LT).  The flashes are still there but in different places in the clip.  The frames that were competely red are now fine but other frames in the clip are now solid red.  Upon re-transcoding the exact same clips the red frame are always in different seemingly random places in the clip.  Ranging from 1-5 flashes per clip for all my footage.  I imagine I'm dealing with some form of corrruption here but the frames that are lost or corrupted should theoretically be consistent right?  How could frames that are lost magically reappear upon re-transcoding?  I'm a bit stumped.  The raws are stored in DMG's. This a problem prevelent throughout the footage not just one card.  (There are 5 dmg's from 5 transfers from SxS cards.  Not sure how many cards were used on set.  Help is much appreciated.  I was transcoding in Media Encoder.   Premiere CC 2014 8.0.0   Thanks.

I've had this problem too on a PC using AVCHD video.   I tried transcoding it in Prelude, which helped but I still had one instance of it happening.  I don't recall this ever happening until recently.
I have 2 cameras, a Panasonic HMC150 and an AF100.  I've got the red-frame problem twice and both times it was with the af100 shooting in interlaced mode (its never happened in progressive.  Might be a coinsidence, don't know for sure.

  • Red RAW (R3D) renaming

I'm ingesting Red RAW (R3D) files directly from the Red Mag (memory card). The default file names on ingest is the root folder on the memory card so all files gets the same name. The original filenames on the card is nice since they start with camera ID + reel number + underscore + camera position + take number + underscore + some code to make it unique. I would ideally like to name the ingested files to the first part of the filename (include the take number) but if that's not possible then I would be OK with just keeping the full filename.
I tried to create file rename preset in Prelude CC where I chose Filename but it don't work. Even with this preset it still use the root folder name for all files ingested.
Is it a way for me to fix this or is this a bug that is expected to get fixed?

    Hi Micheal
First, thanks for contacting me. I'm very impressed with Adobe's customer
service and development team's interaction with users, especially after
    switching to CC.
Let me give some context, because I think my firm is representative of a
    lot of your users.
I'm a DoP and editor for a small production and post house, and we operate
a RED camera. Our shoots are tight on time and budget, with a fast turn
around. A typical shoot might be a corporate video, shooting interviews in
the morning and b-roll in the afternoon, with a small crew.
So I need a solution where as DoP I can set up a laptop DIT station, (maybe
in a vehicle), with 2 portable usb3 drives connected to a macbook, and hand
off cards to a 1st AC/2nd AC, who may not be 100% familiar with the
software. I need to be able to tell him or her 'put this card in the
reader, hit this button, and then when the green light pops up, switch
cards and repeat', and be 100% sure that the clips are where I want them,
and see at a glance when things are done, when I'm concentrating on 10
    other things.
    So on that basis:
    Ingest:
    Bins:
It needs to be 100% clear which bins clips are going into. The interface
should reflect this. At the moment the clips go into the most recently
selected bin. This should be better highlighted. Maybe at the top of the
screen it should show the currently selected bin. Maybe the project window
should work more like PP. Either way, if I'm working in a bin hierarchy
called 'Day 1/Card 1' that where I want my clips to go, and it to be
clearer. Maybe the option of an automatic bin generator, eg bins are
created on ingest based on name/date/camera etc..
    Folders:
I'd love presets in the ingest window.
For example preset 'RED multi-day shoot 01' has the following attributes:
Primary ingest: All clips are ingested into a folder called: [project
    name]/[date]/[REDMAG NAME]
Secondary ingest: All clips are ingested into a folder called: BACKUP
    /[date]/[REDMAG NAME]
So that the folders can be named by metadata, eg: date ingested, date shot,
date shot and card number..... etc.
For example, I worked on a shoot the other day, where we were working with
RED and 5D. Two camera crews, 1 laptop. We wanted the 5D footage to go into
the same drives but different folders. It would have been great to have 1
preset for the 5D and 1 for RED,. so that we could just switch easily
    between them.
Also auto selecting all the clips on the drive as default. It should be an
option that I stick a Redmag into the redmag reader, and prelude
automatically finds the footage and ingests in into the drives/folders I've
setup, with the right folders, the clips renamed in the project correctly,
with clips spanning dealt with correctly, and metadata populated, into the
pre-selected bins, with a cherry on top.
    During ingest:
For me this next part is key. Currently, I point the ingest dialogue to the
drives I want, click go and I'm presented with...... a slow moving
    percentage bar.
My Director calls out ' how long till we've finished offloading?', and I
    say....'umm'
I have 2 redmag readers connected to the laptop. I don't want to have to
wait for 1 to finish ingesting before starting the other one.  Currently,
if I start an additional ingest, my bar just jumps from 90% to 15%. I don't
know when the first card is done, or if it's safe to remove.
    So, I'd like to see:
A big indication 'INGESTING' ie 'DON"T TOUCH ANYTHING INTERNS!!'
Data rates and an estimated time.
    Some kind of visible queue.
The option to pause cards, or change the priority.
Knowing where my bottleneck is - which drives are ingesting fast or slow
(maybe some kind of traffic-light in indicator?).
Is the secondary destination copying from the primary or from the original
    card?
Deferred transcoding - transcoding later in the background while I'm
    sleeping at the hotel.
And finally a big green tick/light when a card has been ingested, and
    checksum verified, and automatic ejection!!
    A few less important extras:
Recognition of other file types eg Canon RAW stills.
Easier to use metadata fields (eg option to add GPS info, or weather info
to the clips, or to mark each clip with INT/EXT. Even to add crew names to
    the clip).
Basic color correction (eg red Source settings/RED looks).
GPU acceleration like the new REDCINE-X would be great, but I'm sure this
will happen across the Premiere and Prelude eventually)
(Secondary note: Ideally I'd like a metadata/keyword based workflow a
little bit closer to FCP X, through from Prelude to PP. I'd love to have a
PA with some time on their hands on set start keywording clips so I can
search later for all clips with people in them, or all clips shot on a
certain lens, bet that's a bit outside the scope of this request.
Lightroom is pretty good at some of this (auto-ingest, but not showing
accurate transfer rates/times). Also look at Double Data https://www.
doubledata.biz/ I'm reluctant to take food out of their mouths, but I lot
of the functionality I'd like is there. I'd just use Double Data, but I
like the idea of being able to build bins and do rough cuts in Prelude on
the plane home, or in a van on the way back from the shoot. And as I said,
I love the keywording workflow in FCPX. For all those guys got wrong, they
made a LOT of smart innovations.
Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to read and consider my
suggestions (of course that's all they are - some of these functions may
already exist, I'm still learning a lot about the suite - and there may be
much smarter ways to implement them - I'm not a software developer, just an
overworked camera guy who want's an easier life and less ways to mess
    things up)
    Keep up the good work!

  • How to back up projects and raw AVCHD footage???

Please bear with me as I'm really new to digital editing. I'm trying to understand how to work with AVCHD files. Obviously, these are too large to store on my computer once they are ingested; hence, the only option is to store the raw footage. I can burn the raw AVCHD footage to DVD no problem (I use an optional DVD burner that works with my Canon HF-10 camera). Now I'm trying to understand how to work with the system (i.e. save project files for re-editing later on). I'm using a Canon HF-10, and Final Cut Express 4, on a new MacBook Pro.
Here's how I think it might work, but please correct me if I'm wrong:
    1) I begin a new project, ingesting the raw AVCHD footage as I need it.
    2) I edit the footage and save the completed project.
    3) With the project completed, and since the ingested video files are too big to save, I delete the ingested footage from the scratch drive, but still saving the FCE project file (This means that if I open the project file now, I will get a message telling me the media files have gone offline).
    4) I move on to my next project, and carry on ingesting new AVCHD files as I did with the original project.
    Here's where I'm confused...
    5) I later come back to the original project to make a few changes.
QUESTION: Can I simply re-ingest the raw AVCHD footage into the scratch folder and carry on editing the first project? Or will I have problems with Final Cut Express finding the media files??? Or any other problems??
There may be easier ways to do this for someone who understands computers better than I do. I am looking for the simplest solution that will work for me, since I really don't have any technical computer skills/abilities. Will the procedure I described above work???
Thanks so much for your advice!

I'm no pro, and surely not a technical wizard, but what I plan on doing is this:
Back up the raw AVCHD files on DVD (2 copies ideally). Delete them from the camera. Ingest the files into FCE and edit. I won't change the name of the raw media files at any time, to avoid confusing FCE. Once I've finished editing, I'll keep the FCE project file (and any related files) on my hard drive. However, I will delete the huge ingested files from the hard drive (because, no matter how big an external drive you have, to me using 160GB to store two hours of video is nuts). Then, if at a later date I want to re-edit, I'll re-ingest the original files back onto the scratch drive. I figure FCE will read them fine, since they haven't changed; they've merely been removed and replaced. One key point here is that, when ingesting the AVCHD files, you must ingest the complete clips, not just a part of them. That way, nothing about the files (such as the length, starting and finishing points, etc.) will have changed. It may seem a bit awkward, but that's about the only way I, being a technophobe, can understand how to do it without keeping huge files on a hard drive. And, I am only speculating that this will work. At this point, I'm still waiting on the DVD burner that works with my Canon camcorder to arrive in the mail. Then I'll do some testing/experimenting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

  • Can I use a G4 to get raw video footage to a no-firewire aluminum MacBook?

    Hi -
I recently purchased a new aluminum MacBook 2.4Ghz and was shocked to discover the lack of a firewire port. Ok, I should have read the specs more closely before ordering, but I never would have imagined this port being removed (other than from the specialized MacBook Air). As others on this board have said, what were they thinking?!
So I have some questions about downloading raw video footage from a firewire camcorder (forgive any ignorance on my part, I'm new to camcorders and digital movie editing--I've never used iMovie). My goal is basically editing home movies.
I have an old G4 tower (1.5Ghz, 1GB RAM). I also have an external firewire/USB drive. The tower will not run iMovie '08 because the processor is too slow. The iLife 08 disc refuses to even load iMovie on this machine.
I haven't purchased a camcorder yet. I spent a lot of time researching affordable camcorders and had settled on a well-reviewed Canon miniDV, which of course, is firewire. This camera does not come with any software.
Would it work to connect the camera to my G4 via firewire, download the raw footage to my external drive connected to the G4, then move the external drive over to the MacBook, connect it to the MacBook via USB, then import the raw footage to iMovie for editing? I realize the copying over USB would be very slow. I assume I need some type of software for downloading the raw footage to the G4. Since iMovie won't run and the camera has no software, is there some type of utility or shareware that lets you capture raw footage?
Is there a better way I can use my G4 to get raw footage from a firewire camera, and then on to my MacBook? Or will this work at all?
I see that there are a few USB camcorders out there, but they seem to be expensive or don't receive very good reviews, so I'd like to go with the firewire Canon.
Thanks very much for the help with this frustrating issue

Well, never mind. I'm returning the MacBook and buying a previous generation MacBook Pro, which ends up being about $200 more.
Solves my problem, but many folks can't afford the Pro. I'll be commenting at Apple customer feedback about the lack of firewire on the new MacBook.
    Thanks for reading the post.

  • RED Raw color correction with "curves"

    Hi there,
i was wondering, if, when i am color correcting RED Raw files with the effect "curves" (for example) am I working with the full dynamic range of the RAW footage?
Is the range different, if I work in the RAW-Ediotr that i reach through the "interpret footage" dialogue box?
We are trying optimize the workflow for a certain project and would rather use effects on the footage layers, rather than interpret them (yeah, we´re really lazy).
    Thanks a mill,
    Björn

Yes, you are working with the full range from the .r3d files when applying effects in After Effects. In fact, you have more problems with colors clipping if you manipulate things like exposure in the RED settings than if you manipulate them in After Effects with effects (though that is better now than it used to be).
You should work with your project in 32-bpc color to make sure that you're preserving color information all the way through the pipeline.

  • Request for raw ATCHD footage from HF-10/100 owners.

My HF-10 will be here in a few days, and I like to get a minute or so of raw AVCHD footage to experiment with before it arrives. Anyone know where I can download a small sample from?

Is it true that 1 GB of AVCHD = 5 GB of Apple ProRes?
AVCHD is an H64 variant. All these cameras capture at varying quality levels and that determines the data rate of the captured footage. So "1GB of AVCHD" isn't useful in making any comparison without knowing what data rate that produced that 1 GB.
Have you heard of any Apple development to support AVCHD natively?
No, nor would this be the right place for speculation ... but for what its worth I truly dearly hope that Apple's FCP development team are NOT working on native AVCHD support. What a monumental waste of R&D time that would be for a professional app when there are so many professional aspects of the application that need urgent attention. I dare say you'll get your wish though, as Apple seem far more focused on supporting consumers rather than professionals these days with their Pro Apps. And to be fair, its not surprisingly so. By bringing the cost of their Pro Apps within reach of the average consumer then the line is forever blurred between the two, and hundreds of thousands of paying customers baying for support for consumer formats will surely outweigh the tens of thousands of pro's asking for further development of the core toolset. I dare say you will get your wish, mores the pity :/

  • Red Raw Source Settings - multiple settings for one long clip?

    Hello everyone,
I have a timeline with red raw material from Red Scarlet 4K. My DOP wants to make some adjustments in the source settings before Grading. I have some long merged clips (with a lot of changes in light etc.) and I have let`s say two different parts of one of the long clips in the timeline, so I tried to make some changes in the source settings for those two clips in the timeline, but the source settings change the master clip and not only the edited clips in the timeline. Is there a way to make adjustments in the source settings separately for every clip in the timeline?
after I open the source settings it won`t show me the part of the clip which I have in the timeline, but the whole clip from the beginning, so I have to search manually where my clip in the timeline begins, so I know how to adjust it. Is there a way that the source settings show me only the part of the clip (or at least an in and out point) I have in the timeline?

In my experience, each .RDC container can only have a single RMD (settings) file associated with it.
To create multiple settings for the same clip, you would have to duplicate the .RDC folder and its contents for each new setting required.
You would then have to replace each use of that file within your sequence, for each new setting required,
i.e. 3 settings would require original plus 2 duplicate .RDC folders, then you'd have to replace each occurrence of that clip with 1 of 3 files that has the proper new setting.
Now, of course, if you're not grading in PrP, I can't say how the color correction software would know which duplicated files or settings to link to.
No, there is currently no way to open the Settings dialog for a .R3D file and have it match frame to a clip in the sequence. Perhaps you could submit a feature request for that option.

  • Raw DV footage vs. compressed footage...

i would do a search but have no idea where to even start with this one...
when i connect my XL2 to my HD tv with S-Video... the picture quality is outstanding... it fills the entire wide screen with no black bars... and it even looks close to HD...
i've made DVD's before and the quality is definately compromised... that's expected when you're compressing it onto a dvd after some titling etc with DVD studio Pro... but, my question is...
what can i do to maintain the quality of the DV footage throughout the process of creating a dvd?
what type of exporting would retain the fidelity of raw DV footage that i get when i directly connect my camcorder to my tv?

    Hi Lephunk,
As you said DVD quality will never match full resolution of your movie source, however...
First off when you export make sure you export as QT movie self-contained and not QT conversion
as the latter will involve further compression steps.
You should use Compressor to encode your movie not DVDstudio (You can either import a self-contained movie or reference movie to Compressor or send the timeline to Compressor using +export to compressor+ ). This great application offers a number of customizable presets and options which can considerably improve quality. No doubt.
Choose DVD 90 minutes best quality preset, 2-pass VBR and for guidance on best bit rate help yourself with the bitbudjet:

  • Direct Link and Red RAW

Whenever I send Red raw footage from Premiere CC  to Speedgrade CC through Direct Link and try to play with masks to darken areas of the frame, it creates a gradient banding as it I was working with 8 bit footage. See attachment. I tried all presets (linear, smooth, etc)
When I open the same Red raw directly on Speedgrade, I don't have this problem.
    Am I doing anything wrong?
    Cheers,
    R
ps. using the latest version (7.1) on Windows

Something I've just noticed: that happens when I apply Film Convert to the footage before sending it to Speedgrade. When I send the footage to Speedgrade before I apply Film Convert, then I don't have this problem.

  • Few 5DmkII RAW files do not open with Aperture, but OK with other software

Hi, I have two RAW files which I cannot import with Apple Aperture. The files open fine with Canon Digital Photo Professional, Raw Photo Processor and dcraw (and with various programs on my Windows 7 laptop) and I'm able to create TIFF files from the RAW files with every other software.
    Detail about the files:
    A. they are two first frames of burst (used auto bracketing, which takes 3 images in burst mode, to create HDR image)
    B. there is nothing strange in the files, they are normal RAW files and file size is normal as well (other 28.4MB and 32.7MB)
    C. both files process OK in above mentioned softwares and there are no blocks missing from created TIFF images, also preview JPG in the RAW file is OK
    D. Mac OS X Quick view (press spacebar in Finder) and Preview do show these two RAW images well (I assume they use the embedded JPG image)
I have installed all the updates available in "Apple icon" -> "Software update..." function. Therefore I have Apple Aperture version 3.0.2. Computer is MacPro:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
    Memory: 12 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05
    SMC Version (system): 1.25f4
How I can submit the files for Apple to create fix? I searched for Apple Aperture support but there is only this forum, no email address or anything. Do they read this forum?

Some clarifications and answers to your questions:
    First to Tony Gay:
I try the feedback later today even they claim "Please know that while we do read these submissions, we cannot guarantee a personalized response.", which is original reason why I'm why I wrote this question here. The url you provided did not work but this should:
    http://www.apple.com/support/feedback
This is not relevant to sRAW files, I did not change the between camera taking automated bracketed shots the image format for 2 shots to sRAW and took 3rd with RAW, that is not even possible.
I have copied the images from card to hard drive, not trying to read from the card itself. However now you mention tried also from card = exactly same result. Tried desktop (different HD) and external USB and external eSata, all same result.
Get info doesn't show anything wierd for the images. All other 192 RAWs from same shoot were imported with exact same methodology (as well as 60000 images before that).
    Then to gosuk2:
There is no HDR setting in camera, I took the images FOR HDR, but did not use any specific setting, just used 1 1/3 stop bracketing and 2 second times when camera automatically takes 1 1/3 underexposed, correct exposure and 1 1/3 overexposed image (the order of images can naturally be changed via custom function in camera). All this is unrelevant since I shoot quite often HDR with this method (=more than 500 images each month) this way and they have always been fine before these two images.
I see the files in import panel and I the don't use import dublicates setting so that doesn't affect the situation (why it would, Aperture things files are broken).
Again HDR cannot be combined in 5DmkII, it's just automatically shoot 3 bracketed shots.
No I don't get same result no matter what I do, it's just these two files. My other ~5000 HDR bracketed RAWs are importing fine as well as all burst/shots taken in continous shooting mode.
I'm very aware how stacking of images works, but I do not understand relevance to this issue. I can not import the images at all to Apple Aperture, after importing all images Aperture displays dialog saying that following files could not be imported to Aperture, then displays list with both of these files in the list and gives possibility to locate the files in Finder.
I have used Aperture since version 1 and I have 70000 images imported successfully to Aperture. Earlier I have seen this dialog "Aperture could not import image" only after hard drive/card failure. However then images cannot be used in Canon's DPP (Digital Photo Professional) or any other RAW software - now the problem ONLY EXISTS in Aperture all other RAW converters are able to open and process SUCCESSFULLY these images.
So I'm not whining that Aperture is not good, but if it starts to work only part of the images in future and I have to process rest of the images with Canon DPP (that program is really lousy on usability standpoint) then I'm not so happy with Aperture anymore.
Will report here if I get any comments back from Apple through the Feebback tool.

  • When I choose camera raw in bridge I get a Camera Raw editing is not available!

    Hi
When I choose camera raw with the circular icon in the top right hand corner of the bridge CS6 layout I get a warning saying 'Camera Raw editing is not enabled. Camerea Raw editing requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature.' I have tried launching bridge in all the other Adobe products, uninstalling all trial versions from my computer and reinstalling all adobe cloud products, but still this warning comes up and I can't open jpeg and till images with Camera Raw as I did with CC5. Help please!!

I see that this issue was posted in the Bridge forum here http://forums.adobe.com/message/4790707#4790707.
