Region length

Hi folks...
I need to have an audio region trimmed to a specific length. Also, sometimes I need to know exactly how long some audio regions are. What's the best way to get this info. If you're familiar with Cubase, you can simply look at the info bar on top of the arrange window, and it will tell you the exact length of any selected region (in bars, or seconds, or samples or anything).
What's the simplest way to do this in L8?
thanks anyone?!

Well, its not showing me much of anything. Just the sample rate, bit depth and size on disk of the main audio file (not the regions).
I need to know the exact length of my audio regions...I need to know more detials than what the list is showing me...
any other way to know exactly how long a 'region' is?

  • Why are my region lengths changing?

Doing takes for a guitar solo yesterday, I had all my take folders on the same track. When I was doing my comping I noticed that some of the region lengths of takes further along in the song were changed. At first I thought I may have accidendally selected them all when I clicked on the track, but the same thing happened when I made sure I only had one take folder selected.
Is this a Logic 8 glitch, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the added clarifications Noel. Can you perhaps explain to me how the behaviour of the color sampler in the info palette is actually desirable?
Let's look at my example again. When I am trying to make an adjustment and I'm looking at my color sampler targets, I _must_ have my adjustment layer selected. Target #1 is pointed over a white pixel. Regardless of which layer I have selected, that pixel is white. I can't imagine a scenario in which the readout should be anything other than 255,255,255. That's not a feature, that's a design mistake.
If I want to see, in the readout, the value of the background image's pixel, then I should hide the layer that contains that white shape. Then, that pixel is no longer white, and the color sampler readout should reflect that. Makes sense.
If you truly and honestly believe that users are interested in the color that is a result of compositing all the layers below (and including) the currently selected adjustment layer when they are plaing with the adjustment layer controls, then the UI must temporarily hide any layers above that color sampler as soon as I select the adjustment layer. This is the only correct UX design in that scenario - so that the color sampler once again reflects exactly what is "true" - namely the pixel color on the screen that it is sampling.
And if you re-read that last paragraph you will intuitively know that that would be crazy. I mean, there's no way that a user would want to have the UI hide any layers just because he's clicked on the Adjustment Layer - he probably wants to see the adjustment in the context of the entire composition. If he wanted to hide those other layers, he'd do it himself.
I urge you to reconsider this from the perspective of a real-world user and consider logging this as a bug. I just can't see any way that it isn't a mistake.

  • Problem adjusting region length

Hi folks, I'm having trouble getting regions to the precise length of a bar. This has been driving me mad, I just can't figure it out.
I'm chopping up parts of a drum intro to use as a loop, and isolated a 1 bar stretch. I've set the tempo to roughly the right range and selected 'adjust region length to nearest bar/locators'. Only problem is, it doesn't do it accurately, and at the highest resolution zoom setting there is a fractional distance between the end of the region and the barline, even though the start of the region is exactly at the barline. Obviously this messes with the loop synchronising, but I can't get Logic to adjust the length precisely.
Is there something obvious I'm missing here? Any help would be massively appreciated!

Problem solved? It seems playing with the time and pitch machine algorithm fixes this - selected 'percussive' and that seems to do the trick. Not exactly intuitive though Apple!

  • Adjust Region Length without adding silence?

Whenever I adjust a region's length either to the locator's or to the nearest bar, logic automatically adds a few ms of silence to both the beginning and end of the region. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? If not, than this feature is pretty much useless. Please help!

I am adjusting an audio file region using the command "adjust region length to locators" or adjust region length to neareset bar".
I have a four bar phrase whose tempo is slightly slower than my song's tempo. I want to time compress the phrase to match that of my song. I highlight a four bar section in the locators, move the region to start at the same bar as the locators, and then select adjust region length to locators. When I do this, the region becomes the length of the locators, however a couple ms of silence is added to both the beginning and end of the region.

  • Nondestructive region length editing

hi, i'm switching back to Logic after using Ableton Live for the past year and a half or so. for those who are familiar with Live -- i got used to how quickly one could extend or retract the length of a region/sample without cutting or slicing it. in Logic, i find myself using the scissors tool a lot to cut and split regions... which is at times less convinient - when you don't really want to split/cut a region but just shorten it a bit. is there a way to do that in Logic? ... and to be clear i'm not talking about time-stretching or shortening.

thanks for your reply. when i place the cursor on the end of a region, all i get is the that loop sign, which will activate the loop as long as i keep dragging to the right. dragging to the left is not even an option. i'm using the Pointer Tool. what am i missing here?
(i'm referring to an audio region)

  • Calculate region length in min:secs

    Greetings,
I can't seem to find it in the manual - I'd like highlight a region and know how long it plays without manually subtracting stop-start time. (I'm math challenged, aka stuuupid - besides, that's what I have a computer for)
I tried by setting up markers but that didn't give me the length of the marker.
Any helpful recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
If you're wondering - yes, it's for doing cue sheets.

    The Event List!!! Duh!
I was looking in the Bin and everywhere else. Wasn't thinking of regions as "events"
    Thank you.

  • Region length adjustment

i've been splicing some audio files together, some of which i have been adjusting in length to speed up or slow down to fit (along to video), i am finding with some of the regions there is some slight noise in the background after adjusting, only just noticeable but not of the original music, could this be because of a setting which i have not clicked?
    Thanks

"I am currently mixing 10 songs. Because logic lacks an easy way to apply global changes in a mix to a group of related songs, I have all of the tracks for all 10 songs loaded into a single logic "song" file. The songs appear in the arrange window consecutively with about 10 seconds of silence in between songs."
Y'know, I would question this working method myself. It's based on an incorrect assumption that Logic "lacks an easy way to apply global changes in a mix". I don't think that's correct at all. There are inserts on the master output object where I can put any effect I want that controls the entire mix.
Also, if you put each song on a separate track, then the whole selecting regions question goes out the window. With that, you would have both track-level plugins and automation as well as a master output object inserts for overall changes to the entire mix. Typically, you'd want separate EQ and compression for each song anyways. I've done mastering projects for years in Protools that way. You simply solo the song/track you're working on.
Bounce them down and drag them into Waveburner. In fact, why not just use Waveburner to start with? You can use all your Logic plugins on a track-by-track basis as well as a master effect. Then you can also control the the timing between tracks, etc.
Why do your mastering on a DAW when you have a mastering application, Waveburner?
    What did I miss?

  • How do I adjust maximum region length.

How do I increase the maximum length of time I can record in one go ?
I know this is not a tempo thing, there is a setting somewhere that defines the maximum length of a recording (not a song) and I can't find it anywhere !
    Any help would be great
    Thanks

  • Problem changing region length

    Hi all,
when i adjust the right end of an audio region logic moves painfully slowly, and it's v difficult to move the end point to the position i want because logic displays the process so poorly.
is anyone else having this problem.
is there some setting responsible for this?
is this something that is fixed in 7.2.1 (i'm still on7.1)
    any help appreciated.
    thanks,
    s

I haven't seen this problem in 7.2.x. Mind you, I have anti-aliasing turned off as well, so you may want to try that.

  • Logic freezing when editing audio region lengths

If I'm editing a track by chopping it into 4 bar pieces and then time stretching each section to get the tempo constant I get a very strange bug. It will do the audio stretching fine, but as soon as I click the menu bar to save, the program freezes and sits on 50% CPU load indefinitely, not allowing me to do anything, meaning I then have to kill the process and lose my work. Anyone know what's going on or experience any similar issues?

    Hello Caramby,
These audio files don't have buzzing or clicks in them, if they did the producer on session would have probably changed engineer lol. I'm cutting several files at once grouped in Logic: the DI feed, and the mics around the amp - so in total around 7 mono audio files. The buzzing sounds like a clocking issue rather than artefacts in the track as when I quit LP7 and reopen the audio and play it all the way through its fine - and I would also see any artefacts in the audio as I'm cutting pretty much to the sample, and then moving it to get it in time.
As you read in my original post, I can start editing and it be fine for 30 bars or worse and its 2 bars. When it happens and I press the Control+Shift keys (to fine tune the cut) and get the scrubbing sound of the audio, I get this clocking buzz...
The session was done in at a commercial studio ProTools 8 but our studio works mainly in Logic 7.2.x (with TDM hardware) as we find it a little easier to use (until we can get our hands on a stable version of PT8) So the audio needs to stay in LP7...
    Hope this helps!

  • Need to loop a  0 0 2 0 length region every 0 1 0 0 interval......

Hello, I need to loop a  0 0 2 0 length region every 0 1 0 0 interval. Is there an easy way to do this without adding silence to the region to match the region length to my loop length?

I found a way by packing the region into a folder, setting the folder length, then looping. This works, but just seems like a lot of unnecessary steps....

  • Setting the project tempo to match an audio region

The manual is pretty clear on how to do this but it talks in terms of one bar audio regions vs. an entire song. I'm trying to do a remix of a song that has subtle although very definate tempo variances throughout. The audio file of the original is imported into Logic and I've tried Options>Tempo>Adjust Tempo using Region Length and Locators but it's giving me one global tempo which does not match up when I compare the audio file to the click. It's not telling me where the tempo changes occur in my tempo track either. I'm wondering if it's even possible to do this. I could beatmap it? I don't know. Should be an easy thing to do.
I suppose a workaround could be to bus the audio file to an aux and then record that aux's output like I was recording it live but that seems like overkill.

The best tool for this is the beatmapping track. It's pretty easy to do, depending on your material, and it will conform Logic's clock to your audio's tempo, with appropriate tempo changes.
Once you beatmapped your track, Logic is in sync with it and you can then add sequences and use quantize etc.
If you are not sure how beat mapping works, shout back...

  • Can't see entire audo region?

    Hi,
I have made a recording in GB09, and I have 'hidden' or decreased part of it with the audio region length cursos that appears when you place the mouse over the bottom right or bottom left of a region
However, I now want to do the reverse, to see the entire region, but it won't let me! It seems as after you decrease a region's size, it leaves it like that and you have to stick with the smaller region
Why is this? It doesnt make sense
    J

Yoo know how after you record something in GB you get a solid section for the recording, which shows the peakes in input, etc.
If you place your cursor on the top right corner of this section, you can "loop" it towards the right..
Similarly, if you place your cursor just to the right or the left of this section, you can "trim" the section, in order to eliminate unwanted recording parts or blank parts.
What I am saying is that after doing this, it wont let me "undo" this, i.e. it wont let me do the reverse operation, grab the section by the left or right and increase the size to see previously "hidden" recordings.

  • Adjust Region to Locators error message

    Hello,
I've been trying to sync a video with the audio and I'm running into some problems.  It's something I've done before, but here's the deal.  I'm recording vocals for a film.  On occasion those vocals don't match quite so well, so I'll adjust the region to locators and things generally will slide into place without a problem.  I've also used the Option+drag to get the right length file.  Now that I've got my reels bounced out as vocal sessions I need to adjust the length of each session to match the feature length film file.  I've got a little bit of sync drift that I want to fix, but whenever I use the Adjust Region to Locators OR the Option+drag I get an error message:  Time Expansion fo Audio is limited to 400 percent of its original length.  Please set a smaller destination size and try again.  OR Time Compression of Audio is limited to 25 percent of its original length.  I'm only compressing 1.5 seconds from the end of a 20 minute region.  So I'm way under the 25% limit and nowhere near the 400% limit.
I can't find anything online about this, and it's driving me crazy.  Any thoughts?
    LP8.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    I had the same problem.
What I found out is that If you choose any one of the legacy algorithms for the time machine algorithms it will work!
Go to audio -> time machine algorithm -> Legacy Algorithms -> [choose any algorithm here]
Then go to audio -> adjust region length to locators
    and voila, it works.
Those legacy alorithms, namely "Version 5" and "Any Material" did the trick for me.
    Good luck!
