  • Re instating GarageBand '09 after a clean install of OSX Mavericks

I have a Time Machine back up of my entire hard disk, and because of a couple of suspected system wide issues, I decided to do a clean reinstallation of OSX Mavericks, and reinstall GarageBand X. That all went very well, my HD cleaned up and reformatted fine, OSX Mavericks installed flawlessly, and I began reinstalling Applications, files and folders. I have now run into a problem with the legacy version of Garageband '09, which, on reinstalling from the TM back up, did not simply transfer to the new Applications folder in a working form. Previous to my HD clean up/reinstallation, it had worked pretty well. Now it simply won't open, and I get an error message telling me it cannot find a valid instrument library.
Here is the error message:  The Instrument Library is invalid. GarageBand expects a valid Instrument Library folder in /Library/Application Support/GarageBand. Please choose a valid Instrument Library folder or quit and re-install GarageBand.
I do have a copy of the software installation DVD that shipped with my Mac, so in theory I could reinstall GarageBand '09, but I found that, on trying this, although the software 'installed', Garageband still will not open..
I could do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard, along with it's associated software, iLife '09, then 'update' to Mavericks and re download Garageband X, which, in theory, would solve the problem, having started with a 'clean slate', but that's a lot of trouble, with a lot of downloading..
Any ideas? I'd be grateful for any possible alternative options..
    Thanks,
    Ontradio :-)

    Hi leonie,
It looks like once my computer was subject to a clean install of OSX Mavericks, programs installed with iLife, i.e. iWeb, GarageBand. iPhoto, etc, were removed from my HD and cannot now be reinstalled.. I form the impression that they are not on the installation DVD's that shipped with my computer, and having examined the disks by placing them in my machine, there is no way I can tell whether that is correct, since there is no 'button' that allows me to look for their presence on the disks.
If you can shed any light on that conclusion, I'd be grateful for any advice you could offer. I guess it's not super imperitive that I have GarageBand '09, I can get by without it, but it would have been nice to have, and a couple of my songs use loops that were from GB '09, and these are now absent from the songs when played back in GB X. Of course, I cannot download the '09 version from the App store. Looks like Apple has me borked!
Thanks for your help, anyway, I'm always pleased to see your name here..
    Regards, Ontradio..

  • Illustrator CS6 crashes in Maverick, still... what to try next?

After installing Mavericks my Illustrator CS6 started crashing. App starts just fine, and I can work sometimes short periods, sometimes longer periods before the whole system crashes and restarts. I have updated Java, updated wacom drivers, have no 3rd party plug-ins installed, checked that the speech recognition is not on... to no effect. Any ideas what I could try to get rid of this highly irritating feature that stops me working efficiently?

    ODO,
Did you make a full reinstallation after installing Mavericks?
    That would be needed.
In cases like this, it is best to do it the full three step way:
Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • MBPr wifi bandwidth issues.

    Hello all,
I have just started having issues with my MBPr on my home wifi network... My internet works great with any other device, computers, etc. But when I connect my MBPr I am having issues where the entire ping for my home network goes from 30ms to 1600+ms... After talking to my ISP for over an hour we determined there is something running on my Mac that is causing the bandwidth on my network to completely be taken over.
I have bootcamp on my computer so when starting windows partition there is absolutely no issue at all when running speedtests, as well as when I am in a test user account meaning there is no hardware issue and it is guaranteed going to be user-specific. I don't have anything downloading or uploading upon startup. the only applications I see running is finder. Is there any plists or anything that I can do to try and get rid of this annoying problem. Have yet to figure out if this occurs on multiple networks. I have two different wireless routers that I can connect to and issue occurs on both.
If anyone has any ideas I am willing to try it! Thanks for the help. I have already tried a reinstallation of OSX Mavericks which went rather quickly similar to my expected internet speeds with no difference in performance after.
    Thanks,
    Blake

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • IMovie was lost in reinstallation of Mac mini late 2012 OS X Mavericks

    Hello everyone!
So I reinstalled OS X Mavericks on my Mac mini yesterday, and I even made a copy (?) of everything with Time-Machine.
Before the installation my external hard disk was being stupid and only showed me the Time-Machine copy of my MacBook Air and not the one I needed..
That made me reinstall OS X Mavericks because there is no other option, but when I started my Mac mini 'for the first time' (after the reinstallation) I saw iMovie and iPhoto where missing, so I went to the App Store and searched for iMovie first. It just gave me the iMovie page but instead of showing a download button it showed me a button that said 'Accept', so I clicked that and then a pop-up said 'Log in with your Apple-ID to accept all available apps'. I did that but nothing happened? So I went to the Apple iMovie site and opened the App Store via the button 'iMovie -> Open in App Store (to download)' and again that 'Accept' button... The exact same thing happened with iPhoto. Now I'm stuck and I don't know what to do.. I need iMovie tomorrow for an English project which I have to start all over again because my Time-Machine save/copy was gone...
    Please help me!
    Gijs

Had the same problem with iPhoto and iMovie. Try going to the purchases tab in the app store. You should see them there with an install button beside it. Go ahead and click and it should start installing.

  • How to reinstall iLife and iWork in macbook after reinstallation of maverick

I need help to reinstall the iLife and iWork which was initially preinstalled in my new macbook pro late 2013. Unfortunately, both were gone after I did a Maverick reinstallation as I accidentally deleted some wrong files causing OS to crash. Appstore requires I pay for it although both apps were initially free and bundled together with my laptop. Kindly advise.

Hi Terence, I have solved the predicament. Apparently I was using my wife's apple ID when I first register my macbook. Therefore, I am now able to redownload the iphoto through appstore.
    Thank you by the way.

  • Very slow printing after upgrading to Mavericks and reinstalling HP s/w for an Officejet 8600?

Before upgrading to Mavericks, my HP 8600s (have 2) would zing at printing.  Now they are incredibly slow.  I had to do a Restore after my operating system upgrade and after that, the HP folder was not in the Applications Folder.  That caused me to reiinstall the HP s/w for the 8600  which I downloaded from the HP website taking care to download and install exactly as was prescribed for the Mavericks scenario.  I'm wondering if the problem is that I chose the bonjour versions of each printer when I reinstalled to each printer.
An idea of what I mean by slow is a one and half page letter is taking over 5 minutes to print whereas it used to print at about 30 seconds.
I need some help on this ASAP because my home-office is at a standstill.  Many thanks.
    Tulsa Lawyer

    Hi BerniePiel,
Choosing the Bonjour version means you have chosen the wireless option. Bonjour is a technology that is built into Mac OS and iOS. This technology discovers devices such as printers that are installed on the same network as a Mac or Apple mobile device. Bonjour is the default method for discovering devices on a network.
I can certainly help you with this. When you added the printer, did you add the printer with the 'AirPrint' driver or are you using the HP driver? Us the screenshot below to help you check.
If you do not see AirPrint next to your printer name as shown above, delete the printer and re-add it. When you click the plus symbol you need to choose 'add another printer or scanner', then select your printer and choose the HP driver next to 'Use'.
If the issue persists, or you were already using the HP driver, try the following steps.
    Reset Printing System
Click the Apple icon (   ), and then click  System Preferences.
In the Hardware section, click  Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan  dialog box opens.
Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
    Click OKto confirm the reset.
Type the correct  Name and Password.
Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.
    Repair Disk Permissions
On the Dock, click Applications, and then click  Utilities.
    Double-clickDisk Utility.
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
Click the Repair Disk Permissions  button at the bottom of the window.
Once the repair is complete, restart the computer.
    Restart the computer
Once these steps have been complete, re-add the printer again, and print. Please let me know if this resolves the issue. If the issue persists I will gladly follow up and continue to work with you.
Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.

  • Recent after adding maverick I get this error occurred and shoots down the program. Can any help me try to resolve this problem? I done updates and reinstalls and it still happens

I have been using Adobe Premiere Elemnts on my Mac for years have done several project with no problems.
I have had this trouble in the pass but its back. Usually It fixes itself However I didnt have maverick. The message
a serious error has occurred the system will shut down and try to save your project. I have done updates and uninstalled
and restalled but I cant seem to resolve the problem. Can anyone suggest anything to try?

According to Roaring Apps (view in Safari) -> http://roaringapps.com/app/adobe-premiere-elements-9 - there is no data as to whether Premiere Elements 9 will work with Mavericks. Says it works with Mountain Lion but it seems that no one has posted data on use with Mavericks.
You might be better off upgrading Premiere Elements. I've no idea what the 'current' version id as I use Premiere CC.
    Good luck,

  • Reinstallation of Photoshop 10 in my Imac with Mavericks OSX creates error code 213:5

I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled all of my software. However when I install Photoshop Elements 10 and attempt to boot the program I get an error message of ,"Error_213:5".  I have read Permission fixes about the PCD folder and applied  "Apply to enclosed items," This did not fix the problem. Reset the Clock, still no joy. Did Adobe Chat & they of course directed me to this" support portal." This is the only computer this program has been installed in. I registered the program when I purchased it. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

  • Will a complete Mavericks reinstallation fix disk utility partition problems?

I tried to delete a bootcamp partition after a failed attempt at installing windows 7. I only got as far as the partition selection screen during the initial windows installation. I actually clicked "delete" for the bootcamp partition and it essentially erased the partition but it still shows up. All partition options are now greyed out. I cannot make any changes. The bootcamp partition still appears but I cannot click on any of the options. I am beyond frustrated at this point after researching the issue for hours. I haven't attempted a reinstall yet because I'm not even sure if that will help.

When you don't do things correctly, be prepared for bad endings. Reinstalling won't fix a thing. You need to backup your OS X volume, if you can. Then you must repartition the drive and reinstall OS X or restore the backup.
It would help to know exactly which iMac model your have. It would also be helpful if you would open Disk Utility, select your main hard drive entry (shows mfgr.'s name and size) then click on the Partition tab in Disk Utility's main window. Now take a snapshot of the Disk Utility window and post it here.
To post screen shot do this:
Press COMMAND-SHIFT-4 which will change the cursor to crosshairs.
Hold down the mouse button and use the crosshairs to select the part of the screen you wish to capture.
Release the button and the image will be saved to your Desktop.
Click on the Camera icon in the toolbar of the forum message editor.
Drag the image onto the Choose File button and click on the Insert button.

  • Mavericks 10.9.2 Junk Filtering radically broken

Mail under Mavericks (latest update as applied by App Store, verified multiple times that I have latest version of the OS, 10.9.2) has radically broken mail app junk filtering.
If I do the following I will have at least 90% of the messages sent end up marked as junk on my primary system, the last 17" MacBook Pro series made, however, even my less than one year old MacBook Air will exhibit similar behavior, just not at the extreme frequency of mail junk filtering failures as on the main MacBook Pro:
Create new email message addressed to myself
I should add that I have BCC myself set on all of my mail accounts
Add photos and Hit send (I use this process as a simple way to gather images from a number of folders on various backup drives and send the selected set of images in one group that I can then easily export to iPhoto (or Aperture)
    Message sends
Message never appears in my inbox, neither the TO: nor BCC: appear
Check sent folder and find that the message is IN the Sent folder, with brown header indicating that I Marked the message as JUNK, I did NOT do so
I have reset all rules, no change, disabled junk no change (yes with Junk DISABLED the above will happen), I have used the advance option and edited the rules to try and simplify the settings to the bare amount, all with no discernable changes. I have even added rules that explicitly state DO NOT consider as junk any messages containing my domain name for example, still no change.
Even though I have marked LEAVE JUNK MAIL IN INBOX it is inconsistent, mail I send to myself the majority of times will be in the sent folder, other email that mail app marks as junk MAY be in my inbox, but not consistently.
Even email I have marked multiple times as Not Junk continues to be marked as Junk (for example NO email sent from my work domain to my work domain email should ever be marked as junk, yet it is, but always inconsistently, that is out of  200 hundred plus emails a day, a handful will be marked as junk, in some cases the exact same sender will be marked as junk on successive days with me marking each message as Not Junk, then for a period all email will be delivered as intended, only to have stuff from the previous email sender start appearing as marked as junk again).
When I have ENABLED Junk filtering I have verified that all check boxes are as have been suggested in other threads here
Again, even DISABLING Junk filtering still results in the inconsistent delivery of my own emails to myself
As an experiment, if I send the message from my gmail account USING mail app to compose and send the message (NOT using the web interface to gmail, but the mail app native gmail account setup) sending the message to my personal domain email address it appears the problem never exhibits. The BCC shows up in my gmail account inbox, and TO: message appears in my primary personal domain account inbox. I have tried this at least four or five times and so far it has never failed to deliver the message, and never has marked as junk. However, based on the inconsistent behavior of junk filtering with my work domain email I would not be willing to bet that using gmail to send to my personal domain account would not have some junk filter mistakes as well.
This has gotten bad enough that I would gladly go to another mail client, but any alternative client needs to support at minimum the following:
Must support FULL iPhoto (or Aperture) integration, this means not only ability to send email from iPhoto, but ability to EXPORT images from a mail message into iPhoto, as well as select Photos from media in finder sidebar and have iPhoto browser open to SEND images via email  as alternative to sending from iPhoto directly
Must support Exchange (used for my work domain email)
Images in attached message should allow mass saving to file system folders as well if desired, in addition to exporting to iPhoto
I Have tried several alternative email apps for OS X. Postbox seems to be the only one that claims any iPhoto integration at all, and it is marginal at best, and does not seem to support exporting images directly into iPhoto regardless. Postbox also had some other weirdness, some options from mail seem to be just missing (for example if BCC myself on all messages exists I have not found the setting), loading messages with any attachments was much slower than mail, etc. But if there was a way to get Postbox to work better with iPhoto I would be willing to give it a try.
I have even wondered if maill app and/or preferences are corrupted. I have a ton of email that would be painful to lose (I do use Mail Steward to back up email from previous years, but it would be a fair amount of work to completely back up all of my accounts and delete everything and restart using Mail Steward, but that might be my only option). Even if I did totally kill all my preferences and deleted the entire mail section in /Library it is not clear if there is any way to reinstall just mail. Or do I download the entire OS X Mavericks installer, run that and hope it reinstalls mail app and start all over? I am willing to even try that, if I had a reasonable expectation that it would actually correct anything. But I suspect based on what I have seen here and on the web that this is a fundementatl break in the mail app code.
As an alternative, is there a terminal command I can try to use to totally eradicate and shutoff mail app junk filtering since the control in preferences to disable junk filtering is not working, at least on my system?
    Any ideas appreciated.
    Thanks

I did some additional testing last night. Setting Junk to DISABLED, closing mail and re-launching mail, and then sending myself a message from the same account STILL ends up with the message marked as JUNK (in fact it indicates I marked it for junk, which clearly I did NOT so mark my own message sent to me as junk) with the message marked as junk sitting in the sent folder. Setting junk filtering back to ENABLED, exiting mail and re-launching again, still no change. I again RESET all junk rules and learned behavior, tried sending myself a message again, and still had the same failure. I have verified the various settings that have been proposed in other threads in this forum, no joy, same behavior. It simply appears that email sent from your own account to yourself is frequently (if not 100% in recent testimng) tagged as being junk, and that simply is nuts.
Mail is fundamentally, radically broken since one of the latest Mavericks releases. (I think this actually started in 10.9.1, but I know for certain it is 10.9.2).
I fail to see how ANY setting of rules, et al, can be at issue here. When junk filtering is DISABLED nothing should ever be filtered as junk, period. In reality mail is still being impacted by the junk mail filtering, regardless of any setting, including totally disabling junk mail filtering in mail preferences.
Add in that in the latest versions of mail (again for at least the last two major 10.9 updates, if not longer) deleting messages is inconsistent. I have had messages I have deleted reappear in one of my folders multiple times. The most common are messages popping back up in the DRAFTS folder, where I have a copy of the message in my sent folder, and the recipient of the message acknowledges receipt of the message. Clearly the message is NOT still a draft. I manually delete these spurious messages and in some cases the same messages reappear back into mail in the drafts folder again!
I love Apple products, and support the company and their technology, but mail has some significant issues, and regrettably there does not appear to be any viable alternative that really integrates with the rest of the OS X environment as well, leaving us with either a badly broken mail client, or significant downgrade in functionality moving to a different client.

  • Why do you need a usb bootable drive to do a clean install of Mavericks (or any other OSX)?

I have had a few minor bugs with Mavericks, and I finally got an external hard drive, so I decided to do a clean install of Mavericks.
Every single tutorial I've found online has suggested making a usb-bootable drive to reinstall the os with.  However, I simply backed up the things I wanted to save on my external hard drive, restarted holding Cmd+R and went to disk utility, erased my Macintosh HD in the correct format, then went over to the install Mavericks tab on the recovery mode screen.  Now, I understand it takes a little longer to do it this way, but it's only got about an hour left, and I started the reinstallation about 20 min's ago.
Besides the much longer time to wait for the OS to reinstall using my method, without a USB drive, what is the disadvantage of simply doing it all through the recovery mode boot screen via wifi?  I know I could have done the bootable drive on my external hd, but I'd rather not mess with partitions on this drive...it's just got my documents, music, movies...etc, and I'd like to keep it that way.
    Any info would be appreciated.

Besides the time difference and the data used on your network connection they are the same.
Actually there is one difference depending on when the USB installer was made the software you load might be out-of-date. When you download from a Apple you know you are getting the latest versions. So if you do use a USB stick to install make sure you run a software update before doing anything.

  • Why did so many permissions need to be repaired after Mavericks?

Here's my story regarding Repairng Permissions; its seems a repair is the only thing keeping my Mac running.
I've a Mac Book Pro 15" Spring 2011, been doing the upgrades etc ever since, but after Mavericks upgrade I was having issues never seen before with my Apple upgrades.  In short after upgrade I was getting gray screen, blue screen etc. Random screen splits with horizontal lines.
Took many tries to reboot, safe reboot, clear pram, etc.  I ran EtreCheck got rid of lots of things. I broke out disk and ran full hardware test - all good.  I have reinstalled OS X, as well as done two clean reinstalls of everything.  Even after that, I would still crash from time to time, with gray and blue screen either after re-awakening or simply opening iPhoto.
Nothing in panic or crash logs except this: 12/29/13 1:49:17.286 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[294]: (com.apple.ReportCrash) Falling back to default Mach exception handler. Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self
Once I finally got in, I went to disk utiloity and ran verify permissions and saw many issues, then ran repair disk permissions.  I wanted to keep the log of all the changes and went to print and save as PDF - it was over 521 pages of permissions fixed! I didn't bother saving that file, I wish I did now.
I've been runing about 2 days without blue, gray crash so I am hoping that fixed it - but if this was a plane, no way would I fly it.
My question:  After the both reinstalls and clean installs, why would so many permissions need to be repaired?

For some reason, after I run repair permissions in Disk Utility, I can run it again, and the same problems are "corrected."
    That's a waste of time.
Is Disk Utility actually doing anything?
Basically, nothing on second or subsequent runs when the function is used repeatedly.
It seems like every time I run repair permissions the same problems are present. Has this happened to anyone else?

  • How to transfer Painter 12 with my custom brushes from old iMac to a new iMac both running Mavericks

    Hi,
I just purchased a new iMac. Have Painter 12 on my older iMac and want to be able to transfer Painter 12, with my custom brushes to my new iMac. Tried Airdrop but got a message that it was damaged and that I should trash it. Does any know how to get  Painter 12 with all my custom brushes to my new machine? Both are running Mavericks.
    Thank you,
    Jim

    etresoft,
Thank you for your response. I did try to use Migration Assistant and I got as far as the two machines trying to communicate with each other. So I guess the answer to your question would be I tried, I failed and it worked until a certain point. I understand that there are other ways to connect the machines, I would have to see if I have the proper cables to do so. Airdrop did get data to my new machine and that tells me that they do see each other on the network. I do not know why they did not see each other via Migration Assistant. I assume that I could go to Corel's site and download Painter 12 to my new machine, ( my new machine does not have a disk drive ), but I will not have my custom brushes etc. and would have to totally make them up in the fresh install version and I am trying to avoid that.
You are probably correct in saying that Painter 12 probably needs a full reinstallation to work properly. Am I to assume that Migration Assistant will do a full reinstallation, including my custom brushes? I guess I am a little confused here.
    Jim
