Release memory in iPhone SDK

Hi,
1. I want to release previous memory before I redraw the screen. Is this the right way to do it using iPhone SDK?
[self.securityCodeView release];
self.securityCodeView = [[SecurityCodeView alloc] initWithFrame:Frame];
[self addSubview:securityCodeView];
[\b]
2. How do I refresh the screen without having to ALLOC memeory again? For example, I draw the screen ([self addSubview:securityCodeView]) and after one second, the screen needs to be redrawn (what statement to use?).
3. How do you retain some UIViews without redrawing since they don't need to be redrawn again (what statement to use)? For example, backgroundView needs not to be redrawn.
Thank you.

I would suggest you read the docs on Memory Management on Obj-C. Basically anything you allocate explicitly will remain allocated (with a ref count of 1) until you explicitly do a release:
[myView release];
When you add a view to another view's subview, that view's ref count is incremented. So you can safely release the added view and yet use the references to the object throughout the code (as long as the parent view is not released/deallocated).

  • IPhone SDK 2.2 memory corruption

    Hello. I'm working on an application for iPhone SDK 2.2 and seem to be having weird memory corruption problems. Not necessarily leaks because using Instruments shows my memory stamp never going above about 1.8 megs. The nature of the app is a database of animals so I'm constantly loading and unloading sounds and images. None of the objects are very large (at most I'll have 4 800k pngs loaded at once) and I've checked and rechecked my alloc/retain/release and everything is in order (hence no memory usage increase). However...after using the application for a while I'll notice strange behavior. For example:
    1) we have a UILabel as the title for each page. After a while the font size of this will change.
    2) I have several screens with a subclassed UIScrollView where images are loaded and then added to. The problem shows itself here by the images not showing up. there's no crash, stepping through the debugger shows that the image loads up fine, it's just that the image is not there.
    3) I have a UILabel at the top of an animal description screen, which in the nib file is called "Animal Name" by default. This will change to show "Animal Name" at the top.
    I've removed all audio in our latest build so that isn't the problem. What I'm starting to suspect is that altering anything defined in a nib file will cause corruption. For example, the UIScrollView is defined in the nib file, and I constantly am reassigning the contents of that with a UIImageView. This UIImageView is handled within the subview class like :
    UIImageView *imgView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage: [ UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile:[[NSBundle mainBundle ] pathForResource:imageToLoad ofType:@"png" ]] ];
    imgView.tag = 50;
    [self addSubview:imgView ];
    [ imgView release ];
    Then later when moving away from the screen I'll find that view's tag and remove it from the superview (since addSubView increases the retain count, the alloc+addSubView is cancelled by release+removeFromSuperView)
    I can't explain why titles that are never changed would be affected, but it must somehow be related. What I'm wondering is: are there any known issues involving modification of the contents of objects defined in Nib files? Perhaps the memory allocated when initWithNibName is restrained, then any modification of objects allocated within it can cause corruption. I'm starting to think I should just alloc and free anything modified in code and skip using nib files altogether (I reset the text on buttons for example). If this is a known issue please let me know. I'll give you more information if I can.
    Thank you

    Just download the huge SDK package and install. No need to uninstall the old SDK.

  • IPhone SDK: unrecognized selector

    I'm relatively new to Objective-C/iPhone SDK development. I have an issue that really seems to produce random (or at least nondeterministic) errors, all of which are "unrecognized selector" errors.
    I have a UITableViewController that is populated with table names from a MySQL database. When I select a table name, a second UITableViewController is created to display detailed data. I thought this was working just fine, but I discovered I have problems when I select a certain table name, (detailed results are displayed in second UITableViewController), go back, select the same table name, (...), go back, and select the same table name a third time. The Simulator explodes and gives me an error like:
    * -[UICGColor length]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1050810
    Sometimes it's related to UICGColor, sometimes it's related to CALayerArray. Sometimes it doesn't produce any error at all and just terminates.
    What's also weird is that only some of the table names cause this to happen. Also, if I cycle through several table names (i.e., not select the same table over and over), the app is fine. I would tend to think that maybe something is wrong with my database or MySQL C API usage, but the fact that things are perfectly fine the first and second (and third and fourth and ... and nth for some tables) time baffles me. I'm not using any dynamic method calling either -- just straight
    [ object method: ] syntax, so I'm not sure how it suddenly can "lose" the selector reference that it was perfectly happy to use earlier. As far as I can tell, I'm releasing memory as necessary.
    Any clues why this seems to be so weird and unpredictable? I can provide source if it would help.

    Ugh. Problem solved. I was tampering with autorelease, and it got me into trouble. I had this:
    query = [ [ [ NSString alloc ] initWithFormat:@"...%@", [ [ tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:indexPath ] text ] ] autorelease ];
    I thought that I should autorelease the "anonymous" object I created. It made sense at the time, but upon thinking about retain/release more closely, it's so clear now.

  • IPhone SDK - trouble working with iPod Touch 2G

    Hello, new Macbook OSX 10.5.4, new iPod Touch running iPhone OS 2.1. Just downloaded and installed xcode 3.1.1 and newest iPhone SDK.
    I read the iPhone OS Pre-Installation Advisory document found here:
    http://developer.apple.com/iphone/download.action?path=/iphone/iphoneos_software_preinstallation_advisory/iphone_os_2.1_preinstallationadvisory.pdf
    I created shortcut:
    .../iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/2.1.1/
    pointed to:
    .../iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/2.1/
    Checked the shortcut, it works.
    Start xcode, open Window->Orgnizer. "Xcode cannot find the software image to install this version" is showing up just below the "Software Version" line. Software version has a value of 2.1.1 (5F138).
    If I ignore this and continue to build, sign and try the application. I will receive an error message "Your mobile device has encountered an unexpected error (0xE800003A) during the install phase: Verifying application" I tried disconnect the iPod Touch, power off, power on. Same problem.
    I tried to make a complete copy in (not a shortcut):
    .../iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/2.1.1/
    Same problem.
    What should I do to trace this issue?

    I wanted to compile and upload the sample app Accelerometer Graph onto my brand new ipod touch 16.
    I got the notorious error (0xE800003A) during the install phase, verifying.
    i checked all the product id#'s which i just copied/pasted when creating the certificates etc.... so i don't know what's wrong... so what IS wrong?
    here's the logs:

We have a duty to our business to maintain the same level of control, management, and security across mobile devices.
    Here is what the iPhone SDK needs:
    * Ability to run background processes
    * Ability to change device settings and modify data that is outside of the application sandbox model
    * Ability to force a download and installation of an application (such as anti-virus)
    * API's into device wipe function and system functions such as application start/stop, device lock/unlock
    * API's for initiating device wipe, intercepting attempts to start/stop other applications, and control over device lock/unlock.
    Making these available will help IT allow the iPhone to become adopted with the corporate world. Until then, the iPhone will remain a consumer device.
    Best regards

  • IPhone SDK b3: How I fixed broken (blank) Research Assistant

    Hello, I wanted to give this thread a new title as the original thread didn't indicate "iPhone SDK" in the title, and was in reference specifically to b2. The original thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6935634#6935634
    Here are my findings. Research Assistant was working great for me until I upgraded my original (b1) iPhone SDK directly to b3, skipping b2 entirely. In reading posts in the aforementioned thread, this problem seems to occur when going from b1 -> b2, and I can surmise probably also from b1 -> b2 -> b3.
    The comments in the aforementioned thread were useful in helping me reach a fixed state, for which I conclude a clean re-installation of b3 was necessary. Just doing steps 3) through 6), inclusive, _did not fix my problem._
    1) Uninstall iPhone b3 SDK
    sudo /developer/Libraray/uninstall-devtools --mode=all
    2) Reboot. Reinstall iPhone b3 SDK. Reboot.
    3) Launch Xcode. "Go to Xcode : Preferences... : Documentation"
    4) Click + to add the following entries (you might already see a bunch of grayed-out entires):
    /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/Documentation/DocSets
    /Developer/Documentation/DocSets
    /Library/Developer/Shared/Documentation/DocSets
    5) Exit and relaunch Xcode
    6) Go to "Project : Edit Project Settings" and click on "Rebuild Code Sense Index".
    After doing all of this, my Research Assistant now works. I wanted to share this with the community in hopes that others learning the iPhone SDK aren't dissuaded by this issue, which can cause a very substantial barrier to learning its APIs quickly.

    Thanks for all the tips. Unfortunately for me it still doesn't work
    After trying for a day I give up ... bulky docs pane here I come.
    Might be because I am using standard Xcode Dev Tools and not the iPhone SDK version of it, but I am still hoping Apple will release a fix for this annoying bug.

  • How to reduce CompositionElements/RAM consumption, changing MediaElement won't release memory.

    Hello there,
    First of all thanks for such a great framework, its pretty nice architected and really helpfull.
    I've been using media composition elements In custom made player experience,
    What I came across and can't get rid off is memory usage by the flash player whilst media elements are in series and parallel.
    Whenever I try to remove media elements from composition element,
    or add/change/remove mediaElement it won't affect player to release memory.
    'nulling' player media reference, removing element from media container, also won't help.
    Aprox. adding up to twenty media elements causes 400-500 Mb of RAM usage, the more lements the more RAM..
    Could guru's tell me how can I reduce/avoid such an issue, any workaround? (Is that issue related to flash player VideoObject/NetStream scope thats out of OSMF?)
    Any advance will be apreciated.Thank you.
    Env. Flex SDK 4.1 + OSMF 1.5 release
    Pseudo code as follows:
    SomeMediaFactory
    .. function constructMediaElement():MediaElement
        var aggrElement:ParallelElement = new ParallelElement();
        var serial1:SerialElement = new SerialElement();
        var serial2:SerialElement = new SerialElement();
        var videoOfSerial1:LightweightVideoElement = new LightweightVideoElement(new URLResource("some.media1.mp4");
        var videoOfSerial2:LightweightVideoElement = new LightweightVideoElement(new URLResource("some.media2.mp4");
        //add to serial
        serial1.addChild(video1);
        serial1.addChild(video2);
        serial1.addChild(video5);
        serial2.addChild(video6);
        serial2.addChild(video7);
        serial2.addChild(video10);
        //add to parallel
        aggrElement.addChild(series1);
        aggrElement.addChild(series2);
        return aggrElement;
    //release container and media
    ...function releaseMedia()
        if (mediaPlayer.media)
            mediaContainer.removeMediaElement(mediaPlayer.media)
        mediaPlayer.media = null;
    ...function constructMedia()
        releaseMedia();
        var newMedia:MediaElmnt = SomeMediaFactory.constructMediaElement();
        mediaPlayer.media = newMedia;
        mediaContainer.addMediaElement(newMedia)
    ..function init()
        constructMedia();
    .. function onSomeEventThatWeNeedChangeMediaSource()
         releaseMedia()..
         mediaPlayer.media = Somefactory.newMedia();

    Hi msrustem,
    It looks like there's indeed a memory build up when using multiple media elements in a serial composition.
    I've currently logged a bug in Jira (link: http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FM-1227), and it will go throught a review process (hence I'm not sure when the fix will be out, but as soon as it is, I'll let you know).
    Off the top of my head it looks like the netStreams used to create the serial composition are not reused, but rather new ones are added and cached with every new media element that starts playing, and that could be the cause. However developers need to take a closer look.
    Feel free to check out the bug description and provide additional information if necessary.

  • Customizing unlock screen (official iPhone SDK)

    Hi,
    I want to write a small application, that implements a customized unlock screen on iPhone. Is there a way to do it using standard iPhone SDK?
    Thanks a lot for a clues
    Nava

    I tried the following :
    NSError *error;
    NSArray *paths = NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES);
    NSString *documentsDirectory = [paths objectAtIndex:0];
    NSString *path = [documentsDirectory stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"export.csv"];
    if ([records writeToFile:path atomically:YES encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding error:&error] == NO) {
    UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"Export error" message:@"An error occured while writing the file."
    delegate:self cancelButtonTitle:@"OK" otherButtonTitles: nil];
    [alert show];
    [alert release];
    static NSString *email = @"[email protected]";
    NSString *outMailtoPath = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"mailto:%@?subject=Review&body=%@&attachment=%@", email, @"test", path, nil];
    NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString: [(NSString *)CFURLCreateStringByAddingPercentEscapes(NULL, (CFStringRef)outMailtoPath,NULL,NULL,kCFStringEncodingUTF8) autorelease]];
    [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:url]

  • Problems downloading iPhone SDK

    I just recently signed up for an Apple Developer account and am trying to download the iPhone SDK. When I start the download it never actually downloads and eventually times out. My problem is also described in these threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11033796&#11033796
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11000681&#11000681
    In those threads I have tried the fixes and still been unable to accomplish the download.
    I have tried on computers running Vista and Windows 7 and on my Mac running Snow Leopard.
    On Windows (either one) after clicking on the link it comes up with the file information, I click save, and then the file download dialog opens. No transfer rate ever appears and neither does any indicator that I have downloaded any of the file. Eventually it times out.
    On the Mac I tried downloading with Safari. Safari gets 1.1kb of the file and then tells me it will be many, many years before the download completes and eventually errors out that the server has not responded.
    I currently have a 7 mb DSL connection. I am able to download any other file in the developer release section including X-Code and the Mac SDKs. In fact I have installed both X-Code and the Mac SDKs already and they were fine.
    Other things I have tried:
    1. Multiple browsers on Windows (Firefox, Chrome) with similar errors.
    2. Hooking straight into the modem (normally hooked into wireless N router)
    3. Disabling the modem firewall and Windows Firewall (Macs firewall is off by default. Is that normal?)
    4. using the trick from the other threads of changing http to https. For me it makes no difference.
    5. My work computers (with the same ISP) have no problems downloading the file. However with no disc drive, and with the USB ports disabled that doesn't really help me much. I only tried to see if they would work with my login since another thread suggested some users were being cut off.
    Something else I do not understand is why I have to download the SDK with X-Code. Since I already have the latest version installed it seems like Apple could be saving on bandwidth there. No big deal but just kind of strange.
    Any help anyone could give me would be appreciated.

    Alright it turns out it was actually the DSL modem. Apparently the last major firmware update causes it to have problems downloading specifically from Apple servers. Both iTunes HD content and large downloads from Apple servers are unable to be downloaded. SD content, music, and downloads under roughly 1 gb are unaffected.
    The modem is the 2Wire 2701. I actually managed to find an older modem that worked and downloaded the SDK fine. At this point I am looking around for a new modem just so in the future I will be able to download updates etc.
    Also after a lot of searching it turns out that Qwest doesn't cap their service at all. Even the one report with a limit I turned up turns out that it was either true only back then or was part of a trial that ended. At this point Qwest does not cap at all.
    Take a hint if you are going to respond to a post try to be helpful. If you are not actually going to help troubleshoot don't both.
    But you did use an emoticon. So at least you were useless . . . with style.

  • IPhone SDK Beta 4 - How to send emails with attachments?

    Hello everyone!
    This is my first post Please be so kind to point me in the right direction.
    Using the official iPhone SDK Beta 4, I am trying to show the compose email screen not only with a subject and body fields, but also with an attached PDF file that I generated. I know that many apps available in the Installer.app can do that, but can the SDK do that as well?
    Generating a mailto URL doesn't seem to be the answer since the RFC 2368 doesn't support attachments as far as I understand. All my attempts to hard-code a mailto URL that could trick the Mail application into composing a message with an attachment have failed...
    Could you give me a hint or maybe copy paste some code to help me with attaching files to emails?
    Thank you so much in advance,
    Eugene

    I tried the following :
    NSError *error;
    NSArray *paths = NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES);
    NSString *documentsDirectory = [paths objectAtIndex:0];

  • IPhone SDK, any way to send/receive a text SMS?

    I've been looking through the iPhone SDK for a way to send a SMS from my application. Also I'd like to inspect the SMS inbox for specfic messages that have been received. Has anyone been able to send/receive a SMS from their application?
    Thanks,
    Tony

    I think this is a limitation of the Beta SDK.
    I've read that there are many limitations in place for 3rd party-developed apps that are designed to maintain integrity of the OS but I can't see Apple being so Dickensian.
    Hopefully, much more will be unleashed with the full release of the SDK.

  • IPhone SDK - OpenGL ES

    Hello,
    I've done quite a bit of OpenGL programming and was excited to use OpenGL ES via the iPhone SDK. It turns out that OpenGL ES content cannot be simulated and must be run on the iPhone itself.
    I live in Canada, where the iPhone hasn't officially been released (I own an iPod Touch). Is there any way to start using OpenGL ES now that will allow me to get a feel for how the code will run on the iPhone?
    Thanks.
    Brennan

    Hey there,
    You need a development certificate in order to compile the code using OpenGL (we stopped our project too). So a friend of mine applied for the 99 USD dev kit to get a certificate so we could do this type of development.
    The free SDK does not let you upload to the iPhone yet so thats the only solution for now it looks like. Hopefully we'll get our certificate soon but who knows when that will happen.

  • Problems building w/ Snow Leopard and iPhone SDK 3.0 Snow Leopard

    Suddenly having problems building and codesigning after upgrading to Snow Leopard and iPhone SDK 3.0 Snow Leopard.

    Any ideas? This is really strange.
    The same error occurs when trying to build for Device - 3.0, and any other version it seems.
    This is especially frustrating as I'm simply trying to update an app that I released before I upgraded.
    I will love whoever helps me forever and ever.
    saikyo

    Found the new SDK on the CD. Now I am running XCode 3.2.
    I'm talking to myself now for the benefit of future readers.
    On the Dev Center I see the note:
    "Important: You will need to re-install the iPhone SDK for Snow Leopard if you plan on developing iPhone applications after upgrading your Mac to Snow Leopard and installing Xcode 3.2."
    So I'm going to download and install the iPhone SDK 3.0 (Snow Leopard) from the SDK downloads area on the Dev Center page. This seems weird to me as it's 3.0... but I'm running 3.2 now... I guess this will just update my 3.2?
    I also notice that when I run XCode 3.2 I don't have Simulator as an option anymore in my profiles.
    Going to go ahead with the update now and see how it goes.

  • IPhone SDK 2.0 - xcode fails to build new project

    I downloaded and installed the latest iPhone 2.0 SDK. I did not uninstall any previous tools (xcode/SDK). I assume the 2.0 SDK installation will perform the upgrade in a proper fashion (not requiring one to uninstall the previous SDK/xcode). I start up xcode. I check the version via the about menu. It states that the version of xcode is 'Version 3.1 (Beta)'. The project settings indicate that the Base SDK is Device - iPhone OS 2.0. I checked my system to ensure that my current filesystem has the correct SDK. It has the Macintosh HD->iPhoneOS.pltaform->Developer->SDK's->iPhoneOS2.0.sdk.
    OK, everything seems good up to this point. I create a new xcode application for the iPhone. I then go to compile the application and I get the following error:
    /Developer/iPhone Examples/Foo/Classes/FooAppDelegate.h:16: error: syntax error before 'UIToolbarController'
    Source code line : UIToolbarController *toolbarController;
    Yes I realize that the UIToolbarController API has been removed for SDK 2.0. However, how can one use xcode to build a starter application if it is generating code that references outdated API's???
    Am I doing something wrong? I have searched all the forums but have not come across this issue. Hence, I think something is wrong with my setup/install. If the solution is not to use UIToolbarController API, then why does the xcode still use it to build starter code projects? Also, if we can't use the API, what is it's replacement?
    thanks

    It created more errors, as there are a whole lot of other API's
    that have changed (UIViewController now doesn't resolve
    some of it's members, e.g. toolbarItem).
    Err... hello? Someone just told you what the names have changed to!
    Wow. I have about 1 months worth of work, that I am going to
    have to seriously think about throwing away because of all of
    these growing pains.
    Can't talk about the iPhone SDK specifically, but Xcode in general has great refactoring tools that will make the name changes, in all locations, in a split second for you. No, lets not get hysterical. It's not one month's work at all. It's not even five seconds work.
    I think the newer 2.0 release is causing more problems than solutions.
    That's the whole point. It's not a release. It's a beta. That's what happens with beta's. That's why you sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), stating that under no conditions will you discuss the SDK with anyone, and that you agree that things may change without prior notice or even break down completely.
    Basically shutting down all of my development efforts.
    Errrr.... hello again?

  • IPhone SDK to iPhone...?

    Hi,
    I know this long post may seem very disturbing to some members, but it is important for me to post it.
    Today (July 12th), I have struggled, and struggled, and struggled to try and use the iPhone SDK on a PPC based mac. And yes, I did succeed! I had to modify Xcode & iPhone simulator in several ways to make it build & run properly. I have started to learn how to use Interface builder for iPhone.
    However, I was not aware that the $99 dollar fee was to get your app onto the iPhone, I though the fee was for getting your app on to the app store. I was so disappointed that after about 4 hours of fiddling around Finder & hidden files to modify Xcode, I wouldn't be able to try my application on my father's iPod Touch.
    So then, I tried different methods:
    1. I did it the traditional way; plugging in the iTouch and using "organizer" in Xcode to sync. It gave me the well known error message that verification had failed.
    2. I set the SDK to "device iPhone 2.0", so that Xcode would build my test app as an "iPhoneos-release" app. Then, I dragged the resulting application into iTunes/Applications (via iTunes itself). Worked fine. Pressed sync, and it gave me the famous warning that the app failed verification. I wasn't very pleased.
    So now here I am. I do not want to sell or place anything on the App Store. All I would like is to develop applications for my father's iTouch. I have been developing AppleScript Studio apps for about 3 years now, a new platform is interesting. I am aware that some organisation created a Mac OS X application named "Pwnage" and that would let me install my app on the iPod Touch. However, it's a hack, and I really do NOT want to hack the device.
    My end question would be, is there any way to "bypass" the $99 fee? I only want the app for my family's personal use.
    Regards,
    Philippe H.

    But don't you need a server for ad-hoc stuff?
    http://www.tuaw.com/2008/06/11/what-does-ad-hoc-app-distribution-mean-for-users/
    Also, the mini-app would really be for personal use, so I don't think the app store is right for that.
