Remove Attachments from Leopard Mail does not remove attachment from .emix

Every day I back up my mail (and other items) to an external hard drive using an Automator workflow, in order that I can synchronize mail on my work and home Macs. In order to make this process as quick as possible, I routinely remove attachments from all mail messages once I have saved them to where they need to go on my hard drive.
I have noticed that since upgrading to Leopard (archive and install), the size of the mail folder which I back up (user>library>mail) is getting significantly bigger every day, despite removing all attachments. Upon investigation it seems that although the attachment has been removed from the mail message, the attachment is still in it's associated .emix file (e.g. user>library>mail>POP???mailaccountfolder>INBOX.mbox>messages>?????.emix - if this email contained a 5mb attachment which was removed using mail>message>remove attachments, the .emix file will still be 5mb).
Anyone else experiencing this problem? know a workaround? It didn't happen with mail in 10.4!

I am not sure when I will get the chance to test this -- maybe this afternoon. But I had not understood that what you called original continued to have the attachments. If so, this strongly suggests to me that it indeed may be the way Gmail maintains the All Mail folder that is causing this. See:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=6581
If there is a setting to help this, it will have to be one that is selected in the Settings webpage of Gmail, I suspect.

  • Mail does not print attachment name & prints small

When printing an email, if it has an attachment, it does not print the attachment name.  It prints the icon of the attachment (excel, word, psd, etc.) but it doesn't print the name of the file under it.  This started happening since upgrading to Mavericks.
Also, emails are printing much smaller.  Is there a way to enlarge the font when printing?

The same here and quite a lot of other Mail bugs - and all since the new MacPro and Mavericks, no such problems with Mavericks on the MacBookPro 2011 though
Sometimes the file names are printed, sometimes not and there is no way to find out why - it happens on and off with own mails to be sent and mails received.
Workaround for own mails is put each file underneath the other with some distance from the last word. Workaround in case of customer mails received go to reply, edit signature on top, reduce to one page and hope .... sometimes it works.
Also: on and off, Preview will show and printer will print only header on the first page, then body text on the second - only workaround to date (and believe me, I've tried everything) is use Reply, eliminate your own signature and reduce the printed area to less than a page
Also: long mails with back-and-forth messages may print a line half on one page and lower half on second one .... no workaround here.
Seems Mail is going to A4 US instead of A4 small (Europe), though this is not what the printer and the system or Word etc. are set to.
And a sneaking suspicion, that it works ok with people sending me mails from a Mac, but not from a Windows box ... can't bother all my customers though and ask
So please Apple - lots of people have the same problems - will you finally do something about it ... and yes I used the Feedback function

  • Mail does not save attachment in rtfd file

When I save a message with an attachment into rich text file, the attachment is not saved.
I have an email with an attached word file: I choose File>Save As..., I check the box "Include Attachments", I choose the Format as Rich Text and navigate to the folder I want. The resulting file has the extension rtfd, but the word attachment is not inside it. Any clues?
    Thanks

Same issue here. After searching Apple support found this:

Basically the "solution" is to manually save the attachments separately.

  • My new macbook pro (Mountain Lion) will not log into my 1and1 server to connect to my e mail. My snow leopard macbook does not have this problem - Apple support say it is a 1and1 problem! do I have to wait for an update of Mountain Lion?

My new macbook pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.1) will not log into my 1and1 outgoing mail server. ( It will receive mail - but does not send)My old Snow Leopard macbook does not have the same problem ( server settings etc. are identical) . Apple Support say its a 1and1 problem , 1and1 say it is an operating System prob - I have tried changing port numbers.

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:

    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

The "always match my default message font" option in the Signature preferences from Mac Mail does not work if e-mail is received in other Mail Software. How can I make it work?

I found this plugin which solved pretty much all of my mail font rendering problems.  It is designed for Lion, so don't know whether it will work but thought I would offer it up.

  • IPhoto6 - after a full reistall of Snow Leopard, iphoto does not display thumbnails. I've restored from time machine, rebuilt the library and run through the rebuild thumbnails function with no success. The files are there, I just get a dotted outline.

iPhoto6 on iMac running SL - after a full reistall of Snow Leopard, iphoto does not display thumbnails. I've restored the library from time machine, rebuilt the library from iPhoto and run through the rebuild thumbnails function with no success. The files are there, I just get a dotted outline instead of the thumbnails. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to restore the thumbnails?

    Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • When I try to migrate from imac to macbook pro my user account says this user needs attention before migrating. My e-mail does not migrate in the process. this never happened before i updated to Maverick

When I try to migrate from imac to macbook pro my user account says "this user needs attention before migrating". My e-mail does not migrate in the process. This never happened before I updated to Maverick. I have repaired user permissions but this not make any difference

Just a Follow-up - the migration went fine. The migration did not import Little Snitch, Flip4Mac and DivX, stating they were incompatible.  It also reported that Intego Back up Assistant has improper security setting (which I have not yet investigated).
I am encountering small problems.  Safari would not open embedded pdf documents and instead showed a black screen.  This was fixed with instructions found at http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/display-pdf-browser-acrobat-xi.html and it now works fine.
Importing 17 years of old mail from Eudora to Apple Mail was time consuming. mostly because of the pre-migration preening i did, but using Eudora file cleaner before the migrtaion helped a lot.
I amy find some more glitches, but so far everything seems to be working.

  • Mail does not send email

My problem is simply that Mail does not send email.
I have just migrated from iMac G5 to iMac Intel by using Migration Assistant. Everything else works just fine and I can receive email. However, if I try to reply, forward or send a new email message, Mail just does not do anything - no error message, nothing.
The fixes I have tried so far are removing the Mail plist file, repairing disk permissions and mailboxes. Of course, I have checked the account settings, especially outgoing server settings. I also reinstalled Mail application with Pacifist. None of this has solved the problem. I have tried sending email with Thunderbird and it works with no problems.
Does anybody have any suggestions how to fix this issue?
The OS is 10.4.8, Mail Version 2.0.6 (749.2/752.3), all the suggested software updates done.
    iMac Core Duo 20" 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Reinstalling Mail is rarely necessary or appropriate to solve a problem. It certainly cannot fix anything that could be wrong within your home folder or at the server or with the network, and may even introduce new issues if not done properly. Moreover, in Mac OS X 10.4 you don’t need Pacifist to reinstall Mail, you could also do it as described in the following article:
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, if the version of the system software on your install disks is earlier than what you’re using now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, to bring Mail back in sync with the rest of the system:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel
The above won’t solve the problem. It’s just to ensure that you’ve properly reinstalled Mail, which you shouldn’t have done, and which apparently you didn’t do properly -- the version of Mail on your system should be 2.1.1, not 2.0.6.
The original problem could be caused by some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services -- the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
    Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, this other article provides links to some utilities that can be used for troubleshooting and cache cleaning:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
It seems that the most appropriate utility for solving this particular problem is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
    4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you wish.
    5. Click the Execute button.
    6. Restart the computer.

  • Mail does not create new emails based on the highlighted mailbox, but rather the receiving mailbox of whatever individual email happens to be highlighted. This was not the case prior to Lion. Is this a bug or an error on my part?

Mail does not create new emails based on the highlighted mailbox, but rather according the receiving mailbox of whatever individual email happens to be highlighted. This was not the case prior to Lion. Is this a bug or an error on my part? (I do have the setting for creating new emails from the highlighted mailbox checked.)

The questions about time was not only because of thinking about the Time Machine, but also possible impact on recognizing which messages remaining on a POP server (doesn't apply to IMAP) have been already downloaded. In the Mail folder, at its root level, in Mail 3.x there is a file named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 that should prevent duplicate downloading -- some servers may not communicate the best with respect to that, and the universal index must certainly be involved in updating that index file. If it corrupts, it can inhibit proper downloading. However, setting the account up in a New User Account and having the same problem does not point that way, unless your POP3 server is very different from most.
That universal index is also typically involved when messages are meant to be moved from the Inbox to another mailbox -- in Mail 3.x the message does not move, but rather is copied, and then erased from the origin mailbox. That requires updating the Envelope Index to keep track of where the message is, and should keep track of where it is supposed to have been removed after the "Move".

  • Installed OS X 10.5.6 AND NOW MAIL DOES NOT WORK

Installed the newest operating system and Mail does not send or receive messages from the .mac/mobile me account. In fact there are no old messages in any of the folders (inbox, sent, junk, drafts, or trash). New messages can be read and sent online but nothing through Mail.
I have deleted the account and added it new again in preferences. I have deleted Mail and reinstalled it. I have made sure the account is "Online" and still nothing. Activity shows no progress and Connection doctor says I am connected to both incoming and outgoing mail servers. Help?!!

I am not sure what your attempts to fix this may have created, but the original issue may be what is discussed in:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2537
In addition to the article cited, if you ran 10.3 or earlier prior to upgrading to Tiger, once-upon-a-time, you might also need to remove two files with MessageSorting in their names.
More info, please. Your issue may not be what is targeted by the article, particularly if you could see any messages in any mailbox?

  • Mail does not load the mail after opening with 10.10.3 on macbook air

Mail does not load the mail after opening with 10.10.3 on macbook air

Under Window in the Menu bar select Connection doctor. You will see green to indicate a connection and red to show there is a problem. Except for iCloud account you'll see two entries for each account 1) receiving and 2 SMTP for sending.
If it's red, this usually means it's missing the password.
For Incoming messages, set in the account window, under Account Information tab.
For Outgoing (SMTP) messages, follow these steps:
    EDIT SMTP SETTINGS
In Accounts window > Outgoing Mail Server SMTP:  select to Edit SMTP Server list... from popup.
Select account in the list.(It's not uncommon to find extra SMTP servers listed. When you remove account, Mail does not delete the smtp info. You might need to do some clean up in the list to remove the extras.)
    Under Advanced Tab:
Apple defaults to the default ports (25,465, 587) but some servers prefer a custom port. Check to see what port they recommend. Gmail for example likes 465, Outlook.com 587.
Verify if your server require SSL.
User Name. Enter full email address  eg.  [email protected]
Add password if it is blank.(If you have two step authentication setup, you'll need to get an app specific password  more info)
Open Connection Doctor under Window in the Menu bar.
Do you see green light now for your account SMTP?

  • Question: why mail does not recognize an address book  group

i could not find an address book forum - excuse me if i post here.
an address book group with about 20 names has worked well for a year.
today i added and deleted a few names. now mail does not recognize the name as an email group.
i created a new group with a new name and imported all the names in one block from the non working group. the new group also is not recognized as having email addesses in mail.
my other groups seem to work fine.
i had entourage for awhile and had to rebuild it periodically. do i need to do something similar here.
    thanks

Check the names of your groups that you have this issue with to make sure you don't have any special characters or extra spaces at the beginning or end of the group name.
I just found another posting on the message boards that solved my issues. Someone discovered that they had a blank space in their group name which was causing the error. I didn't have any extra spaces at th end of the group name, but I did have a period in my group name (St. Francis). I removed the period from the group name in address book and now the emails send to that group without the error message.

  • HT201774 my SENT mail does not show up in my iphone

my SENT mail does not show up in my iphone and will not sync with the rest of my mail

IF you are talking about Exchange on Google with Gmail (ie chose exchange and using m.google.com) here is what I did to fix it.
Using your browser, sign into Gmail.  IF, NEAR THE BOTTOM of your folder lists, you have a label(folder) on the left side called "Sent Items" then delete it (mine never had anything in it and i think it's for conversations.)  BTW, I KNOW this is a Junk E-Mail (remember i already deleted my folder) but wanted to show you the drop down and Remove Label option.
Then go to your  Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Exchange -> Mail Folders to Push -> and put a checkbox next to SENT (looks like a paper airplane)
backout, go back into mail -> Exchange -> and you should then see the same paper airplane there.
What was happening with mine was it would show up and then disappear as soon as it synced.  The only thing i can think of is that GMAIL has a folder called SENT xxxxx (that I deleted above) that confused the iPhone and i believe it's for Messages not Mail (via google talk)
Once that was deleted, Voila!  No more missing sent mail.  Also, it has showed up on my iPad again.
    Hope this helps.
