Removing Address Book template Labels

I understand how to add custom labels to address book fields such as "Phone" by using the custom function. But, how do I remove these custom labels?

In AB's preferences select the Template tab. Select the field with the custom label (home fax) and click the minus. Close preferences.
You will now find that, if you make a new card, and edit a phone field, you will not be offered the custom label in the pop-up. Similarly if you edit an existing card's phone field you will not be offered the custom label - except ...
Cards that already have the custom label will still have the custom label, and on those cards if you go to select a label you will still find home fax in the list. You should either delete those fields in the affected cards, or if you want to retain the fax numbers, change the labels to something that won't upset your sync program.
If there are a lot of them you could run an Applescript to do it - feel free to try this one, but note IT IS NOT TESTED (well, it runs, but doesn't do anything on my address book as I haven't any of those labels) so you should backup your address book before trying it. Change the substitute label to anything you fancy.

repeat with ThisPerson in people
repeat with ThisPhone in phones of ThisPerson
if label of ThisPhone is "home fax" then
set label of ThisPhone to "FaxAtHome"
end if
end repeat
end repeat
end tell</pre>

  • Address Book template and Exchange server

We're in the process of upgrading about 250 Macs from OS 9 to Mac OS X 10.4.3 at my work. We're now binding our Mac workstations to the Active Directory and having folks log in against the network. One byproduct of this is that the Apple Address Book now can search/display folks in the Exchange Server's Global Address Book. However, the template that the Address Book uses to display each person's information is pretty limited. We get the full name, LAN ID, a business group, a location/building, a "work" phone number (which is an internal number) and the internal e-mail address. The Global Address Book contains significantly more information than this, including a true local phone number. In Outlook, this field is defined as a "Business 2" phone number. Editing the default Address Book template does not seem to allow any of this additional information to be displayed. Is there somewhere else that we could edit a file so some of these options are mapped correctly to the Apple Address Book?
    -Doug

The template preference should work for you. If you hit the green + button you can add fields with all kinds of different default names. If those field names don't match your needs you just select the field name (the bold typeface one) and scroll down in the resulting box and use the "custom" field to add any title you wish. It should change the name of that field to the name you wish to use and that will match the named fields you all area already used to using. You can do this with any field so you should be able to match any fields you wish.
I hope I understand your question correctly. If not...sorry.

  • Address Book template-to-display oddity..

(Hi! I first posted this query in the Leopard>Mail and Address Book Discussions, but there's been no response there, so I thought that there might be a greater chance of a response from those with Tiger experience and expertise..)
I've spent three-quarters-of-an-hour searching through previous posts to see if this has appeared as a problem before, but can't find any mention here in Leopard nor Tiger Discussions..
I'm asking on behalf of my beloved, who's tearing her hair..
She's created an Address Book Template (Address Book>Preferences>Template) and has successfully imported records from Filemaker (by using 'Address Book Importer').
HOWEVER, although she's created (or renamed) fields in the Address Book template, such as
    home page
    birthday
    last changed
    Data in/change
    C1
    C2
    work done
    practitioner
    etcetera (..those C1 and C2 are Comment fields..) nevertheless when data's been imported (and it does all import OK!) some of the fields shown in her Address Book cards are displayed in a different order.. e.g;
    home page
    birthday
    last changed
    Data in/change
    C1
    work done
    Admin info
    category
    flat
    C2
..etcetera. In other words, the C2 field, for instance, is displayed far further down the fields list than it is in her template, where it sits just beneath C1!
This doesn't seem to be based on some peculiar alphabetical or alphanumeric sorting of the fields or the data within them, and when all fields have data in them then that re-ordering is consistent ..e.g; C2 is always separated from C1 by having 'work done', 'Admin info', 'category' and 'flat' between them. ("Flat" is an address field; in the UK "flat" means "apartment".)
We don't seem to be able to find any re-ordering facility which would bring back the display into the same order as the template.
Is there such a facility to re-order the display, apart from re-ordering the template on a kind of hit-&-miss basis until it sticks properly in the cards display? ..And has anyone else come across - and solved? - this problem of fields being arbitrarily(?) re-ordered in the display?
    Many thanks in advance..!

  • Are there address book templates for Pages?

Does anyone know of an Address Book template available for Pages?

    I know that.
The question is why would the O.P. want to create their own blank Address Book in Pages?

  • Address Book Template Bug

I think the Address Book is great, except for this one annoying bug I've found with the template...
I've customized the template with extra fields and custom labels e.g. for emails I have "home 1", "home 2", "work 1" etc. and similarly for phone numbers. Now when I create a new address book contact, all these fields and labels are available. But once I have added information to one of the fields (i.e. put an email address in to "home 1") and then saved that contact, when I go back to add another email address (i.e. to put in "work 1"), these custom labels and fields are no longer available. It has reverted back to the original default template labels - "home", "work" and "other". All my custom labels are gone. But if I delete all the email addresses, save and re-open the contact, my custom labels are back?!?
I've spent a lot of time fiddling around with this and decided that it's a fault with the program, unless I'm missing something?
    Macbook Pro C2D 2.33   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Harwood64,
If you think this is a bug you can report it to http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html. Because Address Boook is part of OS X that would be the best venue to report the issue.
BTW because your profile is incomplete no one knows what version of OS X you are running. This is critical because Address Book is changed from version to version of OS X. Please complete your profile, you can find it by clicking Your Stuff (upper right) then click Profile and fill in the pertinent information.

  • Address Book and Label Printing

I've been trying to do this and have run into a sea of problems/bugs.
A lot come to light after switching back and forth between the Layout and Label tabs. This seems to render the preview window inoperative. For example, after choosing print from the file menu then clicking Layout then clicking Label in the Print Dialog Box:
    1) changing font is not reflected in preview pane
    2) clicking "country" check box is not reflected in preview pane
    3) zoom control does nothing
    4) changing label type does not update preview pane
After printing and then trying to print a second time, I notice that some setting are not saved. For example, the Country, if it was checked, has reverted back to being not checked and the font has reverted to Lucida Grande 12. More importantly, the label type reverts back to the default 5161, but only after every second print. (ie choose print from file menu set label type to 2163, print, select print from file menu: label type is 2163, print, select print from file menu again and label type has now reverted to 5161
When selecting a different Label from the layout menu, ie Avery 2163 Top, the Preview Pane is only partially updated. The addresses are relocated on the page but a full 8 1/2X11 page is still shown. if I cancel the Print and return, the preview page size has been resized to reflect the smaller label size.
I've also a great deal of difficulty getting Address Book to print correctly on Avery 2163 labels. These labels are 2" wide and the program seems to want to print on 8 1/2 inch wide paper. As a result, only the left hand portions of the address appear on the label, and even that is not properly spaced vertically to appear correctly within each label. I was able to get it to print correctly only when I selected "Scale to Fit Paper" in the Paper Handling Section
These problems don't seem isolated to my machine (A PowerPC G5). I was able to replicate on an intel imac.
Has anyone else had problems printing labels?

Warren: looking at other threads out there it doesn't appear that you can print the spouse/partner/friend field. One poster suggested using Avery DesignPro for Mac, which merges with your AddressBook, and allows you to select which fields to include.  The only caveat is that it doesn't show it working with Lion (os 10.7).  You can download it here:

    Hope this helps.

  • How can I make Address Book print labels how I want, or export to Word?

I have found a number of serious problems with Address Book, which unless I can overcome them mean it is entirely useless for me. Almost all are to do with creating mailing labels or envelopes:
1.I can't find any way of defining a sheet format for labels different from those on the pre-defined list. My labels are in 2 columns of 8, on a sheet 12” long by 8” wide, margins 0.5mm top and bottom, and ½” left and right. The labels themselves are 3½” x1½”. Address Book can't do it. It is odd that this is so restrictive, whereas with envelopes one has total flexibility.
2.Although I can define which address I want to print on each label or envelope, I can't find a way of defining which field should be used for the first (name) line. It always consists of the First and Last names as recorded on each card. This is not what I want. For different mailings, I want to use different first lines, as in many cases each card is the address of a family group, the First and Last names simply recording the names of the parents e.g., John and Mary Smith. But for my Christmas mailing I want to print 'The Smith Family', whereas for my charity mailshots I want to print 'Mrs Mary Smith', as she is the charity supporter, not her husband or children.
3.The address layout seems to be fixed, with each element on a separate line. This is not how I want to print, as in some cases it makes for too many lines, particularly on labels. I want to put the zip/post-code on the same line as the county or state, separated by about ½”. But I can't see how to dictate the layout at all. On labels there is a further problem, in that I can't define a vertical and/or horizontal off-set for the text.
4.The Country does not print at all on labels, making the application quite useless for foreign mailings, and I can't find a way of overcoming this. Over half our mailing addresses are affected by this.
    5. And another problem really puts the final cherry on the icing of this cake: There is no way I can find of exporting the data from the address book in a format, e.g. a csv file, that I can bring into a word processor where I could do these mailings how I want them. Not only does the box fail to do what I need, it is also locked.
I don't understand why, having set up Address Book on the database principle that one should have have to record each contact only once no matter how many ways one needs to use the data, it seems it has then been implemented in a way that prevents it being used in one of the most obvious ways, to print addresses in a format of the user's choice.
The Applecare adviser tells me the problems I have can't be overcome. Is that right, or is she, and I missing something? Please help.

"It's Christmas card time again and the fact that Address Book is useless for this purpose is really frustrating."
While I sympathise with the functionality of Address Book, I'm old-fashioned enough to write my cards and envelopes by hand (shock! horror!) and get quite p***-off to receive bulk-printed stuff.
    Just a thought, peeps.
It'd be all too easy to follow that up with a cheapshot making reference to how many Christmas cards you have to send, but I'll rise above that and explain that some of us might want to use this for business contacts and have 300+ cards to address.
It is a shame that the printing feature from Address Book is so close, yet so far from performing this simple task. It is a shame that Pages can run mail merge, but only for one record per page (which is useless for label printing). It is also a shame that MS Word for Mac does proper labels but doesn't recognise Address Book as a datasource.
These things are all a shame because with Apple's software, you rather expect things to "just work", as per their advertising, and when very simple things don't "just work", it difficult not to feel cheated.

  • How to delete a custom field created in Address Book template?

It is possible to create a new custom field name in any of the pop-up field categories in the preferences template for Address Book.
But, once created, there does not seem to be a way to delete or edit the newly created custom field name. That doesn't make sense.
Tell me that I am wrong, and then tell me how to delete or edit a custom field name. Thanks!!

Thanks Pascal, I can change the viewed template field areas as you have described. My problem was with modification of the pop-up list entries: adding, deleting, and renaming user created custom field entries. I have since figured out how Address Book allows these functions; unfortunately, that specific information is not present in the Address Book help file.

  • Add 2nd address line to Address Book template

This question was asked back in December (by another user) but got no answers, so I'm going to try again.
From the original post: "How can I add an a second address line to the address book "address" template? Many of my contacts have multiple line addresses. For example, 1st line = department and mailstop, second line = street address.
I can see how to add other information to the "global template" such as job title and birthday... how do I go about getting some flexibility from the address record?"
    Here's hoping!

I'm not sure if there is a way to add an Address2 field, but if you are typing the in Address field and press enter, you will start a new line just below the Address filed. It is still technically one field, but will appear as two lines, hopefully giving you the desired result.

  • Remove address book from ipod

When I first got my iPod, iTunes copied my addressbook and calendar on it. I turned that off later because I didn't want to waste the space. However, the address book is still on the iPod. It hasn't been updated but the old copy is still there. I would appreciate any help in removing it!
Also, in the breakdown for storage in the iPod, I have 19mb in Other. Is there anyway to see what this is and remove anything that I don't want? I tried turning on the disk to see what was on the iPod but it didn't show anything but 3 empty folders.

You say that your iPod still hasn't been updated...try updating your iPod to see if it removes the address book. Also, double check and make sure that the address book was turned off in iTunes. It may have inadvertantly not gone through...
As for the "other" on your iPod...these are system files that are on the iPod naturally (when first purchased). This will also increase if you add album artwork. Also note that when you look in the iPod folder Apple has some of the files "hidden" so you wouldn't see them all unless you set your computer to show hidden files. I wouldn't suggest messing with the system files. If you have album artwork and really don't want them using up space on your iPod remove the "add album artwork to iPod" option in iTunes (with the iPod connected) so that they won't be synced. Please note that album artwork doesn't really take up a lot of space so it won't free up a huge amount of space. But it's up to you.

  • New Address Book Template Won't Work on My Address Card

My personal address card on my mac address book keeps listing my work phone numbers and email addresses first in each list and thus uses those numbers whenever I user Safari's autofill.
I changed the address card template so that home phone number and email addresses are the first item on the card, but this change does not work on my card in the address book. I even created an entirely new card for myself (with the proper field order) and then marked the card as mine and it automatically moved my work contacts to the top of the list. This is real annoying.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance

  • Editing the Address Book template

Can I make multiple templates, for different categories? Such as a template for individuals and a template for companies.
Also, how do I change the order in which the fields appear?

To me this is such an obvious missing feature that I've been asking Apple for it for years. Perhaps you should too: http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
I was searching here wondering if someone had written an Address Book plugin to enable additional and modified templates.

  • Address Book template drops fields

I'm trying to set up my address book for our local artists' association so it includes special fields that will contain information on dues paid this year (field=YWA) and participation in an annual art show (field= SAT).
First, I have a lot of artists already entered, but since entering them I have realized I must change the basic template. I've changed the basic template, but when I click "Edit" for an individual artist, the original template comes up, which doesn't have the fields I've added.
So I create a new template and reenter the artist, but half way through going back and forth between the old entry and the new entry on the revised template, the revised template drops the fields I've created and I'm back to ground zero. Sometimes even less than zero: fewer fields than the original template had.
Is this just an awful bug? It renders the address book useless...
Is there a solution to this, short of going back to Now Contact? Or is there another Address Book that works? Is there any way to import contacts into a new template without having to copy and paste each field again?

    Update:
I am using Exchange 2010 for address book. Problem seems to be that you can't edit the photos or the template default when editing a card.
Works fine for any contact on my mac address book, but not on Exchange.
Anyone else with the same issue?

  • Address Book - mailing label confusion

Background: I imported my contacts from outlook 2003 some time ago and formed a number of virtual groups.. one important one.. xmas card list.
I am finding a huge inconsistency from contact to contact regarding the printing of SPOUSE name in the label. One time it prints "Joe Jones and Sarah" the next time it prints nothing. For the contacts with the first example, I have to type the spouse name " & spouse" in the first name box and delete the "spouse" entry in the address card. For many of the entries where the spouse has a different last name, I get the correct entry on the label ( tom jones and jill smith ), then for some the only way I can get the second name is to enter it after the last name of the entry ( tom ... Jones and Jill Smith)
I'm working my way through the list, but this isn't a good long term fix.
Is there some way to clean this up???
    thanks,
    Tom O'Connell

That article is inconsistent; first saying:
    {quote}These related names will appear on the label or envelope if no card exists for the related name, or if another card exists for the related name which contains the same address as the card you are printing.{quote}
    Then:
    {quote}To ensure that the related name will get printed, create a card with the same name as the related name, and include the same address as the card you are printing.{quote}
So even though I have a number of cards of people and spouses (different last names) and those spouses do not have separate cards at all, I'm supposed to create new cards for all of the spouses, children, etc., with the same address, "to ensure that the related name will get printed". What a crock. What happens when they move - I have to remember to change multiple cards?
Edited to add: It appears to me that Address Book will only print the spouse, child, parent, etc., if there's +no other cards+ with the same first name, regardless of whether the address matches or not. This doesn't seem to be correct.

  • Adding Address2 line into the Address Book template

Need to add Address2 for Suite numbers in the address book. How is this accomplished?

You can use the return key in Line 1 to have a 2-line address. Doing this doesn't move you to a new field. Presumably you can add a third line in a similar way. This is often needed with UK addresses which are many lines long.
This is of course not a change in the template, just in typing the entry.
