Removing DV artifacts

what do you recommend to remove artifacts from dv compression (AVCHD) - something in premiere, after effects or a 3rd party plug in?

> what do you recommend to remove artifacts from dv compression (AVCHD) - something in premiere, after effects or a 3rd party plug in?
First, your question contains an important error: DV compression is a very specific kind of compression, and it's not the kind of compression used in AVCHD media.
But, I'll assume that what you're really asking is the more general question of how to remove the block artifacts that come along with all MPEG-based compression methods.
The answer depends on how bad the artifacts are and how good you need the results to be.
For example, if you're trying to remove blockiness just so that you can pull a better blue-screen key from the footage, you can just use Channel Blur and blur the blue channel, since the worst blockiness is in the blue channel.
If you need something better than that, then tell us what your requirements are and show a screenshot of the footage that you're dealing with.

  • CS5 - Reduce Noise Filter/Remove JPEG Artifact

    Hi,
I'm using 64 bit Photoshop CS5. Something odd happens when I open the Reduce Noise Filter and select Advanced and then put a check in the box for Remove JPEG Artifact. Once I do this, if I do anything else, two sliders appear below the line for Remove JPEG Artifact. The sliders aren't labeled or titled and are disabled. I can't seem to find and explanation as to what these might be for and why they don't appear until after you do something else within the filter after checking Remove JPEG Artifact. Any info or ideas appreciated.

These seem to be drawing artifacts where the sliders from the "Per Channel" tab are not correctly hidden because the filter is not drawing the tabs in correct order. I can repro it on my system as well. Well, one more for the Adobe devs to fix, but nothing to worry about.

  • Question about kicker and best keying greenscreen techniques for removing small artifacts

    Hi,
At the moment I'm doing some green screen shootings.
The only problem I encounter is the fact that when I make a total shot from a actor the backlighting stand is visible between their legs.
I have no possibility to hang the backlighting above the actors.
What is the best technique to remove such small artifacts?!
    Thanks! David

It sounds like a simple mask drawn around the stand will do the trick. A screenshot would help but from your description I'd just use the pen tool to draw around the offending object then set the mask mode to subtract. If the actors move you'll have to animate the mask position. The only critical part of the mask would be right next to the actors legs. You can leave lots of room around the object.

  • Removing Fringe/Artifacts

I have about 1,000 PNG pics, created from JPG's with a white background. When the background was removed, most objects came out very clear; however, about 300 (mostly reds and blues) have white artifacts around the very edges. I've tried using Defringe, Remove White Matte, Refine Edges and Modify/Contract, and nothing seems to work...except manual removal using the eraser.
Has anyone got any suggestions that I might attempt that would be more automated than to manually erase 300 pics!!

  • Removing noise & artifacts from FCP audio?

I got an email today from iZotope, a company I was familiar with from working with Logic Pro.
The link contained a video tutorial for removing noise using their plug-in RX: Denoiser. I was impressed.
    http://www.izotope.com/support/videos.asp
I know that I'm going to need to deal with this issue. Has anyone used them for this purpose? Are there better tools available that are not outrageous in price?

Soundsoap Pro from BIAS works well. It is a complicated application and demands a fair understanding of how audio works to get the best results from it. If you are willing to spend the time, you can get very good results.
Soundsoap Pro can be run from within Soundtrack Pro or other VST/AU aware audio programs. I use it with PEAK.
If you want a one step process, Soundsoap 2 may be what you are after. I believe it runs as a standalone app and will do an OK job with simple noise.
I've tried Soundtrack's remove noise filter and find it slow and not as effective or as controllable as SSP.
    Have fun.

  • How can I remove artifacts when using 3D Extrude & Bevel?

    Hi All,
I don't have much experience in Illustrator, and I'm experiencing an issue with the 3D Extrude & Bevel effect. Namely, there are "artifacts" where the anchor points lie on the paths.
    Here's a sample:
You may need to zoom in on this image to see them, but there are thin white lines that bisect the extrusion where the anchor points lie. There are also abrupt changes in the appearance of the extrusion at these same points. These anomalies don't appear in Illustrator, and it's only when I convert to an image or PDF that they show up.
Is there any way to remove these artifacts using this effect? And if not, is there a different (better?) way to achieve the same effect?
Thanks in advance, and I'll be happy to provide more info if need be.
    Sam

    Hi Kurt,
I'm using version CS3. I'll be happy to provide the .ai file, but I'm not sure how to do it. I'm not seeing any options for adding an attachment. Please let me know how to go about doing it, and I'll follow up.
    Thanks,

  • Camera Raw 7.1 Columnar Color Artifacts

Adobe:  For some reason you wouldn't listen when these problems were reported during beta and you went ahead and released the new version, so I'm not sure I should even bother, but here goes:
Camera Raw 7.1 introduces columnar artifacts in the red color channel (that I've seen), apparently as a result of the operation of the new half-baked defringing features.  I've seen this in a number of images.
Here's a raw Canon EOS-40D file and associated XMP with which you can reproduce the problem. Look at the red channel in the blue water of the pool.
    http://Noel.ProDigitalSoftware.com/ForumPosts/IMG_5037.zip
Now convert the same file with version 7.0 (or 7.1 with the Defringe sliders set to 0) and compare the result.
Trouble is, without being able to use the Defringe (Purple/Green) features at all, and considering the Defringe:  All Edges feature has been removed, edge artifacts from the debayering process get to be unacceptable.
Let me spell out for you what you need to do, in case it isn't obvious:
    1.  You need to bring back the Defringe:  Off / Highlight Edges / All Edges feature that you had in 7.0 and earlier.
    2.  You need to fix this new slider-based defringe facility so that it doesn't do such nasty things to the image. I'd advise you to listen to Vit Novak's input on what else to do to it.
With BOTH of these things done, between the two one could actually hope to get an improved result over the conversions from 7.0.  Fixing the second alone won't cut it.
    -Noel

Back off?  I should heed your expert advice on avoiding confrontation, Jeff?    I have to assume by your unwavering support of Adobe on this issue that you are looking forward to having stylish artifacts like these in your own images.  I guess this will define your new style for 2012.  LOL
All the slack that's going to be cut on this has already been cut.
Hey, I could have just quietly dropped back to 7.0 and just have my own images be superior to those made by those using 7.1, but no - I chose to try to help Adobe by pointing out a problem to them here.
When I reported this problem during the beta, I was clearly ignored.  When I reported it again after the release, I was argued-with.
I don't need to be argued-with nor reasoned-with - Adobe needs to listen to people who know what they're talking about.  People not blindly praising the emperor's new clothes.
I don't need nor expect appreciation, but I had thought I might have earned enough respect around here that Adobe's first response wouldn't be "choose different settings, stupid".
An output image quality problem should be a release show-stopper. Experts like me and Vit telling Adobe that their latest color fringing reduction changes aren't working well enough should be considered seriously. Instead, it's just business as usual: Release whatever's in the pipeline.
Adobe's dropping quality standards are something I find myself wanting less and less to be associated with each passing day.
Just typing this message took me longer than it should have, because of this bogus forum software.
There's a difference between leadership and "too big to fail" thinking.
This is my last post in this thread.  Thanks for your participation.

  • Cleaning up artifacts around video frame edges

Long story short (and one I don't have all the technical details about), when recording DVCPROHD 1080p/24pA to P2 cards using a Panasonic HVX200, a strange flashing line artifact appears every four frames at the very top of the frame. Here's a quick GIF animation of two frames, one with the line, the other without (click to view in a pop-up):
It's really distracting, and while I can crop this out for either web or DVD delivery, it's not really possible for BR. What I'm trying to do is figure out a good way to clean up or remove this artifact.
I found Pixelan Clean Crop, and downloaded the demo; it works well. It basically blends a few lines together to effectively mask the flashing line. I'll buy this if necessary, but would prefer to do this with already-available plugins or techniques, if possible.
I've also successfully masked the line using the CC Simple Wire Removal effect (copied CycoreFX from AE), and by using the frame offset option along with Hold keyframes, I can mask this. However, it kills real time playback almost immediately.
Does anyone have any efficient or creative ways of eliminating this type of artifact using what's already available in Premiere? Or should I just pony up the cash for the Pixelan plugin and call it good?

Does the "effect" only cover the pixels of the dark bar or does it actually extend further down the image as seen in the gif example?
I assume by "effect" you're referring to the artifact? Truthfully, the sample above is a bit distorted; I blew up the portion of the frame where the artifact appears, so it looks much larger than it is in reality. Here's an unprocessed frame right from a clip:
In the top left corner, running about a third of the way to the right, you'll see a pink line. There is also another pink line on the scan line above that that runs all the way across the frame. This flickers continuously, every fourth frame, which coincides with the 2:3:3:2 pulldown rate. If it was consistent, it wouldn't be that big of an issue (though still not right), but the flickering is so evident that eventually that's all you see!
maybe you could consider Instant HD to resize the clips marginally.  I think it would do a great job on it.
Thanks for the recommendation; fortunately, the Pixelan CleanCrop effect fixed this up easily, at a bargain basement price. Rendered reasonably quickly too.
BTW - I have never seen this issue in my PAL HVXs (202)
Of course not--you don't have to suffer the ignomies of NTSC video! Since you've got those even integer frame rates that not only divide into each other nicely, but also don't require any of this pulldown nonsense, you're good to go. Always gotta be somethin'...

  • Crawly artifacts in footage fixes?

I have some older footage shot on tape in SD on a green screen. I'm not sure of the process of how the vendor got it from tape to digital, but they told me it was the highest quality footage they had. When I pull it into Ae, it's got alot of crawly artifacts on his suit and hair, as seen here:
Actually the compression that adobe put on the image you can hardly see them in this image, but believe me they are there. What can you do with that? I've tried curves, to crush the blacks a little, and that helps, but is there a better solution?

What I see is typical interlacing artifacts from tape captured by a video card. I also see what could be DV color compression artifacts. They can be fixed in a number of ways. The first thing to check is interlacing.
First, make sure that the video is interlaced and that the fields are properly separated. The easiest way to do this is to drop the footage in the new composition icon at the bottom of the project panel or select the footage in the project panel and select Create New Comp from selection.
Open up the interpret footage panel and set separate fields. if the footage is NTSC and 480 pixels high it's likely lower field first. If it's PAL it's likely upper field first. AE may have already made an educated guess.
With the composition open open up the composition settings and double the frame rate by selecting it, moving the cursor to the right and typing in *2.
Now step through the comp one frame at a time and check movement of the edges. There should be two distinct frames all moving in the right direction. You can use the page up or page down keys or Cmnd/Ctrl + Right or Left arrow keys.
If there are two distinct frames and the footage is moving in the right direction then the fields are properly separated. If the action goes back and forth, one frame to the right and the next to the left then the fields are separated in the wrong order. If you have 2 duplicates and then 3 or 2 duplicates and 1 in any kind of pattern then the footage has had 3:2 pulldown introduced. You'll have to remove that. Let me know if you think there's 3:2 pulldown. If there is, then I'll help you fix that.
Here's the worst case scenario, duplicate pairs of frames. This means that someone took interlaced footage, didn't properly separate fields, then rendered the footage as progressive. If that is the case then you'll have to figure out how to minimize the effects in other ways.
Now let's deal with the color artifacts from DV 4:2:0 color compression. What happens is that the luminance data in a DV signal is sampled a pixel for a pixel, but the color sampling gives you 4 pixels for every color value. There are some plug-ins that can help remove these artifacts. You can do it yourself by duplicating the footage adding some blur, changing the blend mode of the top copy to blur or overlay, adjusting the levels of the blured copy, pulling your key from a pre-comp if the two layers, and then using that key with some matte choking as a track matte for the original footage.
Here's a thread on DV artifacts. I talk about some of the solutions.
Try looking at your footage at 800%. I think you'll see the artifacts are in 4 pixel blocks.

  • Graphical artifacts when animating scrollRect property in ENTER_FRAME handler?

I tried to animate a drop down menu by assigning a rectangle to the scrollRect property of the menu.
The rectangle's width is fixed, and the height of the rectangle is animated from zero to the final height of the menu over a 250ms interval.
The alterations to the scrollRect originate from a master handler for ENTER_FRAME, which runs a series of registered task functions, one of which is my menu animation function.
As the menu drops down, various areas of the child DisplayObjects, including the background, fail to draw completely.  If I resize the stage at all, then everything is redrawn properly.
Are there any known problems with animating the scrollRect property when:
altering a scrollRect from within an ENTER_FRAME handler
when child objects also have a scrollRect set?
The exact regions that fail to draw are inconsistent each time the menu drops down, but they occur in the standalone player as well as in web browsers such as Firefox and Internet Explorer.
See video here: glitches2.mp4 - Google Drive
It clearly doing something wrong, as evidenced by the redraw regions at the end of the animation (see image).  At the end of the animation, the scrollRect is set to null.  The bottom of the menu is still not updated, and neither is the drop shadow filter on the menu.
Update: The artifacts go away if I set cacheAsBitmap to true: glitchesRemoved.mp4 - Google Drive
Interestingly, they also go away if I remove the dropShadow filter from the background child control and leave cacheAsBitmap off.
Anyway, this problem seems to manifest itself specifically when animating the scrollRect property of an object with cacheAsBitmap set to false that contains a child control with a filter applied.
Here is a final video with everything working.  The drop shadow filter is on the object itself, rather than the background, which sets cacheAsBitmap to true as a side effect:
    glitchesFixed.mp4 - Google Drive

I'm just animating the scrollRect property to achieve a simple clipping effect that reveals the menu.  Once per frame, it updates the scrollRect property, assigning a new rectangle with a height of "p * height", where p is the percentage through the animation (0 to 1).  There is nothing, otherwise, happening to the DisplayObject during the animation of that property.  The DisplayObject's height is not changing, nor are any other properties changing (besides scrollRect), so it's essentially static while it's being revealed.  When the scrollRect's size is increased frame-by-frame, Flash Player is simply failing to render the entire clipped area, almost as though there is a frame lag such that it's rendering the clipped area from the last frame, rather than the new area exposed by the latest value of scrollRect.  When I simply turn on cacheAsBitmap, it renders correctly and completely.  The only "interesting" thing about the menu would be the DropShadowFilter applied to a child, so my best guess is that there's some sort of bug in Flash Player's rendering system involving scrollRects whose size changes when one or more child objects have filters applied (just a guess from what I'm seeing).  To fix it, I moved the DropShadowFilter off the child object and onto the menu itself, which kills two birds by forcing cacheAsBitmap on (removes the artifacts) and also ensures the drop shadow is applied to the clipped area rather than being clipped by the scrollRect.  I'd imagine I could replicate this easily in a simple FLA that I could post, so I 'll try that.
As far as the "sophisticated" nature of the framework, I was primarily referring to its layout engine, in the sense that it's non-trivial, finely-tuned, and powerful compared to existing offerings. There are no Stage3D effects; I ruled out using that years ago when I was seeing graphical artifacts throughout the display list whenever any 3D effects were applied (even setting DisplayObject.z to zero), because it seemed to change something about the overall rendering mode.  For example, I took these screenshots in 2010 and posted them to the bugbase:
What started off as a slight offset that appeared when 3D rendering was active, turned into very obvious glitches at the edges of objects, as revealed in the latter two images; the random speckles of color and the yellow lines at the bottom and right edges of the button are not supposed to be there. (The striped lines in the overall background are supposed to be there; they are part of a "circle splash" shader filter that collapsed in from the edges of the screen making it look like the background is being eaten by the event horizon of a black hole, haha.)
Anyway, the MenuTest.mp4 video I posted is actually using off-screen rendering to BitmapData via DisplayObject.draw, along with the application of a blur and tinting for the glass effect.  The real-time ripple effect is rendered with an animated ShaderFilter I wrote with PixelBender.

  • VHS Tape artifacts

Using Finalcut Pro 5. How can I remove tape artifacts from the bottom of a clip I recorded from a VHS tape?
At the very bottom of each clip this is scratching like the tape was damaged.

You can help reduce these issues - some of which have to do with frame timing in analog video - by inserting a time based correcter (TBC) between the VHS video source and your digitizing device.
Do a quick search on the B&H website and you'll find a bunch. However, most of these are not designed for consumer use. If you are going to do VHS capture regularly but not with access to professional equipment, you may want to look into something like the canopus advc-300 to do your conversions for you. It has TBC as well as the usual circuitry to convert analog to DV.
    good luck.

  • Weird artifacts after awaking from hibernation

    Hi,
I noticed recently with my 2013 13" MBA after recovering from hibernation my screen has artifacts. After awaking from hibernation (deep sleep), the log in screen is completely fuzzy. And artifcates on the screen and icons.
This only happens after awaking from deep sleep and not regular sleep.
All these fuzziness disappears after I restart the system. However, after I start the system, all default mac icons disappears, in the menu bar and in applications like Finder and Mail.
I figured out that I can reboot into Safe Mode to recover the icons. However, I would have to repeat these steps everytime my MBA wakes from hibernation in order to remove the artifacts and recover the icons.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

I did two things and that seems to mitigate the problem (not fully solved yet, unfortunately). I did both things together but I am not sure if both are necessary – perhaps you only need to perform one of them.
Performed a deep clean of the caches. I used Lion Cache Cleaner but you can use any other tool.
Installed the MacBook Pro Video Update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1469.
Performing those steps seem to have solved the weird dashboard display and the window straddling problem. However, the Application Switcher (command-tab) problems still occurs.
Two other observations that I have:
I think that there is some relation with this problem and the dynamic switching between the integrated Intel and NVIDIA graphics. I notice (by checking using gfxStatusCard application) that as long as I am running on the Intel graphics the problem does not happen. Once I start using an application (for me that would be Keynote, Path Finder or NetNewsWire) that switches to the NVIDIA graphics card the problem happens.
Because I am on a MacBook Pro mid-2010, I think my problem might be related to the NVIDIA graphics problem that plagued the early version of Lion. You can find out more at this ARS Technica article. I suspect that the issue was never fully addressed by the later updates to Lion.

  • GPU-version of Gaussian Blur sometimes produces visible ringing artifacts on high contrast images

    Hi,
I noticed some annoying ringing artifacts in my footage after applying the GaussianBlur() from the PrSDKGPUImageProcessingSuite.
I assume the blur implementation is the same as in the 'Gaussian Blur' Video Effect. So I tested with that effect standalone and was able reproduce the problem.
The ringing artifacts appear in high contrasted footage (see screenshots) and only with the GPU-version of the blur.
Switching to software-only renderer and therefore enforcing the CPU-version of the effect removes the artifacts.
Has anybody already noticed this issue?
    Regards,
    Philipp
    Gaussian Blur (CPU) without artifacts:
    Gaussian Blur (GPU) with artifacts:

The "blocky" details are easily reproduced in that image.  Looks like something that needs to be tuned up to me.
Note that you have the option of choosing the 2003 process in Camera Raw, which appears to avoid that issue.
I just want to add one thing:  There's no upsampled resolution available for this particular camera.  6048 x 4032 is the largest size available.  I for one prefer to convert my raw files directly to upsampled resolutions on the theory that it might improve this kind of thing (and it does seem to deliever more accurate detail with my now out-of-date Canon cameras).  At some point in the past I requested that Camera Raw make several upsampled resolutions available beyond the "native" camera size for any/all cameras.  I hereby renew that request.

  • What sequence settings should I use with multiple formats?

I'm starting a new project in CS6 that's using multiple types of video.  I've got old camcorder video from 20 years ago...as well as digital video...and current HD video.  I want all the video in the sequence to output as full screen.  So do I need to use the 720 x 480 settings to accommodate the old camcorder video?  Or will that mess up my new HD stuff?  Thanks.

First you need to force Premiere to interpret the camcorder files as widescreen. So highlight all the camcorder files from the project panel, right-click and select Modify -> Interpret Footage. Then change the pixel aspect ratio to "D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121)".
Next you need to upscale the camcorder files to the HD project window size. So after you drop them on to your timeline... highlight one or more of them, right-click and select "Scale to Frame Size".
Finally you may want to fine tune it to remove edge artifacts or borders. There's a few ways to do this but the quickest would be to just slightly increase the Scale settings in the effects control panel. Once you have a good look, you can just copy and paste the scale settings to all the other clips on the timeline.
Alternatively, you can use Red Giant Instant HD to do the up-scaling as I'm sure it do a much better job.
