Rendering advice in CS3

I have sort of an obscure question.  I'm about to submit a feature length animated film to a film festival.  They use Withoutabox to upload the film submissions so they can review them.  I'm filling out a lengthy submission package right now and am waiting on some information to finish it.  I have yet to find any details though on what the file size restrictions are for the digital copy I'm going to upload.  I have a feeling the digital version I have on my desktop right now will be too big so I'm looking ahead for advice on what render setting I should use to get a decent quality film with a small file size.  Quality is important obviously cuz this is the version that it will be judged by...but I also need to be able to upload it without blowing up their server lol.
I realize this is an odd question to ask when I don't yet know exactly how big or small the file needs to be but I previously had a lot of rendering trouble that wasted a lot of time and I don't have the time before the deadline to waste on rendering trials and errors.  If I find out I do indeed need to rerender it I wanna be able to try it ASAP and I'd like to know my best options.

Do they say what frame size they want?  If it's suitable for iPod or iPhone or other mobile device, you can use H.264 with a bit rate around 1.5  Mbps  (like Apple does).  If you need full HD at 1920x1080 then you'll need Blu-ray type bit rates of about 20 - 25 Mbps (or higher).
Obviously, 2 hours of feature film at 1.5 Mbps will be a much easier file to move around than one created at 25 Mbps.
NB: Bit rate and duration are the only factors that affect file size.  Frame size doesn't affect it at all.  The only thing frame size affects is whether a particular bit rate will look good or not.

  • Program settings advice for CS3 Prod Premium on Vista 64-bit

    I need advice to optimize my PC for CS3 Production Premium after a clean re-install of Vista 64-bit. I am on a new HP Pavilion d5000t desktop with Quad core 2.66 and 8GB RAM. I got the PC in August, and began having problems from the start. I don't know if it was the computer or CS3.
    I was having performance issues and numerous freezes. Failures were mostly in Encore, but also in the other CS3 apps. I got no error messages telling me what was wrong. They simply stopped working" and forced shutdowns. I did plenty of Vista's diagnostics tests but never isolated the cause. After doing a couple of editing jobs, I had cache folders and previes files everywhere.
    I now have the computer back to factory condition. It has some neat features and programs, but I probably don't need a lot of it. Norton Security, games, Windows Defender, consumer photo and video apps, and others. However, I am afraid to uninstall or disable anything because I won't know what I'm doing. I had existing jobs in progress before I backed up my files onto an extarnal drive.
    I am about to re-install CS3 and restore my backup. I need help setting up scratch disks and other settings. I have no idea how to set up Version Cue or Bridge for file management. The factory system drive is a 2-drive RAID 0 1TB total and is probably the most capable, but I don't know if I should store all my video on there. It used to be you had to separate the system drive from the content storage, but I don't know if that's still the case. Apart from the factory drives, I plan to install two more internal 250 GB SATA drives, an external 1 TB Buffalo drive with triple interface. I also have a MyBook and a Maxtor OneTouch 4 external, both 500 GB. I work primarily with MiniDV video.
    Please somebody send me a good configuration plan so I won't get confused again. Thanks.

  • After Effects "Output Module" render error & rendering advice

    Hi all,
    I've been working on an AfterEffects project for a few weeks and never had a problem with rendering it before, but in the past few days it has started giving me error messages every time I start a render.
    After rendering about 48 - 60 frames of a 2 minute long composition (it doesn't seem to hang in the same place every time), the render freezes and I get this error message:
    After Effects error: An output module stopped responding. The file may be damaged or corrupted. You may need to restart After Effects.
    The project is really huge -- about 1022 3D layers, mostly all created in Photoshop, as well as some Quicktime movies. Motion blur is turned on for everything. Although the project is big, I have a 3D camera that animates through the scene, so not all the layers are onscreen at all times.
    I haven't added anything significant to the composition lately, I've just been adjusting keyframes, so that would lead me to believe the render isn't failing because of a corrupted element.
    I'm using Adobe After Effects CS5, Version 10.0.2.4. I have some 3rd party plug-ins installed (Trapcode, Magic Bullet Looks, Optical Flares), but I'm not using any 3rd party effects on this project, though I plan to in the future.
    I'm running the project on a 2 x 2.66 Ghz 6-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro with 14 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM, using OS X version 10.6.8.
    Here is some information about my project:
    1280 X 720, Square Pixels, 23.976 Frame Rate, Rendering Plug-in: Advanced 3D. For my preferences, I don't have "render multiple frames simultaneously" checked, and I keep 4 GBs of RAM reserved for other applications. I also have OpenGL disabled.
    And finally, here are some screenshots of my Render Settings and Output Module for this project:
    I'd really appreciate any feedback or advice on how to troubleshoot this error. And I'd also love to hear if the experts on this board have render settings tips or advice on how to set up my render preferences for my particular machine.
    Thanks and hope all is well,
    Dan

    Hey Dan,
    Really nice post in regards to info provided initially. It's rare to see that these days.
    The weird thing in your screen shots that I see, is that in your Output Module Settings, the audio bit-depth settings seem to be grayed out for some reason. Are you using some sort of audio hardware that is customized, or perhaps some compressed audio in your project? Here's what I mean:
    Thoughts? Aside from that, your project does sound as if it is pretty intensive, so I'm sure the problem could be occuring elsewhere...

  • Valid svg file not rendered properly Illustrator CS3: Place or File open messes up svg

    Hi I have a svg file for a chemical molecule that is validated as valid SVG by the w3c validator. Firrefox, google chrome and inkscape , as well as other svg applications open and render the file just fine.
    However adobe illustrator renders the characters in the file some 600% bigger than they need to be.
    This seems to be a bug in the svg rendering , given that the svg file works in the other programs mentioned. Can anyone tell me how to get the molecule read in correctly into Adobe Illustrator
    . I am attaching a screenshot of the molecule as read into Adobe Illustrator and the svg file itself. I am using Adobe Illustrator CS3 on Windows XP
    Thanks

    w3c validation report:
    The uploaded document "adenosine.svg" was successfully checked as SVG 1.1+IRI, XHTML5+ARIA plus MathML 2.0 (experimental). This means that the resource in question identified itself as "SVG 1.1+IRI, XHTML5+ARIA plus MathML 2.0 (experimental)" and that we successfully performed a formal validation using an SGML, HTML5 and/or XML Parser(s) (depending on the markup language used).

    If svg is not a reliable format for this purpose I need to use eps or ps or pdf as the format for the content.
    SVG is "reliable", you just need to make it Illustrator SVG, which much to the chagrin of most users is a completely different thing than web-compliant SVG. Hence people use Inkscape as an intermediate workflow in such cases. If you simply save the file from AI, you can easily see what changes it makes and how it likes the formatting and entities so if you have control over the source code of your app, I don't see what would be the difficulty an adjusting it??? I mean, EPS and PDF won't negate that fact, either - to render correctly in AI, it needs to follow its somewhat odd way of handling some format specs. You could produce a PDF that is 100% perfect as per the spec, but it could still look like crap in AI, so I'm realyl not sure what you are trying to prove here...

  • Hardware Rendering=broken preview (CS3)

    Hey guys, im new to the forums, but I've recently encountered some strange behavior. I used to have dual monitors setup but only used one in bridge(didnt use the other for previews) and i was able to use hardware rendering just fine. Then i moved and i left the second monitor off and then images started displaying in a weird section of the preview pane, and part of it is translucent.
    I enabled software rendering and it fixed the issue(as per in the support site, it said dual monitors can cause this) but the rendering is a bit slow.
    How can i get it back working like it used to with hardware rendering?
    Computer is:
    Athlon 64 x2 6000+(3.01~ghz)
    4gb DDR2 667
    512 DDR3 Vram(ATI Radeon HD 3850 chip, with recently updated driver)
    1tb WD Barracuda boot/cs3 installed on
    640GB WD Green Scratch disk
    Thanks in advance
    -Josh

    This is a hardware issue from the video card or driver.  You say you updated the driver and if this this the latest one prehaps the old one you had worked better.  Migtht try rolling back to the version where it worked.  If this does  not work you might have to replace the video card for something faster.

  • Slow rendering compared to CS3

    I'm sure this has been addressed somewhere in this forum already, but was hoping for any new suggestions.
    In a nutshell..simple renders and exports to wmv/quicktime/ etc. of mostly :30 second clips, with not a lot of transistions or effects take an enormous amount of time. Frequently almost an hour in AME..same clips in 32 bit cs3 a couple of minutes. Longer times with maximum render quality checked, which I would expect. Any help appreciated. I'm wondering if  Windows 7 might be a part of the problem, but have tried all the tricks to improve performance. I must be missing something..realize that the 4600 card is not Mercury enabled.
    Thanks in advance.

    CS5 has been optimized to use SSE4.1+ instruction sets to the max, much more that with CS3. Now this is guessing, because I just don't know the intricacies of CSx, but it may well be that optimizing that code can have negative effects on the performance of CPU's that don't fully support SSE, meaning AMD.
    Second, the memory management has been seriously overhauled, and the result is that the page file is used to minimal degrees as long as it can be avoided, but the downside is that latencies when swapping from RAM to VRAM and vice versa increase.
    Now, it all seems incredible that CS5 will be slower than CS3, but there are so many things going on under the 'hood', that it is hard to give a solid and understandable explanation. Maybe Steve can enlighten us a bit, but he pretty busy right now, so you may have to wait a bit.
    FYI, not every new update or version is faster than previous ones. Sometimes the performance decreases because bugs were removed, stability improved, or other not directly discenrible features added.
    Another thing you should not forget is that support for multiple formats has increased significantly, as has added functionality. These were induced by popular demand, but the downside is that it increases the overhead of the program, reducing responsiveness. IMO Adobe should now stop to add esoteric supported formats for mobile phones, mobile toilets, and other not video related gadgets and improve further on the basics. They have done a tremendous job with CS5 and I hope they continue in this way and not spend efforts to accept even more formats.

  • WMV rendered in AE-CS3 looks gray in PowerPoint 2007

    I've been trying to produce a wmv from Adobe After Effects CS3 to insert into a PowerPoint presentation. Both the video and the powerpoint presentation have a white background. The problem is that is seems like no matter how I tweak the settings in the encoder for WMV the colors come out washed out and the white background comes out gray. I've tried making all the whites 253,253,253 thinking maybe it was an issue with the gamut differences between tv and screen, but that didn't help, it's still gray.
    I'm practically pulling my hair out on this one. I thought wmv was suppose to work pretty well with PowerPoint? Are there specific settings I need to tweak somewhere to make this work?

    Actually I already tried that and while it did fix the background issue, it made the rest of the video look bad. From what I've read its not designed for highly animated videos, which mine is, so even at a higher quality it seems to stutter and the images appear to be at a lower color depth.
    Maybe I'm setting it wrong?

  • Need advice re CS3 uninstall

    I just migrated everything from my 2007 MacBook Pro to my new Macbook Pro. One of the apps that came over was Adobe CS3, which won't run on Mountain Lion and I have a copy of CS6 that I bought to install. I intended to uninstall CS3 after the migration but I find I can't uninstall because the stupid Adobe uninstaller will not work. I click on it, I get a dialogue box asking for my admin password, I type it in, and then the box disappears and nothing happens. I don't want to deal with Adobe because the program originally belonged to my brother who got it on an educators discount and then sold me the machine. So when I called Adobe to try to get help with uninstalling, they wanted the email and serial # it was registered under and I said I would have to call them back because I don't know if he will get in trouble over it. I don't know whether to just leave CS3 on the new machine and install CS6 or try one of the 3rd party apps like Appdelete or App Zapper. Any suggestions as to what I should do?

    Clinton, I looked at that on the Adobe site and the instructions say to uninstall the program and THEN use the Cleaner Tool. So I figured it wouldn't work for me. The description is a bit confusing:
    "The Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Suite 6, Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Creative Suite 5 - 5.5, Adobe Creative Suite 4, and Adobe Creative Suite 3 software. The tool can clean up install records for any pre-release (beta) installations of these Creative Suite products. The Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool is designed to not interfere with existing installations of previous versions of Adobe Creative Suite products; it does, however, allow you to remove them as well, if you so choose to."
    It says it is designed not to interfere with existing installations. But then it say it will remove them. Confusing. And what are install records for beta installations?

  • Advice Reinstalling CS3

    Can anyone help please.
    I have CS3 installed and it seems to leak memory as the programme grinds to a halt. System resources suggest I have more than ample ram.
    A recent thread in the forum suggested that this could be a plug-in such as Topaz or Nik which is doing the damage. To test this theory I disabled the add-ins and this had no effect.
    I don't have the problems with CS2 which is still on my system.
    Someone else who also had this problem and reported to the forum was told to install an uptodate patch and this might work. In his c ase it did. In mine not.
    Another suggestion was to install CS4 and this might correct the problems. I have purchased the upgrade and it is ready for installation but I am now advised to start again with a clean reinstallation.
    If anyone has any more intelligence on the matter I would love to hear from you.
    Also I am scared that my legitimately purchased upgrades over the years from LE onwards may not be recogised.
    Question - I have an upgrade disk for version 7, CS, CS2, CS3 and now CS4. With a reinstallation which is the disk I boot from and what precautions should I take regarding licence numbers.

    First, welcome to the forum.
    Second, two references puzzle me. The first is contained here:
    A recent thread in the forum suggested that this could be a plug-in such as Topaz or Nik which is doing the damage
    The second is the reference to "LE." There have been many versions of Pr offered over the years, but I do not recall an LE version. Could have just missed it though.
    Are you talking about Photoshop, or Premiere? I do not think that NIK has ever done a plug-in for Pr, and only PS. If I am correct, and this is a Photoshop question, you'll want to post to the Photoshop Forum. If it is Premiere, about which you're asking, what plug-ins do you have for it?
    Also, other than very slight memory leaks, PrPro CS3 has been reported to be very stable. I'd first look to all other loaded and running Processes in Task Manager>Processes. One, or more, of these is likely your culprit. Now, PS requires far fewer resources, than does PrPro, but it would still be a good idea to trim down all unnecessary running Processes to clean up your system.
    Good luck, and let us know about your running Processes and plug-ins, if you do mean PrPro CS3.

  • Seeking Table alignment advice, Dreamweaver CS3

    Hello,
    Being extremely new to Dreamweaver, I am having trouble resolving an alignment dilemma and hope someone can help.
    I am working on a page wherein I have placed a table with one row and two columns. In the lefthand column I have the title graphic for the page, and in the righthand column have added a "table within a table" where I plan to place a number of images to be viewed by scrolling down the page.
    Would like the title graphic in left-hand column to stay aligned to the top of the page, but each time I add more images to the right-hand column, my title graphic in left-hand column automatically moves down. I would like to keep it static at the top of the page. (hopefully I am being clear enough explaining this).
    Code is as follows:
    <p> </p>
    <table width="936" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="25" cellspacing="25">
      <tr>
        <td width="209"><img src="Images/Portfolio Page/Brochures/brochures.jpg" alt="brochures" width="230" height="388" align="top" /></td>
        <td width="552" valign="top"><table width="450" border="0" cellspacing="5" cellpadding="5">
          <tr>
            <td><img src="Images/Portfolio Page/Brochures/wawauditionapp.gif" alt="sf ethnic dance festival audition application" width="700" height="446" /></td>
          </tr>
          <tr>
            <td><img src="Images/Portfolio Page/Brochures/restaurantinvite.gif" alt="restaurant invite" width="558" height="391" /></td>
          </tr>
          <tr>
            <td> </td>
          </tr>
          <tr>
            <td> </td>
          </tr>
          <tr>
            <td> </td>
          </tr>
          <tr>
            <td> </td>
          </tr>
          <tr>
            <td> </td>
          </tr>
          <tr>
            <td> </td>
          </tr>
          <tr>
            <td> </td>
          </tr>
          <tr>
            <td> </td>
          </tr>
        </table>
    Any insight would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tania

    There are two ways to close (some types of) tags.
    Meta tags in your head for example <meta name="description" content="whatever" />  is a self closing tag.
    Images: <img src="picture.gif" alt="picture" width="360px" height="240px" />  is a self closing tag
    <tr>
        <td>content goes here</td>
    </tr>
    is an example of a manually closed tag set <tr> </tr> and <td> </td>
    If your tag has "/>" at the end of it it doesn't need "</tag>" afterward.
    Headings, paragraphs, and table cells usually aren't self closing.
    When you get your page online, run ti through XHTML validation at http://validator.w3.org/ and you'll see if it is valid.
    Meantime, you can run Commands>Clean up XHTML from your toolbar and it will remove redundant tags, then give you a report of what if cleaned up.

  • Clipping in Photoshop CS3 rendered Differently in Lightroom 1.4.1

    I called Adobe Tech Support in an attempt to get an answer to my question about why Lightroom (version 1.4.1) seems to show more clipping of an image than viewing clipping of the same image in Photoshop CS3 by using a curves adjustment (show clipping box checked). They did not give me a reasonable answer.
    I typically import my images into Lightroom, then make adjustments there, export to CS3 as 16-bit tiffs in ProPhoto RGB Colorspace, then make further color and contrast adjustments in Photoshop. My monitor is calibrated using a Colorvision Spyder2. Color management settings in Photoshop are as follows: ProPhoto RGB Colorspace, US Web Coated (SWOP) v 2, Gray Dot Gain 20%, Spot Dot Gain 20%, Color Management Policies are to preserve embedded profiles for RGB, CMYK, and Gray, profile mismatches are to ask when opening and when pasting, and to ask when opening images with missing profiles; Conversion options are Engine Adobe (ACE), Intent Relative Colormetric, Use Black Point Compensation checked, Use Dither (8-bit/channel images). There are no items checked under advanced controls.
    I view proof setup using the same paper profile in CS3 and the print module of Lightroom (perceptual intent, black point compensation checked, simulate paper color and simulate black ink options are unchecked unless being viewed full screen) Sometimes I also use the rendering intent of relative colormetric with black point compensation checked. I am seeing evidence of more clipping almost always in Lightroom (Develop and Library Modules both) than in Photoshop CS3. I understand that the Library Module uses Adobe RGB colorspace rather than ProPhoto, but I still see more clipping in the Develop Module view of the same tiff than its clipping representation in Photoshop CS3. There is a substantial difference (not a small one) in the amount of clipping shown.
    I understand that Lightroom Develop Module is using a Perceptual intent and that the default option in Photoshop is absolute colormetric, but I still do not think this completely explains the problem, especially since I have the soft proofing set up to use perceptual intent most often. By the way, I never check the box for preserve RGB numbers.
    Can anyone explain why the difference in clipping shown and which one should be taken as more accurate: Lightroom clipping rendering or Photoshop CS3 clipping rendering?
    Please note that I ultimately export the final images as jpegs (8-bit) in srgb colorspace before posting on the web. These photos are ultimately ordered from an online printer (usually from Mpix).
    Thanks for any help you can give me. Best wishes.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your responses. In answer to Jao's questions:
    Yes, I turn on the clipping warnings in Lighroom (shortcut j). I am viewing a 16-bit tiff in ProPhoto RGB (that has made the "round trip" from Lightroom to Photoshop CS3 and back again to Lightroom) in Lightroom using the clipping warnings. The clipping shown in CS3 using the adjustment, curves, show clippings are much less than what is shown using the clipping warnings of the same 16-bit tiff in Lightroom.
    My workflow is to import Canon Raw (using sRGB, rather than Adobe RGB) into Lightroom. Make color, sharpening, tone, ect. adjustments in Lightroom, then export to Photoshop CS3 as a 16-bit tiff in ProPhoto RGB colorspace. I make additional adjustments to color, tone, skin tones, noise, touchup, sharpening, ect. and then save the file. It reappears again in Lightroom. When I have the clipping warnings on (shortcut j), this tiff appears to have considerably more clipping than on a curves layer showing clipping in Photoshop. Ultimately, I then export these same photos as jpeg (8-bit)in srgb and post to the web where they can be ordered from an online printing service such as Mpix.
    Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • After Effects CS 5.5 renders brighter gamma than my CS3.  Files gamma don't match

    I just upgraded to After Effects CS 5.5 last week.  I had a project come back that was originally done in CS3.  All the renders were done as the animation codec with an alpha channel.  When I open the CS3 project in CS5.5 and render out a composition it is brighter than all the original comps rendered out of CS3.  I have tired the checking the legacy quicktime check box in project settings but that didn't change anything.  I also have tried several color management settings.  Does anyone has any ideas of things to try.
    Thanks

    Have you considered, that this may be related to the global Gamma change Apple introduced in OSX 10.6.7? It would be relevant for Quicktime, as QT is monitor profile aware. With regards to ProRes, that's its own story of madness for which Todd has some info on his blog. Maybe look into that as well. Concerning your effects I would look into whether hardware acceleration could be at play here, i.e. turn off OpenGL in the prefs, if enabled. Several filters do use this option and in light of the eternally lasting problems with this, it#s always a good idea to give it a look...

  • CS3 much slower rendering than CS2

    Hello all,
    I'm hoping someone here might help us out. We upgraded to CS3 and have found a significant difference in rendering times between cs3 and cs2. Same computer. It's plenty of machine; dual duo core xeon 3 gigs ram.
    We were testing a .wmv file one minute in length, rendering to DVD NTSC High quality using adobe media encoder. CS2 renders in 1 minute 3 seconds. CS3 takes 13 minutes. ??? And Sony Vegas movie studio, the cheap version, takes 30 seconds. What gives? Anyone else experience this? Any help is appreciated,
    Thanks
