Repeated kernel panic/restarts on iMac
I recently got my quad i5 27" iMac back from having the hard drive replaced under the recall. I restored my files via time machine and now today my machine started restarting at random intervals. I never had issues like this before.
I installed 16gb of ram, but I've never had issues with ram before (I purchased the correct kind, etc).
Any help deciphering this would be greatly appreciated.
Here is my latest error report:

Have 2006 24 inch imac running 10.75 Lion os having repeat kernel panic attacks 2006 imac
I have a 2006 imac (24 Inch) using Lin 10.75 OS. It keeps having kernel panic attacks and needs to shut down. It is also very unstable and freezes maore and more often. Any suggestions?
Nada. And yes it displays the correct resolution of 1920 x 1200. And yeah pretty much what I'd call cosmetic too but it just bothers me after a while. Yep I'm one of those people lol my computer runs perfectly fine but I still find something wrong but it's just wrong. System Profiler is not supposed to be incorrect. But just seeing if I'm the only one with this problem or if just the 7600 GT iMacs have this error.

24" iMac repeatedly kernel panics when idle
I have recently been struck by repeated kernel panics on my 24" iMac. Until a few days ago, this happened when I woke it from sleep. Running Applejack showed up a corrupt Kensington MouseWorks pref file and removing that seems to have solved that problem. Now, however, I frequently come back to my iMac to find it kernel panicked. In other words, it panics without me doing anything. A recent example from panic.log is copied below. Is there an obvious fix? I have repaired permissions and checked memory. Thanks!

First, if your iMac has any third-party RAM, rather than the original Apple RAM, then I'd suggest that is the likely suspect. If so, that may not necessarily be shown in the results of the Apple Hardware Test. Best test of third party RAM is to remove it and replace with only the original Apple RAM, and see what the results of that are.
I don't know how or if Remy resolved his, but based on your above comment, I'd suggest you try the SMC reset, found here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
If that doesn't resolve, I'd also try a PRAM reset.
To reset the PRAM:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following four keys on the keyboard: Command (Apple logo), option, P, and R. You will need to hold these four keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Start up the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination after the startup chord sounds, but before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold all four keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chord for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
If that wouldn't help, then I suppose you'll have to proceed through the links in my above post. -
Gratuitous kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this
Ok, I know I probably shouldn't have installed Tiger on my G3 iMac so you don't need to remind me. However, it runs pretty good and I hardly ever even see the beachball spinning when I ask it to do something. What I am shocked, shocked by is the ridiculous amount of frequency that I end up with a kernel panic that gives me the 'gray screen' telling me I have to restart my Mac. I have been able to keep this down to a minimum by pointedly only running programs and commands one at a time with a good sized pause in between but even with that I am diappointed with how often it happens. Call me a heretic, but I think it would have killed Apple to stick with their classic OS framework rather than go to UNIX. I would like some tips about things I could do to minimize this occurence above what I already do. It really ***** to have had to reinstall Tiger about 3 or 4 times since I upgraded and have to change up the screen position, dock, desktop, mouse, screen saver, and reinstall all my programs after my iMac has croaked and finally accepted another reload of Tiger.
I'll ignore the major portion of your post which comes across as a rant and try to stick with the title: "kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this?"
Kernel panics are usually caused by bad or marginal RAM or RAM that isn't seated properly, or by buggy or damaged software or drivers. In the past, problems with marginal RAM for Macs has shown up when people upgraded to new versions of the OS -- which might fit your situation.
Although your CPU is slow, you have lots of RAM, so Tiger should run OK, if the RAM is not defective. You don't mention how much free space you have on your hard drive. Typically you're going to need at least 5 Gig free to give Tiger breathing room.
Running a system maintenance utility like Yasu would probably also be beneficial:
http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/
What does the hardware test for your Mac say about your system? This might help us determine if there is a hardware cause for the kernel panics. -
My wife's laptop is having repeat Kernel panics while using Safari. I don't have a recent message to display the info, but I've read this may be a memory issue. Other thoughts before I take it in to Apple?
As you mentioned a frequent cause of KP's is RAM related. These are fairly easy to troubleshoot by yourself if you want to. The causes can be:
• Faulty RAM
• RAM not seated
• Incorrect RAM
I'm assuming if you are using the original RAM that came with the computer it's not Incorrect RAM, however if you have upgraded it that's the first thing I'd look at.
You mention this occurs when she is using Safari, Safari is a very stable product however all browsers tend to be RAM hogs, the longer they are left on and the more tabs or windows open the more RAM they use. Run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and you can get a fair idea how RAM and % CPU is being used.
That is where I'd start. In addition here are some very useful articles on trouble shooting Kernel Panics:

Repeated kernel panic (seems related to ipw2200)
Since a few months I have been experiencing repeated kernel panics at seemingly random times (the system boots up fine).
Below is an example of the panic screen that shows up, it seems related to the network driver ipw2200.
What I have done so far:
- I have set my router not to use N mode (only B and G) since the adapter does not support N, this did not resolve the situation.
- I have run memtest86+ with no error messages.
- I have reinstalled the kernel, to no avail
- I have reinstalled grub, although I don't think that could be the problem, since bootup is fine.
Here is one of the panic screens that appears:

Any ideas how to resolve or further troubleshoot this?graysky wrote:Is that driver included with the kernel package? If so, how about running mainline from the AUR as a test.
I am using the standard linux kernel from the official repositories. The ipw2200 driver is included, but requires the ipw2200-fw firmware.
While creating the package for the mainline kernel, the ipw2200 driver also shows up, doesn't that mean that it is also included in that kernel?
Would it still be useful to test this kernel in that case? I'll try it anyway, I am making the package after booting from a 2011 archlinux CD,
after which I have not yet had a kernel panic occur.
Additional note: turning the wireless network adapter off completely still gives the same kernel panic at seemingly random intervals (from minutes to hours after boot)
Also the computer seems to heat up sometimes, the following message appears: temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled.
The kernel panic also appeared a few times while I was monitoring the temperature, which was at normal levels at those times.
Any more ideas? -
Intel HD3000 repeated kernel panics
I'm writing some software (an open-source microscope control system) that uses OpenGL, and I'm getting repeated kernel panics whenever I make even a minor mistake. That is, OpenGL is functional, but if I do something slightly wrong then my computer crashes. This makes debugging absurdly painful, as you can probably imagine.
The panic report log (pasted below) clearly implicates the HD3000 driver. My question is, what can I do about this? The program should crash if I do something wrong, absolutely, but it shouldn't take the computer with it. This is ruining my ability to get work done.
I suppose it's remotely possible that the card is at fault, but I was able to play a 3D game without any difficulty so I doubt that.
I'm running OSX 10.7.4 and Software Update says I'm fully up-to-date. Would it be possible to downgrade my graphics card drivers? Perhaps a previous version is more stable.

Repeated kernel panic on iMac late 2009
Dear all,
A couple of weeks ago, my iMac 27" late 2009 started repeatedly crashing with a kernel panic.
Thinking this might be hard-drive related, I brought my iMac for repair under the hard drive replacement programme. Which means I have a virtually empty hard drive with only Mountain Lion 10.8.2 installed and a couple of third-party software packages, the only one installing extensions being (AFAIK) TechTool Pro, DropBox and perhaps Chrome.
Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem.
I then tested the RAM with TechTool Pro, which didn't find any issue. I also tried and removing all RAM modules but one and progressively adding all the other modules back in, but could not figure out whether one of the modules was faulty: the Mac worked fine for at least 20 minutes after each restart, at which point I added another module. Once all the modules were added back and after an hour of use, though, kernel panics reappeared.
I then thought about a temperature problem. Indeed, I have just moved to Singapore, where temperature and humidity is quite high all year long. Below is what is reported by Temperature Monitor - from what I have read elsewhere, this does not seem outside of the ordinary:
* Ambient air: 30°C
* CPU A Heatseak: 44°C
* CPU Core 1: 47°C
* CPU Core 2: 40°C
* Display Screen Proximity: 39°C
* Graphics Processor Heatsink 1: 54°C
* Graphic Processor Temperature D: 54°C
* Main Logic Board: 56°C
* Northbridge Heat Sink: 69°C
Kernel packages are quite hard to reproduce: they can come in very close succession and then the Mac can work fine for a few hours... For instance, I've just restarted from a series of 3 kernel panics but can now safely post this message.
Any idea what this could be related to?
I've copied below the error log - maybe you can find some useful information in it:

JonathanYou don't have any extensions that can break OS X and your log indicates a graphic crash, so it looks like the graphic card is damaged. Take the Mac to an Apple Store.
If the problem started after the hard drive replacement and Apple determintes that this problem was caused during the replacement, the graphic card replacement will be free because you have a 90-day warranty after the hard drive replacement -
Kernel Panic causing my iMac to restart
iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB
Disk Space 406.5 GB free of 2 TB
All Apps are up to date
OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1 (14B25)
Any idea what is causing this problem and how to fix it? I would greatly appreciate any help.
In the past few weeks my iMac has started to periodically restart on its own. It happens multiple times a day, today it is happening just 15 minutes apart. If I happen to be viewing a video at the time, it will pause then I will hear a tick, tick, tick, tick, tick and then it restarts. The report says it is a Kernel Panic.
I researched "Kernel Panic" and what to do to diagnose the problem, and I have done the following:
I have reset my SMC
I have reset my PRAM
I ran Disk Utility and both the Disk and Permissions are fine.
I ran DriveGenius and Repair, Fix Permissions, Physical Check, and Consistency Check all said all is good.
I restarted in Safe Mode (in my account, not a guest account) and it still restarted on its own.
I first noticed this problem when running: (but now it happens even if these 2 Apps are closed)
Adobe Creative Cloud
PhotoSweeper with 100GB or more of photos.
I have been going through my 270 GB of photos to find and delete duplicates, so it has been labor intensive for my computer.
Can Creative Cloud, which I just installed in mid-December be the problem? On Adobe boards, Adobe is adamant that it cannot be an App issue, but has to be a System or Hardware issue.
When I open Photoshop I get the following message:
"3D features and some filters (Flame/Tree/Picture Frame) require a minimum of 512MB of vRAM.
Photoshop has detected less than that on your system."
My Graphics Card Setup is:
ATI Radeon HDR 4670

To me, it looks like your disk may have some corruption, or the file system (or directory) may have some corruption.
I would suggest booting to the recovery partition and running Disk Utility and seeing if it finds some things to repair. This might also be a job for DiskWarrior. As to why this would occur in the first place, I can't say for sure, it's possible there are some physical issues going on with the hard drive.
If you check the console, do the words "i/o error" appear anywhere? If so, it's 99% likely your drive is failing. -
Kernel panic on my iMac G4 flat panel OSX 10.3--help!
Hello,
I have an iMac with OSX Panther 10.3. This afternoon I decided to update a lot of the software that was on the computer (used the Software Update on the computer preferences), and also downloaded a bunch of free software that looked useful. (I don't always do the updates because I have a slow dial-up connection at home, but this weekend I brought my home computer to a friend's office with a faster connection so I could do this.) Apparently that was a BIG mistake. I left for a while, came back and discovered that not all of the Mac OSX update had been installed, and when I clicked on something (could have just been any place--I don't know), I got what I now know is a KERNAL PANIC. I repeatedly got the black drop-down screen that has a multilingual message to restart the computer.
I read some responses to questions about this on a Mac forum and another one (www.mac-help, including the Dr. Smoke list of things to do, and tried to follow some of the suggestions. I tried to reboot the computer several times, using my OSX 10.3 Install Disk (didn't work) and then my original iMac OSX Install Disk. I could get the Disk Utility to open, eventually, and two hard disk icons appeared: 38.16 GB Maxtor and 743.29 MB HL- . (The name of my hard drive had been Scribe, so this is not the same hard drive name obviously.)
I chose the hard drive called 38.16 GB Maxtor, chose First Aid, and clicked on Verify. I got this list:
Verifying disk "Macintosh HD"
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extentes Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking volume bitmap.
[in red] Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
Checking volume information.
[in red] Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 6432952 instead of 6432857)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Verify completed.
I could not Verify the hard drive icon labelled 743.29 MB HL-
I tried to install OS X but got a message that I couldn't install older software on top of the newer software (presumably OS X 10.3 that I had on the computer already?). I saw a message on a forum saying to go to Partition on the Disk Utility and to choose the smallest partition. (This is really foreign territory to me--I'm not very computer-savvy although I use mine a lot.) There was no such information and the windows were sort of greyed-out.
I tried to use the OS X 10.3 Install Disk again, but got the Kernel Panic message (same one).
Now what? Have I lost all of what I had on my computer (which was a great deal, including some registered software (Sibelius 3))? Can I retrieve it? How can I get my computer to work again?
By the way, if I go to the Apple icon and drop the menu down, all of the items are greyed-out, and I can't even see "About This Mac."
Please help, and please don't assume that I know anything beyond basic usage.
Thanks so much!
yours in a panic,
Kirinphoebe

iMac G4 with flat panel screen (hemispherical computer) Mac OS X (10.3)Well, with a PPC Mac you can upgrade as far as Firefox 3.6.19 if you upgrade from Tiger OSX 10.3.9 to Leopard OSX 10.5, but Firefox doesn't support PPC architecture in the latest Firefox 4, 5, and 6.0 versions.
For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0 & 5.0, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />
http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
But, you still need to carefully investigate if your hardware specs are sufficient for either Firefox 3.6.19 or for 10-4Fox.

HarryCould be the video card. Boot from the Apple Hardware Test on the Additional Software Disc that came with the computer. Run it several times in Extended. Write down any error you get. Might take a long time to finish, depending on how much RAM you have installed.
+Using Apple Hardware Test+
+Before using Apple Hardware Test, disconnect all external devices with the exception of keyboard, mouse, display, and speakers. You should also disconnect the Ethernet network cable. If you are using the MacBook Air, you may need to connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive. Print out these instructions before proceeding with the following steps.+
+1. Restart your computer, holding down the “D” key while the computer restarts.+
+2. When the Apple Hardware Test language chooser screen appears, select the language appropriate for your locale, and press the Return key or click on the right arrow button.+
+3. If your computer is not supported by this version of Apple Hardware Test, an error dialog will be displayed. You should Shut Down the computer, locate the correct DVD containing Apple Hardware Test for this computer, and repeat the above steps.+
+4. If your computer does not restart to Apple Hardware Test:+
+a) Restart your computer with the DVD containing Apple Hardware Test. This should be the same DVD this document resides on. Hold down the “D” key while the computer restarts.+

Mac Pro 4,1 kernel panic - restarts on its own
I have a Mac Pro 4,1 that will not finish the start up process It kernel panics at the end of the process. It will then do a restart on its own and kernel panics again.
What's the best way to figure out what's wrong with it? HDs? Processor ? Or the RAM? I have not changed anything for a long time.
ThanksPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Major Problem with kernel panic on new iMac: HELP!
My housemates 24" core 2 duo imac kernel panicked when playing Call of duty 2 (side question: if anyone has any reason why it keeps freezing and the screen getting full of horizontal lines would love to hear from you)
Now I can not start the computer. Whenever I restart, it plays the chime, but then has another kernel panic. Spoke to apple.. i reset the pram.. and then it came back.. ive zero data deleted my hardrive then re-installed osx.. and it is still doing it!! (i ran hardware tests and said everything was working fine..)
The graphics card is nvidia 7600GT
Also.. When starting up the imac, just after the apple logo white screen turns to the desktop, the screen flashes a lime green for a split second.. i know that shouldnt happen!
It wont let me send a report to apple wen i get a window saying "imac shut down unexpectantly".. when the button clicks.. no report comes up.
The operating is a 24" 2.16 Ghz iMac intel 2 core duo, 1GB RAM!
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
Cheers.I had the same problems. New iMac 24" arrived last week (a replacement because the first one had a faulty screen and keyboard). Set it up at the weekend and it seemed fine for 48 hours until I started watching a DVD on Christmas Day. About 2 minutes into the DVD I got a kernel panic, then the computer would not restart. I left it about an hour and tried again. It started successfully, but had another kernel panic when I opened the Dashboard. Again, it failed to restart. I think that something is overheating whenever the computer tries to do any 'work' and then it crashes. I too got panics when trying to boot from the installation disc. Spoke to customer support over the phone and nothing we tried worked, so I've had to send back for another replacement system.

Bizarre repeating Kernel Panic
About a year ago, my good old iMac began to exhibit a strange display error, Green (sometimes blueish, or any any color really, but primarily blue-green) gradient blocks started to pop-up everwhere. Finder windows, Menu Bars, Desktop, heck, coming out of sleep once the entire screen was taken over.
Anyway, if nothing was done about this, the system would Kernel Panic, and one would have to restart. At first i thought this to be one of the elusive mac viruses, so i bought norton antivirus, and ran the program. Well, halfway through, the machine kernel paniced. i tried booting it off of the CD, and while the system didn't kernal panic, the display error was very prevalent.
i reinstalled the OS, i reformatted the hard drive, i even took it to the Mac Genius thing, but infuriatingly, the one time i want it to kernel panic, it doesnt, so they said it's probably a logic board error. nothing got rid of the error for more than a week or two at best.
Eventually, furious, i bought a macbook. So while this isn't the most pressing thing in the world, it would really help if you could tell me what to do to fix it. Here's the panic.log file for one of the errors... i think they're mostly the same. i don't have a screen shot of the display problem, sorry!

is there anything i can do to save to computer?Hello one:
Welcome to Apple discussions:
Flat statement - there are NO documented viruses (elusive or otherwise) that affect a Mac running OS X. I strongly suggest you dump the Norton AV software. While their AV software seems to run OK, Norton stuff caused OS X users (including me) serious problems in the past. The software manufacturer has dropped support for most Mac software.
Now then, to your issue.
I do not read kernel panics well. However, if you have reinstalled OS X, you have eliminated almost all software-related causes of kernel panics. That, of course, leaves hardware. I do not read crash logs well, unfortunately. I would, however, run the hardware checker that came with your Mac to see if it points to any problems. You can also check on the HD (unlikely cause, based on your post) by opening disk utility and highlighting the hD (not your files). At the bottom is something called S.M.A.R.T. If that says anything other than verified, you have a HD problem.
