Repeated loss of landline service for 78 year old ...

My 78 year old mother lives alone and has some fairly major health issues.  For the third time in three weeks, she has lost the use of her landline and would be unable to call for an ambulance if one was needed.  BT say this is due to the theft of copper from cables and seem to be saying that they will repair as soon as they can but, despite being a priority customer, this has taken up to four days to be resolved.  We contact BT who say the problem is in my mother's house and that she will be charged £127 if this is proven and we go through this each time, only to be eventually told that it is another cable issue.  This time, rather than hanging on the phone for half an hour, my sister reported it online but it doesn't show a live fault and a different screen just says BT are aware of the issue!  What is happening her?

Hi kaz223,
This doesn't sound good, if you can email in her account details and your forum username I'll check the fault out on my end to see what's going on with it.
You can find our contact email address by clicking my username.
Many thanks,

  • Version 4 listed in documentation for year old software installed.

I'm installing software on my server. The specs list this for browsers:
    ''New Web Browser Support:
Firefox 4 is supported for students and Internet Explorer 9 is now supported for both administrators and students.''
Is this the actual version 4, and Firefox has moved so quickly to 13, or am I missing something?

    22.3.2011-4 version, 21.6.11-5, 31.8.11-6, 27.9.11-7, 18.11.11-8, 20.12.11-9, 31.1.12-10, 13.3.12-11, 24.4.12-12, 5.6.12-13, 28.6.12-13.0.1 the latest, almost in every 6 weeks.

  • I recently upgraded my internet service with Comcast for faster internet.  When I user ethernet connection I get 50 MB download speed....when I use the wireless connection I get 10-20 MB speed.  I have an airport extreme...3-4 years old.  Why?

I recently upgraded my internet service with Comcast for faster internet.  When I use an ethernet connection I get 50 MB download speed....when I use the wireless connection I get 10-20 MB speed.  I have an airport extreme...3-4 years old.  Why is the speed so different and are there settings I can change to increase the wireless speed?

If your supposed to be getting 20 Mb/s down via your ISP and both Mac's are not getting that on the SpeedTest, then obviously your router appears to be the cause.
Connect one Mac directly to the ISP's modem, power off/wait 30 seconds/then power on, then power on the Mac. The ISP will connect directly to the Mac, then run a SpeedTest.
Then repeat the same for the other Mac. If both Mac's have a problem then it's possibly the ISP, the modem, your lines to them or on your property, or both Mac's are messed up.
You'll have to keep searching for the cause. Call your ISP and ask then to run a test to see if your getting your 20 Mb/s to your modem, that should clear part of the problem.

Things You Can Do To Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.

    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Do I give my 7 year old his own apple id for a new ipad mini or use mine

I just bought an ipad mini for my 7 year old. we have other ipad, computers, iphones etc under my apple Id. I don't want my son to access some of my information, however many of the games and apps I've purchased are for him on my devices so I wouldn't have to re purchase them if I use my id.
I guess I'm wondering how do I set his mini up and make it kid friendly? Is there an option to create a kids apple Id as it asks for what year you are born and he is too young

Its really up to you how you manage your kids content.  Think about what you want him to access. Do you want  him to access Messages? iCloud? Facetime? or only the iTunes and App Stores?
You can use your Apple ID for just the stores so he can access the purchased Apps for free but avoid setting up an Id for the other services if you don't want to.   In the end its up to you whether you want to create an ID for him at this point.  You certainly don't need to.
You can also use restrictions to setup some parental controls.
    iOS: Understanding Restrictions (parental controls)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4213
As to the age restrictions to create an apple id, you need to enter a valid date above 13 years of age to create one, but no one is stopping you from lying about his age. As long as you are sure about what you are doing and are prepared to handle the Apple Id access it should not matter what age you enter.

  • I need to able to search for calendar entries that are over one year old.

I am an old Palm OS user and have used the calendar on it to track my clients visits/service for the last 15 years.  By searching the customers name on the palm, it would bring up every entry I had keyed in for them, so I could immediately know how old their equipment was, what service had been done, etc.  I also used the calendar to track my daily and weekly sales.  I was disappointed to find that the ipad does not search for any entries older than one year.  Is there something that can fix this or is there an app that could be used in the way the palm was?  Thanks

Well, that would depend on what calendar you are using.
If you are simply relying on the calendar on the device, well, that's not very smart.  Restoring from backup should put everything back.
If the calendar is synced with another service, like Google, iCloud, Exchange, do the entires still exist there?
If the calendar is synced with Outlook or iCal on your computer, do the entries still exist there?

  • Complaint for my 95 years old grandparents. Verizon so inconsiderate!!!

First off, Verizon does make it impossible for consumer to file a complaint. And am very disappointed with the service provided and the service of the agent. I'm the granddaughter of the account holder. Both of my grandparents are in their mid 90s, so the home phone service is their only way to connect with other people. However, since the new fios were installed in July 2013, there were many unreasonable outages. Often times it last a day or two weekly or biweekly. It is unacceptable for consumers their age to handle any kind of uncertainty with phone services. They both have home attendants that needed the phone line to clock in and out for work, since this was how most of home aid servicing agency proves that their employees were at work. Doctors, nurses, social workers and family members all count on the phone line service to reach my grandparents because everyday we need to check if they're still living. But the service that Was provided was unacceptable. I have called Verizon many times to get the issue fix, however on the day the technician came, the service had no problem so nothing was done, but days later there would be both outage on phone and internet services. I just called again before and another technician was scheduled to come, but no guarantee can be make to me. Home phone lines should be the most reliable service that the elderly can count on but it was always failing us. Technical issues shouldn't be the consumer's problem because Verizon was the one that should provide us with fully functioning equipments. It was a simple contract that the consumer pays, Verizon provides the service, but Then why are we always paying but the service was out when we most needed, since my grandfather just got hospitalized, countless calls was made from social workers and other government agency.
So I tried to complaint to one of your agent supervisor named {edited for privacy}. I don't even know if the information she gave me is accurate but her customer service was terrible. The overall satisfaction score would be zero or lower if I can give it lower. She wasn't sensitive to my situation where my grandfather is in the hospital already and she refused to provide me with any solution and guarantees. In her words, I cannot file a complaint through her and an official complaint can be only file online, but the service provider, Verizon, failed to provide me with internet service. So in her saying, it means that I have to have another phone from another service and an alternative internet service as well to 1. To able to reach an useless agent and 2. To file an complaint online. So if I have both standby phone and internet hen why should I be paying and using Verizon that constantly doesn't work? So if my grandparents or any other elderly are living alone, how can they reach help when the phone line service is not working? What if this is their only way of dialing 911? Also a 95 year old grandpa should learn to how to use a computer to file a "proper complaint"? So I wonder what does the agent  is hire to do when all she said was "a technician is scheduled for you." Also she said that she is not there so she doesn't know what the problem is, well, you are an agent and moreover a supervisor, can't you be more responsible to the words you say? And what can my grandparents do when the technician is here on a day which service are fine and nothing was done like last time? So do we as families, cross our fingers and hope they don't need emergency help on the days that there are no phone services? Beyond disappointed with Verizon and all of its agents and technicians.

Hello Albert, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

I have been using iTunes for years to connect to the radio and just recently tried to tune in and an error sign pops up stating " A error occurred while contracting the radio tunning service. Check your internet connection or try again later." There's no problrm with my internet service so what's up?

You are probably using an old version of iTunes with which the stream link service seems to have stopped working for many users of older iTunes.  No, Apple makes no comment about this kind of thing.  It may reappear, it may not (it has been dead for over a week now).  Your solution is to upgrade the operating system version on your computer from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 so you can run a newer iTunes, or live without.  You can still open streams if you can get the URL, and you can then save them as playlist items.

  • Small MacBook Pro screen scratch: Are they normal for a 2+ year old computer?

    Hello,
I am writing about a topic that may have been mentioned around on these forums multiple times, scratches on the MacBook Pro screen display. In August 2010, I bought my 2010 MacBook Pro and since then I have been very careful with the screen by avoiding to touch it and clean it around every two to three months. However, today, I was cleaning my MacBook Pro screen and a way I examine the screen cleaness is by placing my iPhone 4S LED flash light illuminating the screen which shows the smudges and dirt that the screen has. Unfortunately, today I found 2 scratches on my MacBook Pro screen which run horizontally, these scratches are very small at around 1mm in lenght. They are not noticeable when the screen is on, which is why the scratch may have gone undetectable up until today when I used my iPhone's LED.
Off course I am a little dismayed because through all my carefullness when I clean the screen (I use a gentle up and down motion to clean the screen), still I was not able to prevent a screen scratch. When I close my MacBook Pro, I still use the plastic material that came on top of the keyboard to avoid any contact of the screen and the keys; I always shake that plastic material before placing it on top of the keyboard . So here's my question is it normal for a almost 2.5 year old computer to have two small scratches as the one I am speaking about.
I did find the screen bezel at Amazon and I may buy one as a spare and store it in a secure place and use it if there are more pronounced screen scratches.
Thanks in advance for any answers and suggestions to my predicament.

    Thomas A Reed wrote:
I have a 2010 MacBook Pro. I do not take any care to put anything in between the keyboard and screen... I just use it as it was made to be used. I don't take any particular care when cleaning the screen... often, it's just rubbing off a fingerprint with my sleeve or the tail of my shirt. No scratches whatsoever.
How your screen got scratched is not something anyone here can answer. We can speculate, at most, but that's not likely to be very useful. I'd recommend not putting anything between the screen and keyboard when closing the machine. That could very well be the cause of the problem, if something got stuck to that material when you closed it between keyboard and screen.
Thanks for the suggestion... I will apply these changes to my MacBook Pro's storing procedure and remove the plastic out of the equation. What bugs me is the fact that because the scratch is 1mm long and horizontal it tells me that a force dragged the material. The only thing I can recollect is when one time a family member accidentally passed close to my MacBook Pro with his headphone jack disconnected and hanging, unfortunately the metal part scraped over the screen but there were not scratches to detect. The impact area as I recollect is close to the scratch but the force of the impact and travel distance was not something as forceful to create such damage. Maybe the plastic is the culprit which makes me feel disappointed because I was using it to avoid problems rather than creating one. Anyways, I think I'll buy a spare bezel for my MacBook and in case there are more future and pronounced scratches, I will send it to repairs to an Apple Authorized Service Provider and give them the bezel.
