Replaced hard drive, installed original 10.5.8. Computer won't update to 10.6.3 from disks even though I was running 10.8.? before hard drive replacement?

I've had this MacBook Pro since 2009. Over a year ago I started having issues, yada yada, long story short I finally got around to replacing my hard drive today and now it works just fine, except... Before I replaced the hard drive, I was running 10.8.something. When I got it in 2009 it was running 10.5.8, so obviously that's what had to be installed on the new hard drive. I have the 10.6.3 disks from my sister's computer, which is what I had originally used to upgrade OS X before I used the app store to get to 10.8, but now when I put the disk in, it tells me 10.6.3 can't be installed on this computer. I have an Intel processor, I have an entire hard drive of space, and I definitely have more than 1GB of RAM. The hard drive is brand new and compatible with everything. Why won't OS X upgrade?

Excellent! So it's the disks, not the computer. That's a huge relief. My sister's laptop is indeed a MacBook circa 2010, not a Pro, which would explain why it wouldn't work. Turns out I did have other disks at some point in time for that upgrade, so I'll either need to find those or order new ones. Geek Squad tried to use the 10.6 disks initially but got the same message I got, which is that the computer could not be upgraded with those disks. But you actually answered my question, thank you so much. I'm so relieved it's not because of the computer.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

I have an older Kodak which they have stopped supporting and I have to take out the SD card and put it in the card slot to download pictures.  I read other threads where this solved similar problems for others.  Some have a separate card reader but I just use the one on my imac.  Wish it was more convienent to get to it though.

  • Charged for failed self install even though it was outside cable issue

Recently I moved and opted for self-install. I did all the set up correctly on my end but was still not getting internet service. I called and a technician was sent out and the technician also couldn't set it up because he determined the issue was with the outside line. He told me another technician would need to come out, at no charge to me, to run a new wire into the apartment for me to get service. The second technician came out a week later and did the work and again, no mention of charges for services was given or indicated on the receipt I was left with and signed. Sure enough I check my bill this month and there is a failed self-install fee of $100! I talked to customer service in chat and they said the best they could do is $30 even though I was told I would NOT be charged for the 2nd technician. I was also told that $50 service charges are mandatory whenever someone comes out, even though this specific charge is for a bogus failed self-install and not for a generic service visit. It wouldn't be so much of an issue if the first technician had just said "by the way it will cost $100 for the 2nd technician to install the new wiring from the cable box" instead of telling me it would be free. Why can't the technicians and service reps just be up front from the begining? This has been very frustrating. I still don't see the $30 credit and I should be getting a FULL credit because charge is completely bogus and the technicians should be trained to explain in advance all fees for services
    BEFORE I authorize service.

  • My eMac won't update to 10.5.8 from 10.3.5 after I wiped the hard drive clean

I was wiping the hard drive of my eMac that at the time HAD a good running copy of OS X 10.5.8 on it. Now obviously I did not want to reinstall from a back up because I'm donating the eMac to a non-profit and wanted no data from me, the previous owner, on it..
I do have the original discs, but they only install OS X 10.3.5 on the eMac. When I tried to update the OS to 10.5.8, where I had it running before wiping, I got a message that the "Bill of materials was not included for this package" (or something to that effect), so the eMac would not allow me to update the OS with the newly downloaded software.
    Now what?

Thank you both so very much! I have found my Leopard DVD and am installing it as I write this on a different computer. The missing link, no doubt. I presume that after I install the 10.5 Leopard, I can then add the update that sits on my desktop now?
    Again, thank you so much.

  • I need a data transfer from intact hard drive of older macbook that won't boot. Can Apple provide this service even though my one to one membership has expired?

I need a data transfer from a 2005 Macbook to my new one (2010). I damaged the old laptop and although it wouldn't turn on, when I brought it to the Apple Store they ascertained that the hard drive was still intact. They said I needed to purchase a one to one membership to get a data transfer, which I did, but somehow forgot about it and now it's expired. Is there any way I can still get the data from the old hard drive transferred to my new macbook? Can Apple provide this service even though my one to one membership has expired?

Go to OWC where you can purchase a suitable enclosure for the drive. You will need an enclosure for a SATA notebook drive. This is assuming the old computer is a MacBook and not an iBook. I make this observation because the first MacBook was released in 2006, not in 2005. If yours is a 2005 model then it's an iBook and uses an ATA interface.
Install the old drive in the enclosure, connect to your new computer. You can then transfer your data.

  • If I switch my installed PS6, Illustrator and InDesign over to the Cloud, will I have to pay monthly even though I already purchased the programs? And will I then be able to use the program on another computer when I sign into my adobe account?

If I switch my installed PS6, Illustrator and InDesign over to the Cloud (from an installed program with the code, like Adobe used to do it), will I have to pay monthly even though I already purchased the programs? And will I then be able to use the program on another computer when I sign into my adobe account? I know how to switch it over, I just want to make sure I won't also have to pay monthly even though it's already been purchased.

Your purchase of licensed version of Adobe applications does apply to CC subscriptions.  If you subscribe you will pay for the subscription on whatever periodic basis you choose (monthly versus annually).

  • Freeze when installing 10.4.4 - now computer won't fully startup

    Hi,
Somehow at the end of the install of 10.4.4 either my pb froze, or the software crashed. I force restarted and the farthest I can get is to the desktop bg image showing up - then that's it.
I have repaired disk (said it was ok), and permissions from external FW HD, but nothing seems to help. Booting up "safe" doesn't help. I have Diskwarrior and am going to try that, but I don't think that is the problem.
I also downloaded the standalone update and was going to try installing again from the FW HD but even though the image mounts i can't see it to run it. (Don't know if that would have been possible anyway).
    Any ideas? Thanks!
    Any ideas?

I went ahead and did an archive/install of the system folder from my Tiger CD.
Then I did the combo update and so far things are working. When I do Repair Permissions now though, about a 1000 things get "Special Permissions"??

  • Installed Safari 3.1, reboot, computer won't boot fans go into overdrive

Okay, I installed the Safari 3.1 update and restarted my computer. However it won't boot now. The displays stay black and after about 30 seconds the fans in the G5 kick on full blast.
I've tried shutting it manually and unplugging the power cord from the back. I also tried zapping the PRAM.
    Help? I would appreciate it.

My computer is also now not restarting. First Safari 3.1 had other apps stop working and now the computer won't restart. I tried Safe Boot and zapping the PRAM but it just cycles through two different blue screens.

  • Hard drive crashed. can i reinstall the snow leopard disc from before even though it was a single user?

My hard drive crashed on my macbook about a year ago. I bought a brand new hard drive and brand new full install snow leopard discs single user to install on my empty hard drive. about a year later the hard drive crashed again, but it was still under warranty so i sent it out to get a new one. now when i try to install the same snow leopard disc, it says it can not be installed on this computer. I feel like I've been ripped off now, because i have no operating system on my computer and i already spent $129 on the snow leopard disc a year ago. Is there anything i can do to install this? I also have an iMac, I heard you can take the operating system from that or something? I just need my macbook back.

Is there anything i can do to install this?
Yes. Boot from the installation disc, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, select the internal drive, and partition it with the default options. Then run the Installer.

  • I'm trying to install Windows XP on my Leopard 10.5.8 using Boot Camp Assistant but when it restarts it says I should insert a bootable disk even though I didn't remove the installer from the drive. What should I do?

More info: I'm using an external CD drive because the built-in one doesn't work for some reason.
Also I went back and deleted the partition (also using Boot Camp Assistant) and just gave up on installing XP, but now every time I turn on my macbook I have to press the Option key to mount the Mac HD. If I don't, it returns to the black screen that says I have to insert the bootable disk and press any key. How do I stop this problem? I've already verified the disk and permissions, plus repaired it. It's still the same.

Go into your system preferences and click the startup disk icon then select your Mac HD.

  • Macbook pro won't boot to OSX, bootcamp windows works fine. Also won't boot from disk, even with a new (blank) hard drive inserted. Any ideas (I've already tried everything I could find on the forums with no success)?

    Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone has found a solution to this kind of problem.  I've found lots of similar posts, but none that have any solutions that will work.
    Cheers

Did some research, what I did was acidentally convert my disks to dynamic, and dynamic doesnt allow you to boot from them, so if I were to plug this macbook's HDD into another computer and them use that computers disk manager to convert them back to basic, would they then be usable again, or have I caused damage that requires a reinstall.
    Thanks

  • TS5376 Does uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes affect the number of authorized computers listed for my account? When I reinstall, is iTunes considering my computer a new authorized device even though it was installed before??

    Hello,
When trying to install the recent iTunes update, I got the Error Message "Program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer."  Apple's recommended solution involves the step of uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes on my laptop.  I'm concerned that when I reinstall, iTunes will think it's a new device and use up one of the 5 device authorizations the iTunes accounts allow.  Do I need to do anything in particular to prevent that?  If yes, what should I do?
    Thank you.
    Katya

Actually, I'd use the following user tip rather than the Apple document as a guide. (At the time I'm writing this reply, the user tip is much better organised, more accurate and way more up to date that the Apple document.)
Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates
In the normal course of events, and uninstall/reinstall doesn't affect your number of authorisations on a computer. Usually, it requires a serious hardware change (like a new hard drive or motherboard), or a BIOS update, or an upgrade to a different Windows operating system to confuse your iTunes and make it think that it is now installed on a different computer before you end up using extra authorisations for the same operating system for the same computer. (So if you ever have to do things like major hardware changes, or BIOS updates on the computer, deauthorise the PC first, and then reauthorise after the change has been carried out.)

  • When I try to install 3.6.18 I get a message that the installation failed because an other copy of Firefox was running. But this is not the case. How may I install the downloaded new version?

I have tried to install this new version several times, but each time I got the same message. I have no other program running on the PC when I perform this installation. My present version is 3.6.16.
    Best regards

That file might have moved to a different location on the server. I think you'll need to check with RefWorks support or your local IT department on why the install page links do not work.
